SOME FACTS ABOUT RALEIGH. <lb />
Now Down to Regular Work of the <lb />

Everything Is now moving smooth- <lb />
on the second of East <lb />

of registrations and class <lb />
incident upon the <lb />
few days of a session have all been <lb />
completed, and the students have en- <lb />

work of the school year. <lb />
It is certainly an Inspiration to see <lb />
the school, especially when all gather- <lb />
ed in one body for chapel exercise. <lb />
It was our pleasure to see them <lb />
this morning, and the two hundred <lb />
young ladies and twenty young men <lb />
there made a picture not soon for- <lb />
gotten. After the formal exercises <lb />
conducted by President Wright and <lb />
some explanation of classes, he in- <lb />

here in school a good foundation upon <lb />
which to build their life work. He <lb />

Her Chamber of Commerce Pushing <lb />
the State Capital Forward. <lb />
A very attractive leaflet is issued <lb />
by the Raleigh chamber of commerce <lb />
-ad industry concerning the Capital <lb />
City of North Carolina, containing <lb />
information of interest to the <lb />
entire state. Raleigh, like Washing- <lb />

and parks are the property of <lb />
the state. This is the state <lb />
through a commission, selected the <lb />
site and bought the land, laid out the <lb />
streets and parks and sold building <lb />
lots; in two or three cases the same <lb />
family having held the property since <lb />
original sale, years ago. <lb />
in this respect is the most unique <lb />
of all the state capitals. The value <lb />
of the state buildings and their con- <lb />
tents is exclusive of land, <lb />
which is worth more than half mil- <lb />
lion. The leaflet shows the capital <lb />
is growing rapidly, the value of build- <lb />
and street improvements in <lb />
The value <lb />

it was expected, the <lb />
of pastorate here which Rev. <lb />
R. C. Deal announced in the <lb />
church on Sunday, was re- <lb />
with regret by the church and <lb />
people of the community. Mr. Deal <lb />
resigned the church at Kinston a <lb />
week ago, and serving the church <lb />

A Domestic Tragedy. <lb />
There was published in Sunday's <lb />
Journal the old. old of the trust- <lb />
husband, the weak wife and the <lb />
unfaithful friend. The husband was <lb />
compelled in order to earn meat and <lb />
bread for a wife and two little girls, <lb />
to spend the week away from home. <lb />
He took the other man as a boarder <lb />
so that his board money might help <lb />
keep the wolf from the door. He left <lb />
him at his home so that he might <lb />
protect his wife and little ones. <lb />
The rest of the story is so familiar <lb />
that there's no need of telling it. <lb />
The husband came home on Saturday <lb />
night to find even the furniture gone. <lb />
Four lives have been ruined. The <lb />
band, the wife and the two little girls <lb />
will never live to forget the evil day. <lb />
The other man will go his way at <lb />
Journal. <lb />

Truth Is Stronger Than Friction <lb />
A number of papers in this State <lb />
have recently published articles in re- <lb />
to people who, although, <lb />
had lived the cities, had not been <lb />
in town for years. New Bern has <lb />
any of these beat a mile. There is a <lb />
lady who lives within half a mile of <lb />
the court house who has never seen <lb />
the Federal building the <lb />

good health and is not incapacitated <lb />
in any way that would hinder her <lb />

Too Stingy to Take a Paper. <lb />
Tl picture given below may be <lb />
but it points a <lb />
upon a time a farmer <lb />
too economical to take a news- <lb />

J the boy ran over a beehive <lb />

it down and cutting a handful of <lb />

rich cream into a basket of kittens, <lb />
drowning the whole flock. In her <lb />
hurry, she dropped and broke a <lb />

DON'T DRINK. <lb />
Good Advice From Man High up in <lb />
the World. <lb />
Andrew Carnegie is not a pro- <lb />
but he is a believer <lb />
in temperance, as all successful men <lb />
are. He has delivered himself of this <lb />
most interesting and effective homily <lb />
on the subject of <lb />
. first and most seductive peril, <lb />
. and the destroyer of most young <lb />
, is drinking I am no <lb />
lecturer in disguise but a man <lb />
who knows and tells you what ob- <lb />
has proved to him; and I <lb />
say to you that you are more likely <lb />
to fail in your career from acquiring <lb />
the habit of drinking liquor than from <lb />
any or all other temptations likely to <lb />
assail you. You may to almost <lb />
any other temptation and may reform <lb />
may brace up, and. If not <lb />
lost ground at least remain in the <lb />
race, and. secure and maintain a res- <lb />
position But from failure <lb />
caused by the drink habit recovery <lb />
is almost impossible. I have known <lb />
but few exceptions to this <lb />
Andrew Carnegie was a young man <lb />
himself once; he was very poor; he <lb />
had no friends; but he great <lb />
courage of conduct and found out <lb />
early in his career that the <lb />
man who drinks liquor for the pass- <lb />
pleasure it gives. Is the young <lb />
man who will not succeed in the <lb />
affairs of this life. Business men <lb />
whatever their own personal habits <lb />
may be, are not inclined to give re <lb />
employment to the young- <lb />
who are fond of drink. The <lb />
young fellow who starts out with his <lb />
appetite uncontrolled is undone before <lb />
he begins. Substantial people do rot <lb />
trust him; the great industrial <lb />
will not employ him, in <lb />
the vast majority of cases the young <lb />
man who drinks is the young man <lb />
who fails to make any mark in the <lb />
world. <lb />
Carnegie is a wise man; <lb />
he is worth millions of dollars; he has <lb />
given away millions of dollars for <lb />
many charitable purposes, but he <lb />
made a dollar that he owns by <lb />
drinking Times <lb />

