in the LeBlanc case at 9.30 o'clock, <lb />

change is regarded as favorable to <lb />
the defendant. <lb />

Garment Strikers Obstinate. <lb />
By Wire to The Reflector. <lb />
Chicago, Dec. settlement <lb />
of the garment strike was put off to <lb />
day when the strikers in several <lb />
places refused to even cast ballots on <lb />
the proposition offered by the gar- <lb />
manufacturers. To force e <lb />
vote the union leaders threatened to <lb />
count every one refusing to vote a; <lb />
having voted in the affirmative. The <lb />
strikers are determined to keep up <lb />
the fight for closed shop and <lb />

North Carolina. <lb />
I wish to announce to my friends <lb />
the public, that since the fire <lb />
which destroyed the Peoples <lb />
on Saturday night December <lb />
10th, I will be on the sales and can <lb />
be found at either the Gum or <lb />
warehouses where I shall take <lb />
same interest and strive to the <lb />
most to give my friends and <lb />
the very highest possible price. <lb />
appreciate very much the patron <lb />
and loyal support which the to- <lb />
farmers in this section ha e <lb />
given me during the past season. I <lb />
came to Greenville to build up a per- <lb />
business. That is still my <lb />
intention, and I desire to say. <lb />
effort of mine shall be spared to <lb />
to the farmers that I <lb />
Mate their patronage. <lb />
Mr. Lovelace and Mr. Foxhall have <lb />

Disk or Moldboard Plows <lb />
A correspondent wants to know if <lb />
we would advise the use of a disk <lb />
plow when only two <lb />
animals are available to pull it. <lb />
less the land is light, two horses <lb />
chis weight will not be able to pull <lb />
a disk satisfactorily, and even <lb />
in light land, if the plow is run very <lb />
deep this amount of team force will <lb />
too light. <lb />
The disk plow has certain <lb />
over the moldboard plow, <lb />
for ordinary work a good moldboard <lb />
plow will do as satisfactory work <lb />
The disk will plow land when so <lb />
hard that it could not be plowed with <lb />
the ordinary plow but it takes more <lb />
than two 1,100-pound horses to plow <lb />
this kind of land with a disk. <lb />
The disk is also superior in v , <lb />
ability to turn under large <lb />
ties of trash and where the land is <lb />
full of small roots the disk will do <lb />
work that it would trouble the mold- <lb />
board plow to do. With sufficient <lb />
force the disk plow will probably do <lb />
deep plowing better and less of the <lb />
raw soil will be turned up on top. <lb />
But with only two horses and <lb />
general farm work we would take a <lb />
good two-horse moldboard plow. <lb />

