EXONERATE ON <lb />
Juno <lb />
address by Dr. Archibald <lb />

this morning of the 111th an- <lb />

President Howard K. of <lb />
the Salem Academy and College, <lb />
Dr. Henderson to his large <lb />
audience. <lb />
Cultural and Literal y Prospects of <lb />
the Present South formed the ground <lb />
work of Mr. Henderson's masterful <lb />
address. <lb />
Dr. Henderson declared that liter- <lb />
and art have been shamefully <lb />
neglected tho south, saying th <lb />
almost all of the literature of the <lb />
southern states had been exhibited by <lb />
the women who by tenacity of <lb />
post organizing literary clubs have <lb />
lulled the false national tradition that <lb />
the south Is a place of hospitality, <lb />
beauty and fascination but of useless <lb />
women. <lb />
Tho southern writer, tho speaker <lb />
said, has never been appreciated in his <lb />

for this. Literature has <lb />
been thrust Into the background by j <lb />

word has been subjugated to the <lb />

Dr. stated that another <lb />
reason for the neglect of southern <lb />
was the absorption of the south- <lb />
mind with tho classics of Eng- <lb />
land and tho Continent. But the <lb />
declared Dr. Henderson, has <lb />
ready overcome its material <lb />
ties and today stands knocking at the <lb />

This action, it was authoritatively <lb />

who disapproved the decision an- <lb />
yesterday to tax meats ten <lb />

The vote to reconsider was taken <lb />
in tho sub committee on a motion <lb />
made by Senator Simmons <lb />
members of all the sub <lb />

he returned lo the from a con- <lb />

in this enlargement of the free list <lb />

Militant Suffragettes ire <lb />
Victorious In Royal <lb />
Palace <lb />
LONDON <lb />
just achieved big triumph <lb />
in the immediate of Queen <lb />
Mary herself. <lb />
The queen's chief dresser, Miss <lb />
Florence Selby, who has been with <lb />
her for years, has been a member <lb />
of the organization for <lb />
some and has been active as <lb />
recruiting sergeant for the Women's <lb />
Social and Union among the <lb />
upper servants of the royal palaces. <lb />
Queen Mary, according to the <lb />
World's information is intensely op- <lb />
posed to in every shape <lb />
and there has been much bickering <lb />
not only among the upper servants, <lb />
but the ladies in waiting as well, on <lb />
the question. <lb />
Recently Miss Selby and some other <lb />
in the palace took to <lb />
wearing the badges, of <lb />
which the queen had expressed dis- <lb />
approval, and matters readied a <lb />
max just before the queen's <lb />
for Berlin, when she issued an <lb />
order absolutely the wear- <lb />
of these badges by any of the <lb />
servants. <lb />
Miss Selby thereupon tendered her <lb />
resignation, declaring that she moat <lb />
have liberty to wear the badge or <lb />
ha would leave the queen's service <lb />
forthwith. It was impossible to dis- <lb />
with a chief dresser's service <lb />
just as the queen was going to Ber- <lb />
for a royal wedding. <lb />
was given Miss Selby to do as <lb />
she chose. <lb />
Miss Selby has not since then worn <lb />
the badge in the palace, but the royal <lb />
suffragettes are proud of the victory <lb />
for the principle they have won. <lb />
When the Countess of <lb />
one of the ladles In waiting, shovel <lb />
sympathy with the militants, though <lb />
rot one herself, the queen spoke so <lb />
sharply that the countess resigned. <lb />
Put it is far easier to fill the place of <lb />
a merely ornamental lady in waiting <lb />
than that of a chief dresser who has <lb />
acquired useful knowledge of the <lb />
queen's taste and foibles about her <lb />
and is thoroughly acquainted <lb />
with the royal wardrobe, both social <lb />
and mufti. <lb />
Owing to there being a number of <lb />
suffragettes among tho palace <lb />
the belief became Current that <lb />
the queen must he a sympathizer <lb />
too. this has annoyed her more than <lb />
anything else. <lb />

