The parcels post section is radically <lb />
different from that incorporated In <lb />
the House bill, which provides a flat <lb />
rate of postage for all distances. The <lb />
Senate provision is that of the Bourne <lb />

makes the parcels post apply only <lb />

The Senate committee struck out of <lb />
the House bill the provision giving <lb />

and most destructive that has ever <lb />
in this town, originated last <lb />
night about midnight in the plant of <lb />
the Lumber Company, com- <lb />
destroying the plant and a <lb />
large portion of the lumber yard. <lb />
Thousands of feet of rough lumber <lb />
were stacked on the yards and the <lb />
sheds with finished lumber ready <lb />
shipment. <lb />
The loss cannot be stated accurate- <lb />
but at a estimate it <lb />
will be from to par- <lb />
covered with insurance. <lb />
fire origin in the roof <lb />
of the boiler room, the explosion of <lb />
a lantern used by the night watch- <lb />
man the- cause. When the tan <lb />
tern exploded Bro was among <lb />
the timbers of the building, which <lb />
were covered with dry sawdust and <lb />
so fast did It spread that before the <lb />
watchman could give the alarm the <lb />
i was in a mass of flames. <lb />
The lumber plant was Just <lb />
outside the Incorporate limits but was <lb />
near the main business section of the <lb />
town, had it not been for the still <lb />
of the night the damage that <lb />
would have been done is Inestimable <lb />
For a time little hope was had for <lb />
saving the Presbyterian church which <lb />
was located across the street from <lb />
a corner of the Guilford plant. <lb />
were also in danger and <lb />
Hit for a slight wind which turned <lb />
the course of the flames they would <lb />
have been destroyed also. <lb />
The Guilford Lumber <lb />
company is a branch of the Greens <lb />
firm of the same name. Its plant <lb />
here was one of the largest lumber <lb />
plans in this section and was one <lb />
of the largest manufacturing <lb />
in Troy. it was located <lb />
here more years ago and has <lb />
been the means of giving employ- <lb />
hundreds of people, bring- <lb />
thousands of dollars to the town. <lb />
Should the company decide not to <lb />
rebuild It will be a great to the <lb />

THE FLYING DUTCHMAN'S BIGGEST EXPLOIT <lb />
BLOT memory eight years of gelding, erase from the <lb />
records the most remarkable batting feats recorded la the National <lb />
league In last expunge from pages of baseball history <lb />
many marvelous plays that made the name of Hans Wagner a house- <lb />
hold word. Leave one day, Oct. to be exact, and that would <lb />
be sufficient to give the Flying Dutchman a fame that would never fade <lb />
from annals of America's leading pastime. <lb />
That was the red letter day of a remarkable career on diamond. <lb />
It was the biggest day In a life brimful of action and thrilling exploits. It <lb />
was day the great won a frame almost single-handed, saved a <lb />
pennant for Pittsburgh la the <lb />
est world's series ever played and <lb />
gave the world the greatest <lb />
exhibition of batting, fielding and <lb />
base running ever seam la a game for <lb />
the highest honors. <lb />
Few baseball series have stirred <lb />
Tandem to higher pitches of <lb />
or cast loyal rooters down to <lb />
deeper depths of gloom than the <lb />
classic of 1909. Detroit had woo the <lb />
pennant In the American league In s <lb />
W canter and Pittsburgh has taken the <lb />

I The clubs seemed the class of <lb />
l the big leagues without a single cloud <lb />

In struggle the <lb />
league champions teemed about even- <lb />
d Pittsburgh, with Babe <lb />
Adams on slab, won the opening <lb />
game. Detroit, with Wild Bill <lb />
van at his best, was unconquerable <lb />
la the second contest, Howard Cam- <lb />
the pirate pitcher, being driven <lb />
to cover under a constant rain of, <lb />
blows that evened tho honors. <lb />
With the series a tie. the teams <lb />
tied Into Detroit for the third game. <lb />
Had Jennings been able to coach his <lb />
men to victory that fatal day. De- <lb />
would have won the world's <lb />
pennant <lb />
But In the path of the j <lb />
loomed Wagner, arch executioner of <lb />
hopes. The Dutchman was everywhere In that game. Every more . <lb />
of this great player brought a thrill to tho Pittsburgh fans they will never <lb />
forget. He raced about tho infield, gathered In six sizzling ground balls <lb />
from the bats of Cobb, Crawford and their companions error, <lb />
stole four bases and drove out four hits in five trips to the <lb />
Coming to bat for tho fifth in the ninth Inning Wagner smashed the <lb />
ball to the outfield for bis fourth hit and stole his fourth base, completing a <lb />
wonderful performance, winning a game almost unaided, saving a world's <lb />
pennant and giving Pittsburgh Its lone flag In a clash for the <lb />
game's most coveted trophy. <lb />

speech since he returned from <lb />

his reasons for leading in the <lb />
of a new party. <lb />
His address was delivered at a <lb />
meeting of the New York State <lb />
Chairmen of the national <lb />
party. Colonel Roosevelt did not <lb />
intend to speak, he declared, but the <lb />
chairmen would not be denied. <lb />
Colonel Roosevelt No man <lb />
knows better than I that enthusiasm <lb />
and principles cannot be <lb />
without organization and work. <lb />
A great responsibility rests upon you <lb />
men here, who are undertaking the <lb />
organization of a new party which is <lb />
to stand four squared to democracy, <lb />
which is to be literally the party of <lb />
the people. <lb />
It will fight on live and not <lb />
dead ones. It will embody a protest <lb />
against the corruption of both of the <lb />
old party mat nines. It will be a party <lb />
into which ex-Democrats and ex- <lb />
Republicans without regard to their <lb />
political past as to come in an exact <lb />
equality and to have each the same <lb />
j n the party management. <lb />
When we get this started It will be <lb />
a party and not only representing <lb />
the people at election time but will <lb />
represent them in party management. <lb />
We are going to see to it that it is or <lb />
