Do not overlook our Raleigh <lb/>
letter this week. But of course <lb/>
no one will do so as they are in- <lb/>
in the degree <lb/>
It is not the at each ex <lb/>
before Supreme <lb/>
Court of the of applicant- <lb/>
for license to practice law that <lb/>
every one of them secures <lb/>
without a single failure. <lb/>
It so happened last Friday <lb/>
there were nineteen applicant <lb/>
to be examined The list is pub- <lb/>
elsewhere. <lb/>
We see from the Raleigh l a <lb/>
that our Representative, <lb/>
Mr. King, has introduced a bill <lb/>
to make the January and June <lb/>
terms of Pitt Superior Conn <lb/>
for the trial of both criminal <lb/>
civil cases, and also another bill <lb/>
amending the charter of the <lb/>
town Greenville. We sup <lb/>
pose this latter bill is to <lb/>
our municipal government Dem- <lb/>
after the first Monday <lb/>
in May next. Good. <lb/>
Senator Williams writes us to <lb/>
request he people in the several <lb/>
townships to get together and <lb/>
express who they desire to be <lb/>
appointed to till the <lb/>
for Justices of the Peace and <lb/>
send the same to their <lb/>
This matter should <lb/>
be attended to at once. Let the <lb/>
people come together, and make <lb/>
their selections and forward the <lb/>
names promptly that our <lb/>
may not be delayed <lb/>
in work. And above all <lb/>
things make good selections, <lb/>
men who have wisdom and good <lb/>
judgment This is essential. <lb/>
The news of Senator Zeb <lb/>
having lost one of his <lb/>
eyes was received with much <lb/>
sadness by the people generally, <lb/>
especially those of his <lb/>
State to whom he is so dear. <lb/>
Every member of the <lb/>
Assembly from Pitt county is at <lb/>
work earnestly, which proves <lb/>
t hat our people made good <lb/>
Senator Williams and <lb/>
Representatives Cherry and <lb/>
King have each introduced a <lb/>
number of bids that are much <lb/>
importance. The last we no <lb/>
from Mr. Cherry is to <lb/>
Pitt county to <lb/>
tax collectors. The bill was not <lb/>
published in full, but if what <lb/>
we think it appoint and <lb/>
make a bonded collector in every <lb/>
should be passed. <lb/>
It would not only prove of <lb/>
fit to Pitt county but also to <lb/>
every county in the State if it <lb/>
becomes a general law. Town <lb/>
ship tax collectors could says <lb/>
thousands of dollars every year <lb/>
are not collected under the <lb/>
present of one collector to <lb/>
county. <lb/>
For a week or two we have <lb/>
been intending to speak of the <lb/>
handsome appearance of the <lb/>
Charlotte Chronicle of late. Since <lb/>
a few copies of the new sheet <lb/>
have been received we have seen <lb/>
item in another exchange <lb/>
looks like is some- <lb/>
thing wrong about the Chronicle <lb/>
r the people of Charlotte, one <lb/>
or the other, we are not <lb/>
ed to say which. That item <lb/>
The people of Charlotte have <lb/>
lone a tiling by the <lb/>
In addition to <lb/>
liberally towards its up- <lb/>
otherwise the merchants have <lb/>
allow the price of ad ear <lb/>
lo be raised per cent. <lb/>
quite creditable to the <lb/>
Charlotte. <lb/>
The Chronicle is truly a hand- <lb/>
some sheet, typographically and <lb/>
otherwise. It has the most city <lb/>
appearance in its get up <lb/>
and print paper in <lb/>
Carolina and is truly a credit <lb/>
mi its owners. But the part that <lb/>
people of Charlotte are tail- <lb/>
is where the surprise comes <lb/>
in. We have examined every <lb/>
issue of the Chronicle received in <lb/>
i be last few weeks and have yet <lb/>
t find a copy that contains as <lb/>
much as one column of advertise- <lb/>
from the business men of <lb/>
Charlotte. This may look like <lb/>
the people of Charlotte were <lb/>
doing a handsome thing by so <lb/>
and deserving a paper as <lb/>
Chronicle but we fail to see <lb/>
It is a common saying that <lb/>
the business men of a town or <lb/>
city are the columns <lb/>
of the local press. In this re- <lb/>
the Chronicle cannot <lb/>
much for Charlotte and there <lb/>
are other places in the State that <lb/>
don't show up much better. <lb/>

Two products of tho barbarous <lb/>
of their savage law are the <lb/>

and the other are to be <lb/>
found nil through the country. The <lb/>
murder cairn is but a heap of <lb/>
over the spot where a murder was <lb/>
committed, lo which every passer by <lb/>
adds one. The sanctuary is u refuge, <lb/>
in which the criminal who reaches it <lb/>

All this cruelty, as practiced accord- <lb/>

in the Moors an indifference to <lb/>
life more callous than that evinced by <lb/>
most Orientals. The following story, <lb/>
related by an who was <lb/>
an eye witness of the events, is a <lb/>
illustration of this fatalism and <lb/>
of the absolute reverence in which the <lb/>
sultan's decree is held. <lb/>
An Englishman, resident in Tangier, <lb/>
seeking one morning to leave the town <lb/>
by one of the gates, found the gate <lb/>
closed and a largo crowd assembled <lb/>
before it. He also saw a number of <lb/>
soldiers. Mid in their midst a couple of <lb/>

A heated discussion arose between <lb/>
this wretch and the officer in charge as <lb/>
to tho blood money he was to receive <lb/>
for the job. The two victims stood by <lb/>
and listened. The butcher demanded <lb/>
francs a head. The officer finally <lb/>
agreed, though with ill grace. Then tho <lb/>

The Englishman turned away his <lb/>
