THE HOME OF FASHIONS <lb />
Consolidated <lb />
Tobacco Co., Meets <lb />
The ninth annual muting of the <lb />
stockholders of the Farmers <lb />
Tobacco Company was held <lb />
today in the Star warehouse. Owing <lb />
lo the busy time with the farmers, the <lb />
attendance at the meeting was not <lb />
large. <lb />
The statements me officers for <lb />
me past year showed satisfactory <lb />
progress of the business of the com- <lb />
with its standing the best of <lb />
any time in its history. In the <lb />
ears the company has been doing <lb />
business the stockholders have been <lb />
paid cash dividends amounting to <lb />
Hit 1-2 per cent, or an average of <lb />
about IT per cent per year. The board <lb />
of directors decided not to pay a <lb />
cash dividend this year, as some very <lb />
extensive improvements are to be <lb />
made to the property in enlarging <lb />
the warehouses, and it was best to <lb />
do this out of the net earnings of <lb />
the past year, rather than pay out <lb />
earnings in dividends and make <lb />
the improvements on a credit to be <lb />
paid out of the earnings of the next <lb />
year's business. The stockholders <lb />
present expressed their approval of <lb />
this course. <lb />
It certainly shows a fine business <lb />
that can pay cash dividends of <lb />
1-2 per cent nine years, hence to <lb />
puss dividend for one year and <lb />
use the earnings to make such <lb />
as will put the company <lb />
in position to do even s larger bus- <lb />
was the wise thing to do. The <lb />
officers of the company have conduct- <lb />
ed its Affairs admirably and along <lb />
strict business principles and it <lb />

NEW YORK. April Spring and the other of silk and both sleeves <lb />
fashion returns from Paris as all in <lb />
and from them It may be inferred that <lb />
the change toward greater <lb />
predicted earlier In the season, has <lb />
tn-iii fairly launched and Is making <lb />
steady progress. Steadily, though <lb />
this change has been com- <lb />
until now no one is surprised to <lb />
hear that flounces are back in favor, <lb />
skirts are a trifle wider, belts have <lb />
returned and panniers are among the <lb />
prospects of the Immediate future. <lb />
These are the first note <lb />
that Paris has struck the Dolly Var- <lb />
den type of costumes which some ob- <lb />
servers predict will soon be among <lb />
us. Of course the now panniers are <lb />
little more than draperies that cling <lb />
closely to the figure, but they show, <lb />
without any manner of doubt, a ten- <lb />
to add a little more to <lb />
the hip than is apparent at the foot <lb />
of the skirt. <lb />
One French designer has brought <lb />
out a decided pannier model which <lb />
has a voluminous skirt drapery start, <lb />
at variance with the narrow lit- <lb />
petticoat beneath. This frock is <lb />
built of blue and white spotted <lb />
lard in combination with lace. <lb />
The narrow petticoat of lace <lb />
how as far as the knee. Above it <lb />
is the pannier drapery of blue and <lb />
white foulard, which is gathered <lb />
are short enough to show to the elbow <lb />
the long gloves of faint tau silk em- <lb />
delicately in blue. <lb />
This vogue of effects Is <lb />
another Interesting style feature of <lb />
the season. Extremely graceful <lb />
in drapery are achieved by cross- <lb />
one fabric over the other In this <lb />
one-sided fashion, and usually the <lb />
used underneath is lace of some <lb />
sort, all over laces being tremendous- <lb />
fashionable just now. <lb />
The lace skirt flounces has assured- <lb />
come into its own once more, but <lb />
is Is. like the subdued and <lb />
clinging, made of soft, cobwebby laces <lb />
and giving no crinoline effect upon <lb />
the skirt upon which It is used. <lb />
and triple flounce skirts of lace <lb />
are shown by some of the greatest de- <lb />
signers. Enormous quantities of th <lb />
fine are being used for tunics, <lb />
skirt flounces, bodice etc., <lb />
and almost all of the elaborate even- <lb />
frocks call for such trimming. <lb />
The type of frock which a <lb />
draped princess front effect, <lb />
with a petticoat showing <lb />
about the foot and the diagonal <lb />
cleverly into a train <lb />
into the back, is well represented <lb />
the new handsome evening frocks, <lb />
and. always dignified and beautiful if <lb />
skilfully made, is made to have an air <lb />
at <lb />
Memorial <lb />
or full at the waist line, so that at of novelty by new hicks of sleeve and <lb />
the knee he pannier must measure and bodice details by the won- <lb />
least tine yards around, over a new materials employed. The <lb />
more than the lace skirt beneath. The Chiffon taffetas in changeable effect <lb />
silk is gathered and turned under, <lb />
falling over the lace In a deep puff, <lb />
which gives the pannier effect. <lb />
The bodice of this frock is half of <lb />
lace and half of blue foulard, draped <lb />
across the lace at one side and fasten- <lb />
under tin opposite arm with a <lb />
flat rosette. One sleeve is of lace <lb />
and in light hues and the changeable <lb />
faille are very successfully <lb />
used for such models, the silk being <lb />
draped over fine lace or tulle with <lb />
lace border. But the marvelous <lb />
materials of the season are par- <lb />
fitted for such handling and <lb />
the designers have appreciated this. <lb />