Subscribe to the Reflector. <lb />
the State. <lb />
The of the State con- <lb />
is a problem that <lb />
been exciting the liveliest interest <lb />
discussion in political circles <lb />
soma time past. The report of the <lb />
13th census issued last week ha; <lb />
brought matters to a climax and some <lb />
sort of an agreement as to a re <lb />
alignment of will have to b.- <lb />
reached at an early date. Thought- <lb />
observers and keen students <lb />
events have been pondering the <lb />
over for some time past but a <lb />
vet nothing of a definite nature bar <lb />
been suggested. The most <lb />
review of the figures of the recant <lb />
census for North Carolina will show <lb />
that some kind of re-arrangements of <lb />
counties will have to be made. Al <lb />
lowing for the Increase in <lb />
population to the district, it will be <lb />
seen at once that several of the dis- <lb />
as now constituted will go far <lb />
beyond their allotment, while others <lb />
fall behind. This is noticeable <lb />
the case in fifth, ninth and <lb />
districts, which have made great <lb />
strides forward in population, <lb />
the third, first and second have fallen <lb />
beneath the allotment. And then tie <lb />
aggregate discloses the interesting <lb />
fact that the State will probably re- <lb />
another representative in con- <lb />
which will necessitate eleven <lb />
instead of ten districts. <lb />
The problem that is exciting such <lb />
lively discussion Just now is that of <lb />
the location of the new district a <lb />
the determination of Just what <lb />
ties it And then, too <lb />
there is animated speculation as to <lb />
what counties will be taken away <lb />
from too-populous districts and <lb />
what counties will be added to <lb />
that are too small. The last <lb />
of the State into districts w in- <lb />
made in 1900 or shortly thereafter <lb />
following the report of the h <lb />
census. In this decade that has el- <lb />
some of the districts have <lb />
grown faster than others and <lb />
the imperative demand for <lb />
re-arrangement. <lb />
The greatest gain in population was <lb />
made by the fifth district, which is <lb />
composed of the following count-s <lb />
Alamance, Caswell, Durham, Forsyth, <lb />
Guilford, Orange, <lb />
Rockingham. Stokes and Surry. Tho <lb />
aggregate population of these eleven <lb />
counties, according to the thirteenth <lb />
census Just issued, is or 150.- <lb />
above the allowed for <lb />
district representation years ago <lb />
Estimating that the pro figure <lb />
this time will be raised from <lb />
the years ago, to <lb />
for each representative, then the <lb />
fifth district will have above <lb />
the requisite number. On the same <lb />
basis, the ninth district, which in- <lb />
Burke, Catawba Cleveland <lb />
Gaston, Lincoln, . Madison, <lb />
burg, Mitchell and Yancey, with <lb />
population, will have <lb />
too many and the seventh district <lb />
with its population will have <lb />
too many. The eighth district <lb />
will Just escape as its population i. <lb />
or above the pro <lb />
Of particular interest, however, arc <lb />
districting being obligatory, the <lb />
district, the extreme western <lb />
district. The third district has <lb />
only population, which on tho <lb />
basis of for representation, <lb />
falls short by This is not ex- <lb />
however, as according to the <lb />
census of 1900 the population of <lb />
district was only on the basis <lb />
of or approximately <lb />
Likewise the first falls <lb />
short on the new standard and so <lb />
also the second. <lb />
Such being the case and, the re- <lb />
being obligatory, the <lb />
ion is as to what re-arrangement <lb />
counties will follow. It goes without <lb />
laying that the Democratic machine <lb />
make the best re-alignment <lb />
to v the Democratic <lb />
Such being the case it is <lb />
not improbable that some aid will be <lb />
to the eighth and <lb />
some help will be given the tenth. <lb />
Additions will be made to some of <lb />
the eastern counties also to bring <lb />
hem up as near the standard as <lb />
It has been suggested that one <lb />
strong Republican district be formed <lb />
n the west but this idea is not me-t- <lb />
with much favor. <lb />
This matter will be in the <lb />
f a special body whose action when <lb />
will be of <lb />
nary Observer. <lb />

Bolton, England, Dec. <lb />
hundred coal miners were entombed <lb />
today in Colliery by a <lb />
explosion. Five hours after the <lb />
disaster occurred only one had es- <lb />
caped. The mine caught fire from <lb />
the explosion and flames drove back <lb />
the rescuers. A few hours later <lb />
many dead bodies recovered. <lb />
Relief work is rushed as rapidly as <lb />
possible. Whether any will be saved <lb />
Is not yet known. <lb />
There were men in the mine <lb />
and it is believed at least of those <lb />
are dead, may be more. The <lb />

REV. J. H. SHORE PREACHES ON <lb />
CIVIC RIGHTEOUSNESS <lb />
TWO STRONG SERMONS ON SUNDAY <lb />
He Points Out Man's Duty to Got- <lb />
Officers of <lb />
Greenville and In Their <lb />
Stand for Law Observance and <lb />
Urged Their Support. <lb />
There are people In every <lb />
who will argue that it is the <lb />
business of a preacher to preach the <lb />
gospel. That is true. They should <lb />
and do preach the gospel. At the <lb />
same time the preacher who does not <lb />
take interest in the government and <lb />
civic righteousness of the community <lb />
he serves, and fails to instruct his <lb />
people along these lines, is not up <lb />
to the full measure of his duty and <lb />
opportunity. The preacher should <lb />
have an interest in all <lb />
civil, political, educational, and <lb />
affect the welfare of the <lb />
community in which he lives. <lb />
Rev. J. H. Shore, pastor of the <lb />
Methodist church, is one who takes <lb />
interest in these things. He has <lb />
times preached forceful sermons <lb />
along the line of civic righteousness <lb />
and a good effect upon the <lb />
has resulted. He preached two <lb />
such sermons Sunday, using the same <lb />
text for both, therefore unto <lb />
the things which are <lb />
and unto God the things that are <lb />
In these sermons he strong- <lb />
emphasized man's duty to his gov- <lb />
from nation down to mu- <lb />
and the importance of <lb />
men who are clean in character <lb />
and life to administer the affairs of <lb />
government. He-said there is a vast <lb />
difference In a statesman and a more <lb />
politician. Some declare that In <lb />
not vote for men but for <lb />
principles, yet he failed to see how <lb />
principles can be expressed and car- <lb />
out except through men. <lb />
Mr. Shore also referred to <lb />
ed conditions in Greenville that had <lb />
passed under his observation since <lb />
ho came here two years ago,, and <lb />
what lie had been told existed here <lb />
In previous years. He commended <lb />
the course of the mayor and alder- <lb />
men for the. stand they have taken <lb />
toward having the law observed, and <lb />
those newspapers, here and else- <lb />
where, that align <lb />
the forces for civic righteousness. He <lb />
made especial e to the large <lb />
number of North Carolina newspapers <lb />
that will not carry liquor advertise- <lb />
in their columns, and said the <lb />
people should give their support to <lb />
the officers and newspapers that take <lb />
a stand for morality and good gov- <lb />
Good Time to Advertise. <lb />
These are good days for <lb />
advertising. People are trading in <lb />

