With an attendance that exceeded <lb />
on the first day, and which <lb />
has been growing since that time, the <lb />
graded school at Grimesland opened <lb />
last Monday for the session of 1913-14. <lb />
The attendance this year was far a- <lb />
that of last year for the opening <lb />
due, and the prospects for a good <lb />
are the best that have faced the <lb />
school In many years. <lb />
The school Is this year In charge <lb />
of lady principal, Misses <lb />
and Louise Dell AH of <lb />
the teachers are well prepared and es- <lb />
fitted for the work of teaching <lb />
young people committed to their <lb />
charge, and are working to make a <lb />
successful year for the school In <lb />
every respect. <lb />
The people of are very <lb />
proud of their school. present <lb />
quarters that are being used for the <lb />
children are entirely Inadequate, and <lb />
the people realize this and to <lb />
remedy It. The extra version of the <lb />
legislature will asked to grant <lb />
them to Issue bonds to <lb />
build a modern up-to-date six room <lb />
school building, the material to be of <lb />
brick. If permission Is granted Ly <lb />
the legislature for purpose, and It <lb />
not doubtful that the general as- <lb />
will grant the request of these <lb />
people, the election will be held as <lb />
soon as possible, and the bonds <lb />
Immediately. If prompt action is <lb />
taken, the people hope to have the <lb />
building ready for use by the session <lb />
of 1914-1915. If the new building Is <lb />
ready by that time, there will an <lb />
abundance of room for the <lb />
of students that will desire <lb />
admission, and It not unlikely that <lb />
additions will be made to the teaching <lb />
force at that time. <lb />

handsomely and completely. A lead- <lb />

which the Democratic party has <lb />

been no weakness or confusion or <lb />
drawing back, but a like <lb />

association with men who could do <lb />
is every reason to believe <lb />
that currency reform will be carried <lb />

When that Is done, this first session <lb />

The first and only big show to <lb />
come to Greenville this is th- <lb />
Young Buffalo Wild West, Vernon C. <lb />
Hippodrome and Col. Cum- <lb />
Far East which will show here <lb />
on Wednesday, September 17th. <lb />
This is an amusement enterprise <lb />
that is absolutely unique for it con- <lb />
of a wild west show, combined <lb />
with a regular circus, Vernon C. Sea <lb />
Hippodrome. This Is the first <lb />
year of the combination and together <lb />
with the Far East section the unit- <lb />
ed shows are carried In a train of <lb />
forty cars. The exhibition has a seat- <lb />
capacity of ten thousand, every <lb />
scat well protected from Inclement <lb />
weather proof canvas. <lb />
The Hippodrome section makes It <lb />
possible to present splendid scenic <lb />
spectacles of unusual grandeur and <lb />
beauty in an exhibition of this sort <lb />
Hundreds of cowboys and cow- <lb />
girls, scouts, plainsmen, and <lb />
together with performers <lb />
from Russia, Arabia, Japan and <lb />
of nearly every other <lb />
are presented on the program In <lb />
a series of sensational and daring <lb />
feats of strength and agility. Through- <lb />
out the twenty-two numbers the per- <lb />

new and said to be one of the most <lb />
laughable creations ever devised <lb />
Is another Import- <lb />
ed European novelty as also <lb />
Bounding a contrivance of <lb />
rural simplicity. A number of other <lb />
comedy turns are of equal merit. <lb />
The Wild section is headed <lb />
by a star of International renown, <lb />
Oakley, holder of the title of <lb />
champion rifle and wing shot of <lb />
and Young Buffalo himself. <lb />
Annie Oakley Is undoubtedly the best <lb />
shot In the world. At a recent <lb />
meet in Madison Square Garden, she <lb />
defended her title In moat <lb />
manner. <lb />
In tho Far East contingent will be <lb />
Been scores of Cossacks in marvelous <lb />
riding and shooting exhibitions. <lb />
will be groups of Arabs, <lb />
Japanese and <lb />
of other races. Al- <lb />
together Wild West, Hippodrome, <lb />
and Far East this year far exceed any <lb />
previous efforts of the owners <lb />
these shows. <lb />
The street parade, over a mile In <lb />
length, will the show grounds <lb />
promptly at o'clock the day of <lb />
the show. Tho doors will open at <lb />

commence an even hour later. <lb />

this source at other times. While <lb />
walking along the road he sometimes <lb />
would become very much frightened, <lb />
thinking that something was after <lb />
him, and that he was trying to free <lb />
himself from the clutch of sort <lb />

