Ex-Governor T J. Jarvis was also <lb />
present, and gave a history of the es- <lb />

that was both interesting and <lb />
He referred to the hard and <lb />
faithful work done in getting the <lb />
school located in Greenville and <lb />
pointed numerous obstacles that were <lb />
overcome. <lb />
This school grows better all the <lb />
time, and its excellent work is in- <lb />
spiring. Mention was made at the <lb />
opening of this, the second session, <lb />
of the faculty at that time, but the <lb />
student body has so grown in <lb />
that additions had to made <lb />

who was Mrs Edith Johns Tyson. <lb />
Cotten is wealthy but <lb />
likes the army. He was stationed in <lb />
the coast artillery at Fort <lb />
near Baltimore, when he met the beau <lb />
and rich Mrs. Tyson. Last <lb />
July Mrs Tyson sailed for England <lb />
There was no engagement between <lb />
them. Lieutenant Cotten got leave of <lb />
absence and followed her in a week. <lb />
He courted her so ardently in Eng- <lb />
land that she finally consented to <lb />
marry him. They were married at <lb />
Pun bridge Wells. Lieutenant and <lb />
Mrs. Cotten will go immediately to <lb />

SEPTEMBER TOBACCO SALES. <lb />
Small Decrease but Large <lb />
Increase Price Over Last Year <lb />
Secretary C W. Harvey of the <lb />
Greenville board of trade, <lb />
gives us the following figures of the <lb />
sales of leaf tobacco on the Green- <lb />
ville <lb />
For the month of September 3,416- <lb />
at average price of <lb />
per hundred pounds. <lb />
For August and September com- <lb />
pounds at an aver- <lb />
age price of per pounds. <lb />
For the months of August and <lb />
last year the sales were <lb />
pounds, at an average <lb />
of per hundred pounds. <lb />
These figures show a in <lb />
pounds from last year of <lb />
but an increase in average price of <lb />
per hundred pounds. The small- <lb />
quantity of pounds sold this year <lb />
than last is due to the fact that <lb />
last year the market opened on the <lb />
3rd of August, while this year it did <lb />
not the 18th, two weeks <lb />
later. <lb />

that a short and bitter <lb />

for the insurrectionists, and that <lb />
the army and navy had de- <lb />

the uprising, was brought here today <lb />
by automobile from the frontier. All <lb />
telegraphic communication with Lib- <lb />
son was cut off. Many are reported <lb />
not only in Lisbon, but in <lb />
cities where outbreaks of violence <lb />
occurred <lb />
A wireless report from <lb />
said the warships had hauled down <lb />
their own and raised the flag <lb />
of the republic, mid then bombarded <lb />
the city, The same wireless message <lb />
also says the flag of the republic <lb />
floats above the arsenal barracks and <lb />
other public buildings in Lisbon. The <lb />
fate of Manuel and th Queen <lb />
other is unknown Apparently the <lb />
insurrection was a direct result of <lb />
the murder of Prof. He <lb />
died yesterday after bring shot by a <lb />
lieutenant in the army. The <lb />
revolutionists became frenzied and <lb />
swept the soldiers Joining them <lb />
when they saw the strength of tho <lb />
movement. <lb />

of Portugal, fell into the hands of tho <lb />
revolutionists at p. m yesterday. <lb />
lying Manuel, according to latest <lb />
reports, fled from his palace and <lb />
took on the gun- <lb />

We favor the policy of the <lb />

under proper regulations, to every <lb />
child in school, all necessary <lb />
text-books, <lb />
We view with alarm the sen- <lb />
being manufactured to issue <lb />
bonds to build public roads, and we <lb />
pledge ourselves to oppose bonds for <lb />
any such purposes. <lb />
It is with regret that we <lb />
again call attention to the insufficient <lb />
provision made for the county poor, <lb />
and pledge our united effort to <lb />
cause to be purchased a proper <lb />