MIS USUAL BAD LUCK <lb />
BY JULIA <lb />
of course, I bad a lovely <lb />
Julia shook the evening dress <lb />
that she lifted from her trunk a little <lb />
vindictively. may observe, sis- <lb />
dear, that this creation doesn't <lb />
show any signs of hard wear, nor do <lb />
any of my other dancing frocks. If <lb />
you'll pardon the trite remark. have <lb />
returned home a sadder but a wiser <lb />
girl. have learned a few wholesome <lb />
truths, though I must admit that I <lb />
found them rather unpleasant at first. <lb />
Just give you a little <lb />
of my visit to the city and then It <lb />
won't be necessary for me to point a <lb />
moral. <lb />
back now, I feel like <lb />
at the pitiful egotism which led <lb />
me to half expect a phalanx of young <lb />
men at the train to meet me. Some- <lb />
how, I got the idea from the flattering <lb />
remarks of at least a half dozen of <lb />
those who honored our porch with <lb />
their presence last summer and <lb />
summers that my advent in the <lb />
city would be to them a source of the <lb />
keenest delight. Strangely enough, <lb />
therefore, my arrival created not even <lb />
a ripple of excitement. <lb />
It hadn't been for dear old Mrs. <lb />
Gray, there wouldn't have been one <lb />
friendly face to greet me as I stepped <lb />
off the train. Even was fuller of <lb />
her own affairs than of mine. She <lb />
said had some errands to do, and <lb />
asked me If I would mind going with <lb />
her to the shopping district. Of <lb />
course. I said I'd like to go with her, <lb />
but after we had passed a whole <lb />
pricing toweling and kitchen- <lb />
ware In the basements of three de- <lb />
stores, I made up my mind <lb />
that when I wished to see the shops <lb />
I'd try to go without Mrs. Gray. <lb />
was glad when we got to <lb />
apartment finally, to find that my <lb />
trunk had come, for I was anxious to <lb />
put on something pretty for the eve- <lb />
In case there should be callers. <lb />
I might just as well have taken my <lb />
ease In the negligee that Mrs. Gray <lb />
suggested, for our evening together <lb />
was uninterrupted. I began to think <lb />
that maybe some of the cards I had <lb />
sent to my summer <lb />
friends such a good name, dear, for <lb />
those careless young men who grace <lb />
our tennis court and beach <lb />
and decorate our porch during tho <lb />
heated gone astray. So I <lb />
decided to call up Ted Harris and tell <lb />
him I was In town. <lb />
mother answered the shone. <lb />
She said Ted had told her that I <lb />
coming and she thought be expected <lb />
to see me the next week. He was so <lb />
busy socially, she Informed me, that <lb />
he had very little time. Indeed, he <lb />
was leading a cotillion at the Fort- <lb />
nightly assembly that very evening. <lb />
thought Ted's mother rather <lb />
line, but the cotillion sounded good to <lb />
me, and I had a fascinating mental <lb />
picture of myself moving through the <lb />
mazes of that delightful dance two <lb />
weeks later. I remembered how Ted <lb />
was always descanting upon the per- <lb />
of the floor and the beautiful <lb />
music at his club, and I was sure he <lb />
would want me to dance there once <lb />
at least. I was awfully glad my eve- <lb />
gowns weren't In the least bit <lb />
country. <lb />
to relieve your curiosity at <lb />
once, let me tell you that Ted called <lb />
me up the next day and was most <lb />
cordial. He told me how glad he <lb />
would be to see me and how sorry he <lb />
was that he had every evening taken <lb />
for weeks In advance. That was just <lb />
his usual bad luck, he declared. But <lb />
he said I must surely have luncheon <lb />
with 1.1 in downtown. I replied that <lb />
would if I could, but that my time was <lb />
very full. He said I simply must <lb />
squeeze the luncheon In and he'd call <lb />
me up In a day or two and arrange a <lb />
date. <lb />
my dear, was the last of Ted. <lb />
I heard from no more and prob- <lb />
ably will not again until he appears <lb />
upon our veranda bright and smiling <lb />
some morning next summer, amiably <lb />
ready to enjoy our boat or our auto- <lb />
mobile or even the early apples In <lb />
our orchard. <lb />
had been In town a week <lb />
Clayton Rogers called me up and <lb />
he'd been trying to get around to see <lb />
me, but that be was rushed to pieces <lb />
with business. like to get up a <lb />
theater party for ho told me. I <lb />
gasped with suppressed surprise and <lb />
pleasure. he added, going <lb />
east I thanked him warmly. <lb />
Todd boys called one evening <lb />
just before left. talked of the <lb />
delights of our Country home and told <lb />
me how eagerly they were <lb />
their next summer's vacation. <lb />
They Invited sister, don't <lb />
walk around the lake <lb />
with them some cool day next Au- <lb />
gust Of course, accepted with <lb />
alacrity. <lb />
actually took me to a <lb />
lecture and Mr. Slater gave me a <lb />
shock by Inviting me to the <lb />
But he chose the evening of the <lb />
day I was leaving the city. How- <lb />
ard and Mr. weren't beard <lb />
from at all. <lb />
had a good time, though, for Mrs. <lb />
Is active In all sorts of Interest- <lb />
things, and I went to her club and <lb />
her church and helped a little with <lb />
her numerous charities and learned a <lb />
lot. But I think the most Important <lb />
lesson learned was my true value as <lb />