the News and Observer contest for <lb />
one of the automobiles that paper is <lb />

REV. C. M. ROCK RAPS <lb />
EXISTING CONDITIONS <lb />
Those that were present at last <lb />
night's services at the Baptist church <lb />
are to be congratulated for never be- <lb />
fore In the history or Rev. C. M. <lb />
Rock's pastorate In town did he <lb />
make as sincere a heart to heart talk <lb />
to the congregation as he did last <lb />
night. <lb />
In words that came from the <lb />
of his heart the deep he <lb />
has tor the people of Greenville and <lb />
their well living as Christian <lb />
the pastor denounced and con- <lb />
the example the older people <lb />
of the community are furnishing the <lb />
growing generation. He said there <lb />
can't help seeing the elder people do <lb />
It. Card parties, where prizes are <lb />
put up to excite rivalry and interest, <lb />
were also flayed by the pastor. <lb />
Rev, Rock declared that he had long <lb />
debated with himself before speaking <lb />
as he did. but ho fully realized that If <lb />
he were to withhold from <lb />
that which he did, he would not <lb />
have served his people as God com- <lb />
him to and as the people <lb />
would have him serve them. <lb />
The Baptist pastor Is to be com- <lb />
mended fur his outspokenness. No- <lb />
body us deceitful to himself <lb />
as to doubt Rev. Rock's sincerity. <lb />
Many people present last night re- <lb />
was no wonder our boys curds, alter services and warmly <lb />
dice, smoked and swore, when the pastor for his <lb />
It almost appears to me that he <lb />
was translated to he shores of <lb />
a blaze glory surround- <lb />
ed by such educational environment <lb />
that one might be <lb />
persuaded to believe that in the in- <lb />
scrutable wisdom of providence, it <lb />
must have been so appointed, that <lb />
he might on this occasion become a <lb />
sacrifice on the altar of the cause <lb />
that was dear to his heart, that the <lb />
cause itself might the more signally <lb />
be carved and ingrained into the very <lb />
hearts, souls and marrow of our <lb />
Southern people, so that those of us <lb />
who are left on the shore of time, <lb />
and those who are to come after us <lb />
shall accept this sacrifice as an In- <lb />
to make his cause our cause <lb />
in loving remembrance of our friend <lb />
Charlie Aycock; a real inspiration to <lb />
carry on his great work in triumph <lb />
until the last words that fell from <lb />
our orator's lips shall be an <lb />
truth not only in North Caro- <lb />
but be the shining mark of dis- <lb />
of all our land. <lb />
You have doubtless observed, that <lb />
in referring to the deceased friend, <lb />
have avoided the word death. The <lb />
death and Charles Aycock <lb />
are incongruous to me, they do not <lb />
chime or or ling together. A <lb />
man possessing the heart, tempera- <lb />
spirit the desire <lb />
to help and serve the poor weak and <lb />
helpless with all his varied <lb />
talents, gigantic powers <lb />
and genius can never die. He will <lb />
always be living to his dear ones and <lb />
to the people of North Carolina, he <lb />
loved so well, and for which <lb />
he made so many sacrifices. <lb />

