FRIDAY. JANUARY 1912. <lb />
JUSTICE AND PROHIBITION. <lb />
The hand of justice descended <lb />
heavily upon the shoulders of six <lb />
men Wednesday night. Three <lb />
and three colored men faced Judge Al- <lb />
In the Pitt county court house <lb />
self-confessed of a law the <lb />
enforcement of which is costing <lb />
North Carolina many dollars. For <lb />
some time past these six men had <lb />
been engaged in the traffic of liquor <lb />
notwithstanding the fact that North <lb />
Carolina Is a legal dry state. And <lb />
In the discharge of his duty Judge <lb />
Allen sentenced them to terms on the <lb />
Toads, varying from twelve to six <lb />
moths. Exception was made In the <lb />
case of one white man. his case re- <lb />
open for further <lb />
But with this one exception <lb />
Justice was made to reign over crime. <lb />
a hardened criminal. We might per- <lb />
haps say that he is a victim of cir- <lb />
and his case Is really the <lb />
only of mercy; We feel <lb />
sorry for him. <lb />
By no do we say that be- <lb />
cause a series of circumstances at- <lb />
a man's crime he should go <lb />
free. We voted a law and are <lb />
paying to see to it that It is en- <lb />
forced. We further congratulate <lb />
ourselves for having so zealous a so- <lb />
as Mr. and so able <lb />
a judge as Judge Allen and feel sure <lb />
that their efforts will go a long way <lb />
towards making Pitt county dean, <lb />
safe and healthy. All the same there <lb />
is one case where, from all appear- <lb />
a heavy bond would have <lb />
brought the desired effect. <lb />
In his charge to the Grand Jury. <lb />
Judge explained that a criminal <lb />
is sent to prison. 1st. to protect society <lb />
and 2nd to reform the criminal and he <lb />
mentioned the Constitution to back <lb />
his statement. We thoroughly agree <lb />
with him. When a man becomes a <lb />
criminal society is better off without <lb />
him and the or the roads <lb />
are the places for him. It is then <lb />
up to the to cure him be- <lb />
fore restoring him to society. This <lb />
Is perfectly true In the case of <lb />
But where a man has only <lb />
fallen once and that one time has <lb />
not really reached very low, it seems <lb />
unfair to class him with the <lb />
The stigma attached to him <lb />
will forever live with him and will <lb />
be forever a handicap in his <lb />
for Why should the <lb />
need such a long time to re- <lb />
form a man who has only committed <lb />
a crime and that only In a very mild <lb />
form <lb />
case seems inclined to <lb />
to ha bee la <lb />
matters this seems to <lb />
be his one weakness. His mania, <lb />
perhaps. <lb />
We all agree that is but a <lb />
paltry sum to Morgan. Yet. great as <lb />
his mind is for figures, did he for a <lb />
minute stop to think what that small <lb />
fortune would have meant had it <lb />
gone through other channels <lb />
would feed and clothe sixty <lb />
lies of four people each for one whole <lb />
year. It would give a university <lb />
cation to many deserving young men <lb />
whose fathers have no time or money <lb />
to look for curios. It would mean a <lb />
comfortable up of to <lb />
many old people, whose advanced <lb />
years and infirmities make death <lb />
welcome. It would mean the <lb />
of Park benches in our great <lb />
cities, by those who are crowded out <lb />
from employment. It would mean <lb />
the sudden stop of so many bread <lb />
lines, the shame of our social system <lb />
In large cities. <lb />
Perhaps Morgan when visiting <lb />
museums and art galleries passes <lb />
hurriedly by the pictures showing old <lb />
and young age hugging their misery <lb />
into a restless sleep in doorsteps and <lb />
park benches. And some of this <lb />
are pronounced masterpieces, <lb />
too. It would be well for the million- <lb />
to take his time and rest his <lb />
critical upon such realistic <lb />
But perhaps this Is another <lb />
of the truths that hurt. And because <lb />
it hurts J. P. Morgan passes, them <lb />

ADVISING THE FARMER. <lb />
Every now and then experts make <lb />
use of space in publications to tell <lb />
And furthermore society in our farmers just what not to do and <lb />
have to do It has been said that <lb />
him remain in its I advice is the cheapest thing on earth <lb />
But for the man who persists on and not without has the <lb />
