the agents throughout It-, <lb/>
inflame the working people with <lb/>
gilded accounts of prosperity over <lb/>

them from their work and bring <lb/>
them here to feed upon the vitals of <lb/>
honest American labor. These <lb/>

GOOD FROM <lb/>
Chairman was looking as <lb/>
sleek and chipper as a bridegroom, <lb/>
when your correspondent dropped <lb/>
in to pick up any late crumbs about <lb/>
the progress of the campaign, <lb/>
is extremely hopeful of carrying the <lb/>
State of California, and <lb/>
the amount of mail matter <lb/>
which was pointed out as coming, <lb/>
from that State with assurances of <lb/>
Democratic triumph, the Chairman's <lb/>
enthusiasm seems to be well found- <lb/>
ed. Mr. M. Vies <lb/>
resident of the Democratic State <lb/>
Committee of California told your <lb/>
representative that not in years has <lb/>
the State been , <lb/>
in such excellent form. He insists <lb/>
that California is as certain to go; <lb/>
Democratic as Virginia. <lb/>
great on account of his <lb/>
especial championship of the <lb/>
side Chinese <lb/>
Mr. says, caused thous- <lb/>
ands of Democrats to swing in line <lb/>
for him four years ago. This <lb/>
of strength will not only be <lb/>
to the Democracy this <lb/>
year, but the same reasons which, <lb/>
impelled Democrats to support the <lb/>
Republican ticket will under <lb/>
reversed conditions transfer <lb/>
thousands of Republican, votes from <lb/>
Harrison to Cleveland. <lb/>
THE <lb/>
The Harrison about whom there is <lb/>
most talk here just now is not the <lb/>
gentleman whose name heads the <lb/>
Republican National ticket. Of an <lb/>
entirely different brood is he. Sot <lb/>
in many years has any evangelist; <lb/>
created such a stir in religious <lb/>
of wicked Gotham. Ho is <lb/>
known the boy preach <lb/>
and he probably was a boy at <lb/>
some period of his career, <lb/>
one would judge from <lb/>
his appearance, with men about <lb/>
launching into their fourth decade. <lb/>
lie done all but work <lb/>
here during the past three <lb/>
months as a revivalist. Taking up <lb/>
one Methodist after another <lb/>
in those parts of the <lb/>
where the working people be <lb/>
has lead fight against his Satanic <lb/>
majesty with a favor that has borne <lb/>
fruit in thousands of converts. <lb/>
crowds have attended <lb/>
his meetings and sinners <lb/>
have almost fought their way to the <lb/>
anxious scat. <lb/>
is the legend <lb/>
greets those entering the John <lb/>
Street Church, which is at pres- <lb/>
seat of war. The figures <lb/>
signify the number of converts, and <lb/>
I here yet no visible ebbing of the <lb/>
tide. John Street is very near Wall, <lb/>
and took <lb/>
his head quarters there in order to <lb/>
carry the war into the dominion of <lb/>
Mammon and figuratively overturn, <lb/>
the tables of the money changers. <lb/>
These tough old sharks of the <lb/>
every one <lb/>
themselves a trifle <lb/>
too weary headed off the danger <lb/>
of being answered by declining to <lb/>
attend the revival meetings. <lb/>
thronged them, though, with <lb/>
no more serious purpose than to <lb/>
watch the progress the light. It <lb/>
was from these chiefly that the <lb/>
got his recruits. <lb/>
Evangelist Harrison's methods <lb/>
and his power differ from those of, <lb/>
all the great leaders of his guild. <lb/>
He lacks the persuasive eloquence <lb/>
of Moody and his strength is not <lb/>
equal to the sledge hammer blows of <lb/>
Sam Jones. The secrets of his <lb/>
are indomitable energy, won- <lb/>
physical endurance in <lb/>
tense enthusiasm. He will walk up <lb/>
and down the aisles of his church <lb/>
during the progress of a meeting, <lb/>
working his arms like pump bundles. <lb/>
talking to this person and that, and <lb/>
exhorting the congregation <lb/>
ally at n words a gait. <lb/>
There is hardly the slightest pause <lb/>
between seeming to <lb/>
lap over on its one <lb/>
to listen intently in order to <lb/>
keep apace with the frequently <lb/>
discourse. His voice is a rich <lb/>
base, he is tall and rather spare and <lb/>
you may seldom sec him without a <lb/>
short stubble of coarse beard on his <lb/>
otherwise boyish features.<lb/>

