Once more the Republicans have <lb />
been doomed to disappointment, <lb />
while waiting for the Democrats to <lb />
help them out of a hole. The lie- <lb />
publican Senators fully deter- <lb />
mined not to report a tariff bill at <lb />
this session, bot they still pretend <lb />
to be working on that tariff bill, and <lb />
they have been indulging in the <lb />
hope that the House would pass <lb />
joint resolution setting an early day <lb />

eagerly accept, and then go on the <lb />
stump and say that the Democrats j <lb />

thus prevented their reporting a tar- <lb />

was wise, and decided to wait for <lb />
the Senate to get ready to adjourn. <lb />
Now, the Republicans of the Sens <lb />

When objection is made by a <lb />
Democratic prohibitionist to <lb />
vote anything except his party <lb />
ticket, these shrewd Third party <lb />
men will tell them that they are <lb />
voting for Democrats when they <lb />
vote their ticket. The scheme <lb />
is a nice one, and is carefully <lb />
laid to catch the unwary, but we <lb />
believe there are no Democrats <lb />
in Pitt county who will bite at <lb />
the tempting bait. Our people <lb />
have eye <lb />
they know that the pill has only <lb />
a slight coating of sugar on the <lb />
outside while within it is the <lb />
same old rotten Republican dose. <lb />
And we have been sufficiently <lb />
cursed with that medicine here- <lb />
So much of it has been <lb />
given us that our people have <lb />
become nauseated and have spit <lb />
it out of their mouths to be <lb />
taken no mote forever. <lb />

the Republican wants to be put <lb />

-That is just about tin- <lb />
size of it. Such a desire can be <lb />
put down as the incentive that <lb />
leads the Republican bosses to <lb />
advocate a change. <lb />
We understand the Pro- <lb />
have finished their <lb />
county ticket, or so much of if <lb />
as they propose to run. As re- <lb />
to us the ticket now <lb />
stands as follows For the Sen- <lb />
ate, Gideon Allen; for the <lb />
House f Representatives. E. S. <lb />
Parker and J. R. Rollins; for <lb />
of Deeds, H. W. A. <lb />
for Coroner, Rev. T. N. <lb />
Manning. Mr. J. B. Cherry, the <lb />
Democratic nominee for Treas- <lb />
is endorsed by them. As <lb />
yet no nomination has been made <lb />
for Sheriff or Surveyor that we <lb />
have heard of For the former <lb />
office Mr. B. J. Wilson is said to <lb />
be the man. All the <lb />
have heretofore been Democrats. <lb />
We want every white man in <lb />
the county, and every reader of <lb />
the Reflector to read carefully <lb />
the on first page headed <lb />
it over, two or three times, study <lb />
it well, and decide whether or <lb />
not you will be drawn off from <lb />
th. Man's by <lb />
any side issues and permit a re- <lb />
turn of the party into power <lb />
which has already heaped such <lb />
disgrace upon our fair land. <lb />
ember, too, that the cry of the <lb />
and their <lb />
allies is with the <lb />
White Man's and that <lb />
your only escape from such <lb />
as is therein depicted is <lb />
to stand shoulder to shoulder in <lb />
defense of your wives, your <lb />
children, your homes, your <lb />
rights, your liberties. <lb />
Mr. B F. Bryan, chairman of <lb />
the Prohibition Executive Com- <lb />
of the county has said <lb />
that all the nominees of that <lb />
party for the various offices in <lb />
this county were taken from the <lb />
Democratic ranks in order to <lb />
the people that the <lb />

That excellent and <lb />
able paper, the Wilmington <lb />
completed its twenty-first year <lb />
last week. Of all the papers <lb />
that have been published in the <lb />
State since we have been <lb />
with them, the Star <lb />
takes the lead, and it now <lb />
stands without an equal in <lb />
North Carolina journalism. <lb />
Fearless, outspoken, a tireless <lb />
laborer for the good of the <lb />
whole people, it is a Star that <lb />
can be relied upon to lead its <lb />
readers aright. We tender our <lb />
heartiest congratulations to our <lb />
contemporary upon its <lb />
having the oldest as well as the <lb />
best of North Carolina dailies. <lb />
May its longest years of life be <lb />
ye t in the future, and as it in- <lb />
creases in age may its usefulness <lb />
influence strengthen and <lb />
grow larger and broader. We <lb />
do not see how the people of <lb />
North Carolina and the Demo- <lb />
party could do without <lb />
the Star, for in it both have a <lb />
strong friend and a zealous ad- <lb />
Together with its other <lb />
numerous admirers the <lb />
tor is indeed proud to note its <lb />
prosperity. <lb />
Had there ever been a doubt <lb />
in the mind of the Reflector no <lb />
to the hostility of the <lb />
to the Democratic party <lb />
the selection of the Chairman <lb />
of their Executive <lb />
Pitt county would have shown <lb />
us our mistake. B. F. Bryan, <lb />
the man the Prohibition- <lb />
have selected for this <lb />
and who is, by virtue <lb />
his office, manager and boss of <lb />
the party, has ever heretofore <lb />
been one of the most bitter and <lb />
partisan Republicans in Eastern <lb />
North Carolina. To his eyes <lb />
nothing was meaner than a Dem- <lb />
and were to be <lb />
left undone, no scheme left <lb />
tried, that would help to weaken <lb />
them. A Radical of the <lb />
iris he has always been, his whole <lb />
life work devoted to their <lb />
service. And it is only very re- <lb />
that this head of the Pro- <lb />
party has been convert- <lb />
ed to their faith, he, until a few <lb />
weeks ago, being an out and out <lb />
Republican. The change came <lb />
on gradually. First he was go- <lb />
to vote the Republican Na- <lb />
ticket and the balance <lb />
Prohibition, but now he has <lb />
hopped clean over into the arms <lb />
of the Third Party, although he <lb />
says it was the hardest thing he <lb />
ever tried to do in his life. <lb />
White men who do not wish to <lb />
see a return of the days of 1868, <lb />
and all its attendant horrors and <lb />
disgrace, will be wary and give <lb />
Mr. Bryan's party a wide berth. <lb />

