Value of Trees. <lb/>
Th soil is a resource of priceless <lb/>
value. Its formation on rocks la ex- <lb/>
slow. According to Prof. J. <lb/>
Bowman, many glacial scratches that <lb/>
were made on rock during the <lb/>
glacial period, between and 78.- <lb/>
years ago, are still as fresh as If <lb/>
had been made only yesterday. <lb/>
Yet since the glaciers thus recorded <lb/>
themselves man has come up from <lb/>
cave and the stone hammer. Seventy <lb/>
thousand years Is a very short time <lb/>
for the development of a soil cover; <lb/>
for man It means a period great <lb/>
that the mind can hardly grasp it. The <lb/>
cutting off of the trees exposes the <lb/>
soil so that the rain upon it, and <lb/>
since It bas lost the protection that <lb/>
the roots and the litter on ground <lb/>
afforded the soil Is soon washed <lb/>
away. In fifty years a single lumber <lb/>
merchant can deprive the of soil <lb/>
that required 10.000 years to form. <lb/>
