Question Passed Up <lb />
The County Commissioners <lb />
day ended a two meeting in <lb />
which the usual amount of routine <lb />
work and business was disposed of. <lb />
Most of the matters under <lb />
were not of great interest to the en- <lb />
tire county but were local matters <lb />
Ono thing of importance was a -.- <lb />
solution bearing on the Recorder <lb />
Court for Pitt county. At a former <lb />
meeting the Hoard had expressed it- <lb />
self as in favor of such a court, but <lb />
at this meeting a resolution was <lb />
adopted rescinding their former <lb />
or recommendation and <lb />
that they would not I <lb />
the formation of such a court tot <lb />
this county. By this action the mat- <lb />
is now up to the members of th. <lb />
this county. It is <lb />
not known what action they will take <lb />
on tho question <lb />

For three generations an old grand- <lb />
father's clock by W. Nash of <lb />
East Eighteenth street has count- <lb />
ed off the seconds, according to a Kan- <lb />
City correspondent of the <lb />
York World. <lb />
Seventy-five years ago the mother <lb />
of Mr. Nash, then a young girl, sent <lb />
back to her old homo in County Ty- <lb />
Ireland, for things for her <lb />
new home. She was to marry an <lb />
Irish lad she had met In the new <lb />
try. <lb />
Most important of her orders was <lb />
one for a clock to be made especially <lb />
for her. <lb />
is an old clockmaker at <lb />
she told her sweetheart, <lb />
clocks are the finest to be <lb />
had. Ills name is Jonathan Frost and <lb />
his clocks, they Bay. will last <lb />
The clock came at last. It was in <lb />
a case of cherry wood, grand to be- <lb />
hold. But Its most interesting part, <lb />
at least to our modern eyes, is the <lb />
works. <lb />
The wheels, with one exception, are <lb />
of wood. So carefully were they <lb />
carved and of such fine, hard wood <lb />
were they made, that today the old <lb />
clock still keeps almost perfect time. <lb />
There Is one small wheel it. the <lb />
case. <lb />
Only twice has It ever had to be re- <lb />
then a thorough cleaning <lb />
was all that was necessary. In 1859 <lb />
it was sent to a clock repairer, L. <lb />
In Platte City, Mo. And <lb />
years later, In 1909, It was sent again <lb />
to him. Although he was then an old <lb />
man. his hands were still skilled In <lb />
the repairing of delicate machinery- <lb />
However, the old clock was once <lb />
more merely in need of cleaning and <lb />
It was soon sent back to the home of <lb />
Mr. Nash, where it is now ticking as <lb />
cheerfully as ever. There is no <lb />
cation that it will cease soon. It re- <lb />
quires winding every hours. There <lb />
is also an alarm, which is as good as <lb />
ever. The clock has outlived Its first <lb />
owner by many years, as well as a <lb />
number of others In the family. <lb />

SEER FEARS COLD <lb />
Prophet Delivers Opinion <lb />
That We Ar Facing a Very <lb />
Hard Winter. <lb />
John Drake, the town- <lb />
weather prophet, <lb />
a cold winter, says a Reading <lb />
dispatch to the Philadelphia Rec- <lb />
will be a white <lb />
he said. am positive that the <lb />
day season this year will not be green. <lb />
It Is a difficult matter to say whether <lb />
there will be enough snow for sleigh- <lb />
A number of local forecasters agree <lb />
with Drake in this respect, saying that <lb />
surely the will be deep this com- <lb />
winter, because the weeds are so <lb />
very high. From the sections where <lb />
there was a frost recently It Is re- <lb />
ported that the tips of the leaves on <lb />
the hickory trees point skyward. If <lb />
the tips curl downward when touched <lb />
by frost, a mild winter Is certain, but <lb />
when they turn upward It Is a sign <lb />
that they are winter leaves and that <lb />
there Is going to be plenty of wind <lb />
blowing and plenty of snow whirling <lb />
among the trees. <lb />
This is known as off for <lb />
chestnuts, but the twigs are unusually <lb />
loaded with burs. This Indicates to <lb />
some folks that surely a hard winter <lb />
is ahead. It is said that Providence In <lb />
this way provides plenty of food for <lb />
the squirrels to store away In the <lb />
low trees. <lb />

The siege of Fort Erie which <lb />

sortie to destroy the enemy's outer <lb />

Inflicting a loss of of the <lb />

November the Americans abandoned <lb />

The Daily Reflector this month <lb />
gins a new method of collecting sub- <lb />
from its subscribers living <lb />
in the town whose papers deliver- <lb />
ed by carriers. In the past It <lb />
been the custom to make out bills <lb />
monthly, most of the subscribers <lb />
to pay by the month, and n <lb />
out by a collector. By the collector <lb />
failing to or find some of the sub- <lb />
the bills would be turned <lb />
back to the office uncollected. <lb />
when another month expired and the <lb />
amount added to the bill it often <lb />
caused a contention on the part of <lb />
the subscriber that he had paid the <lb />
previous, a loss frequently resulting <lb />
to the paper. <lb />
To avoid this and loss <lb />
the method of sending out the <lb />
by a collector has been discontinued <lb />
and hereafter the subscriptions <lb />
collected by the carrier boys on <lb />
their respective routes. Each carrier <lb />
is provided with a card for each sub- <lb />
scriber on his route, the cards <lb />
twelve coupons to represent <lb />
twelve months of the year. As the <lb />
subscription each month is paid <lb />
corresponding coupon will be torn off <lb />
signed on the back and left with <lb />
subscriber as a for the <lb />
paid for. In this way the subscriber <lb />
can always tell by looking at the <lb />
card just what he owes. <lb />
In making these collections month- <lb />
th carrier, Instead of looking up <lb />
the subscriber at random as a <lb />
collector had to do. will take the card <lb />
the residence or place where the <lb />
paper is delivered and <lb />
will expect payment to be made <lb />
To facilitate this the subscriber Is <lb />
asked to leave the amount of the sub <lb />
cents a month, with <lb />
some one at the place his paper is <lb />
delivered, so the carrier will not <lb />
have to call more than once for it. <lb />
The carriers will begin the first <lb />
each month to collect for the month I <lb />
just past, and will be given only <lb />
the tenth of tho month to make re- <lb />
port on all subscribers on their <lb />
routes. Tho carriers will be <lb />
paid a commission on the collections <lb />
made, hence the subscribers by -r- <lb />
to pay promptly each mo-mi <lb />
on presentation of card will <lb />
courage the boys in their work, and at <lb />
the MUM time help the paper <lb />
also avoid any contention or annoy- <lb />
over accounts. <lb />
This week the carriers will start <lb />
out collecting for the month of Jan <lb />
and on their first call will also <lb />
take a statement of whatever the <lb />
subscriber owed previous to tho first <lb />
of the year. We hope the subscriber <lb />
will promptly pay th back dues, <lb />
then keep up regularly with <lb />
monthly coupon payment. <lb />
