Harry Thaw has at last been brought <lb />
back to New York. He will now <lb />
begin his fight against being put back <lb />
Harry did not have a <lb />
pull like that fellow who last <lb />
year killed his son-in-law in. what <lb />
nearly every body thought except the <lb />
cold-blood and acquitted <lb />
It is rather peculiar that New <lb />
state would expend so much money to <lb />
secure Thaw when such a miscarriage <lb />
of justice was being pulled of at <lb />
The British navy has. so to speak, <lb />
evened things up with the Germans <lb />
In winning their victory over the <lb />
squadron which was attempting a <lb />
raid on English coast towns. This <lb />
war has been rather peculiar In that <lb />
no naval battles have occurred be <lb />
tween evenly matched fleets, that <lb />
if we listen to reports. The reports of <lb />
this battle says the speedier British <lb />
ships overtook and sank and damage I <lb />
part of the fleet. <lb />
they were unevenly matched. <lb />

The The lat <lb />
General passed what is <lb />
known as the Model Law for <lb />
births and deaths with addition <lb />
of what appeared to be an <lb />
amendment. To this <lb />
the federal authorities take strong ex- <lb />
and refuse to recognize <lb />
Carolina as a state along <lb />
with some twenty-five or more other <lb />
states in the Union. <lb />
At the present session, a bill was <lb />
introduced to- repeal this amendment <lb />
largely because the significance of <lb />
this amendment was not understood. <lb />
the House declined lo repeal it. fear- <lb />
that it Might possibly work <lb />
hardship in rural districts. <lb />
in twenty-seven other <lb />
states, however, does not Indicate <lb />
that such amendment is necessary or <lb />
that its absence works hardship <lb />
any one. This means that while <lb />
North Carolina has a registration law <lb />
on her books which costs the <lb />
110.000 a year, her results will not <lb />
be recognized by the government. <lb />
the eyes of the world of <lb />
Carolina, she will be recognized as a <lb />
second rate state, with and yet with <lb />
out a Vital Statistics law. <lb />
We in North Carolina feel <lb />
confident that the death rate in a <lb />
number of counties, as for instance <lb />
Robeson. Nash Buncombe, and many <lb />
other mountain counties is far below <lb />
the average in the United States and, <lb />
if our figures were accepted by the <lb />
federal authorities, it would be a <lb />
splendid advertisement for North Car- <lb />
and be the mean of bringing <lb />
here many desirable people not only <lb />
from northern states but from <lb />
countries. However, without th <lb />
sanction of the federal authorities, <lb />
our figures will of necessity be look <lb />

Engineers and commissioners <lb />
been requested to bring samples of <lb />
sand-clay and . <lb />
samples to be taken from those <lb />
of the roads which have stood <lb />
up bad weather of the <lb />
sent winter, and also those portions <lb />
of the roads which gone it <lb />
pieces during this time. These <lb />
will be tested during the Institute <lb />
and it is believed that definite <lb />
sons can be worked out why one <lb />
road went to and another stood <lb />
up as a hard surface. <lb />
Already considerable progress <lb />
been made in regard to working out <lb />
a practical scheme for the <lb />
of our highways, and this Will <lb />
be thoroughly discussed at the <lb />
lute, and it expected that as a re- <lb />
a satisfactory method will be <lb />
worked out which can be recommend <lb />

Your Farm. <lb />
Many advocated for a number <lb />
years the naming of every farm <lb />

exchanges this week we were struck <lb />
by the following timely article in the <lb />
a farm a name is <lb />

to farm that Is most desirable <lb />
In it promotes loyalty to <lb />
place, fosters a pride in it, and helps <lb />
to hold family together Hot <lb />
much to the farm an <lb />

Want Better <lb />
Why do we have to put up with <lb />
muddy streets and almost impassable <lb />
roads Here's the answer in a nut- <lb />
shell We spend too much money <lb />
for government. The salary list of <lb />
the county officials of Cherokee has <lb />
been about doubled since the county <lb />
was formed, and we can't see that <lb />
we are getting any better service to- <lb />
day than we did sixteen years ago. <lb />
It costs a great deal more to run <lb />
today than It dad twenty <lb />
years ago and yet we cannot see that <lb />
we are getting any better <lb />
The whole trouble lies in the tact <lb />
that too many people are milking th- <lb />
to the fact that is never in war <lb />
and always in peace. It is the begin- <lb />
of existence, the commencement <lb />
of ease and the end of trouble. With- <lb />
out it there would be no meat, no <lb />
and no heaven. It is the center of <lb />
honesty, makes love perfect and with- <lb />
out it there would be no editors, devils <lb />
or news Fourth estate <lb />
It would be much better to em- <lb />
ploy one or two competent men to ma <lb />
the municipality and pay them a res- <lb />
wage than to employ a score <lb />
or more and pay each of them a small <lb />
wage. A movement be put on <lb />
foot to have the commission form <lb />

Question Passed Up <lb />
The County Commissioners <lb />
day ended a two meeting in <lb />
which the usual amount of routine <lb />
work and business was disposed of. <lb />
Most of the matters under <lb />
were not of great interest to the en- <lb />
tire county but were local matters <lb />
Ono thing of importance was a -.- <lb />
solution bearing on the Recorder <lb />
Court for Pitt county. At a former <lb />
meeting the Hoard had expressed it- <lb />
self as in favor of such a court, but <lb />
at this meeting a resolution was <lb />
adopted rescinding their former <lb />
or recommendation and <lb />
that they would not I <lb />
the formation of such a court tot <lb />
this county. By this action the mat- <lb />
is now up to the members of th. <lb />
this county. It is <lb />
not known what action they will take <lb />
on tho question <lb />