of this by placing his announce- <lb />
where the people can read <lb />

the number present was considerably <lb />
over a hundred. <lb />
The exercises were opened with <lb />

After this address State Supreme <lb />

remarks. <lb />
Following this there were loud raps <lb />

of the hall and recited <lb />

exercises. This impersonation was <lb />
well done by Mr. W. P. Edwards. <lb />
Then there was a voting contest <lb />
for the best looking lady and the <lb />
man in the hall. Miss Nellie <lb />

It has been observed by the sales- <lb />
man and advertising solicitor, that the h <lb />
larger the business and the more bu- <lb />
engaged the man at the head <lb />
the greater is the courtesy extended. <lb />
It is only the large concern dying <lb />
of dry rot or the small concern that <lb />
isn't growing that receive their call- <lb />
discourteously. <lb />
Have you ever noticed that the <lb />
lows who run most of the big con- <lb />
of the country are the ones who <lb />
always return courteous answers. If <lb />
you address the president of a rail- <lb />
road he will listen attentively and <lb />
make a decent reply. But ask a <lb />
civil question of the cub at the de- <lb />
pot in a country town, you will get a <lb />
smart and flippant reply. Go into a <lb />
big city store and ask for the man- <lb />
ager. He will talk pleasantly and <lb />
give you the desired information. But <lb />
happen to get in the way of the bright <lb />
young fellow who is washing a win- <lb />
and he will hand you a pack- <lb />
age that will make your blood boil. <lb />
But drop around years later and <lb />
the cub in the depot may have ad- <lb />
until he is a brakeman on <lb />
the local freight and the window <lb />
washer will likely be driving one of <lb />
the delivery wagons for the store. <lb />
The presidents of railroads and the <lb />
managers of big concerns are the <lb />
fellows who in the flowery days of <lb />
their youth acquired the habit of re- <lb />
turning soft and courteous answers. <lb />
That is one of the they be- <lb />
come railroad presidents and man- <lb />
agers of big concerns. The cub who <lb />
knows more than the president, and <lb />
the window washer will still <lb />
be polishing glass in the autumn time <lb />
of his Journal. <lb />

MR. REPORT. <lb />
Report Kitchen of <lb />
of the Affairs of His Office. <lb />
Secretary of State J. Bryan Grimes <lb />
has made public his report to the <lb />
governor for the two years ending <lb />
November 1910. The report M <lb />
an interesting document, containing <lb />
much and valuable <lb />
We cannot give the entire <lb />
report here. It treats of public <lb />
lands, supreme court reports, <lb />
roll of registered voters, need <lb />
of administration building, corpora- <lb />
etc. <lb />
Under the head of need of an ad- <lb />
ministration building, the report <lb />
In the report of the secretary of <lb />
state two years, I <lb />
more than a quarter of a <lb />
century each secretary of state has <lb />
called attention to the need of a <lb />
proper place for the storage of the <lb />
many thousands of dollars worth of <lb />
books belonging to the state. The <lb />
books have been placed in piles in <lb />
various rooms about the city and sub <lb />
to damage and danger of many <lb />
kinds. The laws and supreme court <lb />
reports are now stored on the fourth <lb />
floor of the building, in a hall <lb />
feet, for which the state is <lb />
paying a rental of a year. The <lb />
number of books is annually <lb />
and the state should make pro- <lb />
visions for properly caring for the <lb />
same. <lb />
Board of Public Buildings <lb />
added the large room on the third <lb />
floor of the northeast side of the Cap- <lb />
formerly occupied by the <lb />
commissioner, to the rooms of <lb />
the state department, but this is now <lb />
more than full of old manuscript <lb />
journals, laws and valuable <lb />
of many kinds. The secretary <lb />
of state now shares that room with <lb />
the Historical Commission <lb />
erect thereon a modern, up-to-date <lb />
Are proof administration building <lb />
that would meet the needs of the <lb />
state for forty years. These two <lb />
blocks conjoined would then form a <lb />
public square feet, the same <lb />
width as Union Square, on which the <lb />
Capitol <lb />
Under railroads, the following is <lb />