Occasionally we hear some man <lb/>
say, he doesn't <lb/>

for they clearly indicate that the <lb/>
party making such expressions is an <lb/>
ignorant man. Ignorant, because <lb/>
he doesn't know the teachings <lb/>
practices of the Radical party. <lb/>
fact that the Radical <lb/>

same materials as it was when in <lb/>

Washington, D. C, August <lb/>
Mr. Cleveland has about given up <lb/>
all hope of getting bis accustomed <lb/>
summer outing this year, owing to <lb/>
the long session of Con- <lb/>
the end which cannot yet I <lb/>
be seen. <lb/>
The Republican Senators arc in <lb/>
a quandary about the tariff. Some <lb/>
want to report a bill, and then ad- <lb/>
join n, some want to report, discuss, <lb/>
and pass a bill, while others want to <lb/>
simply vote on the Mills bill as it, <lb/>
passed the House. Diverse as these <lb/>
opinions are they do not represent <lb/>
all the factions of the o. A <lb/>
majority of the Republican Senators <lb/>
are in favor of passing a substitute <lb/>
for the Mills a caucus <lb/>
has so when the <lb/>
that substitute is <lb/>
discussed, no two of them <lb/>
alike. What the outcome is to <lb/>
be, remains to seen. In the, <lb/>

Assistant Secretary Thompson of <lb/>
the Treasury Department is the <lb/>
right kind of a democrat. In a let- <lb/>
written in answer to a I louse <lb/>
resolution of inquiry as to Canadian <lb/>
discrimination against. American <lb/>
vessels, Mr. Thompson shows that <lb/>
such discrimination exists to a very <lb/>
marked extent upon the Welland <lb/>
canal, and be recommends <lb/>
legislation as the best remedy. <lb/>
That's just the kind of talk. <lb/>
lions are like men, they always it- <lb/>
sped the fellow that strikes back <lb/>
from the shoulder when be IS struck. <lb/>
The Republican Senators <lb/>
anxious to bring about another <lb/>
deadlock in the Home. They are <lb/>
about to tack the Direct Tax bill, <lb/>
that caused the late dead lock, on <lb/>
the Sundry Civil Appropriation bill, <lb/>
as an amendment. When the late <lb/>
dead lock was broken, the House <lb/>
agreed to vote upon this bill in De- <lb/>
when it will be Mire to pass. <lb/>
The stales having waited nearly <lb/>
years for this money could surely <lb/>
wait a more months. This bill <lb/>
is brought forward again at this <lb/>
time, for no other purpose than to <lb/>
make another dead lock. <lb/>

The picture of the first homestead <lb/>
ever taken up in the States <lb/>

Senator Davis was viciously at- <lb/>

that this woman was a fraud <lb/>
of the worst kind, and that the <lb/>

they are not likely to agree to it. <lb/>
In transmitting the annual report <lb/>
of the Civil Service Commission to <lb/>

but comprehensive message on the <lb/>
subject. He thinks that <lb/>

The lie lie Ton tame is <lb/>
correct when it says if people would <lb/>
speak more kindness and repress <lb/>
less t hero would be more gladness l <lb/>

kindness in it; but every heart does <lb/>
not speak. It seems natural to tin <lb/>

repress all is and kind- <lb/>
The real goodness of heart goes to <lb/>

Verily, the human heart does not <lb/>

fulfilled our promise. Give loose <lb/>
rein to the heart when its prompt- <lb/>

The Press Convention. <lb/>
Mr. W. G. in his paper <lb/>
tho Durham Daily Plant, <lb/>
says this of the Press Convention at <lb/>
City last <lb/>
We carefully studied the personnel <lb/>
Convention, it contained <lb/>
no great It, however, had <lb/>
among the number present some of <lb/>
the best fellows in the State, some <lb/>
hardest working men we <lb/>

One thing pleased us, <lb/>
the tone was good. If a sin-, <lb/>
editor misbehaved in any way <lb/>
while at Morehead, or on the way <lb/>
to or from we did not <lb/>
hear of it. Whiskey was plentiful <lb/>
and easily obtainable. Did a single <lb/>
editor became intoxicated f <lb/>

We are glad this is so. think <lb/>
this an improvement. And an <lb/>
in morals is better <lb/>
than an Improvement brilliancy <lb/>
and and sensationalism. <lb/>
We are glad to this testimony. <lb/>
kept our eyes open, and think <lb/>
we are speaking that we. do know. <lb/>
The Poet and <lb/>

lire of the feast we had anticipated. <lb/>
The orator was on but the <lb/>
audience failed to get there. The <lb/>
ninny empty benches sat still and <lb/>
mode no noise, and showed one good <lb/>
trait that some audiences would do <lb/>
well to emulate; not one got and <lb/>
left just as speaker was reach- <lb/>

Taking it all in all Convention <lb/>

the dictatorial tone of advertising <lb/>

that does not pay the rate. <lb/>
This is done in sell defense. No re- <lb/>

some measure, protect- the papers <lb/>

The has always turned a <lb/>

and numerous letters from <lb/>
have been unanswered and cast into <lb/>
the waste basket. All the <lb/>
asks, nil the press of the State <lb/>

The North Carolina editors are <lb/>
working bard, and by hard work <lb/>
and stingy living they make enough <lb/>
to eat for themselves and build up <lb/>
many big men and big towns. <lb/>
If anything is wanted, somebody <lb/>
