WILSON INDUCTED <lb />
INTO HIGH OFFICE <lb />
Inauguration of Twenty-Seventh <lb />
President Is Witnessed by <lb />
Great Crowds. <lb />
MARSHALL SWORN IN FIRST <lb />
Ceremony In Senate Chamber <lb />
Followed by More Impressive <lb />
Affair on Portico of <lb />
the Capitol. <lb />
By GEORGE CLINTON. <lb />
Washington, March the pres- <lb />
of h vast throng of his fellow <lb />
sens. Woodrow Wilson today Blood in <lb />
front of the Mil portico of the <lb />
and took the of president of the <lb />
United Slates. Thomas K. Marshall <lb />
already had been sworn In as <lb />
president, and with the completion of <lb />
the ceremony ship of stale was <lb />
manned by the Democratic party, <lb />
which had been ashore for sixteen <lb />
years. <lb />
As the new chief executive of the <lb />
nation stood with bared head, <lb />
ward Douglass While, chief Justice of <lb />
the Supreme court, held before him <lb />
the Bible always used In tho ear <lb />
Mr. Wilson placed his <lb />
the book and in a voice strong <lb />
though somewhat affected by emotion, <lb />
aw-ore to support the Constitution and <lb />
the laws of the country and to perform <lb />
the duties of his high office to the best <lb />
of bis ability. <lb />
Thomas Kiley Marshall swore <lb />
to the and to the <lb />
people in the senate chamber, where <lb />
for four years It will his duty to <lb />
preside over the deliberations of <lb />
members of the upper house of con <lb />
Severely Simple Ceremonies. <lb />
Both of the ceremonies proper were <lb />
conducted in a severely simple <lb />
most impressive manner. The <lb />
of scene of the <lb />
dent's induction Into office, however, <lb />
were not simple, for It was an out <lb />
of-door event and the great gathering <lb />
of military, naval and uniformed <lb />
organizations gave much more than a <lb />
touch of splendor to the scene. <lb />
In the senate chamber, where the <lb />
the oath was taken by the man now <lb />
vice-president of tho United States <lb />
there were gathered about <lb />
people, all that the upper will <lb />
without the risk of danger <lb />
because of the rush and press of the <lb />
multitudes. It is probable that no- <lb />
where In the United States at <lb />
any time are there gathered an equal <lb />
number of men and women whose <lb />
names are so widely known. The <lb />
gathering In the senate chamber and <lb />
later on the east portico of the <lb />
was composed largely of those <lb />
prominent for their services In Amer- <lb />
and In part of foreigners who <lb />
have secured places for their names <lb />
In the current history of tho world's <lb />
doings. <lb />
The arrangements of the ceremonies <lb />
for the inauguration of Woodrow <lb />
on and Thomas Marshall were <lb />
made by the committee on <lb />
of The <lb />
I M the Hour the <lb />
were many former members of <lb />
the senate who, because of the fact <lb />
that they once held membership In <lb />
that body, were given the privileges <lb />
of the floor. After the hall was tilled <lb />
ard all the minor officials of govern- <lb />
and those privileged to witness <lb />
the ceremonies were sealed. William <lb />
Taft and Woodrow Wilson, <lb />
d by the and the <lb />
committee of arrangements, entered <lb />
the senate chamber. They were fol- <lb />
lowed by Vice-President- <lb />
elect Thomas R. Marshall, leaning <lb />
on the arm of the president pro <lb />
of the senate who, after the <lb />
seating of the incoming vice-president, <lb />
took his place as presiding officer of <lb />
the senate and of the day's proceed- <lb />
The president and the president- <lb />
elect sat In the first row of seats <lb />
rt In front and almost under the <lb />
desk of the presiding officer. In the <lb />
same row, but to their left, were the <lb />
and two former <lb />
of the United States. <lb />
P. Morton of New York and Ad- <lb />
A. Stevenson of Illinois. <lb />
When distinguished company en- <lb />

oath of office was Immediately <lb />

After the prayer <lb />

to all the newly senators, and j <lb />
therewith the senate of the United <lb />
States passed for the firs; time In <lb />
years Into the control of the Demo <lb />
party. <lb />
Procession to the Platform. <lb />
Immediately after <lb />
monies a procession was formed to <lb />
march to the platform of the east <lb />
of the capitol, where Woodrow <lb />
Wilson was to take the oath. The pro- <lb />
cession included the president and the <lb />
president-elect, members of the <lb />
court, both houses of congress, <lb />
division. <lb />
The third division of the parade was <lb />
composed of Grand Army of the Re- <lb />
public veterans, members of toe Union <lb />
I Veteran league and of the <lb />
war Gen. James B. <lb />
Stuart of Chicago, a veteran of both <lb />
the Civil and the Spanish wars, was <lb />
In command <lb />
Thousands of Civilians. <lb />
Robert N. Harper, chief marshal of <lb />
the civic forces, commanded the fourth <lb />
division. Under his charge were <lb />
organizations from all parts of <lb />
the country, among them being Tam- <lb />
many, represented by of its <lb />
braves. Democratic clubs from <lb />
Chicago. Philadelphia, <lb />
, more and other cities. <lb />
They put the American Indians Into <lb />
the civilian division. The fact that <lb />
they vi re in war paint and feathers <lb />
helped out in and did <lb />
nothing to disturb the peace. <lb />
of tho United Hunt Clubs of <lb />
; America rode In this division. Their <lb />
pink coals and their high hats <lb />
were not thought to Jar <lb />
from Its <lb />
seat. Pink were worn on the <lb />
hunting held In Jefferson's day and In <lb />
Jefferson's state. <lb />
There were Princeton <lb />
In the civic section of the <lb />
Many of them wore orange end black <lb />
sweaters and they were somewhat <lb />
noisy though perfectly proper. Stu- <lb />
dents from seventeen other colleges <lb />
and universities were among the <lb />
marchers. <lb />
Cheering Is Continuous. <lb />
All along Pennsylvania avenue, from <lb />
the capitol to a point four block be- <lb />
the White House, the spectators <lb />
were mailed in lines ten deep. The <lb />
cheering was constant and Woodrow <lb />
Wilson cannot complain that the <lb />
monies attending ins Induction Into <lb />
office were not accompanied by <lb />
heartfelt acclaim of the <lb />
over whom he Is to rule for at <lb />
four am, <lb />
Every window in every building on <lb />
Pennsylvania avenue which is not <lb />
tor office purposes was rented <lb />
weeks ago for a good round of <lb />
money. Every room Overlooking the <lb />
marching was taken by as <lb />
many spectators as And a <lb />

buildings were covered With <lb />
willing to stand for hours In a March <lb />

waiting they had seen a <lb />

Ride to the Capitol. <lb />
Taft and President-elect <lb />
rode together from the White <lb />

two members of the <lb />
committee of arrangements. The vice- <lb />
president-elect also rode from the <lb />
White House to the capitol and in the <lb />
