before many of the holiday purchasers <lb/>
realize It and then tho clerks will <lb/>
run to death to wait on them the <lb/>
pick of the Christmas will be <lb/>

The local stores have begun to dis- <lb/>
play their arrays of beautiful Christ- <lb/>
mas goods and they make a splendid <lb/>
showing, too. Many of them state that <lb/>
they have already started making <lb/>
to the people who are taking some <lb/>
stock In the shop early talk. <lb/>
Greenville is about the shopping <lb/>
center for county and affords the <lb/>
best to be In the county, so the <lb/>
folks who are expecting to <lb/>
chases of holiday goods, should not <lb/>
forget this fact, but should come to <lb/>
where they will have an <lb/>
opportunity to got anything In any line, <lb/>
that they want. <lb/>
It Is here that there will be the <lb/>
largest sales made of Christmas goods <lb/>
ever known before. This Is attributed <lb/>
to the fact that past year has been <lb/>
inch a fine one for the people to make <lb/>
financial gains, and with this as a <lb/>
starter, they It Is sure that the <lb/>
stockings will be packed full this <lb/>
Christmas. <lb/>
The merchants here laying In an <lb/>
unusually heavy supply of <lb/>
goods In order to meet demand, <lb/>
and the best part of It Is that many <lb/>
of the articles, which hitherto <lb/>

Tobacco Already <lb/>
Sold Here. <lb/>
According to the monthly report of <lb/>
Supervisor Wharton, of the local to- <lb/>
market Greenville has sold <lb/>
the mouth of November <lb/>
pounds of tobacco at an average of <lb/>
per hundred pounds. <lb/>
This totals for tho season up to the <lb/>
first of December about seventeen mil- <lb/>
lion pounds, making an average in <lb/>
price of nearly lit for all <lb/>
cos Including the common and good. <lb/>
A tobacconist this morning when <lb/>
speaking of the report, stated that <lb/>
this price will equal any East- <lb/>
Carolina city, and It was probable <lb/>
would lead all others. <lb/>
It la predicted among the ware- <lb/>
housemen that this market will sell <lb/>
close to three pounds more <lb/>
before the close of the season, while <lb/>
some expect the totals for tho season <lb/>
even more. <lb/>

SELF <lb/>
Self supporting agriculture Is the subject of an article <lb/>
la the current University News Letter by Mr. Bradford <lb/>
Knapp. Farm Demonstrator Chief, who have <lb/>
a good thing in the South. If we will only go to work and <lb/>
make agriculture self-supporting. <lb/>
The plan of the Federal Department of Agriculture Is to <lb/>
foster home gardens, to encourage thrift by teaching people <lb/>
to can fruit and vegetables for home use as they do in every <lb/>
thrifty community, to have farmers grow their own corn, <lb/>
oats, hay, peas, beans, potatoes, and some cane or sorghum <lb/>
for syrup, and to produce their own meat supply from a <lb/>
Industry in poultry, hogs and cattle. <lb/>
course this would require some reduction of the cotton <lb/>
acreage, unless more acres were taken but under this <lb/>
plan we would establish a live-stock industry sufficient to <lb/>
utilize the waste land. On every farm there is waste land <lb/>
which could be made productive live stock. <lb/>
is purely a business proposition, but one that has <lb/>
been sadly neglected In all our Southern territory. <lb/>
bankers the power, In my Judgment, to <lb/>
a safe, sound, self-supporting agriculture in the South <lb/>
If they will do It. The key to the whole situation lies In <lb/>
the hands of the bankers and credit merchants of the South. <lb/>
the bankers and credit merchants of the South still <lb/>
fail to lend their constructive backing to the establishment Phone <lb/>
of self-supporting agriculture, and are still going to make <lb/>
their loans and finance the agriculture of the South as a <lb/>
one-crop agriculture, then we are going to have n one-crop <lb/>
agriculture until such time as human nature breaks and we <lb/>
have a revolution which will overthrow tho present sys- <lb/>
you blame the farmer, especially the little farmer <lb/>
or tenant, if he docs not follow the advice of <lb/>
and docs not diversify, when he well knows that when he <lb/>
goes to the small banker or supply merchant of the South <lb/>
the basis of his credit Is on the number of acres of the <lb/>

says it is brought about by the victim eating something <lb/>
which failed to digest in a thorough and workmanlike man- <lb/>
causing him to get up in his sleep and hunt around <lb/>
restlessly for the ipecac. Some authorities believe it is due <lb/>
to the same microbe that produces the nightmare which <lb/>
winds up in the Indian war whoop, but this is merely sup- <lb/>
position, us nobody has even seen tho microbe in question <lb/>

call them that, and there is no excuse for them to be <lb/>
there Is plenty of chances for them to secure employ- <lb/>
The force should exercise an eternal vigilance <lb/>