Startling facts were brought the law and literally statement been made. Everybody can <lb />
back with his head after <lb />
his sentence or paying his fine, <lb />
punishment for his crime. <lb />

by Solicitor into the <lb />
selling of liquor in Pitt county. Per- <lb />
haps the most starting being the re- <lb />
in a secluded railroad landing of <lb />
whiskey shipments amounting to <lb />
barrels during only two months. Men <lb />
who could possibly be traced or <lb />
who had long ago quit the world of <lb />
the living were the consignees of that <lb />
whiskey, and back of it all a white <lb />
man, who looks more like a prosper- <lb />

THE HOTEL QUESTION. <lb />
So very little have we heard lately <lb />
about the hotel proposition made by <lb />
Proctor Bros., of to the <lb />
moneyed people of our community <lb />
that we are afraid that not unlike <lb />
other questions this one has been an- <lb />
by a silence that does not <lb />
mean consent. <lb />
It would seem that not a fairer <lb />
proposition could have been put to <lb />
the business men of this community. <lb />
For a very long time we have told <lb />
each other that if there was some- <lb />
Greenville needed and needed <lb />
mighty bad. It was a modern hotel. <lb />
It has been shown that a hotel would <lb />
redound to the benefit of practically <lb />
every business and property man in <lb />
Greenville and yet when it came to <lb />
talking dollars and cents quietness <lb />
prevailed. It does not mean that we <lb />
no longer need the hotel in question. <lb />
Far from It. Only a week ago the <lb />
hotel facilities were put to a test <lb />
and they were found to be painfully <lb />
wanting. The only hotel we possess, <lb />
worthy of that name, had to turn <lb />
down people who had come to see <lb />
what they could see and it was to <lb />
be deplored that we could not house <lb />
them better. <lb />
We do need the hotel. Greenville <lb />
is progressive and can surely afford <lb />
to be so and it is hard to understand <lb />
how such an important an issue is <lb />
not given more and prompter <lb />
I It would be ridiculously to ex- <lb />
outsiders to do all for us. We <lb />
never dream of having our neighbors <lb />
foot our grocery bills. Out of the <lb />
question, we say. And thus far we <lb />
are right. But. why not use the same <lb />
the of the law s but a fitting that <lb />
built himself a reputation. It is of hotel <lb />
Many years ago there was a king <lb />
In France who thought a great deal <lb />
more of reading matter than soap <lb />
and water. At least in a certain book <lb />
called Book of this good <lb />
are sometimes made at the expense <lb />
of character and much harm is <lb />
brought about by such people. <lb />
The property owners Is <lb />
tor have made a fair <lb />
as we see it, and whilst we <lb />
it that the liquor was translated Into <lb />
currency for his own profit. This <lb />
had for years been plying his <lb />
misery and crime spreading trade and <lb />
his example of good profits and <lb />
parent proof against punishment <lb />
acted as a magnet to induce others <lb />
into the illegal trading. Justice was <lb />
Just In regards to this man, who <lb />
thought a great deal more of his <lb />
personal greed than the good of his <lb />
community into which he was In- <lb />
the germ of crime to increase <lb />
his bank account. Such a man may <lb />
or may not deserve sympathy; we are <lb />
rather strongly inclined to think that <lb />
he deserves none whatever. He knew <lb />
full well what he was doing. <lb />
Another white man sat not three <lb />
feet from him, to Judge Al- <lb />
avowal to clean the county of <lb />
such men. He was another of <lb />
the law but where no sympathy need <lb />
be shown such a man as we mention- <lb />
ed before, this second white man <lb />
might have been shown some con- <lb />
His crime, his <lb />
of the law Is comparatively young <lb />
while the motive that might have in- <lb />
him to engage in the illegal <lb />
trade, appears to be minimized by the <lb />
fact that he stood as the only sup- <lb />
port of relatives whose old age and <lb />
youth made it pressing for him to <lb />
add in some other way to his Income. <lb />
Perhaps he was a victim of the ex- <lb />
ample furnished by the first man. <lb />
Impunity and a small fortune had at- <lb />
The empty liquor bottles in the base <lb />
of the court house might stand <lb />