About one o'clock on Wednesday <lb />
morning Mrs. Allie Joyner, of Beaver <lb />
Dam township, lost her dwelling <lb />
and kitchen, and practically all <lb />
the contents of both, by Are. Her con <lb />
was first to discover the fire, and he <lb />
barely had time to awoken his aged <lb />
mother and get her out in safety. By <lb />
the time the neighbors could be <lb />
with the ringing of the farm <lb />
bell and reach the scene, the fire had <lb />
so far advanced that practically <lb />
could be saved from the building. <lb />
The fire started somewhere about the <lb />
kitchen, but the cause is unknown. <lb />
Mrs. Joyner's loss is about <lb />
on which she only had insurance <lb />
Notwithstanding her advanced age, <lb />
she being over she takes the loss <lb />
of her home with remarkable <lb />

GOES TO THE FOREIGN FIELD. <lb />
Miss Laura V. Cox Loaves Saturday <lb />
For Mexico. <lb />
Miss Laura V. Cox, of Winterville, <lb />
who has been called to the foreign <lb />
work as a teacher, leaves <lb />
Saturday for Mexico, in <lb />
which field she will labor under the <lb />
direction of the Southern Baptist <lb />
Convention. <lb />
Miss Cox was left an orphan, with- <lb />
out means, in her early girlhood and <lb />
spent the years from that time until <lb />
maturity with relatives, working part <lb />
of the time and attending school as <lb />
opportunity afforded. In this way <lb />
she fitted herself for teaching in the <lb />
public schools and taught a few years. <lb />
She joined the Baptist at an <lb />
early age and very soon thereafter re- <lb />
to give her life to missionary <lb />
work. She was ambitious to obtain <lb />
a thorough education, to equip her- <lb />
self for this work, and her relatives <lb />
recognizing her true worth assisted <lb />
her in going to college. She first at- <lb />
tended the State Normal in Greens- <lb />
for two years, then attended <lb />
College in. Raleigh for three <lb />
years and graduated there with the <lb />
B. A. degree. Last year she took a <lb />
course in the mission teacher training <lb />
department of the Theological Semi- <lb />
nary in Louisville, Ky. In addition <lb />
to her English studies Miss Cox mas- <lb />
several of the languages, <lb />
a specialty of Spanish and goes to <lb />
her work in the foreign field as well <lb />
prepared as any woman the Southern <lb />
Baptist Convention has sent out in <lb />
mission work. Pitt county is proud <lb />
of her, and the prayers and good <lb />
wishes of many people will follow her <lb />
in her labors for the Master. <lb />
The Reflector is glad to state that <lb />
Miss Cox will let her many friends at <lb />
home hear from her occasionally <lb />
through the columns of the paper. <lb />

Good Work of the Young Men's Ch h- <lb />

Chapel Hill, N. C, Sept. The <lb />
University of North Carolina is now <lb />
well started on it's years work <lb />
the students and faculty of the in- <lb />
are once again of <lb />
their debt to the Young Men's Chris- <lb />
Association has taken <lb />
such a prominent part In getting <lb />
things to running. Freshmen more <lb />
than any other people, perhaps have <lb />
a tender feeling for association <lb />
tor it was the information <lb />
which was run by Y. If. C. A. <lb />
which enabled them to see some <lb />
semblance of order in the of <lb />
red tape which seemed to confront <lb />
them their arrival here. <lb />
Tao association had sent each pros- <lb />
new student a hand-book <lb />
the summer, which contained all <lb />
the information that could be com- <lb />
posed into the small space. In regard <lb />
to the new country into which the <lb />
men seemed to themselves to be <lb />
The association engineered <lb />
night, when a macs meeting <lb />
in hall brought together for <lb />
the first time all the new students, <lb />
old and for an intro- <lb />
to the custom and unwritten <lb />
laws of the life of the University com- <lb />
the old men for a noisy cheer <lb />
lug, gathering with everybody clap- <lb />
ping everybody else on the shoulder, <lb />
glad at the realization that he Is <lb />
back. At this meeting talks were <lb />
made by Mr. C. L. Williams on the <lb />
Educational Value of the Literary So- <lb />