There are many In this audience <lb />

was no such universal mourning and <lb />
no such outpouring of the love <lb />

offered to Aycock. <lb />
And a suitable monument in <lb />

this service will organize for that <lb />

successful, Aycock will go down In <lb />
history as file most unique figure in <lb />

for the light have received. <lb />
Hut I must abate for the moment <lb />

and within my brief limit of time, <lb />
give my Individual opinion of his <lb />
power not only In the cause of <lb />
cation but as private citizen, states- <lb />
man and as a lawyer. <lb />
power was oratory and <lb />
character, humaneness blended with <lb />
a magnanimous, sacrificed spirit. <lb />
His oratory was not earned as was <lb />
by labor, it <lb />
was struck as a spark by the <lb />
mastery of genius and sprung like <lb />
full armed from the cleft <lb />
brain of Jove. Indeed, Aycock was <lb />
the arch eloquence. He was <lb />
North Carolina's greatest Colossus In <lb />
tho art of moving men's minds by <lb />
speech and held without a rival <lb />
his day the high place of presiding <lb />
divinity in that greatest of arts, the <lb />
art of sweeping the chords of <lb />
man passion by the witchery of <lb />
words and the reason of <lb />
men by the force of logic and per- <lb />
suasion of eloquence. <lb />
His power of reasoning and logical <lb />
faculty was as remarkable as his <lb />
powers of oratory. He seemed to <lb />
the faculty of reaching <lb />
alone never made a <lb />

cent years, which is bound to become <lb />
greater and greater under our pres- <lb />
banking practices. <lb />
The growth of large city banks and <lb />
the building up of banking <lb />
of has been more- <lb />
pronounced since the panic of 1907. <lb />
The great banks of New York in the <lb />
full of that year, despite their com- <lb />
over the liquid funds of the <lb />
country, were unable to prevent a <lb />
money panic in a lime of peace and <lb />
prosperity. <lb />
was this painful realization of <lb />

movement toward powerful bunkum <lb />

Mr. Brown, a few days ago <lb />
very strongly emphasized the fact <lb />
that all hough cotton has gone to <lb />

by no means assume that they can <lb />

spinners believe the farmers are re- <lb />

they are now buying large- <lb />
beyond their ant <lb />
as they do, that the r <lb />
acreage will mean higher prices next and <lb />
fall. Thia explains the recent ad- <lb />
in the all over the <lb />
country. <lb />
In prof Mr. Brown showed a <lb />
telegram he had Just received from <lb />

Is it not too bad that all <lb />

Lately we have been eagerly and <lb />
repeatedly invited lo walk with some- <lb />

that would have caused <lb />
a panic in bis country. <lb />
A country must have a stock of <lb />
money as a medium of exchange, but <lb />
every ounce of precious metal <lb />
added to Its money stock Increases <lb />
the cost of exchanging goods. Mil- <lb />
lions of days of human labor are <lb />
represented in the stock of gold lying <lb />
in the Treasury. It is as wasteful <lb />
to use two dollars to do the work <lb />
that one could do. as H is to use two <lb />
locomotives haul the train that <lb />
one could haul as well. <lb />
No more sense is there In feeling <lb />
pride In a large per capita <lb />
than In a large per capita tax- <lb />
A country which by a <lb />
monetary policy, keeps an <lb />
unnecessarily large sum of wealth <lb />
at work performing exchanges <lb />
when, under more scientific manage- <lb />
a much less sum would do the <lb />
work as <lb />
England can finance world <lb />
with her comparatively small stock <lb />
of money because she has a more <lb />
scientific banking system than the <lb />
Slates. She makes every <lb />
ounce of gold work. <lb />
FOR THE I V <lb />
years old <lb />
once upon a time, my dear <lb />
children, there was a frog who wan- <lb />
away from the muddy and <lb />
slimy pond that had been his home. <lb />
This being a wise frog least he <lb />
thought so on starling on <lb />
his journey he reared up on his hind <lb />
legs and undertook to walking man- <lb />

seen this mode of travel and he was <lb />
not to be mistaken for a lowly <lb />
He hopped and hopped and then <lb />
some All that hopping brought him <lb />
to a field of green grass where <lb />
cows were grazing. Another hop <lb />
or two and the frog was directly <lb />
one of quiet bovines. <lb />
Now here was something bigger <lb />
than the frog had ever seen. Why <lb />
was even bigger than a man. The <lb />
decided he no longer wanted <lb />
lo travel or be anything else small- <lb />
than the unconsciously admired <lb />
cow. But how- was he to accomplish <lb />

came up in our association of city <lb />
school superintendents and the old- <lb />
est men in the profession stated that <lb />
in their long experience they had <lb />
found the cigarette habit destroys <lb />
all hope for educating a boy. <lb />
In addition to the baneful effects of <lb />
smoking on mind and body, it under- <lb />
mines ethical nature. The <lb />
of boy whose ethical <lb />
standards are not grossly degraded <lb />
Is zero. There is something about <lb />

It is the object of the Drainage Con- <lb />