ELEGY IN A <lb />
MEETING. <lb />
The that tells the hour of meeting <lb />
sounds, <lb />
And to the ball my comrades reel their <lb />
reckless way; <lb />
Tobacco juice and profanity likewise <lb />
As the crowd I press as best I <lb />
may. <lb />
But soon all enthusiasm and <lb />
A silence seems a sad of de- <lb />
feat. <lb />
Beneath these benches in the sawdust <lb />
laid. <lb />
Where heaves a snore from many a rag- <lb />
heap; <lb />
Fit emblems of the part by whisked play- <lb />
ed. <lb />
The ruling of the Grand Old Party <lb />
sleep. <lb />
Their present happiness and destiny ob- <lb />
Nor grandeur hear with a disdainful <lb />
smile, <lb />
Their history, though mayhap it be <lb />
pure. <lb />
Perhaps in this neglected spot it laid <lb />
Some mind that might the <lb />
have stilled; <lb />
Hands that the Treasury surplus might <lb />
have stayed, <lb />
And by the operation all our pockets <lb />
filled. <lb />
Some mute inglorious Stanton here may <lb />
rest, <lb />
Some Carnegie without Scotch acres <lb />
broad; <lb />
Some Ingersoll, not yet ad- <lb />
Some guiltless of the Star Route <lb />
fraud. <lb />
The applause of monopolies to <lb />
command, <lb />
The calls for honest government to de- <lb />
To scatter boodle over a mighty land, <lb />
And read their history In its <lb />
Their lot forbade, nor circumscribed, <lb />
alone <lb />
Their greed of fame, but their crimes <lb />
confined. <lb />
to claim that which they ne'er <lb />
could own <lb />
The trust, esteem or honor of mankind. <lb />
They kept their place amid the humbler <lb />
scenes of life, <lb />
In labor's ranks their sober hours were <lb />
spent; <lb />
But heeding every call to strife; <lb />
ever was lent. <lb />
And now to dumb a prey, <lb />
drunken sleep, unhonored and unwept; <lb />
We'll let them pass their heedless hours <lb />
away, <lb />
As though time, for them, no record ever <lb />
kept. <lb />
For thee, who mindful of the unhonored <lb />
drunk, <lb />
Dost these lines their artless tab re- <lb />
late; <lb />
Should you ere chance to such depths be <lb />
sunk, <lb />
And some kindred spirit should inquire <lb />
thy fate. <lb />
some hoary headed rod might <lb />
say, <lb />
Oft, have I seen him at the midnight <lb />
hour. <lb />
O'er a secret meeting holding fullest <lb />
sway, <lb />
And guiding its workings with magnetic <lb />
power. <lb />
Again, I've sat on some grand gala day, <lb />
Amid the feast where civil rights did <lb />
lest reign, <lb />
And watched him in his inimitable way, <lb />
Veil with pretended interest his proud <lb />
disdain. <lb />
One day I missed him from his accustom- <lb />
ed place, <lb />
the rostrum nearest the speakers <lb />
right; <lb />
Again in Convention did he leave the <lb />
race, <lb />
When fortune seemed to favor a more <lb />
hopeful <lb />
And next with policeman due in sad <lb />
ray, <lb />
saw him up the guard house stairway <lb />
borne; <lb />
Approach and read, if read thou canst, <lb />
the lay. <lb />
That what he has per- <lb />
won. <lb />
THE EPITAPH. <lb />
Here rests his head upon the guard house <lb />
floor, <lb />
A youth to honor and to fame unknown; <lb />
Of wealth he had enough but longed for <lb />
more <lb />
And Satan marked him for his own. <lb />
Seek not kind friend, his merits to dis- <lb />
close. <lb />
For that would prove indeed a hopeless <lb />
task. <lb />
But leave him in oblivion to repose. <lb />
With pillowed head upon an empty flask. <lb />
The above poem was banded to <lb />
by a friend-one day last week. It <lb />
is apparently the work of one of <lb />
Republican bosses who while <lb />
presiding over one of their pow-wows <lb />
seems to have become enamored of <lb />
the muses with a result that is <lb />
neither complimentary as to his par <lb />
nor promising as to his own <lb />