citizens, whatever their party <lb />

What effects a mans judgment <lb />
not so much what she knows as what <lb />

The Real Bond Problem. <lb />
says The <lb />
Exchange, great deal said about <lb />
the delay in the part of our road- <lb />
builders in building new <lb />
roads throughout various sections of <lb />
the county. There is some merit in <lb />
these contentions because If the <lb />
money is in hand with which to build <lb />
the roads-, it ought to be put to its in- <lb />
tended use sO that it be of <lb />
vice to the public. But the thing <lb />
which, it seems tO us. should at this <lb />
time call forth more discus- <lb />
is the fact that many Of the roads <lb />
which have been constructed at con- <lb />
public expense are being <lb />
permitted -o go to ruin for lack of <lb />
attention. It is a fact that some of <lb />
the roads of Scotland county which <lb />
have been considered among our best, <lb />
have been in so great need of repairs <lb />
for so long a time that they have be- <lb />
come practically to the county <lb />
and before they can be good <lb />
roads again it will be necessary to re- <lb />
build a great part Of <lb />
We feel that The Exchange Is far <lb />
from the importance of <lb />
this point when it calls It real <lb />
road The best of good <lb />
roads is, under modern conditions of <lb />
traveling, by no means on eternal <lb />
unless it Is looked after <lb />
with the greatest diligence. It is of <lb />
great importance that the people of <lb />
North Carolina be thoroughly <lb />
ed to the necessity of constructing <lb />
highways in every direction, and we <lb />
believe the progress which is being <lb />
furnishes the soundest basis for <lb />
gratification. It Is of at least equal <lb />
importance that they should be keen- <lb />
alert to the necessity of main- <lb />
these highways at the highest <lb />
standard possible, and the thorough- <lb />
with which this phase of the <lb />
question is understood is a matter <lb />
speculation the proceeds from <lb />
a bond asserts The Exchange, <lb />
used in the building of good <lb />
roads It will prove in the end a waste <lb />
of money unless the roads are cared <lb />
tor and not permitted to <lb />
The enthusiasm which Is so <lb />
able throughout the State just now <lb />
should not be allowed to confine itself <lb />
exclusively to the driving of new <lb />
routes of communication. The move- <lb />
is spreading every month and <lb />
now is emphatically the for <lb />
encouraging the of North <lb />
Carolina in the habit of looking at the <lb />
subject of roads from the broad- <lb />
est standpoint To this end the doc- <lb />

Prediction That it Will be The Worst <lb />
Since <lb />
Weather predictions are Interest- <lb />
hit or miss. Mr. James Abbott, <lb />
of Greensboro, a man whose business <lb />
keeps him out doors the year round, <lb />
has been hitting it very well on what <lb />
the winters bring forth. Last <lb />
he made a bet of a suit of <lb />
clothes that there would not be a fall <lb />
of snow as much as three inches all <lb />
winter. He won. Last week he <lb />
wanted to wager a bet with the same <lb />
man but he declined. <lb />
However, he made this prediction, <lb />
and I'm standing by It to That <lb />
the coming winter will be the worst <lb />
1857. This will do as a starter, <lb />
this was the worst winter ever, <lb />
with snow on top of snow each from <lb />
one to four feet deep on a level. Mr. <lb />
Abbott puts down that there will be <lb />
at least six snows of six inches deep <lb />
each before the birds sing again next <lb />
spring. This is quite enough, but <lb />
six snows only six inches deep will <lb />
compare with the winter of <lb />
However, It is it will not be <lb />
worse than six inches, even if <lb />
there should be six <lb />

study follows the of <lb />

the fact that Messiah at his <lb />
Second Advent, before appearing to <lb />
the world in power and great glory <lb />
and in the time of trouble, will be <lb />
present amongst his consecrated <lb />
and many of them will know of <lb />
his or In this <lb />
time. He will do amongst them a <lb />
judging their rewards <lb />
In proportion to their faithfulness. It <lb />
is well that we keep In memory the <lb />
difference between the parable of the <lb />
pounds and the parable of the talents. <lb />
Both represented money. But a talent <lb />
is sixty times as valuable u pound. <lb />
In the parable of the pound each <lb />
ant got one pound, but in the parable <lb />
of the talents the numbers given <lb />
In some respects all of God's <lb />
people have one common footing and <lb />
common privilege of service. <lb />
by the pound. In another re- <lb />
their opportunities, privileges <lb />
and advantages vary, as represented <lb />
In the present study, the parable of <lb />
the talents. <lb />
This is another parable of the King- <lb />
The Great Teacher himself went <lb />
Into the far country, even heaven; but <lb />
before departing he delivered unto his <lb />
servants certain blessings, privileges, <lb />
each according to <lb />
his several The beginning <lb />
of this parable was in the days of the <lb />
Apostles when Jesus ascended up on <lb />
high and at Pentecost shed forth in <lb />
the Father's name the holy spirit, com- <lb />
a blessing upon each one <lb />
of his followers, as represented In the <lb />
talents and opportunities of each fol- <lb />
lower. AH through this Gospel Age <lb />
these servants have been making more <lb />
or less use of their privileges and more <lb />
or less wisely exercising themselves to <lb />
serve the Master. Some traded with <lb />
their talents, or used them in preach- <lb />
teaching, etc. And others hid <lb />
them In the earth, perhaps under cares <lb />
and responsibilities. After a long time <lb />