for a little investigation, <lb />
tended the first man's venture into <lb />
the Illegal field and it is hardly to <lb />
be wondered that more men did not <lb />
avail themselves of the opportunity <lb />
offered. The case of this second <lb />
white man is mighty sad. Poverty <lb />
when a boy prevented him from <lb />
reaching an without <lb />
which It is dangerous to enter life <lb />
By donation from the people of Mi <lb />
community he was given a chain-. <lb />
to attend high school for one year <lb />
in which time he led all his classes <lb />
While till In his teens he Joined th <lb />
army and served his country In tin <lb />
Through, all bis <lb />
of its beautifully illuminated folios. <lb />
This in itself seems <lb />
cant, because many years ago the <lb />
had not as yet been <lb />
dreamed about The strange <lb />
to this act of however, <lb />
is likely to cost one of America's <lb />
foremost financiers a sum In the <lb />
neighborhood If It happened <lb />
this J, Morgan was <lb />
looking old things over in Paris and <lb />
in one of the historical libraries he <lb />
came upon a musty volume which <lb />
greatly interested the millionaire on <lb />
account of its age. He inquired from <lb />
a polite attendant as to its value. The <lb />
man answered that its intrinsic val- <lb />
was put at but here <lb />
he turned to a page he knew <lb />
owing to a thumb print left In one <lb />
of its pages by a King Cole of French <lb />
history its real value was double the <lb />
former amount, or in other words <lb />
J. P. did not hesitate but <lb />
the offered the sum. He <lb />
was told that it was not for sale, but <lb />
the property of the city of Paris. <lb />
was not discouraged. He offered <lb />
to pay for the price of a similar copy <lb />
to be presented the museum and a <lb />
handsome commission for the attend- <lb />
ant. Some Parisians avert that <lb />
got his copy. Others say he did <lb />
not <lb />
However that may be, we are well <lb />
acquainted with Morgan's curio pro- <lb />
and doubt not that money <lb />
is no object to him when he sets his <lb />
heart in anything that has age writ- <lb />
ten over its face. <lb />
So far so good. Morgan has a great <lb />
of money. Perhaps he himself <lb />
not know exactly what it <lb />
amounts to. But is this a reason <lb />
why he should go about making such <lb />
use of It Nobody ever tried to deny <lb />
hat history is one grand thing that <lb />
countries to Yet when <lb />
it comes to compiling every <lb />
country has produced historians be- <lb />
sides who Morgan looks insignificant- <lb />
small. <lb />
Why Morgan should persist in get- <lb />
rid of his wealth in gathering <lb />
of questionable <lb />
This is not exactly the case with do not a rush cover <lb />
us. We right here, have the Interest time has elapsed for the money- <lb />
of our farmers at heart and men of our community to think it <lb />
one In Pitt county is doing its level and steps towards accepting <lb />
best to put the county at the head <lb />
of he state and keep it here. <lb />
strange about this. We are not <lb />
speculators; we are not stock <lb />
we are not casting bad seed <lb />
around to gather a harvest of misery. <lb />
We want the best for ourselves and <lb />
go about it the very best way we can. <lb />
For this reason The Reflector has, <lb />
from time to time, taken the liberty <lb />
to address the county farmer in terms <lb />
that only are calculated to do him <lb />
good and thereby do the county good. <lb />
Neither do we mean to say that the <lb />
average Pitt county farmer needs to <lb />
be deluged with advice. Yet we be- <lb />
should our farmers make them- <lb />
selves more Independent of some <lb />
It is not be rounded <lb />
up In Greenville. We dare say that <lb />
many men could put that in <lb />
yet the fact remains that days <lb />
after the matter was brought before <lb />
them by the secretary of the Caro- <lb />
Club, would appear that they <lb />
have decided to decide nothing. <lb />
are ball Its teat to attract at- <lb />
but its beat was not enough. <lb />
People sleep their hardest between <lb />
the hours of a m. and daybreak and <lb />
Greenville people are no exception. <lb />
They were sound asleep and the bell <lb />
was not strong enough to disturb <lb />
them with the celerity which the par- <lb />
case called for. This In spite <lb />
of the offer made by some of the <lb />
