BETTER CROPS <lb/>
TOR OLD PITT <lb/>
Editor Reflector; <lb/>
have read with interest the <lb/>

of the tine crops certain <lb/>
township have this year <lb/>
and also the note coming through <lb/>
Sheriff Dudley of the thousand acres <lb/>
corn he saw -near Pantego from <lb/>
Which he thinks the yield will average <lb/>
barrels to the acre. Of course <lb/>
that is good corn, and makes glad the <lb/>
hearts of the farmers when they see <lb/>
sin harvest in prospect. <lb/>
believe ill farming, and rejoice <lb/>
with the farmers when a bountiful <lb/>
yield comes lo reward his labors, it <lb/>
is more than gratifying to <lb/>
plate the great agricultural <lb/>
County has made in the last <lb/>
years. The farmers through <lb/>

anti-typhoid campaign is about <lb/>
to get the best of me. People are <lb/>
coming in from all sides, and the work <lb/>
has been heavy. The biggest day <lb/>
have had was last week at Spring, pride. <lb/>
Hope. were vaccinated and pro-j drove of sheep, and in two others <lb/>
more turned away because head of hogs, most of them red <lb/>
the vaccine gave out. never had <lb/>
farms, and have determined to take <lb/>
advantage of these opportunities. <lb/>
They are no longer satisfied to go on <lb/>
In the old way of making about five <lb/>
barrels of corn, or one-fourth of a <lb/>
hale of cotton to the acre. With <lb/>
changes that have come in improved <lb/>
methods and machinery, more <lb/>
cultivation, and the application <lb/>
i. business ideas and principals in <lb/>
farm management, they seeing the <lb/>
yield of their farms doubled time and <lb/>
again, and such things as crop failures <lb/>
are becoming unknown. <lb/>
love to read of what the farmers <lb/>
are doing, and wish more of them <lb/>
various parts of the county would <lb/>
write The Reflector about their own <lb/>
and their neighbors crops, when they <lb/>
have something worth talking about. <lb/>
This, will prove a others <lb/>
to improve their farms and make bet- <lb/>
tor crops. <lb/>
I have in mind to say something <lb/>
the crops now growing <lb/>
On the farm of Mr. O. L. Joyner, his <lb/>
home place . two-and-a-half miles <lb/>
above Greenville. Not only are these <lb/>
crops admired by all of us that pass <lb/>
that way, but people from town drive <lb/>
out to look at them. Along the road <lb/>
are thirty acres in as tine as <lb/>
any one can wish to see. It will <lb/>
most hide a tall man in walking <lb/>
through it. and will average o feet. <lb/>
It is being topped to leaves <lb/>
and when you consider that ordinarily <lb/>
to leaves high is a good crop, <lb/>
cu get and idea of how fine this is. <lb/>
As to other crops on this same farm <lb/>
Mr. Joyner has thirty acres in peanuts <lb/>
that are luxurious in growth, forty- <lb/>
live acres in corn from which he ex- <lb/>
to gather not less than five <lb/>
hundred barrels, and about a hundred <lb/>
acres in alfalfa, crimson clover, peas, <lb/>
and oilier forage crops. He <lb/>
to-cut a crop of hay by the <lb/>
of August and will follow it With <lb/>
three other cuttings ten days apart, <lb/>
having planted with that view. His <lb/>
extensive forage crops are because <lb/>
of his stock farm which is his chief <lb/>
In one pasture he has a large <lb/>
vaccine gave out. <lb/>
hookworm campaign in which so <lb/>
interest was <lb/>
Administering the vaccine is <lb/>
painless. It does not hurt near- <lb/>
so much as being stuck with a <lb/>
needle or pin. No open or running <lb/>
sore results as in the case of small- <lb/>
pox vaccine. A slight swelling usual- <lb/>
occurs, and some soreness and <lb/>
tenderness, but these begin to subside <lb/>
after twelve or fifteen hours and dis- <lb/>
appear in from thirty-six to forty- <lb/>
eight hours. Moderate headache <lb/>
curs in about one person out of <lb/>
twenty, and In rare instances, one per <lb/>
cent or less, this symptom is quite <lb/>
severe. No serious results have ever <lb/>
occurred either in slate or In the <lb/>
hundreds of thousands of cases in the <lb/>
army or navy. Three applications <lb/>
about a week or ten days apart are <lb/>
necessary to produce immunity. <lb/>
As to efficiency, it may be said that <lb/>
In the army where statistics are avail- <lb/>
able anti-typhoid vaccination has re- <lb/>
the typhoid case rate to less <lb/>
than one per cent of what it was prior <lb/>
to vaccination, and the typhoid death <lb/>
rate was entirely abolished last year. <lb/>
The length of immunity conferred <lb/>
by the vaccine is not known, but it <lb/>
thought lo be at least four years. At <lb/>
least It Is well worth one's trouble to <lb/>
be vaccinated when we recall that 1.- <lb/>
North Carolinians died of typhoid <lb/>
last year and about were sick <lb/>
for several weeks with heavy loss <lb/>
from bills and other <lb/>
breed, while his cattle pasture <lb/>
dairy barns together contain about <lb/>
head of fine cattle. <lb/>
By a thorough system of tiling and <lb/>
constant improvement Mr. Joyner has <lb/>
brought this farm to a high state of <lb/>
cultivation. Just now he Is Installing <lb/>
a ram with pipe lines from a flowing <lb/>
spring reservoir to large tanks in <lb/>
the pastures to keep his stock sup- <lb/>
plied with an abundance of running <lb/>