and Alms of the <lb />
who is also the <lb />
first scholar of his class and who <lb />
won the medal in debate <lb />
at the last commencement, told of <lb />
what the Bible study groups conducted <lb />
by the association had meant last <lb />
year. The groups had <lb />
men or half of the entire student <lb />
body. A startling attainment of the <lb />
Bible study enthusiasts in the eyes <lb />
of many, was organization and <lb />
year's work of a class which <lb />
consisted of members of tho football <lb />
team only. He told of the various <lb />
ways the association had made itself <lb />
part of the life the college. <lb />
According to its time honored <lb />
tom the association held its welcome <lb />
meeting on the first Sunday of the <lb />
session. Dr. Edwin Professor <lb />
P. H. Winston, Rev. R. W. <lb />
made short talks. Dr. told of <lb />
what the association had meant to <lb />
him In his at Vander- <lb />
and dining tHo. many years he <lb />
bad been a teacher at Trinity College. <lb />
Professor Winston warned the new <lb />
men against five evils which the man <lb />
Who lives the life of the college <lb />
must drunk- <lb />
gambling, Immorality and <lb />
profanity. Mr. the pastor of <lb />
Episcopal church here pointed <lb />
Vary, forcibly the necessity for <lb />
among spiritual <lb />
which he considered more <lb />
than any Other aid one <lb />
which he feared college men <lb />
prone to neglect. The one thought <lb />
ran trough ill of those <lb />
talks was that tho work of the <lb />
should appeal docs appeal <lb />
to the men of the <lb />
body. <lb />

Politicians Know How to Other <lb />
Besides Politics. <lb />
Messrs. E. J. Justice, Andrew Joy- <lb />
W. R. Land and one or two <lb />
Journeyed to Madison Saturday in <lb />
an automobile, where Mr. Justice <lb />
made a speech that woke up the Dem- <lb />
of that county. It was a great <lb />
day. The party arrived in good time, <lb />
but coming back they did nor. have <lb />
such good luck. Some miles beyond <lb />
Stokesdale a tire of the machine <lb />
with a report like a rifle. <lb />
The man in charge knew his business, <lb />
however, and soon repaired it, but it <lb />
would not stick and down it went <lb />
again. Then he solemnly announced <lb />
that they would have to foot it to a <lb />
telegraph office or some phone and <lb />
have another machine sent after <lb />
them. Feathers fell and grew <lb />
solemn, but Just at this Juncture a <lb />
freight train was heard coming up a <lb />
grade, puffing and snorting. <lb />
A wink Is generally as good as a <lb />
nod to a blind horse, but in this case <lb />
Mr. Joyner said to the others <lb />
lame; I'll Hag that <lb />
Freight trains are not permitted to <lb />

he ran and with the aid of two hand- <lb />
kerchiefs he brought the train to a <lb />

Full of sympathy, the conductor <lb />
told him to come ahead and he would <lb />
at least take them to Stokesdale and <lb />
wire for orders. The others were <lb />
called and came limping up, badly <lb />
hurt, of course, and boarded the train <lb />
At Stokesdale permission was obtain- <lb />
ed from Greensboro to bring them on <lb />
to town, where they arrived at seven <lb />
o'clock. <lb />
Not a man was hurt Mr. Joyner, <lb />
however, said the expert who was <lb />
driving the machine came near spoil- <lb />
everything, but when yelled at to <lb />
come on, he started on a run; but <lb />