Servants, except the consecrated. <lb />
Christian people we are <lb />
now in the time when the servants of <lb />
the Lord are rendering up their ac- <lb />
counts, and when he is to some, <lb />
and faithful servant; <lb />
enter thou the joy of thy <lb />
and when he is saying to others. <lb />

take ye a way. therefore, the talent <lb />

hath the ten All of this test- <lb />
and rewarding of the servants of <lb />
Christ is manifestly prior to any out- <lb />
ward manifestation of the King in his <lb />
glory, because the worthy ones are to <lb />
share with the Master in his glorious <lb />
manifestation and this testing must <lb />
demonstrate the worthy in ad- <lb />
of the revelation in glory. <lb />
The one who had received five <lb />
and used them wisely, <lb />
faithfully, loyally, doubled them <lb />
and was invited to share the Mas- <lb />
joy and glory. His reward <lb />
be to sit as a ruler of many. In other <lb />
words, the service of the present life <lb />
is but Insignificant one in <lb />
son to the glorious service which awaits <lb />
the Lord's faithful people in the <lb />
they shall sit with Messiah <lb />
in his Throne and. as king and priests, <lb />

world. approval of the one who <lb />
was two talents and who was <lb />
equally faithful, was In equally kind <lb />
and benevolent terms. Ho also was <lb />
a good and faithful servant over a <lb />
few things; he also would be set as <lb />
a ruler over many things; he also <lb />
might enter into the joy of his Lord. <lb />
The servant who failed to use his <lb />
was branded as wicked and sloth- <lb />
He knew in advance that the <lb />
was given him for use and because <lb />
he had professed to be n faithful <lb />
ant. His failure to use the talent <lb />
proved him disloyal, unfaithful. He <lb />
lost the talent. It is not for us to soy <lb />
that the Lord will have no blessing <lb />
for that unfaithful servant. He was a <lb />
servant all the time. He respected the <lb />
talent He did not lose it. But he <lb />
did not use it properly. He seems to <lb />
represent a very similar class to the <lb />
one described in our study of n week <lb />
ago as the foolish virgins. This class <lb />
will fail to get into the glories of the <lb />
Kingdom, but will surely get Into the <lb />
time of trouble and its outer dark- <lb />
disappointment and chagrin, with <lb />
which this Age will end and the New <lb />
Age be ushered in. The Lord grant <lb />
that this lesson may help some of the <lb />
Lord's consecrated servants to be more <lb />
helpful, more careful. In the use of <lb />
their consecrated talents, that they <lb />
may glorify the Lord and hear his <lb />
in the end <lb />
One difficulty with many of us <lb />
the past has been fear of the Master. <lb />
We should have gotten better ac- <lb />
with him. We should have <lb />
learned more respecting his real, true <lb />
character and his purposes. If now <lb />
the eyes of our understanding are open- <lb />
if now we are seeing the beauty <lb />
of our talents and privileges of service <lb />
as never before, let us quickly dig the <lb />
talent out and wash it free from all <lb />
soil of the earth and use it earnestly, <lb />
zealously, vigorously, for the praise of <lb />
our King, redeeming the time, know- <lb />
that the days are unfavorable. <lb />
Even now we may show our Lord that <lb />
we are getting awake to the great <lb />
privilege enjoyment of being his <lb />
servants and mouthpieces and that <lb />
we will delight, at any cost, to show <lb />
forth the praises of who has <lb />
called us out of darkness Into his mar- <lb />

