was said in regard to <lb/>
the Jury and summoning <lb/>
another, or that they should <lb/>
not be paid. However, the <lb/>
Judge ordered that no tickets be <lb/>
allowed the State's witnesses, <lb/>
not on account of any variance <lb/>
as to the testimony before the <lb/>
Court from that before the <lb/>
Grand Jury, but because of the <lb/>
unwillingness of the witnesses <lb/>
to testify and their demeanor <lb/>
on the stand. Judge Connor <lb/>
made this order concerning the <lb/>
witnesses before the Jury had <lb/>
brought in their verdict- <lb/>
Numbers Democratic journals <lb/>
are themselves notoriously <lb/>
conspicuous in lauding the virtues <lb/>
and sounding the praises of the <lb/>
appointees to office under the pres- <lb/>
administration. It we could re <lb/>

State are under democratic control, <lb/>

to ask. off, gentlemen, and <lb/>

for the common good, but in our <lb/>
opinion those who make the <lb/>
most sacrifice of time, talents <lb/>
and means to advance the in- <lb/>
of Greenville will be the <lb/>
ones to receive its richest reward. <lb/>
If not in the conscious <lb/>
knowledge of having done all <lb/>
within his power possible to <lb/>
make those who are less <lb/>
and their families happy <lb/>
and for the humblest <lb/>
citizen always takes a great pride <lb/>
in the town he lives in and ac- <lb/>
cording to our idea of the relation <lb/>
of citizenship, every citizen <lb/>
interested in each other and <lb/>
that it is not only his Christian <lb/>
duty to look out for employment <lb/>
for himself, but he is directly in- <lb/>
financially in having <lb/>
citizen self-sustaining and <lb/>
their families happy. <lb/>
Representatives. The Senate <lb/>
been already sounded on this <lb/>
and it is in favor of it, as <lb/>
might be expected. <lb/>
The employees of the <lb/>
Department have presented <lb/>
Secretary with a <lb/>
ant oak hall clock, eight feet <lb/>
high, as a token of the esteem in <lb/>
which he is held them. <lb/>
Harrison and Blame are, in the <lb/>
language of the street urchin, <lb/>

of these young men have ever <lb/>

little objection to giving them <lb/>
positions, there is a very de <lb/>
objection to seeing them <lb/>
en positions out of all proportions <lb/>
to any ability ever displayed by <lb/>
them. <lb/>

a true bill against Nelson Hopkins, <lb/>

evening he was seen in <lb/>
town, and the Sheriff arrested him <lb/>
and put him in jail. One of <lb/>
prisoners in the jail says Nelson <lb/>
stole fifty cents from him while he <lb/>
was asleep Saturday night. The <lb/>

found their bill was stealing <lb/>
