A card shuffling machine has been <lb />
Invented by It. P. Bellows of Cleve- <lb />
land. It should make business poor <lb />
for crooked card players. The de- <lb />
vice is complicated, yet simple its <lb />
action. <lb />
The shuffling machine is a metal <lb />
box about IS inches high, <lb />
wide and C inches from front to <lb />
back. All the mechanism is inside. <lb />
The cards are dropped in at the top <lb />
and rest on a tiny shelf. Below <lb />
this there are five small fingers, ore <lb />
en each of five, thin steel blades ex- <lb />
tending across the full width of the <lb />
machine. When a shatter on the <lb />
front is dropped, the shelf falls <lb />
the cards drop upon the blades and <lb />
arc separated into live little <lb />
bunches by Hie . . The <lb />
blades separate, and one by one <lb />
cards drop from the various hunches <lb />
into a receptacle at the bottom, the <lb />
drop being regulated by a clock- <lb />
work mechanism. <lb />
There is now way of telling where <lb />
any particular card will he found <lb />
in the pack after they are shuffled. <lb />
The same card, placed on the top <lb />
of the pack, will rarely be found <lb />
twice in the same place after the <lb />
Inter Ocean. <lb />

Sulphuric Acid For Snake Bites, <lb />
Those who fear snakes or live <lb />

In Atlanta, a small town in <lb />

left hand to make necessary <lb />

NEW YEAR CHANGES. <lb />
Some Present. <lb />
1902. <lb />
We do not remember to have <lb />
read of the occurrence of so many <lb />
horrible accident in the fame <lb />
length of time have been report <lb />
ed in the papers the last few days <lb />
Some or them seemed to chap- <lb />
of horrors. The year closes <lb />
with a record along this line. <lb />
The State has issued a charter <lb />
to the Kinston Eastern railroad, <lb />
with a capital stock of <lb />
The purpose of this company is to <lb />
build a railroad from Kinston to <lb />
some point Wilmington <lb />
road near Wilmington. <lb />
It will open a good section of <lb />
try. Eastern North Carolina needs <lb />
more railroads we hope this <lb />
one will not be long in building. <lb />
The wishes to close <lb />
the year by every one <lb />
who has given us patronage <lb />
1901. It has been a good year <lb />
for the paper we feel gratified <lb />
at the result of the year's work. <lb />
will be our endeavor and hope <lb />
during the new year to merit <lb />
receive even a larger patronage <lb />
than in the past, and to this e-d <lb />
the co operation of all is solicited. <lb />
We stand this evening at the <lb />
threshold of a year, and it is <lb />
an opportune l for reflecting <lb />
upon the past to the <lb />
future. There is not one of us but <lb />
who can recall through the year so <lb />
many blessings for which we should <lb />
fell exceedingly grateful to the <lb />
It is fitting to med- <lb />
these, and to lender to <lb />
Him the praise that is Nor <lb />
is there one who with proper ex- <lb />
can fail to see <lb />
short comings neglected op- <lb />
for doing good. Let <lb />
these be humbly acknowledge and <lb />
repented of, and turn to the new <lb />
year with the resolutions that it <lb />
shall, by Divine help, show a bet- <lb />
record in our lives. If there <lb />
have in the <lb />
past year let us by these, <lb />
forgetting them if possible, and <lb />
look with hope to the new <lb />
to m our duty <lb />
the to <lb />
who says thou not lot I am <lb />

thee; yea, I will Hue; yea, I <lb />