HER MIDNIGHT APPEAL OF THE <lb />
By C. N. JONAS. <lb />
was startled from his <lb />
Bleep by a sharp, Imperative rap on <lb />
the door of bis bedroom window. He <lb />
sprang up. donned dressing-gown and <lb />
slippers and hurried out at once with <lb />
a lighted candle. As he threw open <lb />
the door, the flickering glare quavered <lb />
grotesquely across a woman's tense, <lb />
pallid features. <lb />
The name broke from <lb />
him involuntarily; bis tone was <lb />
almost to harshness. <lb />
my <lb />
Intrusion at such an hour, but the <lb />
telephone will not work, and <lb />

looked at her and replied <lb />
go for the doctor Immediately. <lb />
Don't worry so much. Perhaps <lb />
aren't as bad as you <lb />
you, she breathed <lb />
earnestly. <lb />
Then she drew hood close, and <lb />
turning abruptly, disappeared Into the <lb />
darkness. <lb />
went back to Ills room <lb />
and exchanged his night clothes for a <lb />
riding-suit as quickly as possible. <lb />
Then he went out to the stables and <lb />
saddled fastest horse. <lb />
In less than five minutes he had <lb />
covered over a mile of the six that <lb />
must traversed. <lb />

A sudden wild thought flashed <lb />
through mind. What If <lb />

girl he had with the one <lb />
great of his life were to be <lb />
free once more All at once, be <lb />
conscious that his breath ceased; tin <lb />

When he bad elicited the doctor's <lb />
promise to follow Immediately, he <lb />
went back to his horse and flung him- <lb />
Belt wearily Into the saddle, almost <lb />
staggering under the whirl of <lb />
that held him In grip. He dared <lb />
not think, for to think meant to hope, <lb />
and hoping might mean almost any- <lb />
thing. <lb />
The return journey was made me- <lb />
To dazed brain <lb />
It might have been miles or It <lb />
might have been only one. <lb />
He rode through the darkness with <lb />

After all, it was only natural that <lb />

any words could have done what tho <lb />
outcome might be. In her eyes, there <lb />

and on and on, terrified by the <lb />
passion that swept through him. <lb />
When he had controlled himself, he <lb />
reversed his horse and down <lb />
to a steady, determined gait. In his <lb />
eyes a light that had never <lb />
them before. <lb />
Overhead, the sky with prodigal <lb />
splendor, seemed flung full of gold <lb />
by some giant hand. the pale <lb />
radiance covered everything like a <lb />
soft, yellow cloud. <lb />
An army of belated locusts broke <lb />