large room on the southwest <lb />
side of the third floor of the capitol <lb />
was some years ago made a part of <lb />
the offices allotted to the department <lb />
of state. This room Is filled with of- <lb />
records, maps, manuscripts, <lb />
priceless documents, old bills and <lb />
acts of the general assembly, etc. <lb />
During sessions of the general as- <lb />
it is used as an enrolling of- <lb />
In the old closets of the capitol <lb />
there are many thousands of valuable <lb />
papers that should be properly filed <lb />
if space permitted. <lb />
is no space in the capitol <lb />
to arrange for the books and <lb />
that are now overflowing every <lb />
department, and a fire proof hall of <lb />
records should be built to care for <lb />
the highly perishable property that <lb />
state has now on hand. Many <lb />
manuscripts, papers, books and his- <lb />
relics would be donated to the <lb />
state if a proper repository was pro- <lb />
for their safe keeping. <lb />
Conditions are now worse and we <lb />
are even more crowded than ever. <lb />
In addition to the building, I <lb />
have rented the second story of the <lb />
Commercial Printing Company's <lb />
building for storage purposes at a <lb />
cost to the state of a month. <lb />
In the cramped surroundings of the <lb />
various offices, the state cannot <lb />
cure as satisfactory and efficient <lb />
vice as would be possible with better <lb />
facilities and more room and more <lb />
up-to-date conveniences. In my <lb />
ion it would be to the advantage of <lb />
our people and an economy for our <lb />

SCHOOL FOR THE <lb />
WEST. <lb />
Mr. W. C. Allen, of Waynesville, <lb />
writes a strong letter to the Raleigh <lb />
News and Observer, urging that the <lb />
coming legislature pass a bill pro- <lb />
for the establishment at some <lb />
suitable point in western North Car- <lb />
of a training school, <lb />
similar to the one in Greenville for <lb />
the eastern part of the State. Mr. <lb />
Allen's argument for such a school <lb />
is right and in keeping with <lb />
advanced when the movement <lb />
was in progress for the establishment <lb />
of this eastern school, that its success <lb />
should be followed by the establish- <lb />
of another In the western part <lb />
of the State. The central school at <lb />
Greensboro, the eastern school at <lb />
Greenville, and the western school <lb />
at some town in that section, are not <lb />
schools for the training of <lb />
teachers than the State needs. The <lb />
people of the west came to the aid <lb />
of the east in establishing the east- <lb />
school, and we -hope there is not <lb />
a single eastern representative in the <lb />
legislature who will vote against es- <lb />
a similar school in the <lb />
west. <lb />