As had been little Willie <lb/>

meditated purpose of politically in- <lb/>
In- our Honorable Board <lb/>
of County Commissioners, the two <lb/>
members of the lower House of the <lb/>
Legislature, and, incidentally, every <lb/>
voter in the County whose judgment <lb/>
ran counter to the imperious will of <lb/>
the little Dictator of the rapidly <lb/>
vanishing of the once formidable In- <lb/>
dependent party of Pitt County. <lb/>
The organization having been com- <lb/>
with that imposing specimen <lb/>
of humanity, Mr. as <lb/>
a committee was <lb/>
pointed to draw up articles of dis- <lb/>
satisfaction of the manner in <lb/>
the officers of our County are <lb/>
and, if need be, to impeach the <lb/>
whole bunch. But before this com- <lb/>
could retire and proceed with <lb/>
their deliberations, it was necessary <lb/>
that their duty should be made <lb/>
plain. Hence, the Hon. Senator <lb/>
was recognized for a few remarks on <lb/>
the becoming issues responsible for <lb/>
the convention of sixty two people <lb/>
writer and a few of his friends <lb/>
In one of the busiest times <lb/>
that ever hit the unhappy but pros <lb/>

for himself in the presence of the <lb/>
most Noble so little Willie <lb/>
not only but, as it appeared, <lb/>
was delighted to hand out a few <lb/>
thoughts, of many months standing <lb/>
for the special consideration of the <lb/>
Resolution committee. He charged <lb/>
them to take into consideration <lb/>
and sundry offenses high <lb/>
committed against them by one <lb/>
Clark and the County Commissioner. <lb/>
Among the offenses com- <lb/>
by Clark was a reckless and <lb/>
damnable attempt to destroy the to- <lb/>
industry in Pitt County and to <lb/>
foster petty coat administration on <lb/>
the people. The County Commission <lb/>
had contrary to law denied the <lb/>
people the of voting on a <lb/>
certain road law of which he was the <lb/>
father; one of them had engaged In <lb/>
the business of selling rotten meat <lb/>
other four had paid for It <lb/>
out of the County treasure, they had <lb/>
betrayed the people in their failure <lb/>
to build the Stock fence back <lb/>
on the old line, they had tampered <lb/>
with the County Home proposition and <lb/>
in many ways squandered <lb/>
money. These and numerous <lb/>
oilier offenses <lb/>
peace and dignity of County's citizen- <lb/>
ship the committee were earnest- <lb/>
adjured to ponder in deciding what <lb/>
should be put into their article of <lb/>
impeachment. <lb/>

The preliminary report of the State <lb/>
Board of Health on the vital statistics <lb/>
for last year is just being made The <lb/>
figures tor last year cover only the. <lb/>
deaths in towns having a population <lb/>
of or more. This really means <lb/>
only about one-sixth of the population <lb/>
of the state. Beginning with this <lb/>
year the new vital statistics law <lb/>
figures will be available for the en- <lb/>
tire State not only for deaths, but also <lb/>
for births. <lb/>
From the figures completed w <lb/>
days ago, it was found there <lb/>
a total deaths from typhoid <lb/>
fever in the towns of the State having <lb/>
a population of over I. This would <lb/>
mean approximately 1,470 for the en- <lb/>
Stale against 1913 figures <lb/>
alone it gives us a typhoid death rate <lb/>
q or based on the aver- <lb/>
age for the last three years it gives <lb/>
us a rate of 59.2 per <lb/>
against the average typhoid death rate <lb/>
of 21.0 per iii the United <lb/>

This, iii the opinion the Board <lb/>

as the index of the sanitary <lb/>