Leaving death and destruction <lb />
in its path and causing <lb />
of thousands of dollars worth of <lb />
damage, a storm said to be the <lb />
worst and most severe that has <lb />
ever visited this section broke <lb />
Eastern North Carolina short- <lb />
after midnight Tuesday, and <lb />
lasted until fur in the morning <lb />
on Wednesday. No estimate of <lb />
the damage wrought has as yet <lb />
been attempted, or at least any <lb />
that can be relieved upon us any <lb />
where near accurate. News from <lb />
every section out from Greenville <lb />
is that the storm is the worst <lb />
known, and that the damage <lb />
and toll of life is in <lb />
every respect. <lb />
Business in Greenville was to <lb />
tally paralyzed for the <lb />
part of the day Wednesday, and <lb />
but very few people attempted <lb />
to carry on their <lb />
circumstances that might be con <lb />
as normal. Workmen i- <lb />
every vocation and in every <lb />
of employment have been busily <lb />
engaged almost ever since day <lb />
break yesterday, or since storm <lb />
ceased, trying to repair the dam- <lb />
age as best they can. But, not- <lb />
withstanding all this, there <lb />
scarcely any sort of a <lb />
enterprise in this town or in <lb />
neighboring towns that has re- <lb />
its operations. <lb />
The knowledge of any <lb />
disturbance Tuesday <lb />
came shortly after midnight win i. <lb />
residents all over town were <lb />
awakened by the howling of th. <lb />
wind around the corner, and <lb />
rain that was being driven <lb />
on by the wind in its fury. This. <lb />
condition of the elements <lb />
kept up continuously, increasing <lb />
in its strength and never abating, <lb />
until after ten o'clock Wed lies <lb />
day morning. At time <lb />
rain and later totally, <lb />
mid the wind grew lesser <lb />
in its fury. It was not until <lb />
time, when people were able to <lb />
get out and walk over town. <lb />
anything of the extent of the <lb />
damage was learned. <lb />
Giant trees in the yards of oil <lb />
and on many of the street <lb />
of the town wore twisted from <lb />
their trunks or torn up by the <lb />
i roots. Limbs and sprigs from the <lb />
trees literally showered forth <lb />
through the and streets in <lb />
every direction were covered with <lb />
debris. Passages, both streets and <lb />
sidewalks nil over town wen <lb />
blocked by tho falling of tree- <lb />
across them, and and in <lb />
many instances, the passing of <lb />
was almost impossible <lb />
Dickinson avenue in the vicinity <lb />
of the Presbyterian church and <lb />
tho new store building <lb />
to the Furniture Com- <lb />
was covered by water more <lb />
than two feet deep during the <lb />
morning Wednesday and no pass <lb />
ling by foot was possible until <lb />
some outlet was found for the <lb />
water. <lb />
An unlimited number of stores <lb />
and business in the town, as <lb />
well as manufacturing plants, <lb />
were put out of business <lb />
day, and some of them has not <lb />
yet recovered. The local <lb />
phone exchange was entirely put <lb />
out of business for the greater <lb />
part of yesterday, and for <lb />
time there was not a single con- <lb />
made in town. All wires <lb />
were down in every section, and <lb />
a force of hands was immediate- <lb />
set to work making repairs <lb />
All of the wires of the Western <lb />
Union and the Postal Telegraph <lb />
companies were down, and com <lb />
inimical ion with the outside world <lb />
was absolutely impossible all day <lb />
yesterday. At a late hour today <lb />
neither the telegraph companies <lb />
nor the telephone exchange have <lb />
been able to get any long <lb />
connections. <lb />
All trains going and coming <lb />
were running late, though <lb />
on the Atlantic Line ran <lb />
behind only a few minutes. Their <lb />
trains, however, were operated <lb />
for tho most part without d- <lb />
patches. Norfolk Southern train <lb />
due here Wednesday morning at <lb />
o'clock did not run until <lb />
late in the afternoon, and the <lb />
train from Raleigh, d <lb />
here at a. m., did not reach <lb />
town until between two and <lb />
o'clock in the afternoon. No <lb />
trains on this road have been <lb />
to go beyond Chocowinity, <lb />
a temporary schedule has <lb />
put into operation to last for <lb />