Of the three the latter is the only <lb />
one that the average city man knows <lb />

principles that apply to any line of <lb />
business hold good on the farm. Com- <lb />
sense and a fair amount of <lb />

to success hi handling the <lb />

There remain the art and the sci- <lb />
For a young man undoubtedly <lb />
the best place to science <lb />
of farming is in a school or college <lb />
The agricultural college- offers the <lb />
most complete course of instruction <lb />
along this line. A considerable share <lb />
of the enrollment at the agricultural <lb />
college is made up of city boy who <lb />
are there to learn the science of farm- <lb />
I have known many of these <lb />
college made city <lb />
that would have shocked the <lb />
practical man of the past generation <lb />
Into Insensibility. I have known many <lb />
of to go to farming or to follow <lb />
line of work closely related to <lb />
farming, and I have yet to sec the <lb />
first failure. <lb />
A college education means a <lb />
cost in both lime and money. <lb />
The city man who wants to turn farm- <lb />
seldom has a very large supply of <lb />
the latter. To such men the secondary <lb />
courses In agriculture, or <lb />
make a special appeal, A <lb />
short course of a year or two years In <lb />
one of these schools will go a long <lb />
way toward grounding the city farmer <lb />
In the principles of scientific <lb />
Even such a course Is <lb />
for the greater share of the city <lb />
men who set the opportunities of farm <lb />
life and would like to become farmers. <lb />
The next best thing is a course of <lb />
home study. A number of agricultural <lb />
colleges offer correspondence courses <lb />
in agriculture, by means of which the <lb />
science of agriculture can be learned <lb />
quite thoroughly. there are a <lb />
great number of experiment station <lb />
and government bulletins which may <lb />
be had for the asking. There <lb />
many good books on agriculture in its <lb />
various branches. Last, but by no <lb />
means least, there Is the Agricultural <lb />
press. Much of the advancement that <lb />
has been made in agriculture's due to <lb />
the agricultural papers. They stand <lb />
for all that is best and most <lb />
in rural life, and they contain a <lb />
fund of information on methods of <lb />
farm practice that arc invaluable to a <lb />
beginner. <lb />
There yet remains the art of farm- <lb />
is, tho art of handling the <lb />
plow, of caring for the horses, of feed- <lb />
the cows, of regulating the ma- <lb />
and the thousand and one <lb />
things that the farmer must know <lb />
how to do. The only way the art of <lb />
farming can he learned Is by <lb />
The best way for the city man <lb />
with limited capital to learn is to hire <lb />
out to some good farmer by the month. <lb />