THE <lb />
Some Men <lb />
Succeeded on the Farm. <lb />
1910, by American Press <lb />
THERE are many millionaire <lb />
farmers, but most of <lb />
have made their millions else- <lb />
where and are I hem <lb />
on rural estates merely to gratify a <lb />
fancy. There are a number of <lb />
however, who have made millions <lb />
farm. It Is not such easy thing <lb />
lo do, but the success of these men <lb />
shows some of the possibilities Hint <lb />
farm holds for the man who de- <lb />
sires to make money in large amounts. <lb />
Probably the most notable of the <lb />
Rim who made fortunes on the <lb />
farm Is David When David <lb />
was married he handed <lb />
preacher his last live dollar bill with <lb />
remark that now ho could start <lb />
square with the world. He bought <lb />
laud time and borrowed money to <lb />
buy cattle. first purchases were <lb />
In Illinois. Later he removed to Mis- <lb />
attracted by the cheap prairie <lb />
land that needed only n little drainage <lb />
to make It yield abundantly. Today <lb />
David owns nearly acres <lb />
of this same Missouri land, and It <lb />
TWO OF THE HARES THAT HELPED TO <lb />
FOB A <lb />
would all sell for an acre. Add <lb />
to this his cattle and horses and ma- <lb />
few Incidentals, such as <lb />
bank and the like, and he has <lb />
a fortune approximating <lb />
This has all made In farming. <lb />
Corn has his specialty, and It has <lb />
always been marketed In the form of <lb />
cattle. He has always used the most <lb />
modern machinery and the best equip- <lb />
that money buy. It has been <lb />
the same with help. His foremen <lb />
men who can get results. He furnishes <lb />
them with automobiles to take them <lb />
from farm to farm because he <lb />
found that It pays In the time saved. <lb />
He attributes his success to close per- <lb />
attention and the application of <lb />
business methods to farming. <lb />
Another man who made millions <lb />
In farming Is Colonel James M. Smith <lb />
of Georgia. Colonel started <lb />
raising corn and on a rundown <lb />
quarter section In county <lb />
soon the war. The first year ho <lb />
lost Last year his net <lb />
were In the meantime his <lb />
has Increased to acres. <lb />
Smith wan one of the <lb />
to build cottonseed oil mills and make <lb />
a profit from what formerly bad been <lb />
a waste product. His farm was <lb />
miles from the neatest railroad, <lb />
but he solved the problem by building <lb />
. railroad of bis own. lie has always <lb />
been personal friend of all his men. <lb />
white and black He pro- <lb />
well equipped schools for both <lb />
and the white children of bis <lb />
employees. Unlike David who <lb />
never bud a school <lb />
cation. W ft college grad- <lb />
learned lo handle men in <lb />
the army, and be applied the same or- <lb />
to his farm work with <lb />
great results. <lb />
Colonel Smith's success has demon- <lb />
what can be done on farm <lb />
laud of the south. One of his <lb />
acre farms a year ago yielded 4.800 <lb />
bushels of wheat and bales of cot- <lb />
The wheat sold for bushel <lb />
and the cotton for a bale, making <lb />
n total Income from farm of <lb />
After taking out expenses <lb />
there was a net profit of acre. <lb />
This might well make even a <lb />
valley farmer envious. <lb />
The west has been heralded as the <lb />
land of opportunity. In the early days. <lb />
when land could be had almost for the <lb />
asking and the cattle business was at <lb />
Its best, a young of the name of <lb />
Henry Miller started out to make a <lb />
fortune In the ranch business. Today- <lb />
he Is worth He once an- <lb />
that he hoped some day to <lb />
own the whole state of California. In <lb />
this be did not succeed, although his <lb />
holdings in California amount to <lb />
acres. He also has large tracts <lb />
of land In Nevada and Oregon. <lb />
The ranch business is the decline <lb />
In west, and what was once one <lb />
man's cattle ranch is now being cut <lb />
up to make farms for the hundreds <lb />
of of land hungry <lb />
who are pouring Into what is still <lb />
land of About <lb />
twenty years ago an Iowa farmer sold <lb />
a half section of land, paid his <lb />
and, with seven or eight thousand <lb />
dollars In cash, a wife and four <lb />
started for Arizona, no located <lb />
in the Salt river valley, bought as <lb />
much of the cheap land as bis money <lb />
would pay for and set out to <lb />
Irrigation farming. lie learned It <lb />
made money. surplus went <lb />
to buy more hind. He Joined the <lb />
Water Users association and was In- <lb />
In getting congress to start <lb />
the Salt river irrigation project. Gov- <lb />
Irrigation Insured permanent <lb />
prosperity for the Salt river valley, <lb />
and today this pioneer farmer who <lb />
set out to make a fortune In <lb />
great American is worth more <lb />
than <lb />
Success in the Irrigated districts Is <lb />
not necessarily measured in extensive <lb />
farms and large bank accounts. A <lb />
few years ago a locomotive engineer, <lb />
sixty years old and broken health. <lb />
moved from Minneapolis to the state <lb />
of Washington, bought an acre <lb />
of irrigated land, paying for It. <lb />
It contained apple orchard In poor <lb />
condition, n house and a few <lb />
outbuildings. The purchase of <lb />
the land took nearly all the old en- <lb />
savings. He pruned the old <lb />
apple trees set out thirty new <lb />
ones. He sold off a few mongrel <lb />
chickens that were on the place and <lb />
bought a pure bred rooster and three <lb />
hens. After the first year's <lb />
were paid he had enough money left <lb />
to put on many improvements. The <lb />
next year he put money In the bank, <lb />
and the year after. So well did the <lb />
acre produce that at the Lewis and <lb />
Clark exposition at Portland in <lb />
It was awarded the prize for the sec- <lb />
most productive and best man- <lb />
aged farm in the west. <lb />
It is instances like this that really <lb />
show the possibilities of the farm for <lb />
the average man. Few men can be- <lb />
come great cattle kings, and not many <lb />
call repeal the success of David Ran- <lb />
or Colonel Smith. Rut the success <lb />
of the old engineer on his one acre of <lb />
irrigated term land ought to be so <lb />
hard to duplicate. <lb />
There are who say land Is so <lb />
there Is lit lie chalice for the <lb />
man capital lo gel H start. <lb />
Notwithstanding this young man <lb />
are farm every year. A <lb />