several weeks until repairs can <lb />
be made on the eastern end of <lb />
the line. <lb />
The office of The Reflector was <lb />
so badly damaged that no paper <lb />
could be issued Wednesday. The <lb />
blew off the most of the tin <lb />
roof, allowing the ruin to come <lb />
through into the shop in the me- <lb />
department of the plant <lb />
It soaked the and went <lb />
through Into the press room, in <lb />
to the editorial office, the Western <lb />
Union, and the office of <lb />
Brother, doing damage <lb />
ever it The of <lb />
and the plant of The <lb />
company was damaged to the ex <lb />
lent of several hundreds of <lb />
though it was at first <lb />
to be above the thousand dollar <lb />
mark. When the employees of <lb />
the company arrived at the shoo <lb />
early in th. morning to begin <lb />
work, water was standing on th <lb />
about four inches deep. <lb />
The big newspaper press was <lb />
up, was also the <lb />
machine, and all of the Job press- <lb />
es. A window sash was blown <lb />
out on the north side of tho <lb />
building, the big mass falling on <lb />
the stones and type that <lb />
had required much time to set. <lb />
and forms which were to <lb />
go on the presses for job work <lb />
Smoke stacks several of the <lb />
manufacturing plants over <lb />
wore blown down, principally <lb />
those of the Greenville Cooperage <lb />
Company, The stack at the ice <lb />
factory was blown down, <lb />
other missiles which fell up <lb />
on the fireman, making a <lb />
large hole in his head, and in- <lb />
his shoulder to a <lb />
extent. So far as has been <lb />
learned, this is the only injury <lb />
that has resulted from the storm, <lb />
and no deaths at all have been <lb />
reported. <lb />
Otis L. carnival, now <lb />
filling an engagement of one week <lb />
in this town, was but one of the <lb />
heaviest losers in Greenville. Tin- <lb />
big ferris wheel is a complete <lb />
wreck, and the top on the merry <lb />
go-round was blown off. The <lb />
tents were badly damaged, and <lb />
the company otherwise greatly <lb />
inconvenienced. Notwithstanding <lb />
all this, however, the shows was <lb />
not altogether put out of com- <lb />
mission are still running, and <lb />
crowds are patronizing the amuse- <lb />
stands. <lb />
Though the electric light wires <lb />
were down all over town Wed- <lb />
morning at the time the <lb />
storm ceased its raging, the <lb />
steady, persistent work of Man- <lb />
ager Allen and his force made <lb />
it possible for the current to be <lb />
turned into nearly all of the <lb />
homes of the town last night, and <lb />
but very little inconvenience was <lb />
felt because of this. The men <lb />
through water to their <lb />
knees in some places in an effort <lb />
to repair the damage to <lb />
things in shape for giving <lb />
vice to the patrons of the com- <lb />
last night. The force did <lb />
not attempt to put the street <lb />
lights into commission, and these <lb />
were in total darkness all night. <lb />
Wires sputtering and burning <lb />
noticed in many places, <lb />
though nothing has been heard of <lb />
any one being injured because of <lb />
having come into contact with <lb />
live wire. <lb />
No little inconvenience has <lb />
been felt by the people of the <lb />
town because of the irregularity <lb />
of the handling of the mails, due <lb />
to the bad schedules of the train-. <lb />
Not, even the railroads have any <lb />
telegraph wires in operation, and <lb />
nothing can be learned as to <lb />
whether or not the trains will n <lb />
on time, and consequently put the <lb />
mails here on schedule time. <lb />
Damage In Washington <lb />
The town of Washington is <lb />
cut off completely from <lb />
with <lb />
save only as people cross the riv <lb />
in water craft, and that sort <lb />
of passing at this time is very <lb />
slow. What is known of the dam- <lb />
age that has been done has <lb />
almost entirely from people who <lb />
have come here from Washing- <lb />
ton. It is said that nil of tho <lb />
bridges, those of both the rail- <lb />
roads, arc washed away, that <lb />
no have tho town <lb />
since tho storm Water has <lb />
been the streets in nearly <lb />
every section of the town, and <lb />
tho total extent of the damage <lb />
has not learned at this time. <lb />

