WASHINGTON, D. C, Oct <lb />
normal annual production of <lb />
cured tobacco on a farm-weight bas- <lb />
is is estimated to be about <lb />
pounds, according to Bulletin No. <lb />
of the Department of Agriculture. <lb />
This type of tobacco is the only Amer- <lb />
grown variety that has shown <lb />
a tendency to expand our exports. <lb />
About per cent, or around 90,000.- <lb />
pounds, is exported and the re- <lb />
is used in domestic <lb />
tilings considered, this Hue- <lb />
cured tobacco is unsurpassed in <lb />
states the report, <lb />
it is adapted to a variety of <lb />
uses, including granulated and cut <lb />
smoking tobacco, both paper and all <lb />
tobacco cigarettes, and plug filler and <lb />
wrapper; in fact, it is adapted to all <lb />
the regular forms In which tobacco <lb />
is used except standard cigars and <lb />
In color and general appear- <lb />
it Is very attractive, while its <lb />
low nicotine content, mildness, <lb />
sweetness, fragrance, and good <lb />
keeping qualities render it very sat <lb />
to the <lb />
The use of flues in curing <lb />
co became popular after the close <lb />
of the Civil War and by the middle <lb />
eighties the demand had increased so <lb />
that about counties in Virginia and <lb />
North Carolina had been planted to <lb />
this variety. There arc a <lb />
of varieties, of flue-cured <lb />
prominently among which the, <lb />
Warne, Yellow White-stem <lb />
Big Adcock, Ad- <lb />
kin, Willow-Loaf, Gooch, Tilley, and <lb />
Hosier. The Warne is the standard <lb />
wrapper type and perhaps the most <lb />
popular. The Adcock is a great fa- <lb />
in the noted <lb />
section of county. <lb />
Ninth Carolina, while the Is <lb />
popular as an early maturing variety. <lb />
A; art from the natural character <lb />
of the soil Itself, there is no more <lb />
Important matter for the <lb />
grower to consider than the manage <lb />
of bis fields. Indeed the char- <lb />
of the tobacco produced will de- <lb />
pend as much on how the fields have <lb />
been handled in rotation between th i <lb />
successive tobacco as upon the <lb />
fertilizer used on the cultivation <lb />
en directly to the tobacco crop itself. <lb />
Tobacco land should be so handled <lb />
as to keep in good life. A liberal j <lb />
supply of vegetable matter in an ad- <lb />
stage of decay is highly de-i <lb />
but it should be of the <lb />
not excessively rich in ammonia. <lb />
It is well known that the organic <lb />
matter of freshly cleared or broom- <lb />
sedge fields is of a kind well suited <lb />
to tobacco. It consists principally of <lb />
dead leaves, twigs, roots pine tags, <lb />
and roots. Such <lb />
table matter, while poor in ammonia, <lb />
by its ample volume makes the sol. <lb />
very mellow and friable and of good <lb />
water-holding capacity. There Is <lb />
probably no better humus crop for <lb />
rotation than herd's-grass or red top <lb />
Specking, or as It Is <lb />
generally called is the most common <lb />
disease injury to which tobacco In <lb />
the flue-cured is subject. It <lb />
Is believed to be a disease, dis- <lb />
by spores. The only <lb />
method of reducing the injury <lb />
to the crop caused by the disease Is <lb />
by using potash more liberally In the <lb />
fertilizer, which seems to Increase <lb />
the resistance of the plant to the dis- <lb />
ease. <lb />

A better showing has never been <lb />
made by the banks of Greenville than <lb />
is the case in the recent statements <lb />
which they have issued. All of the <lb />
banks together unite to make Green- <lb />
business rise into the millions. <lb />
The deposits in all of them have in- <lb />
creased very greatly during the past <lb />
few months, and the effect of the <lb />
high prices of tobacco and cotton is <lb />
being felt very materially. <lb />
Many of the deposit their <lb />
money with the banks as soon a. <lb />
they are paid by the warehouses, and <lb />
thus increase the holdings of the <lb />
banks as well as start an account <lb />
of their own. <lb />
The total resources of the banks <lb />
amount to almost two millions of <lb />
dollars, and the money In the <lb />
cf the hanks has earned a large per- <lb />
cent for the stockholders. All of them <lb />
are In fine shape, and they have <lb />
progress which cause every <lb />
person In Greenville to feel proud. <lb />
Tho condition of the banks of a <lb />
town may be said to be a pretty good <lb />
Indication of the class of people <lb />
in the town, and, if tills be the <lb />
case, the people of Greenville are <lb />
very progressive in every way. The <lb />
statements of the banks show that <lb />
they believe in depositing their <lb />
money in places of safe keeping <lb />
Deposits in the local hanks amount <lb />
i t three quarters of a million <lb />
dollars, and other proportions of the <lb />
business of the bank are the same. <lb />