Secured at an Early Hour Monday <lb />
NEWSPAPER BURNED <lb />
Also Several Together With <lb />
Boss Hotel. Citizens Fought <lb />
Bard But Faculties Were <lb />
Not Sufficient <lb />
A fire that started about one o'clock <lb />
Monday morning destroyed a considers <lb />
portion of the business section <lb />
Ayden. It originated from sonic <lb />
cause unknown in a building belong- <lb />
to Miss Clyde Cox, on the East <lb />
side of Railroad street, and occupied <lb />
by Mr. Jackson as a pressing <lb />
club and tailoring establishment. Tho <lb />
office of Dr. H. Johnson was In the <lb />
same building. <lb />
From this building the Are spread <lb />
to the Ross Hotel, owned by Mr. J. <lb />
S. Ross and occupied by Mr. E. L. <lb />
Brown. It being Sunday night <lb />
veer only a few guests In the hotel, <lb />
and while these and Mr. Brown's <lb />
family got out safely, some had <lb />
narrow escapes and saved only the <lb />
night clothes they had on. <lb />
From the hotel tho fire spread <lb />
the building occupied by the Free Will <lb />
Baptist Publishing Company and <lb />
Ayden Advance, wiping out the entire <lb />
plant. The company bad only re- <lb />
installed a new press and <lb />
equipment, and their loss Is the most <lb />
serious In the fire. <lb />
Next to the printing plant was a <lb />
trick office owned by Mr. L. L. <lb />
and occupied by Dr. M. T. <lb />
While this office was destroy- <lb />
ed. It being brick with metal roof <lb />
aided in saving the residence of Mr <lb />
Just a few feet distant. The <lb />
residence caught several times and <lb />
once was almost given up for lost, but <lb />
by renewed energy and hard work <lb />
the Are fighters it was saved. <lb />
Ayden has no Arc department, but <lb />
bucket brigades of citizens farmed <lb />
and they did heroic work, <lb />
standing the odds against them. AH <lb />
the buildings destroyed, with the ex- <lb />
of the brick office, were frame <lb />
structures and burned like tinder- <lb />
boxes. So rapid was the spread <lb />
the fire in such a frame range, that <lb />
they were all In ashes Inside an hour. <lb />
We could not get an accurate list <lb />
of the Individual losses and <lb />
The loss Is not less than <lb />
and all of the parties, with <lb />
the exception of Mr. Brown, prop- <lb />
of the hotel, bad some <lb />
Ayden is a town with the pluck <lb />
not to be held back by a fire, and we <lb />
expect it will not be long before sub- <lb />
brick buildings will take the <lb />
place of the frame structures destroy- <lb />
ed. <lb />

A farmer told The Reflector man <lb />

At the present time there seems to <lb />
be considerable excitement over the <lb />
which has been <lb />
allotted to North Carolina to aid In <lb />
building roads in certain sections of <lb />
the state. There have been a great <lb />
many applications made to the gov- <lb />
and reasons given why a certain <lb />
part of this should be spent <lb />
the construction a road in this <lb />
or that part of the state. Many who <lb />
have made these applications are not <lb />
at all familiar with the conditions <lb />
placed about the allotment of this <lb />
money. Tho conditions are as fol- <lb />
The local of the <lb />
state has to furnish double the amount <lb />
of money supplied by the government. <lb />
The money appropriated by tho <lb />
local is generally best <lb />
deposited in the hands of a local <lb />
tee to be disbursed on the order of <lb />
tho duly qualified representative of <lb />
tho U. S. office of public roads. It <lb />
probably would be convenient and sat <lb />
to make a national bank the <lb />
trustee. This bank may be in the <lb />
county in which the road is to be <lb />
built. <lb />
The engineering work Is to be <lb />
done by the U. S. office of public <lb />
roads, and one of their engineers <lb />
would be In immediate charge of it. <lb />
The laborers are only <lb />
ed to work eight hours a day on such <lb />
a road. <lb />
No convicts will be permitted <lb />
to be worked on the road. <lb />
The first three conditions are all <lb />
right and no one should take <lb />
to them. The last, two, however, <lb />
may affect decidedly tho road work <lb />
in the county. In the first place, <lb />
If is allotted to a certain <lb />
or township. It has to provide <lb />
making a total of to be <lb />
spent on that particular road. The <lb />
laborers working on this road who <lb />
will be paid out of this are <lb />
only permitted to work eight hours <lb />
per day; while the regular labor- <lb />
In the county or state work ten <lb />
hours per day. Therefore, we lose <lb />
one-fifth of the time of each laborer. <lb />
In recommending the as paid <lb />
for labor, would lose one-fifth of <lb />
it, or so that Instead of get- <lb />
ting we are. In reality, only <lb />
getting <lb />
The last condition might not be of <lb />
any serious moment in some localities, <lb />
but In others it may be found that the <lb />
convict force of the county or town- <lb />
ship can be used to the very best ad- <lb />
vantage on this particular road; and <lb />
yet, under these conditions, they can- <lb />
not be used. <lb />
For this reason the <lb />
ed to North Carolina for ail in road <lb />
building is not going to do as much <lb />
work as was at first expected; and, <lb />
while the county or township will <lb />
gain a certain amount from this <lb />
it will not be its full face <lb />
value. <lb />