Mr SIX GALLONS OF <lb />
on the Marketing <lb />
Tobacco <lb />
It is not always safe to judge <lb />
tobacco market by the way tobacco <lb />
starts off at the opening Bale. For <lb />
the last several years the market has <lb />
opened pretty strong and gone grad- <lb />
higher throughout the main <lb />
selling season. This has resulted in <lb />
general satisfaction and baa been <lb />
much better for both farmer and <lb />
the buyer but some years back, for <lb />
Instance, 1902, the market started <lb />
strong and rapidly grew stronger <lb />
about the middle of September, <lb />
when it began to ease off and went <lb />
lower and lower until along toward <lb />
Sheriff Dudley in Exciting Chase <lb />
Early Sunday Morning <lb />
W ESCAPED <lb />
The Extended Over Several <lb />
i Blocks After a Record <lb />
Over the <lb />
Though failing to get his mac <lb />
S. I. Dudley nabbed the goods <lb />
the last of the season It was difficult after midnight Sunday morn- <lb />
to soil It at any price. I hope we when captured six gallons of <lb />
shall never experience tills condition <lb />
again. The best way to rear the <lb />
Is In the light of the past and <lb />
when we compare conditions in the <lb />
tobacco world then and now we will <lb />
find no such condition existing. <lb />
Eastern North Carolina had been <lb />
producing for several years prior to <lb />
from to million pounds of <lb />
tobacco from which cigarettes were <lb />
principally made. On account of stat <lb />
legislation against manufactured <lb />
chiefly the consumption had <lb />
fallen off until 1902 when only about <lb />
three and one half million cigarettes <lb />
were consumed In the United States. <lb />
Instead of a normal crop In 1902, <lb />
eastern North Carolina alone <lb />
ed over one hundred million pounds. <lb />
This in conjunction with the <lb />
ed consumption of our tobacco pro- <lb />
utter demoralization and the <lb />
bottom actually fell out of the mar- <lb />
for bright tobacco. There was on <lb />
hand at this time many millions of <lb />
pounds of bright tobacco for which <lb />
there was actually no market. Deal- <lb />
had their money all practically <lb />
tied up and manufacturers were car- <lb />
frying large surplus stocks. There <lb />
was but one remedy, and that to cut <lb />
down the production. The price at <lb />
which the market opened In 1903 and <lb />
continued for the most part through- <lb />
out the season, certainly had the de- <lb />
sired effect and the tobacco acreage <lb />
began to be cut until In a few years <lb />
the production had fallen to about <lb />
one half a normal crop. This soon <lb />
brought about reaction and prices to <lb />
the farmer began again to reach <lb />
point of some profit and now grad- <lb />
for the last year or two <lb />
acreage has been slightly increased <lb />
There is, however, at this time, no <lb />
surplus stock of tobacco on hand. The <lb />
1912 crop yielded only about one half <lb />
as many pounds as the 1902 crop. <lb />
There are nearly four times as many <lb />
cigarettes consumed now as In 1902. <lb />
and there is no prospect of a big yield <lb />
this year. On the contrary it will be <lb />
light weight Therefore, In the light <lb />
of these known facts the to- <lb />
should be high and pay the <lb />
growers a profit If present <lb />
don't give us high know <lb />
of no Influence that will. <lb />
I have always been a booster for <lb />
high prices for the farmers tobacco. <lb />
The manufacturers can pay the farm- <lb />
a profit and sell the manufactured <lb />
product so that the burden c high <lb />
prices, if it a burden, will be borne <lb />
by the consumer. If there is any <lb />
class of farmers in this world entitled <lb />