of Hope Fire Co. to sleep in the <lb />
lire house provided the town <lb />
provided quarters, may have a <lb />
healthy effect upon that body. Green- <lb />
ville should make ready for such em- <lb />
and stay ready. The <lb />
victimized by fire must naturally <lb />
feel that he has not been treated right <lb />
by bis town. <lb />
NORTH CAROLINA PREACHERS. <lb />
The second North Carolinian to be <lb />
called to London has finally accept- <lb />
ed and after repeated invitations Is <lb />
to sail for Britain's capital to fill the <lb />
post formerly occupied by Dr. F. B. <lb />
Myers In Christ Church. Dr. L G. <lb />
Broughton is the second Baptist <lb />
preacher to honor his state in this <lb />
manner, Rev. A. C- Dixon having gone <lb />
to London some time ago to become <lb />
pastor of church. <lb />
Dr. L G. Broughton was born in <lb />
Raleigh and although career be- <lb />
as a physician, he soon deserted <lb />
it for his favorite calling. He had <lb />
set his heart on Christian work. He <lb />
soon entered the ministry and be had <lb />
successful pastorates in <lb />
Salem, N. C, and Roanoke, Va. From <lb />
this latter place he went to Atlanta <lb />
where he built a great congregation <lb />
together a church, hospital and <lb />
all the appurtenances of an <lb />
tonal church that is monumental. <lb />
Long ago he received the call from <lb />
London, but being engaged In build- <lb />
his he would not <lb />
desert it and now that he has com- <lb />

Gospel In the largest city in the <lb />

Such sons do great honor to the <lb />

CALLING <lb />
From tonight till tomorrow noon <lb />
Greenville Is going to entertain <lb />
about forty visitors from other <lb />
states and Greenville Is in a flutter <lb />
of expectancy. Some of these <lb />
tors may become In time citizens of <lb />
this community, and naturally we <lb />
feel like the rich mother entertain- <lb />
a titled foreigner. Of course this <lb />
is only figuratively speaking, or <lb />
writing. <lb />
There is but little doubt that we <lb />
will know what to do with the <lb />
that are honoring us with their <lb />
presence and we are not afraid to <lb />
say that when they return to their <lb />
homes they will speak favorably of <lb />
Greenville and its people. <lb />
We are proud of what we can do <lb />
and usually so. So, Is not to <lb />
Two state papers have been <lb />
a great deal of noise lately about <lb />
The <lb />
says that Wilmington has <lb />
most linker In the and sub- <lb />
the statement by further <lb />
saying that the seacoast town has over <lb />
barrooms. The Raleigh Dally <lb />
Times has something to say about <lb />
this supposed supremacy of liquor. <lb />
Three years ago, our friend of <lb />
says, a man in tobacco town <lb />
received barrels. To above two <lb />
papers we have to say like the man <lb />
who has Just listened to a wonderful <lb />
tale, back here in <lb />
few miles from Greenville <lb />
barrels were received during <lb />
November and December of last year. <lb />
Our friends of the Raleigh and <lb />
press will acknowledge <lb />
that Toddy has some right to a large <lb />
spot In the map. They will readily <lb />
see that the cases they mention are <lb />
as naught compared to our own. We <lb />
might add for our friends enlighten- <lb />
that the gentleman who presided <lb />
over at Toddy was a white man and <lb />
furthermore that the same white man <lb />
was rounded up and sentenced to <lb />
twelve months on the roads by Judge <lb />
Allen last week. <lb />
from Greenville are on <lb />
or by way of rivers the influence <lb />
they have in the development of the <lb />
country which they course is of the <lb />
greatest Importance. In our own <lb />
case much has been said lately about <lb />
Improving both our county roads <lb />
and Tar river. The Carolina club <lb />
has discussed the problem and has <lb />
appointed committees to Investigate <lb />
and report upon probable methods <lb />
of bettering our transportation beds. <lb />
The question of convict labor for <lb />
the improvement of our roads has <lb />
been heard about with its pros and <lb />
cons and if the business men of <lb />
our community will but keep at it <lb />
we may, In the near future have good <lb />
roads In our county. An <lb />
firm which has attained great <lb />
success has for its motto <lb />
everlastingly at it brings <lb />