Days to be celebrated as <lb />
by all the people throughout tin- <lb />

The children should have the <lb />

A part of this day should be <lb />

Children in school, the valuable in- <lb />
formation contained In the bulletin <lb />
on Roads and Arbor Day, kind- <lb />
prepared at my request by Miss <lb />
Berry and Mr. Holmes of the North <lb />

should In- spin ill actual work by <lb />

building and the outhouses, and in <lb />
laying off and grading walks through <lb />
the school yard and roads leading <lb />
thereto. Valuable suggestions for <lb />
such work will be round in this <lb />
I suggest that the road workers be <lb />
n quested and urged to spend Thurs- <lb />
day, or at least a part of the day, in <lb />
working the roads leading to the <lb />
school houses, and that they be In- <lb />
by the women of the neighbor- <lb />
hood to meet at the school house on <lb />
that day for dinner, and to join with <lb />
the children in their work on the <lb />
school grounds. The women of <lb />
neighborhood might be Invited to <lb />
come to the school house Thursday <lb />
morning and participate with the <lb />
and teachers in the celebration <lb />
and in the improvement work of th <lb />
morning. <lb />
The gathering of all the best <lb />
of the school district about the <lb />
school on tills day, spending a so- <lb />
hour together at dinner, Joining <lb />
with the teachers In an afternoon's <lb />
work, by side for the Improve- <lb />
of their school, will afford a <lb />
fine opportunity to become acquaint- <lb />
ed with the conditions and needs of <lb />
meet and to know <lb />
teachers and children, and will result, <lb />
I doubt not. in awakening Interest <lb />
end stimulating pride In the school <lb />
and incalculable benefit in many ways <lb />
to the school and community. <lb />
To become permanent all great <lb />
movements for civic and industrial <lb />
improvement must begin with the <lb />
teaching of the children In the <lb />
schools. The rising generation should <lb />
be taught the necessity and Import- <lb />
of good roads in North Carolina; <lb />
should he brought to see tho relation <lb />
of these to the future comfort, <lb />
and prosperity of the state along <lb />
all lines. Nothing is essential <lb />
than good roads for Increasing tin <lb />

Consolidation and transportation, s- <lb />
necessary for larger schools, larger <lb />

RECEIVE PLANS <lb />
Specifications for New Bridge at <lb />

Cost Has Been De- <lb />
Plans and specifications for the con- <lb />
of the new county bridge at <lb />
Ferry, a point about fourteen <lb />
miles east of this town on the Tar <lb />
were submitted to the <lb />
commissioners at a special meeting <lb />
that board held yesterday for that <lb />
purpose. <lb />
A number of engineers and bridge <lb />
construction concerns submitted plans <lb />
but those offered by Mr. M. Jones, <lb />
of Washington. N. met with the <lb />
of the commissioners, and these <lb />
were accepted. This matter has been <lb />
before the board for several months, <lb />
the demand for the b having <lb />
come up form the people of Grimes- <lb />
land for better accommodations <lb />
tho river at that point than <lb />
are afforded by a ferry boat, which <lb />
been In use at that place for many <lb />
years. The plans of Mr. Jones, while <lb />
not altogether satisfying the demand <lb />
of the commissioners, were the belt <lb />
offered and are such that can <lb />
be to meet the requirements. <lb />
The commissioners will again <lb />
mediately advertise for bids for build- <lb />
the bridge, and all bids received <lb />
will opened at a special meeting <lb />
be held at on the <lb />
of November the Friday following <lb />
Thanksgiving Day. <lb />
The new bridge will be modern in <lb />
every respect. It will be equipped <lb />
with a steel draw, and will have wood <lb />
en approaches. The exact cost, or <lb />
even an approximate estimate of the <lb />
cost of the bridge, cannot be made at <lb />
this time, as there, are some changes <lb />
to be made that will so alter the <lb />
that this could not be done. <lb />

day at 1.1.22 cents, and has climbed <lb />
to 13.31 cents, a gain of II points. <lb />

as the number of bales brought in <lb />