Merchants Journal. <lb />
A Spending Money. <lb />
With only a little money to in- <lb />
vest, you can get only a few things, <lb />
therefore be sure to get the things <lb />
you most need and desire. Compare <lb />
the value to you of the different <lb />
things you can get before deeding <lb />
on any one of them. This is. one <lb />
rule you will to remember, <lb />
and there are two others which I be- <lb />
to be of equal importance. <lb />
The first of these Do tint spend <lb />
all your money. Keep a on <lb />
hand always. There may, of course, <lb />
be times when yon can not do this, <lb />
but, they will be few and between, <lb />
and you never know when you may <lb />
head your money more than do <lb />
at the -repent. <lb />
The other is; Learn to <lb />
between spending and <lb />
investing it, be invest <lb />
pay out your money <lb />
for things to eat or wear or amuse <lb />
yourself with, you are spending it. <lb />
these things bring back j <lb />
financial return When you b <lb />
something which you expect to <lb />
for more money or to help you earn <lb />
more you are investing. II <lb />
took me a long time to learn the <lb />
in these two cases. I <lb />
seen lots of full-grown men who <lb />
seem never to have realized it. <lb />
do not see at all the essential <lb />
for example, In buying a <lb />
suit of clothes to wear out and in bay <lb />
a new plow to enable them to <lb />
make better crops. It is the men who <lb />
realize this difference, and who invest <lb />
part cf their money, so that it will <lb />
help them to make more, who <lb />
ahead. <lb />
Of course, it is just as <lb />
oftentimes, to put money into thing- <lb />
that bring in no return as into those <lb />
that do. It is perfectly proper f <lb />
you to spend money just for pleas- <lb />
But it is a great mistake <lb />
you to spend all money in <lb />
w bat of fie helping <lb />
When Will Humanity Learn <lb />
When will humanity ever be <lb />
firmly impressed with the common <lb />
sense way of putting their money in <lb />
the bank for safe keeping, instead <lb />
aiding it around the house or keep <lb />
ii bulging in pockets The <lb />
lesson has been learned by a great <lb />
number, and are being to <lb />
the enlightened list about daily, but <lb />
there is a wide field for this re <lb />
Id cover. There is certainly <lb />
not in trying to hoard <lb />
by keeping it in house or -in pockets <lb />
and more often there is absolute per- <lb />
danger. Instances where <lb />
money secreted in the home is stolen <lb />
are of frequent occurrence, but it is <lb />
not a rarity to hear of some <lb />
being killed just by reason of ha <lb />
kept large sums of money <lb />
the house. In fact no later than <lb />
yesterday reading public beheld <lb />
of what might be termed a <lb />
wholesome tragedy over in Kansas <lb />
the deed being done by some person <lb />
or persons bent on robbery, and <lb />
went to rob the lions- by reason of <lb />
fact that it had long been <lb />
that the inmates kept largo sums, of <lb />
money In the house. So there was <lb />
a case whore people met death simply <lb />
by their unwise idea of not pitting <lb />
their money in the bank. In lit <lb />
bank it would have been safe, the de- <lb />
would have been drawing in- <lb />
and they would have, in all <lb />
living today-- <lb />
Wilmington Dispatch. <lb />
What Did. <lb />
One Day at a Time. <lb />
It's easy enough to say, <lb />
always in mind, <lb />
sec a fair part of the money <lb />
get is-placed where it will help you<lb />
but every now and then <lb />
some of us get to thinking about all <lb />
the world we've got ahead of us, or <lb />
about some particularly hard thing <lb />
we have to do, and the first thing <lb />
we know we're up <lb />
our vital force in crossing bridges <lb />
before come to them. Some- <lb />
body has said that the thing we <lb />
about the most never happens. <lb />
One of the most helpful things to <lb />
remember when we get to worrying <lb />
over the future is the old fable about <lb />
the clock that got to thinking about <lb />
how many times it would have to tick <lb />
in the days and weeks and months <lb />
and years that were ahead of it. As <lb />
it calculated it all up the thought be- <lb />
came so appalling that the clock <lb />
stopped. Then someone pointed out <lb />
to it that it had to tick only one at a <lb />
time and advised it not to think at <lb />
all about the ticks In the future. The <lb />
clock found that one tick at a time <lb />
was easy, and so resumed its work <lb />
with ease and pleasure. <lb />
So we must remember that we <lb />
have to live only one day at a time <lb />
to meet the problems and difficulties <lb />
of only one day at a time, and when <lb />
we it that way it seems easy <lb />
enough. If we start to living a <lb />
whole month or a whole year in one <lb />
day, to borrowing trouble from the <lb />
future and bringing it back into the <lb />
present in a bunch, of course we'll <lb />
find it hard. If some of us knew <lb />
what we had ahead of us in the years <lb />
to come we should have nervous pros- <lb />
But one day at a time is <lb />
easy enough. <lb />
In some other ways it a good <lb />
plan for us to divide our lives up into <lb />
days and live one day at a time . It <lb />
is a good plan to start out each day <lb />
a to, live up to <lb />
Recently I visited a farmhouse <lb />
that had been treated to just such a <lb />
general line of improvement and the <lb />
results were acquired an <lb />
of so few dollars that I wish <lb />
others could see and appreciate what <lb />
has been accomplished. Originally <lb />
the house was a four-room house, <lb />
two rooms up stairs and two down <lb />
stairs, and for years the kitchen and <lb />
dining room were maintained in an <lb />
old log house in the back yard. The <lb />
housewife had kept up the daily <lb />
round of house work in this <lb />
fashion for forty years, per- <lb />
haps. Tho young people in this farm <lb />
home have felt for some time that <lb />
the best, most strength-saving kind <lb />
of housekeeping could not go on in <lb />
this fashion. No member of the <lb />
felt the out-of-date, hard con- <lb />
more than the son, who is now <lb />
the head of the house. So about this <lb />
season just a year ago, plans were <lb />
drawn for the addition of an up-to <lb />
date kitchen and dining room, with <lb />
porches. The work progressed <lb />
through the winter when farm <lb />
work would permit, and I might add <lb />
this farmer conducts the entire <lb />
farm work without the aid of <lb />
Two delightful, airy, well-fin- <lb />
rooms and two porches are the <lb />
result of the winter's industry. It is <lb />
interesting to note that all the labor <lb />
of construction, the laying of beams <lb />
and rafters, was performed by this <lb />
man of the house, with the aid only <lb />
of two grown sisters. Even the ma- <lb />
involved -in building the <lb />
was accomplished by this <lb />
trained mason and the bricks for the <lb />
chimneys were taken from the old <lb />
original log kitchen. The girls con- <lb />
to that the work of cleaning <lb />
the old mortar from the brick was <lb />
the most disagreeable feature of the <lb />
work. Home-made screens perfect- <lb />
made, beautifully fitted, have also <lb />
been added to the entire lower part <lb />
of the mouse. This transformation of <lb />
the old, Inconvenient farmhouse <lb />
into an up-to-date farmhouse, <lb />
this farmer less than <lb />