In tho courts of Chester county, has <lb />
application for admission to the <lb />

far denied the privilege because he <lb />

The election will soon be <lb />
a thing of past, but some things <lb />
connected with it will be remember- <lb />
ed for sometime to come. We are <lb />
anxious to see what will <lb />
do for we have often thought of Con- <lb />
as the land of Goshen; but <lb />
we know cannot have free range <lb />
and good roads, too. If <lb />
and Greenville townships get good <lb />
roads would have to do <lb />
likewise or the tide would turn. <lb />
Let the fence go back and you will <lb />
have a tax as an endless chain. It <lb />
would build a road across your town- <lb />
ship twice. If you put the old fence <lb />
back, put a fence around Ayden and <lb />
and then pay the mail <lb />
carrier to open all the gates, when <lb />
will you get through paying tax <lb />
Under these conditions ask for a <lb />
road bond an will <lb />
go down there and take your big tax <lb />
and put you out of business, as he <lb />
tried to do Farmville. Farmville said <lb />
thee hence, and he did <lb />
so. X. Y. Z. <lb />

The accident occurred at about <lb />

They had motored to Washing- <lb />

up Main like a rocket. Tho <lb />
machine from side to side <lb />
as the Joy riders tore on their way. <lb />
Everyone who happened to on <lb />
Main street at the time, remarked <lb />
upon the reckless manner in which it <lb />
was driven. <lb />
Exactly how tho accident happen- <lb />
ed, is not known. Evidently Flem- <lb />
must have lost control of the <lb />
wheel, the car shot Into a ditch <lb />
alongside of the road, turned com- <lb />
over and pinned three of <lb />
occupants underneath it. <lb />
A party of men, who were <lb />
at work near by ran to the scene of <lb />
the accident and assisted the party <lb />
In getting out from under the heavy <lb />
machine. It was found that no one <lb />
had been seriously injured. All were <lb />
scratched up and bruised consider- <lb />
ably and their torn, but out- <lb />
and two side of that, the party were fortunate <lb />
In escaping unscathed. <lb />
They continued on to Greenville, <lb />
leaving the at the roadside, where <lb />
Mr. Bell of this city had it righted <lb />
and repaired. <lb />
The escape that the party had is <lb />
considered miraculous. How <lb />

bruised and shaken up. <lb />

The occupants of the tent had seen <lb />
tho cloud approaching and had lower- <lb />