business. He bought some more <lb />
mares, pure this time. He made <lb />
money from the start has nearly <lb />
enough laid by to buy and pay <lb />
for the farm he has been working. <lb />
Another young farmer in northern <lb />
Iowa went into dairy business <lb />
six or seven years ago. Dairying was <lb />
a new thing in his part of the <lb />
Most -farmers preferred <lb />
to raise corn, where they could do <lb />
most of the work by machinery. Much <lb />
of the land at that time was badly in <lb />
need of drainage was better suited <lb />
to pasture than to com growing. A <lb />
few wet seasons reduced the profits <lb />
of the corn growers almost to the van- <lb />
point. young fellow who <lb />
had put his faith in dairy cows <lb />
milk pails and put money in the <lb />
bank. After a few years of milking <lb />
he bought the farm he was working <lb />
paid half cash. The mortgage <lb />
cannot last long In the face of a pros- <lb />
dairy business. <lb />
The average farmer of the middle <lb />
west doesn't like to think of farming <lb />
anything less than a quarter section. <lb />
Au eighty or a forty he considers <lb />
rather Nevertheless <lb />
there are many advantage in the <lb />
smaller farms. The hired help prob- <lb />
is solved, for the owner can do <lb />
nil the work himself. It Is much <lb />
easier for a man with limited capital <lb />
to buy a small farm, and the cost of <lb />
stocking and equipping is less. <lb />