Is a goose an animal and does the <lb />
nailing of a goose's foot to a board, <lb />

is being fattened, constitute a viola- <lb />

cruelty to animals This question <lb />
is troubling the Asheville Society <lb />

Animals. Some years ago when <lb />

wrestled with the question, a <lb />

When the farmers go to demanding <lb />
remedial measure it is time to take <lb />
notice. The members of the Farm- <lb />
Union of Mecklenburg are <lb />
circulating the following <lb />
We. the undersigned, petition you <lb />
to enact a law to prevent dogs from <lb />
running at large outside of <lb />
rated towns in Mecklenburg county. <lb />
We remind you that no farm <lb />
are permitted to <lb />
run at even poultry can <lb />
trespass on land, if the owner of said <lb />
land objects. We ask you to have it <lb />
made a misdemeanor for any one to <lb />
permit his dog to run at large and in <lb />
addition to the fine add a penalty of <lb />
to go to the officer securing tho <lb />
conviction. Also require all dogs in <lb />
the county to be listed for taxation <lb />
sheep or hogs are listed. All dogs <lb />
not listed for taxation to be taxed <lb />
three dollars. Make each person who <lb />
harbors a dog the owner of the dog. <lb />
Time was when politicians could <lb />
fool the farmer but since that <lb />
awakening back in 1894, the <lb />
aforesaid politicians have been more <lb />
careful. In fact, time was when the <lb />
farmer, or majority of them, want- <lb />
ed dogs, but they are better <lb />
and it is refreshing to see this move- <lb />
Discussing the petition the States- <lb />
Landmark moved to <lb />
The petition is proper, timely and <lb />
sensible. It ought to be circulated <lb />
in every county In the State. It <lb />
would doubtless secure many sign- <lb />
more than the public gen- <lb />
think. All these years tho <lb />
politicians have run away from a dog <lb />
law, under the idea that the dog is <lb />
held in such esteem that any <lb />
restricting his ancient liberty <lb />
would utterly destroy those <lb />
for it. This was probably true <lb />
in the past. Time was that the prop- <lb />
to prevent stock running-at <lb />
large almost revoked a civil war <lb />
it is yet so where a stock law <lb />
has never been enacted. But where <lb />
the law has been tried people now <lb />
wonder why they ever objected to it. <lb />
For years the Landmark has <lb />
ed that the dog is not near so popular <lb />
as he is generally regarded and that <lb />
a dog law on the lines suggested <lb />
would meet with much, if not general, <lb />
approbation. Sensible people who <lb />
want to keep dogs are willing to keep <lb />
them at home and pay taxes on them <lb />
and have them protected. The class <lb />
who want to keep more dogs than <lb />
they can feed and allow them to run <lb />

at once a nuisance and a <lb />
menace, deserve no consideration. If <lb />
legislators could get away from the <lb />
idea that a dog law is a political per- <lb />
and would consider the question <lb />
from the standpoint of the <lb />
good and common sense, such a law <lb />
would be promptly enacted. But so <lb />
long as the majority of the <lb />
is composed of aspiring <lb />
whose chief concern is their <lb />
own political fortunes, rather than <lb />
the interest of the people, <lb />
wholesome and helpful measures as <lb />
a dog law and others of similar <lb />
will be neglected. <lb />
We do not see why this measure <lb />
should not go through. Certainly, if <lb />
the farmer Is sick and tired of having <lb />
dogs devour his sheep, he should be <lb />
able to get this law enacted. As a <lb />
general thing people in the towns are <lb />
willing, for those having valuable <lb />
dogs do not mind paying tax on them. <lb />
There is no further reason for <lb />
of the legislature being afraid of <lb />
the dog; the farmer is him and <lb />
that should end <lb />

