DOGS AS ARTILLERY HORSES <lb />
Proposition Under Consideration in <lb />
France Seems to Have Much to <lb />
Recommend It. <lb />
The French First army corps Is said <lb />
to be considering the adoption of dogs <lb />
for hauling artillery The dogs In <lb />
question are the big Flemish animals, <lb />
which are largely utilized In the <lb />
of France for dragging milk and <lb />
other vehicles <lb />
From the economic standpoint there <lb />
Is a good deal to he said in favor of <lb />
the replacement of the horse by the <lb />
dog so far as light artillery Is con- <lb />
A Flemish dos can be <lb />
bought for francs, and cost of <lb />
feeding it does not exceed fifty <lb />
centimes a day The lowest price <lb />
of an artillery horse is francs, and <lb />
the daily cost of Its upkeep amounts <lb />
to two francs In other words, the <lb />
first cost of horse Is at least four <lb />
times as great, and It costs four times <lb />
as much to feed Moreover, for <lb />
francs It Is possible lo buy a dog In <lb />

In the old way of making about five <lb />
barrels of corn, or one-fourth of a <lb />
hale of cotton to the acre. With <lb />
changes that have come in improved <lb />
methods and machinery, more <lb />
cultivation, and the application <lb />
i. business ideas and principals in <lb />
farm management, they seeing the <lb />
yield of their farms doubled time and <lb />

are becoming unknown. <lb />
love to read of what the farmers <lb />
are doing, and wish more of them <lb />
various parts of the county would <lb />

and their neighbors crops, when they <lb />
have something worth talking about. <lb />
This, will prove a others <lb />
to improve their farms and make bet- <lb />
tor crops. <lb />
I have in mind to say something <lb />
the crops now growing <lb />
On the farm of Mr. O. L. Joyner, his <lb />
home place . two-and-a-half miles <lb />
above Greenville. Not only are these <lb />
crops admired by all of us that pass <lb />
that way, but people from town drive <lb />
out to look at them. Along the road <lb />
are thirty acres in as tine as <lb />
any one can wish to see. It will <lb />
most hide a tall man in walking <lb />
through it. and will average o feet. <lb />
It is being topped to leaves <lb />
and when you consider that ordinarily <lb />
to leaves high is a good crop, <lb />
cu get and idea of how fine this is. <lb />
As to other crops on this same farm <lb />
Mr. Joyner has thirty acres in peanuts <lb />
that are luxurious in growth, forty- <lb />
live acres in corn from which he ex- <lb />
to gather not less than five <lb />
hundred barrels, and about a hundred <lb />
acres in alfalfa, crimson clover, peas, <lb />
and oilier forage crops. He <lb />
to-cut a crop of hay by the <lb />
of August and will follow it With <lb />
three other cuttings ten days apart, <lb />
having planted with that view. His <lb />
extensive forage crops are because <lb />
of his stock farm which is his chief <lb />
In one pasture he has a large <lb />
vaccine gave out. <lb />
hookworm campaign in which so <lb />
interest was <lb />
Administering the vaccine is <lb />
painless. It does not hurt near- <lb />
so much as being stuck with a <lb />
needle or pin. No open or running <lb />
sore results as in the case of small- <lb />
pox vaccine. A slight swelling usual- <lb />
occurs, and some soreness and <lb />
tenderness, but these begin to subside <lb />
after twelve or fifteen hours and dis- <lb />
appear in from thirty-six to forty- <lb />
eight hours. Moderate headache <lb />
curs in about one person out of <lb />
twenty, and In rare instances, one per <lb />
cent or less, this symptom is quite <lb />
severe. No serious results have ever <lb />
occurred either in slate or In the <lb />
hundreds of thousands of cases in the <lb />
army or navy. Three applications <lb />
about a week or ten days apart are <lb />
necessary to produce immunity. <lb />
As to efficiency, it may be said that <lb />
In the army where statistics are avail- <lb />
able anti-typhoid vaccination has re- <lb />
the typhoid case rate to less <lb />
than one per cent of what it was prior <lb />
to vaccination, and the typhoid death <lb />
rate was entirely abolished last year. <lb />
The length of immunity conferred <lb />
by the vaccine is not known, but it <lb />
thought lo be at least four years. At <lb />
least It Is well worth one's trouble to <lb />
be vaccinated when we recall that 1.- <lb />
North Carolinians died of typhoid <lb />
last year and about were sick <lb />
for several weeks with heavy loss <lb />
from bills and other <lb />
breed, while his cattle pasture <lb />
dairy barns together contain about <lb />
head of fine cattle. <lb />
By a thorough system of tiling and <lb />
constant improvement Mr. Joyner has <lb />
brought this farm to a high state of <lb />
cultivation. Just now he Is Installing <lb />

Among the offenses com- <lb />