always glad to get faithful men at <lb />

of them arc ll house <lb />
garden to for the sake of <lb />
one a family. <lb />
spending a year or word- <lb />
for some one else the be <lb />
farmer will have a fairly good idea of <lb />
the art of farming. If he has been <lb />
putting in his spare moments studying <lb />
he will have a fair understanding of <lb />
the science of farming. His own com- <lb />
sense and the training he has re- <lb />
In town will fit him to handle <lb />
the business end. lie Is now In a <lb />
v. <lb />
work Tor himself. He will have <lb />
something from his wages while on the <lb />
farm, and he probably had a little <lb />
money saved up before. Then comes <lb />
the question of whether to buy or to <lb />
rent A good many beginners In farm- <lb />
make the mistake of tying all their <lb />
capital up in land and having <lb />
left for stock and equipment. In <lb />
order to make the farm pay the farmer <lb />
must have plenty of working capital. <lb />
It is usually better to rent for a few <lb />
years until enough money has been <lb />
saved to make a fair payment on the <lb />
land. Then a farm can be bought <lb />
without robbing the equipment fund. <lb />
The question of where to locate is an <lb />
important one and one which the con- <lb />
mass of evidence makes hard <lb />
to decide. The Irrigated districts of <lb />
the west offer some of the best <lb />
to be found anywhere. The <lb />
country is new. and settlers <lb />
come. Land Is high, but It does not <lb />
take much of It to yield a good living. <lb />
The dry farming districts of the <lb />
west have been loudly boomed. This <lb />
dry farming land can be bought very <lb />
cheaply. It costs little to get a start. <lb />
At the same time the man who goes <lb />
on a dry farm must remember that <lb />
only half of his land will yield a <lb />
crop each year, sometimes not <lb />
than a third of it. The principle <lb />
dry farming is to cultivate the lam <lb />
for a year or two without sowing a <lb />
crop. This prevents the rain <lb />
falls from evaporating, and by the <lb />
second or third year enough moisture <lb />
will have been stored up to raise a <lb />
crop. No one should think of going <lb />
on a dry farm without having enough <lb />
money laid by to pay expenses for <lb />
two or three years without any in- <lb />
come. Dry farming means many <lb />
losses and much discouragement, but <lb />
the success of many dry farmers <lb />
proves that It offers opportunities to <lb />
the man who has the courage to stick. <lb />
The fertile lauds of the middle west <lb />
have been little advertised of late, and <lb />
many people are of the opinion that <lb />
this part of the country is already <lb />
fully settled. This Is far from being <lb />
tho case. The Mississippi valley could <lb />
support four or five times its present <lb />
farming population with ease. Laud <lb />
is high, but it Is worth the price. The <lb />
middle west offers the advantage of <lb />
progressive neighbors, good churches, <lb />
schools and colleges and modern con- <lb />
if every sort. There <lb />
thousands of chances for the city man <lb />
in this section. <lb />
In the east probably the best <lb />
found in truck farming. <lb />
Only small tract of land Is required, <lb />
and the returns are large. <lb />
The abandoned farms of Eng- <lb />
land can purchased very cheaply. <lb />
They can never he made as <lb />
as the lands farther west, but under <lb />
proper treatment the fertility can be <lb />
restored a very comfortable profit <lb />
secured from them. <lb />
The agricultural opportunities the <lb />
south have been little advertised, yet <lb />
there no section of the country <lb />
where the opportunities of <lb />
farmer are greater. Diversified farm- <lb />
and stock raising a <lb />
new thing in this section. The <lb />
men who are growing less cotton <lb />

The bulletin just mentioned calls <lb />

Some protests from influential <lb />

Too Frequently Congested by Potty <lb />

The superior court C are be- <lb />

small and frivolous eases which <lb />
should never reach The <lb />
of our superior courts is <lb />
taken up with cases that should Live <lb />
been settled in the magistrate's court, <lb />
or, better should never have <lb />
been instituted. These little cases in <lb />
the superior court pile up <lb />
cost against the people and often the <lb />
important eases must be postponed <lb />
and dragged from court to court. This <lb />
is not only the case in tut in <lb />
most of the other counties. The <lb />
same condition existing in <lb />
county. There is something wrong <lb />
somewhere of the court dockets would <lb />
not be crowded with these frivolous <lb />
prosecutions. The biggest fault <lb />
ably lies with justices of the peace. <lb />
Most of These cases could be settled <lb />
easily by the right sort of justices of <lb />
the peace. Very few people are fit <lb />
to be justices, and under the present <lb />
system of purchasing political support <lb />
with offices, even the few fit persona <lb />
rarely get to be justices. The people <lb />

Of Judge Harry W. Whedbee, who <lb />

the Wilmington Star <lb />
Whedbee has impressed the <lb />
members of the bar and all others in <lb />
attendance upon court, as one of the <lb />
most able judges who have presided <lb />
over court in this county, and the <lb />
rapidity with which he dispatches <lb />
business is a subject of much favor- <lb />
able comment. Deputy Clerk of <lb />
court W. H. Harris stated last <lb />
night that the criminal side of the <lb />
docket was the nearest clear that he <lb />
had known It in the five years he has <lb />
been in the <lb />
From Slit Hands to the Great <lb />

at which horses were sold, and <lb />

old-time horseman something out- <lb />
but they all went like hot <lb />

with a bit of saddling breeding in <lb />
them that were anything but good- <lb />
looking, brought and <lb />