The Reflector has long been <lb />
the establishment of such <lb />
manufacturing enterprises as have <lb />
good weekly rolls. They are <lb />
what count most in the business of <lb />
a town. capitalist may have his <lb />
investments in stocks and bonds from <lb />
which he can draw his dividends, yet <lb />
but little of his income finds its way <lb />
into the channels of business. He <lb />
spends enough for the necessities of <lb />
his family and for occasional pleas- <lb />
trips, any residue he may have <lb />
goes into other investments. It is not <lb />
so with the wage earners. They <lb />
draw their weekly wages and it at <lb />
once finds its way into the money <lb />
drawers of the merchants. The mer- <lb />
chants may have stores well filled <lb />
with goods, but unless there are <lb />
wage earners with some money to <lb />
spend there is not much business for <lb />
them. Hence several manufacturing <lb />
enterprises with good weekly pay <lb />
lolls are worth more to the business <lb />
a town than many times the number <lb />
of <lb />
Take The Reflector establishment, <lb />
for instance. While not given to much <lb />
boasting, do take pride in the <lb />
that it is worth something to the <lb />
business of Greenville. docs not <lb />
Login to have the largest pay roll <lb />
here, but the employees of this one <lb />
plant and those dependent upon them <lb />
spend an average of a hundred <lb />
a week with the merchants of <lb />
Greenville. being so, it is the <lb />
duty of the merchants in town to give <lb />
their business to the establishments <lb />
them. What they pay <lb />
to g goes back to them is <lb />
trade. <lb />
This la mentioned for illustration. <lb />
The same thing is true other <lb />
enterprise whose employees receive <lb />
spend their weekly. They <lb />
The News suggest that <lb />
Carolina Democrats better have <lb />
When any party puts out good, hon- <lb />
est, capable men for the various <lb />
to be filled, that party has the right to <lb />
expect every man who pretends to be <lb />
its adherent to support the ticket. <lb />
Now we believe that when a party <lb />
does not consider efficiency and nor- <lb />
but just simply nominates <lb />
men because they happen to have a <lb />
pull with certain class of people, and <lb />
nominates inefficient men, there is <lb />
some excuse for a strict party man to <lb />
Courier. <lb />
There is good In the <lb />
foregoing. In the case of Pitt county, <lb />
a ticket composed of good, capable <lb />
men has been nominated, hence it is <lb />
the duty of every Democrat in the <lb />
county to support the ticket. Some <lb />
of the men on this ticket have been <lb />
tried in office for several years and <lb />
have fully met every requirement. <lb />
The new men nominated are equally <lb />
good and worthy of all confidence. <lb />
Of course the entire ticket in this <lb />
county is going to be elected, but <lb />
Democrat should vote and make <lb />
the majority as large as possible. <lb />
A New York lawyer who is attorney <lb />
for holders of those old bonds against <lb />
North Carolina about which there has <lb />
been so much stir, is long cir- <lb />
to people in North Carolina <lb />
trying to convince that it is <lb />
holding the state back in progress <lb />
and reputation not pay the bonds. <lb />
How easy it to think Marion But- <lb />
is behind that circular scheme. <lb />
Wouldn't it cost North Carolina a <lb />
fine sum if his crowd could get con- <lb />
of the state once more <lb />
What is this coming to light now <lb />
Is Dr. Cook really going to make <lb />
A dispatch states <lb />
that he is there from <lb />
with proof of his claims to the dis- <lb />
of the North Pole. From this <lb />
it may be inferred, if the dispatch is <lb />
not a fake, that the time was <lb />
been lost to the world and supposed <lb />
to be in an asylum in some secluded <lb />
place, he has been back in the Arctic <lb />
regions gathering together the proof <lb />
which he claims to have left be- <lb />
hind . <lb />
A book that should be in the hands <lb />
of every voter in the stale is the Dem- <lb />
Hand-Book that is now being <lb />
sent out by the stale executive com- <lb />
and a copy of which can be <lb />
had by addressing Chairman A. H. El- <lb />
at Raleigh. The book contains <lb />
pages of campaign matter bear- <lb />
upon both state and national <lb />
and a comparison of the records <lb />
of the the two parties. Those who <lb />
want to be informed on these things <lb />
should read the book. <lb />
North Carolina suffers a great loss <lb />
in the recent death of Editor John M. <lb />
Julian, of the Salisbury Post. Not <lb />
only was he held in high esteem by <lb />
the newspaper fraternity, but he was <lb />
a useful man to his town and to his <lb />
State. Several times he represented <lb />
Rowan county in the legislature and <lb />
he took high rank in that body, <lb />
ways being a hard working member <lb />
John Julian will be sadly missed. <lb />
From the coast towns come the re- <lb />
ports that the fishermen are catching <lb />
more mullets than have been landed <lb />
in years. That particular branch of <lb />
eating ought to be cheaper then. We <lb />
are glad something gives prospect of <lb />
checking the beef trust, for nobody <lb />
who could get good corned mullets <lb />
would eat beef. <lb />
The report is going around that the <lb />
North Carolina Republicans have a <lb />
barrel of money to spend in this cam- <lb />
It may help somebody for the <lb />
money to get in circulation, but none <lb />
of them will be helped by getting <lb />
offices they to buy with the <lb />
money. <lb />
Those fellows who started the <lb />
rumor that President Taft was going <lb />
to stand aside for Roosevelt to have <lb />
the In 1912, were merely <lb />
guessing, The rumor is denied, the <lb />
president is sticking to former de- <lb />
to take it again if it <lb />
his way. <lb />
If Marlon and his gang could <lb />
ct hold of North Carolina once more, <lb />
would bankrupt the State pay- <lb />
those fraudulent bonds. And But- <lb />
would get a rake off in <lb />
of millions. That is <lb />
what be is working for <lb />
The mayor of Durham has <lb />

and are entitled to the patronage of <lb />
those with whom this money is spent. <lb />
It is the way to make business. Ev- <lb />

be supported, and additional ones <lb />
should be. encouraged. Greenville <lb />
needs. in particular <lb />
as the not as many <lb />
enterprises as it to have. <lb />
Give employment to wage earners, <lb />
encourage the enterprises that employ <lb />
them, and you will an <lb />

The Wilmington Dispatch, the <lb />
bright afternoon paper of the by <lb />
the had so outgrown former <lb />
quarters that it erected and recently <lb />

building. Immediately following the <lb />
change also came a change in the size <lb />
of the paper, and The Dispatch is <lb />
now eight pages of seven columns, <lb />
Instead of six pages of six columns <lb />
before. The Increase in size car- <lb />

The Wilmington Dispatch went dry, <lb />
speaking, yesterday. May <lb />
we inquire whether Cowan was mere- <lb />

Greenville to settle the red-headed <lb />
controversy with Whichard. Greens- <lb />

Must have been the former, his <lb />
bright head has bobbed up <lb />
this way. <lb />
Things do look good for <lb />
Pitt county. It is already one of tho <lb />
best farming counties in the <lb />
and the interest is awakening <lb />
good roads and the movement for <lb />
reclaiming swamp lands means <lb />
for the near future. <lb />
We wonder what has become <lb />
real good apples. Some that, are fine <lb />
enough looking are shipped to the <lb />
merchants, but they do not seem to <lb />
have that fine flavor that they used <lb />
to have. . <lb />
The decision of Taft to <lb />
make no further distinction between <lb />
insurgents and regulars in the dis- <lb />
of offices, has given <lb />
of the North Carolina pie hunters <lb />
shake. <lb />