We can't deny this is the best <lb />
motto for our roads commission. So <lb />
far as to good roads. <lb />
We now learn from a very good <lb />
source that if the river and harbor <lb />
bill reaches congress Tar river will <lb />
be given a depth of six feet and a <lb />
seventy-five feet channel. This is <lb />
certainly good news and nobody <lb />
fails to realize what such an <lb />
would mean for the <lb />
rounding country. River <lb />
is a good deal cheaper <lb />
any other means of transportation <lb />
and farmers In the immediate <lb />
of Tar river will no doubt avail <lb />
themselves of the opportunity of <lb />
good, cheap river transportation. <lb />
Among other things do not forget <lb />
that Greenville needs that hotel. <lb />
The government Is now after the <lb />
harvester trust, there is likely <lb />
to be both a reaping and a weeping. <lb />
This reminds us that it is not far <lb />
to spring, but there will be more cold <lb />
weather before It lands, as the ground <lb />
hog is yet to have his <lb />
The press agents of the candidates <lb />
continue to try to work off their <lb />
stuff on the newspapers. And how <lb />
they do waste stamps and stationery. <lb />
In this open weather people who <lb />
were housed up during the snow will <lb />
be getting out trading. advertise- <lb />
is a mighty good thing to meet <lb />
them with. <lb />
Around Durham the farmers are <lb />
being advised to cut out tobacco and <lb />
raise a big crop of tobacco. Accord- <lb />
to our way of thinking, if the <lb />
farmers want good prices next fall <lb />
they should not overdo the thing in <lb />
either cotton or tobacco, <lb />
Greenville does not do much blow- <lb />
about of charity, but no- <lb />
body here is allowed to suffer through <lb />
want If their condition <lb />
known, or even anticipated, <lb />
Work has commenced on the public <lb />
building in our neighbor town, Wash- <lb />
Before many months <lb />
hope to see something like that go- <lb />
on In Greenville. <lb />
--------o <lb />
Wilmington has over sixty whiskey <lb />
for trial at court there next <lb />
week, and the proper thing is dona <lb />
the county road force will be con- <lb />
augmented. <lb />
--------o <lb />
Harper's Weekly says it quit be- <lb />
cause Governor Wilson called K <lb />
down. That ought to settle<lb />
UM <lb />
All this have they said, we are so sure of pleas- <lb />
every wide-awake farmer Is bound our visitors. We would have <lb />
to realize the wisdom of such expert <lb />
advise. <lb />
How does the farmer profit by <lb />
curving all his energies In the <lb />
oping of one particular crop, when <lb />
no sooner has he been paid for <lb />
he will have to help himself of <lb />
all the returns to provide <lb />
himself with living necessities for <lb />
himself, family and animals that help <lb />
him raise the special crop <lb />
There Is nothing on earth, <lb />
illy that could not be grown In Pitt <lb />
county, yet when it comes to the <lb />
we have to depend on ship- <lb />
from other states for many <lb />
things. And naturally we must ship <lb />
o these states the necessary money <lb />
o bring those shipments to us. And <lb />
Just how long we will have to go on <lb />
our energies translated <lb />
into money for necessities that we <lb />
ourselves produce left en- <lb />
with the farmer. Farming Is <lb />
backbone of the whole country, <lb />
but the fact Is even more evident In <lb />
case. We do depend on <lb />
liked to put them up in a big <lb />
modern hotel, but perhaps <lb />
when they bring their <lb />
lies next time, we will be in a <lb />
to do it. We sincerely hope so <lb />
We will show them one of the <lb />
court houses in this part of the <lb />
try, and they will be shown over as <lb />
imposing a temple of learning as id <lb />
the privilege of any town to possess <lb />
when we take them over the Train <lb />
school. This will take place to- <lb />
night Tomorrow morning we will <lb />
drive them over the prettiest and <lb />
most fertile land In North Carolina <lb />
We, In the name of the town of <lb />
Greenville, welcome the visitors to <lb />
our midst. <lb />
FIRE FACILITIES. <lb />
was early this morning <lb />
visited by fire and again the necessity <lb />
of better fire fighting facilities <lb />
demonstrated. A citizen who happen- <lb />
ed to live in the immediate neigh- <lb />
of the place where the fire <lb />
