in most households, as the shops <lb/>
employ it extensively in packing <lb/>
delicate good. <lb/>
Probably few people have tested <lb/>
its merit as a pencil mark eraser, <lb/>
yet it serves the purpose admirably <lb/>
on paper of some textures often <lb/>
acts more satisfactorily than the <lb/>

it necessary to earn-, it adds far <lb/>
more to the effect of a present than <lb/>

Us the Broom Sometimes. <lb/>
Although the carpet sweeper is a <lb/>
labor saving device, the carpet will <lb/>
a thorough sweeping with a <lb/>
broom occasionally. <lb/>
chairs and couches from the <lb/>
room if convenient, but if not cover <lb/>
them while sweeping. There is <lb/>
nothing so destructive to their beau- <lb/>
as to allow them to become <lb/>
with dust every sweeping day. <lb/>
Open the windows or doors and <lb/>
sweep with quick, firm strokes that <lb/>
will clean the carpet without <lb/>
it. If the broom is dampened <lb/>
frequently, it will not raise a cloud <lb/>
of dust. Or a better plan would be <lb/>
to sprinkle salt over the carpet be- <lb/>
fore sweeping. It cleanses car- <lb/>
pet beautifully and brightens the <lb/>
colors. <lb/>
When the dust has settled, re- <lb/>
move the covers from the furniture <lb/>
and dust the woodwork carefully. <lb/>
Use a soft feather duster for <lb/>
and vases. A large square of <lb/>
cheesecloth is better for other <lb/>
When the dust has settled <lb/>
oil the walls, a cloth about the <lb/>
brush part of the broom and wipe <lb/>
off. <lb/>
How to Clean a Plaster Cast <lb/>
A correspondent of a scientific <lb/>
journal says that a bust or statue <lb/>
can be most thoroughly cleaned pro- <lb/>
it has not been painted, oiled <lb/>
or waxed by inverting it and filling <lb/>
it with water free from iron. The <lb/>
water is then allowed to filter <lb/>
through the plaster. After the <lb/>
has been kept up for a <lb/>
time and the outside surface <lb/>
occasionally washed with water and <lb/>
a soft brush the plaster is allowed <lb/>
to dry. It is then found that all <lb/>
the dust has been wiped out of the <lb/>
pores of tho east, which is thus re- <lb/>
stored to its original whiteness. <lb/>
In the Sickroom. <lb/>
Absolute cleanliness and tidiness <lb/>
arc necessary in a sickroom. The <lb/>
furniture should be simple and ca- <lb/>
of being easily cleansed. <lb/>
Avoid all kinds of woolen draperies <lb/>
and let the curtains be of white <lb/>
washable material. If possible, all <lb/>
medicines and tho attendant para- <lb/>
should be kept out of <lb/>
sight of the patient in on adjoining <lb/>
room. Glasses, spoons, etc., <lb/>
be washed as soon as used and <lb/>
ready for the time when they will <lb/>
again be needed. <lb/>
Dining Room Decoration. <lb/>
A recent idea is to form a border <lb/>
or above a plate rail or <lb/>
shelf in dining room or <lb/>
living room. Quite a effect <lb/>
was lately secured by an artistic <lb/>
orator in a library by hanging a line <lb/>
of old prints just above plate <lb/>
shelf. Another quite novel <lb/>
secured in a dining room by a <lb/>
line of blue, red and white Japanese <lb/>
plates against deep yellow paper <lb/>
above the plate rail. <lb/>
Oil the Machine. <lb/>
Many a sewing machine fails to <lb/>
do as good work as it ought and <lb/>
might because it is not properly oil- <lb/>
ed and cleaned. When it gets gum- <lb/>
med through the use <lb/>
of poor thorough oiling with <lb/>
followed by careful <lb/>
and then with an oiling with <lb/>
good sperm oil, will often greatly <lb/>
its way of running. <lb/>
To Restore Tarnished Silver, <lb/>
Tarnished silver may be restored <lb/>
to brightness by the application of <lb/>
oil used for polishing hardwood <lb/>
floors. The oil should be applied <lb/>
with a flannel cloth and the article <lb/>
briskly rubbed afterward. Silver <lb/>
candlesticks and similar articles may <lb/>
be kept in good condition by <lb/>
rubbing them with flannel <lb/>
and a little floor oil. <lb/>