Dixon and the Devil. <lb />
Rev. A. C. Dixon, of Shel- <lb />
by, but now pastor of the Moody <lb />
church in Chicago, has recently <lb />
preached a sermon that is being pass- <lb />
ed around. According to this recent <lb />
deliverance, the horns, barbed tail, <lb />
cloven hoofs and general terrifying <lb />
make-up which used to form the de- <lb />
of Father of <lb />
have gone out of fashion. Instead of <lb />
these, according to Dr. Dixon, he Las <lb />
put on a frock coat, a silk hat, a <lb />
white tie, a high collar and patent <lb />
leather and may be seen <lb />
cavorting around pink teas and la- <lb />
looking benevolent and <lb />
trying to appear intellectual. Ac- <lb />
cording to the report-in The Record <lb />
Herald, Dr. said a lot of <lb />
men are falling victims to his wiles. <lb />
He is the same in spite <lb />
of his efforts to appear <lb />
He is trying to adopt himself to mod- <lb />
conditions and, as evidence of <lb />
the of his operations, Dr. <lb />
Dixon pointed to the large followings <lb />
obtained by the <lb />
SOphist and Annie <lb />
which, he declared, founded by <lb />
women at the direct instigation of <lb />
Satan The doctors think <lb />
that any knowledge forbidden by God <lb />
was satanic and the seeking <lb />
it was sinful. To back this up <lb />
he quoted from that portion of <lb />
Scripture which adjures to converse <lb />
not with those who have <lb />
and who in the <lb />
Then the doctor went into a <lb />
severe arraignment of women. <lb />
he is quoted, a good <lb />
woman more than I and no man is <lb />
good who doesn't owe much of <lb />

but it is a fact that cannot be denied <lb />
women have responsible <lb />
for a great deal of what is wickedest <lb />

Becoming Rich. <lb />
Too often the fact that a man is <lb />
growing rich is first announced to <lb />
his neighbor by a wider spread and <lb />
a finer show in his style of living. <lb />
His wife and daughters begin to re- <lb />
the They neither <lb />
toil nor spin but Solomon in all his <lb />
glory was not arrayed like one of <lb />
them. Next come a coach and span. <lb />
Then, of course, a new house. The <lb />
old one was ample. There is no in- <lb />
crease of family but without a grand- <lb />
mansion, how is the world to <lb />
know that the man has made a for- <lb />
tune So architects and painters <lb />
and decorators in due time install <lb />
the household in a palace fit for a <lb />
duke and they take their rank <lb />
among upper All the <lb />
humble walks of life are abandoned, <lb />
old friends are dropped, the hearts <lb />
once often cheered, and the poor <lb />
helped, looked no longer for their <lb />
coming. The cloak of selfishness is <lb />
tightly drawn and the heart closed <lb />
to the appeals for charity. How <lb />
true, when blessings come in the <lb />
way prosperity, they are <lb />
wholly appropriated for self, and <lb />
the good they were intended to do <lb />
never speed on missions of mercy, <lb />
but are tightly held, and <lb />

Dying Hard. <lb />
An instance of the ruling passion <lb />
strong in death has just come to light <lb />
in Mecklenburg Republican circles. <lb />
The key note of North Carolina Re- <lb />
has been and is <lb />
It has no higher aim than that in <lb />
the procurement and control of <lb />
jobs and it is this very <lb />
that has retarded the growth <lb />
of the party in this state How hope- <lb />
less is the obsession for office in the <lb />
Republican breast is shown in the <lb />
recent action of machine com- <lb />
in practically commanding <lb />
in the event of his election <lb />
to congress, to take instructions from <lb />
them and to make no appointments <lb />
to office that are not endorsed by the <lb />
county machine. Of course this ac- <lb />
is audacious, and it goes to show <lb />
why a Republican is a Republican <lb />
in this State. The reply of Candidate <lb />
was to the effect that in the <lb />
matter of making appointments he <lb />
would not be dominated by the ma- <lb />