the guy ropes enough to stand any <lb />
ordinary gale. Indeed, the ropes <lb />
held as It was. but the middle section <lb />
c f the tent, which was about years <lb />
old, tore and when the wind got <lb />
It, ripped clear apart, letting in a <lb />
deluge of water. <lb />
There was an instant stampede for <lb />
the entrances, and shouts and screams <lb />
and rent the air as the great <lb />
tent slowly careened, the audience <lb />
spilling out of every crevice. The <lb />
paused momentarily in Its down- <lb />
ward course, and most of those inside <lb />
reached the open air. then suddenly <lb />
every light in the place went out and <lb />
the tent came to earth With a swoop, <lb />
burying the least nimble of the con- <lb />
in its folds. It <lb />
roved fortunate then that tho <lb />
wires had pulled apart before the <lb />
struck tho earth, else the mix- <lb />

to those who had been unable to <lb />

If you like your guests, your <lb />

put up screens. the doors and <lb />

easily get rid of the occasional In- <lb />

In tho country a man's files are <lb />

each householder is largely <lb />

a town is usually Just about us dead <lb />

health. <lb />
Tho whole thing narrows down, <lb />
therefore, so that you can Judge a <lb />

A Chain of Taxes <lb />
Editor <lb />
I have enjoyed the different <lb />
written by Y. on stock <lb />
law and Can't help but believe he is <lb />
on side of progress. I have Just <lb />
read his last article in which he re- <lb />
to voting the fence back <lb />
a chain of taxes. <lb />
I had not heard of this kind of <lb />
taxes, so I began to think what he <lb />
meant by chain of taxes and this <lb />
answer came to <lb />
If it cost twenty thousand dollars <lb />
to put the fence back and pay the <lb />
suits and right of way, as many per- <lb />
sons think, the interest on the <lb />
thousand would be twelve <lb />
at the end of the first year. If <lb />
we value the of this money like <lb />
we value the money we use to buy <lb />
a home it would double itself In about <lb />
twelve years. And so this chain of <lb />
taxes would be forty thousand <lb />
at the end of twelve years, and <lb />
in twelve years it would be <lb />
double again and that would <lb />
eighty thousand dollars and at the <lb />
end of thirty-six years it would be one <lb />
hundred and sixty thousand dollars, <lb />
that would be saved or lost to the <lb />
generation of thirty-six years to <lb />
come. <lb />
Some young men have learned this <lb />
rule and when they think about <lb />
spending five cents for a cigar or <lb />
cold drink, they say to themselves <lb />
am going to save that five cents <lb />
and put It on interest and In thirty- <lb />
six years I will have forty cents. <lb />
This rule well kept Is the way some <lb />
young men grow wealthy in old age. <lb />
you only a few days to <lb />
decide this question, whether or not <lb />
to put the fence hack. Are you going <lb />
vote for or against progress Are <lb />
you going to vote for or against this <lb />
and the rising generation If you <lb />
can't vote to save money for this and <lb />
the coming generation don't vole at <lb />
Tell your neighbor about this. <lb />
A. FARMER <lb />
Hartley's pen raced furiously over <lb />
the paper. Then with resolute fingers <lb />

it aside to be posted. <lb />
Afterwards, he arose, took one or <lb />
two impatient turns up and down the <lb />
room; then came back and sat down <lb />
again, thinking deeply. Some abrupt <lb />
whim prompted him to reopen the en- <lb />
and read it over before sending <lb />

Hartley went over the with <lb />
scorching checks. Surely he bad not <lb />
been so great a fool to heap insults <lb />
like these upon a possibly Innocent <lb />
woman <lb />
With a gesture of disgust he tore <lb />
tho letter into and flung It into <lb />
the fire. Next morning ho bought a <lb />
ticket for tho <lb />
Elsie Hartley was in one of her <lb />
moods when the surrey drove up <lb />
and left her husband standing on the <lb />

A minute before she had believed <lb />
him hundreds of miles away, tugging <lb />
at the pile of briefs he bad declared <lb />
It Impossible for to leave under a <lb />
fortnight. <lb />
Then they both laughed, and after- <lb />
wards he went up to her suite to brush <lb />
up a little, as it was almost the hour <lb />
for dinner. <lb />
His wife's noncommittal attitude <lb />
had left him more in the dark than <lb />
ever. Two days ago he would have <lb />
sworn that was guilty; today he <lb />
would have taken an oath of Just the <lb />
reverse. Yet there were the damning <lb />
bits of evidence that no amount of <lb />