to liberal compensation for their la- <lb />
It is the tobacco farmers. There <lb />
i.-- no crop in this country that calls <lb />
for more constant persistent <lb />
more hard arduous work than <lb />
the tobacco crop. I know whereof I <lb />
speak. <lb />
L. <lb />
Filter is <lb />
Sufficient improvements have been <lb />
made at the water plant to furnish <lb />
enough water for the use of the cit- <lb />
of the town until better and <lb />
more permanent improvements can be <lb />
made. The proper authorities are <lb />
now working on the matter, and In <lb />
a few days material will be here, and <lb />
the plant will be competent of sup- <lb />
plying all the water that may <lb />
needed. <lb />
The British Medical Association <lb />
seriously considering the <lb />
of organizing as a labor union. <lb />
after a long chase across the <lb />
river bridge and around one of the <lb />
blocks in town. The chase occurred <lb />
just after the long session of court <lb />
adjourned, and while Sheriff Dudley <lb />
v. as on bis way home. <lb />
With another man In his automobile <lb />
with him, he had just crossed the <lb />
bridge on the north Bide. A buggy <lb />
passed them, and as it faded away in <lb />
the darkness the sheriff's partner told <lb />
him that It was a load of the <lb />
kind that is often handed out be- <lb />
hind closed doors. Taking <lb />
with luck, the officer turned his ma- <lb />
chine around on tho narrow part of <lb />
the dam a few feet off the bridge, and <lb />
started after his man. In the mean- <lb />
time, however, the buggy with the <lb />
liquor had been making good time <lb />
towards town and across the bridge. <lb />
The pulled his spark to the <lb />
limit, and came across the bridge as <lb />
though he were somewhat of a Bar <lb />
Oldfield and an old hand at the <lb />
wheel. <lb />
He struck the hill just to the south <lb />
the bridge, but his trusty benzine <lb />
wagon did not halt in her onward rush <lb />
The man In the buggy reached Second <lb />
street and turned to the left, the sheriff <lb />
close behind him. The chase lasted <lb />
one block more when the man <lb />
turned again toward the river, and <lb />
later back In the direction of Pitt <lb />
street. When he reached Pitt <lb />
hit turned into the road and <lb />
finally started around the block once <lb />
more. During the race, the sheriff <lb />
had to mend his machine for a few <lb />
moments two or three times, but never- <lb />
kept on after his man. <lb />
last lap of the struggle led the trusty <lb />
. up S. street to Washington <lb />
where the man in the buggy turned to- <lb />
ward the river. Just at this point the <lb />
case containing the fire water was <lb />
thrown Into the of the road <lb />
front of the sheriff's machine, <lb />
able In an effort to him Feeling <lb />
that the better course would be to pick <lb />
up the matter that was thrown over- <lb />
board, the officer and took on <lb />
what had been delivered to him, and <lb />
upon found that there as <lb />
much as six gallons in all, fifty pints <lb />
and twenty-four half pints. <lb />
The sheriff never did get his man, <lb />
but he has not given up tho chase. <lb />
He that he knows the man in <lb />
the buggy. The amount of liquor was <lb />
shipped to him at House station, and <lb />
upon inquiry at tho express office <lb />
there, Mr. Dudley saw that the amount <lb />
had been to tho man suspected, <lb />
and that he receipted for It. All that <lb />
remains Is for him to locate the guilty <lb />
party, and the officers are now at work <lb />
on some clue as to his whereabouts, <lb />
since he left these parts shortly after <lb />
his exciting chase with the sheriff. <lb />