WHAT ONE PITT COUNTY MAN <lb />
HAS DONE SINCE THE WAR <lb />
ETERNAL FITNESS OF <lb />
Mr. J. Farms <lb />
and Bring Ten Times <lb />
Their Original Farm <lb />
Advances Fifty For Cent, in Five <lb />
Years. <lb />
There are people who say there is <lb />
no money in farming, but Pitt <lb />
has a man who has proven quite <lb />
to the contrary. <lb />
Between the of and Mr. <lb />
J. J. one year <lb />
in the civil war, and before the dose <lb />
of that conflict in recognition of hie <lb />
valor he was made captain of a com- <lb />
having the distinction of being <lb />
the youngest commissioned officer in <lb />
the army from North Carolina. Com- <lb />
home at the close of the war he <lb />
clerked for two years and then work- <lb />
ed a year in the shingle business. <lb />
In his father's landed estate <lb />
was sold, and young <lb />
bought it at going in debt <lb />
most of it. Many thought at <lb />
the time he had made a big blunder, <lb />
he had only about to <lb />
and run the farm. His conduct had <lb />
boon such as to merit him all the <lb />
needed, and being possessed <lb />
of plenty of energy and <lb />
he had plain sailing. In the <lb />
course of time he paid for his farm, <lb />
and made much improvement on it <lb />
from year to year. <lb />
He married in 1870, and raising a <lb />
large family was among the other <lb />
good things he did for his county. <lb />
A few years ago Mr. <lb />
house sold this farm for He <lb />
had purchased another small farm <lb />
near his in 1891, paying for it. <lb />
He kept this, improved it, and worked <lb />
It until this year, and sold it re- <lb />
for In he bought <lb />
the famous Avon plantation for <lb />
and he sold this also on the 15th <lb />
inst., for This leaves him <lb />
with one small farm yet, and for that <lb />
he has been offered ten times its or- <lb />
cost. <lb />
When he was actively engaged in <lb />
farming, his tobacco crop alone for <lb />
many years was from to <lb />
acres. He Lamed successfully, <lb />
knew how to manage his hands, and <lb />
in Laving good buildings for <lb />
his tenants. <lb />
After he came into Governor <lb />
Kitchin appointed Mr. Laughing- <lb />
superintendent of the State <lb />
prison and State farms, these g <lb />
under one department of the State <lb />
government. We see by his <lb />
report that he has practically <lb />
doubled the earnings of the farms, <lb />
and has made more improvement in <lb />
buildings and teams than made <lb />
in ten years previous. He is now <lb />
putting the and hopes to <lb />
have the farms in extra line <lb />
by tho expiration of another <lb />
year. <lb />

no mistake-when he Mr. Laugh- <lb />

lived for a great many years <lb />
in New England, end I always <lb />
used to tell my friends up there <lb />
that the Yankee was the laziest man <lb />
on earth. My argument to prove this <lb />
proposition was somewhat as <lb />
The Yankee hates work. He ways <lb />
gets a machine or a horse to do every <lb />
thing possible that can save him from <lb />
doing unnecessary work, and he <lb />
always devise an easy way of doing <lb />
things if he can to avoid a hard way <lb />
of doing it. <lb />
-The Yankee found that in scrub- <lb />
bing the floor his wife had to get <lb />
down on her knees, and put her hand <lb />
in a bucket of cold water, the result <lb />
being much backache, and also, red, <lb />
rough, disagreeable hands. With his <lb />
natural and inborn laziness he <lb />
devised a machine by which <lb />
one could put the mop at the end of <lb />
a stick and have an on <lb />
the bucket to squeeze out the mop <lb />
without stooping down, so that the <lb />
scrubbing of the floor can now be <lb />
done with very little labor. This <lb />
again shows their inborn desire to <lb />
avoid labor, which is one of the great <lb />
blessings of man. In fact, as one <lb />
looks around and these devices <lb />
for lessening labor, I think it will <lb />
be discovered that in almost every <lb />
case they were Invented by the lazy <lb />
Yankee, who wishes to avoid work <lb />
entirely, if possible, and put it off on <lb />
horses and machinery, at least to <lb />
make it extremely easy. <lb />
The Yankee even puts a comfort- <lb />
able seat on his plows and cultivators <lb />
He goes so far as to cultivate two <lb />
or three rows at a time. What a pity <lb />
it is that he does not follow the man- <lb />
fashion of walking after a <lb />
horse and sharing this healthy labor <lb />
him. lazy methods fail to <lb />
develop his muscles and may event- <lb />
lead to indigestion, feeble men- <lb />
tally and an early death. <lb />
If one believes in the nobility of <lb />
work should he not pity those who <lb />
try to avoid it so industriously, and <lb />
to make everything so easy that it <lb />
hardly seems like work. <lb />
If one believes in the nobility of <lb />
labor, is it not logical to decide to <lb />
drive as much work as possible to <lb />
men, and not turn over work to the <lb />
noble horse, or the lowly mule. <lb />
surely one's heart must be filled with <lb />
pride at knowing that in one of our <lb />
counties where they own a road ma- <lb />
chine they do not use it because, if <lb />
they do it gives work to fewer men. <lb />