The sudden appearance of a waiter <lb />
announcing dinner Interrupted his <lb />
reverie. He put aside all personal re- <lb />
and changed his clothes with <lb />
dispatch. A few moments later he had <lb />
started toward the door. On the way <lb />
out his eyes fell by accident upon a <lb />
crumpled sheet of closely written note <lb />
paper. The writing was in his wife's <lb />
hand, unmistakably. He read with a <lb />
suffocating <lb />
There was a time <lb />
when I believed that I had <lb />
given my heart to you, and that <lb />
I should never be able to live happily <lb />
away from you. But, thank heaven, <lb />
knowledge of my true feelings has <lb />
come to me before it was too lute. I <lb />
am sending this to you to stop you in <lb />
New York. Do not come here, for If <lb />
you do I shall decline to <lb />
you. My husband is an honest <lb />
and honorable man, and In every way <lb />
is far above the average. Should he <lb />
ever learn of my meanness, I fear that <lb />
It would the end of everything for <lb />
me. You see it has come to this that <lb />
I fully realize now how deep and <lb />
is the feeling I have always had <lb />
for him, notwithstanding this miser- <lb />
able affair between us. It was, I as- <lb />
sure you, entirely brought about by a <lb />
fancy on my part that he was begin- <lb />
to neglect me. I am repenting <lb />
most keenly this ridiculous folly, and <lb />
with the help of God I mean to be for- <lb />
ever true and honorable. Don't try to <lb />
dissuade me. for I was never <lb />
determined In my <lb />
When Hartley looked up from the <lb />
letter his eyes were blurred and <lb />
Her only had been her <lb />
weakness, and for that ho himself was <lb />
doubtless In part responsible. <lb />
He walked over to the mantel and <lb />
deliberately struck a match, applying <lb />
the flame to the crumpled sheet of <lb />
paper. When It had to black <lb />
bits over the hearth ho turned. For <lb />
reason he had not heard the <lb />
door open softly, and the blood flamed <lb />
over his face as ho encountered bis <lb />
wife's eyes fixed full upon him. <lb />
An awkward silence fell between <lb />
them. Hartley passed an arm about <lb />
her and bent swiftly to kiss <lb />
her. <lb />
Had she seen him destroy the letter, <lb />
and did she know that he had read <lb />
and knew it all Ho would have <lb />
the answer to that question, but the <lb />
warm touch of tho lips she lifted to <lb />
his caress solved all future problems <lb />
for them both. <lb />

HEIGHT OF FORK OF TREES PETRIFIED FALLS IN ALGERIA <lb />
It Never Grows Higher Than the Point <lb />
Where First Noted, Declares <lb />
an Authority. <lb />
Some people through car. less ob- <lb />

forest tree will gradually higher <lb />
from the ground. If they would in <lb />
It would be found that the <lb />
forks and of fruit trees at at <lb />
exactly the same point where they <lb />
were when first noted. <lb />
The state forester in Inspecting lo- <lb />
and catalpa groves throughout the <lb />
state, says the Indiana Farmer, has <lb />
found owners who have not removed <lb />
one part of the fork of those trees <lb />
that have formed forks below the fence <lb />
post length, believing that in years <lb />
the fork would grow up and a fence <lb />
post could be cut below the fork. This <lb />
erroneous belief is the cause of much <lb />
of the delay and neglect of pruning in <lb />
early life of street and roadside trees- <lb />
It should be remembered that the <lb />
j base of a fork or a branch of a tree <lb />
will always remain at the same dis- <lb />
I above the ground. The side <lb />
branches of some trees, such as the <lb />
elm. usually continue to grow upward, <lb />
while those of other trees, such as <lb />
the maples, incline upward when <lb />
young and as the tree grows older <lb />
tho weight of the branches gradually <lb />
brings It to the horizontal. The latter <lb />
often makes the removal of large <lb />
branches necessary, which not only <lb />
spoils tho symmetry of the tree, but <lb />
usually starts decay, which soon kills <lb />
the tree. <lb />
No street or roadside tree should be <lb />
permitted to form a fork below ten <lb />
feet and all of the side branches to the <lb />
same height should be removed so that <lb />
they will the crop less. <lb />
If this Is done the tree in time will <lb />
grow a saw log below the branches. <lb />