to be Inconvenienced by tho poisonous <lb />
substance, and one or two member <lb />
were so seriously affected that It <lb />
for a while thought that they would <lb />
never survive the illness. <lb />
It appears that the cream was eat- <lb />
en by the family on Thursday night. <lb />
No evil effects were noticed before <lb />
Friday evening. At that time <lb />
Mrs. Carraway became effected, and <lb />
Dr. Ward, of was sum- <lb />

in the home the other members of tho <lb />
family were taken sick, and in <lb />
course of a very few hours <lb />
member of the household was taken <lb />
seriously ill. <lb />
Mr. stated this morning <lb />
that he was at Mr. home <lb />
yesterday, and that most of the <lb />
of the family were greatly <lb />
proved, and that Mrs. Carraway was <lb />
a great deal better than she was on <lb />
Friday night <lb />
Tho illness of the people was not <lb />
caused by the quantity of the cream <lb />
that they ate, but by some sort of <lb />
a poison that was in the cream. It <lb />
Is believed that the Impurities cam <lb />
from tho milk that was used, or at <lb />
least from the can that contained it. <lb />
The milk was the canned quality and <lb />
was thought to be all right when <lb />
put in the ice cream. <lb />

LIND IX<lb />
Consul's Office by Americans <lb />
Who Seek Information About <lb />
President's Warning. <lb />
MEXICO CITY, Aug. fail- <lb />
of John Lind, personal <lb />
of President Wilson to re- <lb />
turn to the from Cruz <lb />
is taken here to Indicate that Wash- <lb />
and Mexico are agreed on one <lb />
thing at least, namely, that there is <lb />
no good to be accomplished by the <lb />
trip. Mr. Lind is still in Vera Cruz <lb />
awaiting Instructions. The Mexican <lb />
government has made no further pro- <lb />
or concession to the United <lb />
States. <lb />
It Is considered here that the next <lb />
move must be made by Washington. <lb />
Officials hero today viewed the sit- <lb />
more brightly because of the <lb />
flotation of a twelve million peso loan, <lb />
which was taken by three local banks, <lb />
the National, the Bank of London, and <lb />
Mexico, and the do <lb />
of Americans From Mexico. <lb />
The exodus of Americans from tho <lb />
capital on account of President <lb />
son's warning to them to leave tin <lb />
country was greater today than on <lb />
Thursday, but not so great as had <lb />
been anticipated since so many Amer- <lb />
took the attitude that there was <lb />
no reason for then, to get out unless <lb />
Intervention was a certainty. Many <lb />
persons appeared Inclined to doubt <lb />
the Judgment of the administration In <lb />
its statement that fighting would <lb />
become sharper as a result of cutting <lb />
Off of tho supplies of ammunition <lb />
Those persons seemed to believe that <lb />
the Increased ammunition would re- <lb />
in less extensive operations. <lb />
Many Americans today sent private <lb />
to friends in Washington In <lb />
an effort to get more specific <lb />
concerning President Wilson's <lb />
warning. <lb />

folk trains through here <lb />
ere operated over the Coast Lin <lb />

Norfolk Southern. <lb />
An exchange has been made where- <lb />

there to Greenville, where it again <lb />
connects with the Coast Line, the run <lb />
from Chocowinity to Greenville being <lb />

Every means of cooperation ls be- <lb />

It will be remembered that the <lb />

Preparations and general over- <lb />
hauling of the graded school building <lb />
will started as soon as workmen <lb />
can be secured to make tho necessary <lb />
repairs. It is not proposed to make <lb />
any repairs necessitating the service <lb />
et a force of carpenters, but there is <lb />
much work that will have to be done <lb />
before the fall session Is opened the <lb />
latter part of this month. <lb />
Superintendent Taylor is busy every <lb />
day now getting everything in <lb />
for the opening, and is very op- <lb />
as to the bright prospects for <lb />
a largo number of students. Indeed <lb />
so great is the number of young <lb />
expected that it ls believed that <lb />
the will face a problem in <lb />
finding places for them to be taken <lb />
care of. Every space that can <lb />
be used will be pressed into service, <lb />
if any students are turned away <lb />
it will be because there is not room <lb />
la the building to accommodate those <lb />
who desire admission. <lb />
As soon as workmen can be <lb />
ed the problem of rearranging the <lb />
desks, and of setting them in different <lb />
positions will be tackled, this is to be <lb />
done for the purpose of providing <lb />
more room. The floors will be treated <lb />
to some sort of coating, and all of the <lb />
window glasses will be washed and <lb />
cleaned. The blackboards will be <lb />
cleaned and all of the rooms fitted up <lb />
with a good supply of chalk for use <lb />
after the classes have started. <lb />
The office will very likely be re- <lb />
arranged, and the books will have to <lb />
be dusted, and up for the use <lb />
of the students who will make calls <lb />
for them after they have got down to <lb />
the work of the session. <lb />
The outside grounds at the school <lb />
building present a much more <lb />
and attractive than <lb />
they did before the last session came <lb />
ti a close. During the past few <lb />
months Mr. Leslie White and band <lb />
tree surgeons have done extensive <lb />
work on the big trees in the grove, <lb />
and this treatment has added much to <lb />
the of the giant trees. <lb />
A Joint session of the association <lb />
cf postmasters of North Carolina and <lb />