Alas how often the mother's sac- <lb />

The first obligation on every soul <lb />

That a man in the bottom of a <lb />

Love to be careful, and were getting <lb />
away from the top of the well when <lb />
the explosion occurred. Though the <lb />
well was feet deep, masses of rock <lb />
were hurled out of the top, and one <lb />
went through a large plank at the <lb />
top. The men above had no idea <lb />
but their companion below had been <lb />
blown to atoms but he called to them <lb />
to take him out. He had be <lb />

Electricity Is His Hired Man and <lb />

K. E. Miner lives on a farm near <lb />
Falls. Oneida county, New <lb />
fork. When ho moved to the farm <lb />
noticed that creek, if <lb />
a six-foot He <lb />
built a dam, and put in a waterwheel <lb />
a turbine that yielded twenty- <lb />
five horse-power. Over the water <lb />
wheel he built a power house in <lb />
which he placed a dynamo for tin <lb />
water wheel to run. The electricity <lb />
was wired 1,700 feet to the farm <lb />
buildings. <lb />
Mr. Miner had imagination. He <lb />
his to work in every <lb />
place about the premises. <lb />
and lighted the house <lb />
lammed at a certain place, would <lb />

did the washing and iron- <lb />

with electricity; beat <lb />
it three different speeds, <lb />
electricity; turned the ice cream free- <lb />
with electricity, and, In summer <lb />
ventilated the house with electric <lb />
fans. <lb />
Nor is that all. Electricity, work- <lb />
through a vacuum milking ma- <lb />
chine, milks twenty cows, two at a <lb />
time; drives the cream <lb />
churns; pumps water into every <lb />
in the house and into the stall of each <lb />
and cow; drives lathes and <lb />
drills in workshop; drives a circular <lb />
saw to cut cord-wood; drives an en- <lb />
silage cutter. The water wheel and <lb />
the dynamo run weeks at a time <lb />
without attention. Rather than be <lb />
bothered to go to the wheel-house <lb />
and shut off the water, Mr. Miner <lb />
installed a device that causes the <lb />
current, when not In use, to enter <lb />
coils, from which it is <lb />
dissipated In the form of <lb />

By Wire to The Reflector. <lb />
Washington, Dec. 21.-The senate <lb />
committee on privileges and elections <lb />
today submitted to the senate the <lb />
evidence taken in the investigation <lb />
of the charge of bribery against Sen- <lb />
and that in their <lb />
opinion his title to the seat in the <lb />
senate has not been shown to be in- <lb />
validated by the use or employment of <lb />
corrupt methods or practice. The <lb />
report fully vindicates say- <lb />
if there was any bribery there <lb />
was nothing to show that he knew <lb />
about it, and that if all charged with <lb />
bribery were guilty it would not have <lb />
changed the result. With this con- <lb />
and finding in their report, <lb />
the committee requested to be dis- <lb />

today. <lb />
It requires much time to get a <lb />
contest of the magnitude of The Re- <lb />
under way, and the spread- <lb />
period will continue for some <lb />
. time. During this period little work <lb />
be done by any particular can- <lb />

started in the race, some with four <lb />

months subscription, and some with <lb />
nothing more than determination <lb />

The Reflector Invites a large <lb />
to get started. It feels that it is <lb />
offering a prize list should at- <lb />

It invites as many as feel like con- <lb />
testing for the valuable prizes to <lb />
themselves and become <lb />
candidates. <lb />
There are no obligations attached <lb />
to entering the contest. <lb />
cost nothing, and the prizes <lb />
will cost the winners nothing. A <lb />
candidate cannot possibly lose any- <lb />
thing more than a little time, and, If <lb />
the proper energy is put behind the <lb />
time expended, there is little chance <lb />
to lose this. It Is a friendly <lb />
