Tampa Has Characteristics <lb/>
Other Great <lb/>
Cities <lb/>
D. J. <lb/>
Tampa. Flu. Sept. travel- <lb/>
who has taken in the western shore <lb/>
of our continent will recall that San <lb/>
Francisco has her China Town, a con- <lb/>
section of the city where <lb/>
the Chinese residents live to them- <lb/>
selves. Tampa has her counterpart <lb/>
of this in City, a section <lb/>
pied almost exclusively by Spaniards, <lb/>
Cubans and Italians, each nationality <lb/>
being somewhat to itself. They have <lb/>
their banks, one noticed with a capital <lb/>
f their stores, sonic of <lb/>
them as tine and attractive as any <lb/>
in the city; their club buildings, <lb/>
places of amusement, coffee houses, <lb/>
that it appears much like a city <lb/>
In their native country. A Saturday <lb/>
trip through City is a re- <lb/>
minder Of China Town in San Fran- <lb/>
or the Bowery in New York, <lb/>
though with an absence dancers <lb/>
that effect both the latter. Here the <lb/>
visitor can no at will without the least <lb/>
fear of molestation. <lb/>
There are also a large number of <lb/>
colored people and they. too. live <lb/>
In sections to themselves. In fact <lb/>
Tampa has some citizens of various <lb/>
nationalities SO that her <lb/>
Is quite cosmopolitan, but the South- <lb/>
sentiment largely prevails. This <lb/>
Is except on Sunday when every- <lb/>
thing is entirely too wide open. One <lb/>
good about the town is it goes <lb/>
to bed early and sets up early. The <lb/>
climate or something makes the folks <lb/>
sleepy and they want plenty of it. <lb/>
Not many of the stores keep open <lb/>
night and the street are desert- <lb/>
ed so early that even the picture shows <lb/>
are to close by <lb/>
While there is plenty of business <lb/>
and here, with every pros- <lb/>
of much more of both, Tampa is <lb/>
rather backward In civic pride. It <lb/>
Is naturally a beautiful place and <lb/>
could he made almost a paradise with <lb/>
little attention to lawns, parks and <lb/>
streets, which Just now are <lb/>
and apparently left to take care of <lb/>
themselves. This may In a measure <lb/>
be due to the absence of many home <lb/>
owners Just at this season, for Tam- <lb/>
pans love vacations and most of them <lb/>
who away do so late In the sum- <lb/>
mer. When preparations commence <lb/>
for winter visitors there may he <lb/>
In this particular. There <lb/>
Is room for it. <lb/>
In the country out <lb/>
and even In the suburb, are <lb/>
fruit proves <lb/>
It was a treat to get out to some of <lb/>
these and see the trees laden with <lb/>
fruit, some of It so heavy as to bend <lb/>
the limbs to the ground. The fruit <lb/>
Is green now but will begin ripen- <lb/>
next month. We were <lb/>
Interested In the grove of Mr. J. T. <lb/>
Wilder, who has acres of trees from <lb/>
which he says he will gather 5.000 <lb/>
boxes this season. He also raises eel- <lb/>
cry, pecans and poultry, specializing <lb/>
on and has a dairy herd. <lb/>
Though Mr. Wilder was horn in Flor- <lb/>
he Is of North Carolina his <lb/>
relatives being around Charlotte and <lb/>
he has enough Tar Heel blood to <lb/>
make him seem like one of us. He was <lb/>
just that courteous that he left a <lb/>
new baby long enough to show <lb/>
us about his grove and explain how <lb/>
he handles the trees and fruit. <lb/>
TAMPA. Fla. Sept. 23.-The Citrus <lb/>
industry is a big asset to <lb/>
As we have stated before this years <lb/>
clop is expected to bring <lb/>
to the state. have <lb/>
brought a decided improvement in <lb/>
marketing crop. This is done <lb/>
mainly through the Florida Citrus <lb/>
Exchange whose and <lb/>
main offices are In Tampa. The ex- <lb/>
change has brandies and packing <lb/>
houses throughout the orange district. <lb/>
It is jealous of the reputation of Flor- <lb/>
fruit, and not only looks lo the <lb/>
interest of the grower, but also of <lb/>
consumer. Every package of <lb/>
fruit bearing the stamp of the citrus <lb/>
exchange has the guarantee of being <lb/>
Just as represented and they <lb/>
book are filled at the time stipulated. <lb/>
Is not the case when fruit is <lb/>
bought indiscriminately from <lb/>
pendent shippers, who will palm off <lb/>
on the buyer anything that looks like <lb/>
an orange and will only fill <lb/>
if they happen to pick up the fruit <lb/>
under the price agreed upon, and <lb/>
failing to till them is agreed in case <lb/>
of an advance in price or an <lb/>
to get move from other <lb/>
i There is no reliability SI to <lb/>
quality, no certainty of getting the <lb/>
goods when buying outside the ex- <lb/>
change. <lb/>
Another the citrus exchange <lb/>
done Is to secure the enactment <lb/>
of laws regulating Shipments of fruit <lb/>
from state These laws the <lb/>
shipment of green, premature and in- <lb/>
fruit that ranches, the <lb/>
in such condition as to in- <lb/>
the reputation of Florida in com- <lb/>
petition with that from California, <lb/>
this early when the fruit is <lb/>
barely beginning to turn, some <lb/>
I pendent shippers anxious to licit <lb/>
In the market when prices are higher, <lb/>
I are trying to smuggle car loads of <lb/>
. green grape fruit out of the state <lb/>

This was the date tentatively filled <lb/>
by the commerce <lb/>

show cause why the new rates fixed <lb/>
by Hie commission not now <lb/>
be adopted them. Hut a the new <lb/>
post system has raised some <lb/>
complication in the adjustment of <lb/>
the rates, which the <lb/>
as well as express <lb/>
will take some time to straighten <lb/>
out, it i regarded as likely the <lb/>
hearings on the new rates will go <lb/>
over until December. <lb/>
According to passenger the engineer <lb/>
of the train stated that he did see <lb/>
anything of the child on the track <lb/>
II being already quite dark when the <lb/>
fatality occurred. <lb/>

As a matter of fact, some of the <lb/>
highly productive Industries in <lb/>

And some of the <lb/>

depends upon him. It depends upon <lb/>
what is inside his thinking And <lb/>
when you once gel a of <lb/>
lated monopoly, than you gal a sys- <lb/>
of controlled labor, forget <lb/>
that. Narrow line of <lb/>
and you stiffen the lines of labor <lb/>
control. You have no now a free <lb/>
market your labor any more than <lb/>
you have I free market for your com- <lb/>

therefore determine the amount Of <lb/>