An auction sale of Shetland <lb />
was held under the auspices of <lb />
the Shetland Pony Association, <lb />
a dozen members contributing <lb />
ponies. These men did not put <lb />
the pick of their farms in the sale, but <lb />
notwithstanding this the average price <lb />
was over <lb />
horses are selling still <lb />
higher, a pair of gray grade <lb />
realizing a short time <lb />
ago. These prices hold good all <lb />
over the country and are not <lb />
ed to any particular breed of hors- <lb />
es. Any useful kind of animal brings <lb />
much more money than he would have <lb />
brought years ago, and you cannot <lb />
look at any of the better individuals <lb />
of the fashionable breads without <lb />
being Staggered at the prices asked. <lb />
A number of polo ponies were sold In <lb />
New York the other day the rough <lb />
and realized exceptionally good prices, <lb />
and so it is all down the line. <lb />
Of course, the automobile is usurp- <lb />
a great deal of the work that is <lb />
done In the large cities, and has also <lb />
done away with a tremendous lot of <lb />
horses for fashionable driving <lb />
es, but except, in the of <lb />
non-horsey people and for those whose <lb />
business requires rapid conveyance <lb />
from place to place, will right itself <lb />
as time goes on. <lb />
In England, although the trade in <lb />
automobiles is booming, a great many <lb />
ladies are returning to carriages for <lb />
afternoon calls and for driving in the <lb />
parks. There has not yet been a <lb />
marked increase in the purchase of <lb />
carriages, but this is largely due to <lb />
the fact that fashionable people have <lb />
still a variety of conveyances which <lb />
they have not sold and which they <lb />
are now beginning to use again. <lb />

only way to get commercial fertilizers <lb />
at reasonable prices is to adopt the <lb />
Union policy of home-mixing. If the <lb />
farmer provides cotton seed mod as <lb />
the source of nitrogen he will rave <lb />
no difficulty in getting the phosphate <lb />
and potash. The fertilizer trust has <lb />
adopted the plan of buying up the <lb />
dried blood, etc., to defeat <lb />
the farmers in their determination to <lb />
the business method of <lb />
and last year those who sold <lb />
their cotton seed for cash were put to <lb />
a great deal of trouble in getting a <lb />
ingredient as a source <lb />
gen and many were compelled to <lb />
choose either between the expensive <lb />
ready-mixed brands of fertilizers or <lb />
the abandonment of the use of <lb />
containing nitrogen. Speaking <lb />
to the farmer, it have the <lb />
control of the cotton seed now. If <lb />
you sell that for cash the trust gets <lb />
control of the meal. When you get a <lb />
Ion or more of meal for a ton of <lb />
seed, by all means make the exchange <lb />
if you get more meal on band than <lb />
you need, you can sell it at a big pro- <lb />
lit next spring. Get. ready for home- <lb />
mixing by getting of some <lb />
cotton seed meal This is only <lb />
sane and sensible course to take. It's <lb />
only way to fortify yourself <lb />
against the trust method of covering <lb />
the ingredients from which nitrogen <lb />
obtained in commercial fertilizers <lb />
you get the meal you'll be <lb />
pendent If you find later on <lb />
or dried blood can be <lb />
used more economically in your mix- <lb />
lure than cotton seed meal you can <lb />
easily make the change with a sure <lb />
profit on year cotton meal. Again <lb />
we urge strongly upon Union men <lb />
the importance of getting possession <lb />
of some cotton seed meal by <lb />
seed for Chronicle. <lb />

