Anyhow, Milan came in as hard as I e <lb/>
could come, and he can come some. <lb/>
He scooped the ball by a wonderful <lb/>
running itch, right off his shoe <lb/>
bin us he i aught it he lost ins <lb/>
and started to fall. Instead of <lb/>
trying to catch himself he simply <lb/>
duck.-d head, rolled a <lb/>

he thinking. It would <lb/>
look to one I Milan r <lb/>
would have thrown home, on the Idea <lb/>
that the runner on would hold <lb/>
the bag and start alter the catch, W <lb/>
snap the ball to second and try to <lb/>
double up the runner there before ho <lb/>
could get back. He didn't do either. <lb/>
He cut loose the bill as hard as he <lb/>
could lo third base. It happened that <lb/>
Milan knew Cobb's quickness and <lb/>
that would see the catch and <lb/>
gel back to before he could be <lb/>
doubled. He figured the other runner <lb/>
would start home before the ball was <lb/>
caught, calculating H couldn't <lb/>
caught. And that Is exactly what <lb/>
happened. The runner was off third <lb/>
and going home. Cobb was sliding <lb/>
back to second, and Milan made tho <lb/>
double play the only way it could <lb/>
have been made. And I'm certain <lb/>
he didn't time to look at third <lb/>
before he threw, but figured It out In <lb/>
his head taming a somersault <lb/>
and catching the ball. <lb/>

turn the play and the game upside <lb/>
down Well, I did, and it resulted in <lb/>
the greatest play I ever saw. The <lb/>
play was made so quickly and so rap- <lb/>
Idly was It thought out that the two <lb/>
men who made it almost thought me <lb/>

when I finished up the play for them. <lb/>
I was playing third base then, Card- <lb/>

pitching well. We were all the time <lb/>

GREATEST <lb/>
PLAY I <lb/>
TOLD TO <lb/>
Hush <lb/>
By CHARLES WAGNER. <lb/>
A fellow is inclined to think that <lb/>
the greatest play he ever saw Is the <lb/>
one that wins the game. I know that <lb/>
the play always seems greatest <lb/>
me Is the twenty-seventh out for <lb/>
the other team, no matter whether It <lb/>
I Is a pop fly or a great stop or catch, <lb/>
especially If we are one run ahead and <lb/>
there are two on bases. <lb/>
But the greatest play over saw, <lb/>
and the one I remember most vividly, <lb/>
wasn't a stop or catch or throw, but a <lb/>
play that Eddie Collins made on the <lb/>
bases last season. He made It at the <lb/>
right time, won the game for us and <lb/>
the bes,. exhibition of timing and <lb/>
running I ever saw. <lb/>
At the time he made the play the <lb/>
pennant race wasn't over by a whole <lb/>
lot. We were ahead, but not enough <lb/>
to feel comfortable. Both Detroit and <lb/>
Boston were going well, and as you <lb/>
know It doesn't take much of a change <lb/>
in the luck to turn things <lb/>
A few bad breaks of luck and some <lb/>
team you've been thinking out of It <lb/>
comes along, and there you are. forced <lb/>
to fight for life again. There is so <lb/>
much luck In the game that no team <lb/>
can stop hustling for a minute v <lb/>
It is won. <lb/>
We were playing Boston, and ab <lb/>

Utility Player Washington Club, Who <lb/>

The greatest play that I recall, and <lb/>
the one I think was the greatest I <lb/>
ever saw. was made this season In an <lb/>
extra Inning game between the Chi- <lb/>
and Washington clubs. Not only <lb/>
that, but It was the greatest game of <lb/>
ball I ever six plays In It I <lb/>
that might any one be called the <lb/>
greatest, according to the way a man <lb/>
looks at It. First, caught a <lb/>
home run while running straight out <lb/>
nearly to the center Held fence; then <lb/>
Walker caught a fly off one ear while <lb/>
turning a back somersault; Lord made <lb/>
two great one-handed stops on the <lb/>
line back of third, and grab- <lb/>
bed two line drives and started double <lb/>
plays. Every one seemed to be trying <lb/>
to pull off the greatest stunts of hi. <lb/>
life in that game and It was one <lb/>
steady succession of wonderful plays, <lb/>
with White and Johnson pitching mag- <lb/>
ball. It Is as If you took a <lb/>
dozen great games of ball and crowd- <lb/>
ed the most sensational of each <lb/>
Into twelve innings. <lb/>
Then Conroy and the <lb/>
play that I think was the best and <lb/>
fastest that ever saw. <lb/>
was on second base with one out <lb/>
when whipped a fast bit <lb/>
Clyde <lb/>
play on the ball, and got it back to <lb/>
second Just in time to lose a close de- <lb/>
I thought the runner <lb/>
out and we kicked a bit, for it looked <lb/>
as if the decision might u. the <lb/>
game. It was almost a cinch that <lb/>
the neat batter would sacrifice, or try <lb/>
to, and the cinch went through. He <lb/>
bunted bard fast down <lb/>
second. I forget which one was hit <lb/>
log after Cree that day. but he <lb/>
and the bunt seemed to turn <lb/>
the game down. It <lb/>
seem possible for Gardner to get up to <lb/>
It In time. Wood bad been planning <lb/>
to cut off a hunt and make the play to <lb/>
third, and moving ha when the <lb/>
hunt went past him to his left. He <lb/>
turned chased after the ball <lb/>
while Gardner coming forward at <lb/>
top to reach Wood Jumped, <lb/>
down one hand, and grabbed <lb/>
ball. By a throw he might <lb/>
have caught the runner going to first, <lb/>
and he actually had started to make <lb/>
the throw when he seemed to have <lb/>
new Idea. I heard ht. yell <lb/>
and like a flash he <lb/>
the ball to Gardner, who had <lb/>
ten feet from and In perfect <lb/>
position to make a throw to third. <lb/>
The ball touched Gardner's <lb/>
hand, when I saw it winging at me <lb/>
a flash. whichever of <lb/>
the Highlander. It rounded <lb/>
third and was ten feet up the line <lb/>
Jockeying for a big lead lo try for <lb/>
home If the bunt rolled past Gardner, <lb/>
and I to do to grab the <lb/>
ball and plaster It on him as he tried <lb/>
to get back. <lb/>
Wood had in a flash that he <lb/>
only bad a desperate chance to cut <lb/>
off the runner at first, and he figured <lb/>
that the other runner would be <lb/>
to turn third and start for home. <lb/>
He knew he couldn't stop, turn and <lb/>
make the throw to third in time. o <lb/>
he the ball to Gardner, who <lb/>
grabbed the idea In a tenth of a sec- <lb/>

happened. The runner off third <lb/>
and going home. Cobb sliding <lb/>

double play the only way It could <lb/>
have been made. And I'm certain <lb/>