sometime during the latter part of <lb />
the present month. It is expected <lb />
that several hundred of the stamp- <lb />

hand for the meeting and it is <lb />
ed that a great convention of these <lb />
men will result. <lb />
Speeches are to be made by <lb />
members of the association <lb />
from every part of the two states. <lb />

To the Editor of The <lb />
I regret exceedingly that the party <lb />
of gentlemen from the Department and <lb />
I could not reach Greenville today <lb />
to attend and conduct tho <lb />
Meeting. It was impossible to do so. <lb />
There were no trains out of Wash- <lb />

terrific storm forbade us driving by <lb />
vehicles. We had a fine meeting here <lb />
yesterday and all our party went to <lb />
the Norfolk Southern station at <lb />
this morning to take the train for <lb />
Greenville, but the train could not <lb />
cross the bridge over the river here <lb />
and shortly thereafter the bridge was <lb />

of Mr. J. C. last <lb />
morning. The man had passed <lb />
on his way to work <lb />
o'clock this morning, and stopped <lb />
in the store U get a Pepsi-Cols <lb />
which he had just finished drink- <lb />
in at the time he started behind <lb />
the counter, and fell dead. <lb />
When he began falling, out the manager's assertion that <lb />
reached out to catch <lb />
him and was, according to hit <lb />
own statement, severely shocked. <lb />
He ran out of the store into <lb />
street and called to Mr. Join <lb />
Brown, saying that a man was <lb />
dying in his store. At the time <lb />
Mr. Harris died several other <lb />
men were in the store, and so f <lb />
as is known, they were not shock- <lb />
ed by any sort of a current. <lb />
The man was turned over to <lb />
Coroner J. C. Green, who <lb />
mediately summoned a jury of <lb />
six men and held an inquest. The <lb />
examination of witnesses <lb />
ed practically all of the morning <lb />
and a short while after the noon <lb />
hour, and after every effort had <lb />
been exhausted to try to <lb />
the cause of the man's death, <lb />
a verdict was declaring <lb />
that he came to his end for <lb />
cause unknown to the jury. <lb />
Mr. Harris lived in Green- <lb />
ville for only about one month <lb />
lie came here from near Falk- <lb />
land where his people own and <lb />
operate a farm. He was, as slat- <lb />
ed above, a sawyer in the plan <lb />
of the Move Manufacturing Com- <lb />
and was looked upon as a <lb />
most trustworthy laborer. He <lb />
was an honest worker, and was <lb />
prompt an faithful in his deal <lb />
Mr. Harris was a young <lb />
man, being scarcely more <lb />
twenty years of age. When seen <lb />
last night about the carnival <lb />
grounds he seemed to be in A <lb />
very happy and cheerful mood <lb />
and remarked to a friend that he <lb />
had to go home go to bed <lb />
as he had to get up and go <lb />
work early this morning. <lb />
The body was turned over to <lb />
the Flanagan Undertaking Con <lb />
puny for preparation for burial <lb />
and was later turned over to the <lb />
people of the young man, who <lb />
had been notified of the sad ac- <lb />
There are various theories B <lb />
to how Mr. Harris came to <lb />
death. It is pointed out by men <lb />
who are in position t know <lb />
the only electric wire that <lb />
connected with the store <lb />
this morning charged with on- <lb />
volts, and that more than <lb />
this could not possibly have enter <lb />
his body, even had he came to <lb />
his cause. It <lb />