Decision In Case of New Bern Alder- <lb />
men Has Far-Beaching Effect <lb />
The Supreme court handed down <lb />
last week, in the case of state <lb />
Williams, from Craven county, a <lb />
most important decision affecting <lb />
State, county, and municipal gov- <lb />
The of 1905. <lb />
section provides as <lb />
person, appointed or elect- <lb />
ed a commissioner or director to <lb />
discharge any trust wherein the <lb />
State or any county, city or town, <lb />
may be in any manner interested, <lb />
shall become an undertaker, or make <lb />
any contract for his own <lb />
under such authority, or be in any <lb />
manner concerned or interested in <lb />
making such contract, or in the <lb />
profits thereof, either privately or <lb />
openly, singly or jointly with <lb />
he shall be guilty of a <lb />
This provision was sub- <lb />
enacted in 1825, but <lb />
the law has been <lb />
obeyed or has gone into <lb />
is a matter of <lb />
says the court. <lb />
Mr. Williams was an alderman of <lb />
the city of New Bern, and also <lb />
president and stockholder in the <lb />
New Bern Iron Works, and was con- <lb />
of violating the law given <lb />
above. A contract was entered into <lb />
between the city of New Bern and <lb />
the Iron Works, but Mr. Williams <lb />
took no part In the making, audit- <lb />
or paying of the contract. Judge <lb />
Brown, in the opinion for the <lb />
court, says, we are <lb />
glad to concede that there is no <lb />
of moral turpitude upon the <lb />
part of the defendant, we cannot <lb />
concur with his counsel that a find- <lb />
to that effect is necessary to <lb />
conviction, and that the act does <lb />
not extend to officer of a <lb />
when the dealing is be- <lb />
tween the corporation and the mu- <lb />
The court does not decide the <lb />
question whether a person who Is <lb />
merely a stockholder of a company <lb />
dealing with a municipality of which <lb />
he is an officer would be guilty of <lb />
violating this law, because in the <lb />
present case Mr. Williams was <lb />
dent and director and also man- <lb />
ager of the department <lb />
of the shop of the Iron Works, as <lb />
well as city alderman. <lb />
The court further decides that it <lb />
is immaterial whether the defend- <lb />
ant had actual knowledge of the <lb />
transaction, occupying the <lb />
official position he did, the law <lb />
will hold him to a knowledge of the <lb />
transaction and the fact that he <lb />
retired from the meeting <lb />
When the bill was presented and <lb />
paid is also immaterial <lb />
Again, the court decided that it <lb />
is not necessary that the defendant <lb />
directly profit by the contract the <lb />
fact that he occupied a public office, <lb />
also an official of the company deal- <lb />
with the city makes him guilty <lb />
of violating the law. <lb />

Those who visited the fall <lb />

mil art. There was the <lb />
est and most attractive display of <lb />
hats that have been shown here in <lb />
any season, and they ere of the very <lb />
latest models and styles. The opera <lb />
caps, Hindu caps, feather turbans <lb />
white beavers, and the. Persian and <lb />
tapestry trimmings were certainly <lb />
beautiful, and the various Varieties <lb />

There are hats and hats, but they <lb />
alone do not make up the beauty of <lb />
woman's adornment. So at Pulley <lb />
Bo wen's opening fall display today <lb />
there were not alone the very newest <lb />
designs in trimmed hats of all shapes <lb />
but also an array of elegant silk <lb />
dresses and tailor-made suits that <lb />
would do credit to a city store. This <lb />
enterprising firm knows the needs of <lb />

Health Is Worth Saving, and Some <lb />
Greenville People Know How <lb />
to Save It <lb />
Many Greenville people take their <lb />
lives in their hands by neglecting the <lb />
kidneys when they know or- <lb />
need help. Sick kidneys are re- <lb />
for a vast amount of suffer- <lb />
and ill health, but there Is-no <lb />
need to suffer nor to remain in <lb />
when all diseases and aches and <lb />
pains due to weak kidneys can be <lb />
quickly and permanently cured by the <lb />
use of Kidney Pills. The fol- <lb />
lowing statement leaves no ground <lb />
for doubt. <lb />
Mrs S. A. Simmons. Heritage <lb />

Kidney Pills to be an effective <lb />
remedy for kidney trouble and head- <lb />

A Wild Exploit. <lb />
A singular character was the spend- <lb />
thrift James Rhodes, who flung <lb />
up and down the Great White Way, <lb />
In York, for months. His crown- <lb />
exploit occurred In London, where <lb />
he went to finish a spree. Rhodes <lb />
dropped into the Prince of Wales the- <lb />

From his box he ordered the leader to <lb />

awhile. When, a little later, he re- <lb />

what he says about factories will es- <lb />

been twenty since I left there, <lb />
and I saw more of the place last <lb />

could hardly realize the changes that <lb />
had taken place and am sure I would <lb />
get lost if I should try to find some <lb />

them the old Greenville college and <lb />
other places where some of my good <lb />

Reflector, which has done so <lb />
much for all these improvements, <lb />
should feel duly proud of the results <lb />
of its efforts, and the people should <lb />
show their appreciation, as I am sure <lb />
they do and always will by liberal <lb />
patronage in every way. I notice you <lb />