said Senator Simmons, <lb />
the president's alleged con- <lb />
with certain amendments rec <lb />
o by certain subcommittees <lb />
of finance committee that is mis- <lb />
leading and in order that <lb />
the public understand the real <lb />
facts, I wish to say that while the <lb />
president has expressed to the <lb />
of finance committee as be <lb />
l reported to have expressed to <lb />
and means committee when the <lb />
Mil was In the house, strong views <lb />
and convictions with respect to <lb />
on the free list both wool and <lb />
sugar, he has not, so far as I know, <lb />
expressed any views as to the other <lb />
provisions of the bill except when bis <lb />
opinion has been asked, and has not <lb />
In any way attempted to dictate to the <lb />
committee. <lb />
view current in the <lb />
to the effect a subcommittee <lb />
of the finance committee had decided <lb />
to recommend that wheat and live <lb />
stock well as meat and flour should <lb />
go on the free list at the Instance <lb />
and dictation of the president not <lb />
correct. far as I know the <lb />
dent has no opinion with <lb />
respect to this matter except that <lb />
when told of the probable of <lb />
the subcommittee putting these <lb />
in the free list In response to <lb />
an Inquiry as to his opinion upon the <lb />
be approval. <lb />
Is It true that <lb />
tee adopted the countervailing proviso <lb />
with respect to wheat and flour at <lb />
the president's dictation much <lb />
discussion, as has been represented. <lb />
On contrary, be has expressed no <lb />
views so far I know on this sub- <lb />
and the subcommittee's action <lb />
with reference to the countervailing <lb />
on these articles was taken at <lb />
the same time It was decided to <lb />
mend that they be put on the free <lb />

Saves life of Girl When <lb />
Attacked by <lb />
Rattler <lb />
ROGERS, Ark., June <lb />
Graham, of Monte, Ne., here related <lb />
a remarkable escape of a girl from <lb />
being bitten by a large rattlesnake. <lb />
The girl stumbled over a stone <lb />
and fell headlong. Her face struck <lb />
only a short distance from rat- <lb />
with its mouth wide open, ready <lb />
to sink Its deadly fangs into her <lb />
cheeks. <lb />
The young woman was chewing <lb />
gum and her fall caused it to fall <lb />
out of her mouth, striking the snake <lb />
squarely In the mouth. The snake <lb />
quickly closed down on it and while <lb />
the reptile was In this position the <lb />
girl sprang to her feet and killed It. <lb />
The snake had sixteen rattles and <lb />
a button. A visitor at Ne <lb />
gave the girl for the rattles and <lb />
a doctor paid for the carcass. <lb />

la not mentioned, probably through <lb />

THE NATIONAL BANK <lb />
PATS SECOND DIVIDEND <lb />
In April the National Bank of <lb />
Greenville paid its stockholders a <lb />
semi-annual dividend of i per cent, <lb />
making per cent for the fiscal year. <lb />
This was Just before the consolidation <lb />
of that bank with the Bank Green- <lb />
ville. After the consolidation of the <lb />
two banks there was a surplus <lb />
with charged to <lb />
and fixtures. In the last few <lb />
days a further dividend of 1-2 per <lb />
cent has been paid out to the <lb />
to the National Bank stockholders. <lb />
This still leaves a good surplus and <lb />
puts the old and new stockholders, <lb />
the latter being those coming In from <lb />
the former Bank of Greenville, on <lb />
the same footing as to value of stock. <lb />
It Is also fitting to say that In the <lb />

which time Mr. F. J. Forbes has been <lb />
cashier of the National Bank, that <lb />
the earnings of the bank have reach- <lb />