How State Fairs Help the People. <lb />
From several score of young farmers <lb />
of the Northwest have been obtained <lb />
statements as to what State fairs do <lb />
for the people and as to what they <lb />
should do. What these young farmers <lb />
say the fairs do for people may be <lb />
summarized <lb />
They give------ <lb />
Vacations for many farmers with <lb />
pleasure and profit combined. <lb />
Contact with men in every <lb />
department of agricultural work, and <lb />
the stimulus which such contact can <lb />
not fail to offer. <lb />
Elevation in standards of work and <lb />
in quality of product; first, by the off- <lb />
of premiums, ind, second by ob- <lb />
Increase of interest in farm work <lb />
as dignified and wholly worthy of re- <lb />
Opportunity for study of newly de- <lb />
vised farm machinery at work. <lb />
Encouragement toward the improve- <lb />
of crops and stock through the <lb />
rotation of crops, select seed and wise- <lb />
cattle, sheep, hogs, etc. <lb />
Development of tho State pride and <lb />
broadened views as to <lb />
the constitutional prohibition, which <lb />
means that bis party in this State de- <lb />
sire to knock the law in this State. <lb />
The In Maine had very little <lb />
to do with prohibition. The national <lb />
committee sent its best speakers to <lb />
the State and the entire campaign <lb />
was made on national issues. The <lb />
Democrats in Maine have long favor- <lb />
ed giving the people a chance to vote <lb />
on this constitutional amendment and <lb />
now that they will control the <lb />
it may be If the <lb />
party in North Carolina wants <lb />
to make a clear-cut issue on State pro- <lb />
why does it not do so. A <lb />
committee was appointed some days <lb />
ago to interpret the meaning of this <lb />
plank. Mr. Thomas Settle, who is the <lb />
daddy of the plank, said it meant <lb />
booze; but the other members had an <lb />
attack of cold feet and said it did l <lb />

move is to furnish life insurance to <lb />
protect the widow and family in case <lb />
of death. It will be but another ad- <lb />
to the features of <lb />

The principal feature of this new pol- <lb />
icy is that the premiums may be <lb />
paid in monthly installments, thus <lb />
making the policy easy to carry. <lb />

Large Crawl Present and Much In- <lb />
Shewn In Movement to Drain <lb />
Swift Creek and Clay Root Swamps. <lb />
A meeting that means much for <lb />
the southern of the county <lb />
was held at Ayden Wednesday after- <lb />
noon. It was in the interest of the <lb />
movement to drain Swift creek <lb />
Clay Root swamps, along which are <lb />
large bodies of land that would be of <lb />
groat value if reclaimed. This was <lb />
first started at a meeting held in <lb />
a few weeks ago. a com- <lb />
being appointed then and an- <lb />
other meeting called for Ayden. In- <lb />
was shown in the large number <lb />
of people who attended this meet- <lb />
After an introduction by Mr. Paul <lb />
Webb, Congressman John H. Small <lb />
addressed the large audience for about <lb />
an hour, in addition to pointing out <lb />
the great benefit that would come <lb />
from drainage of these lands, he ex- <lb />
plained fully the drainage laws and <lb />
the steps that should be taken to es- <lb />
a drainage district and get the <lb />
lands drained <lb />
At the conclusion of the speech a <lb />
large number of land owners along <lb />
Swift creek and Clay Root swamps <lb />
signed a petition to be sent to the <lb />
government asking that a drainage <lb />
engineer be sent to make a <lb />
nary survey of these lands, designate <lb />
the proper boundaries of the district <lb />
and estimate the cost of draining. <lb />
When this is done further steps will <lb />
be taken to have the draining done <lb />
and these lands reclaimed. It will <lb />
add thousands of dollars to the <lb />
of that section. <lb />

ship, killed a very large rattlesnake <lb />
near his home a few days ago. While <lb />
the snake was a large one. it had only- <lb />

And speaking about snakes, re- <lb />
minds us that it is said that with the <lb />
possible exception of the poplar leaf, <lb />
which seems to be increasing in <lb />
rapidly, all others are on the de- <lb />
crease. A number of large poplar <lb />
leafs have been killed this season <lb />

Many people take their <lb />

The long, dull summer has <lb />
passed. Nearly everybody has re- <lb />
turned from their vacations With a <lb />
or loss grim determination to get <lb />
down as they can <lb />
adjust themselves to the traces again <lb />
The warehouse bells are again ringing <lb />
for daily sales on all the markets, and <lb />
the voice of the tobacco auctioneer Is <lb />
again abroad in the land Just <lb />
how much energy each man can <lb />
into his business, depends on the bu- <lb />
and the man, and it plainly <lb />
conjectural, but with pull- <lb />
towards the same end and all to- <lb />
business is bound to be better <lb />
than it has for several months past. <lb />
The point is for every man to do his <lb />
own level best, and hope and believe <lb />
that every other man is doing the same <lb />
thing. During the three or four <lb />
months there have been too many <lb />
business people worrying about other <lb />
people's business of <lb />
other people Is sometimes one thing <lb />
and sometimes another. What really <lb />
happens to man's own business is <lb />
mainly and generally what he makes <lb />
happen to it. The time is now at hand <lb />
to make everything good happen to <lb />
business that can possibly be made <lb />
to happen. <lb />
The outlook is not without <lb />
The best thing about it is <lb />
that even before the summer months <lb />
have passed, and while still there was <lb />
uncertainty about some of the crops, <lb />
and while still the vacation <lb />
was on, there came a distinct improve <lb />
in business, nothing to become <lb />

make things fairly good for the fall <lb />
trade. <lb />
We are convinced so far at least <lb />
as the tobacco business is concerned <lb />
that the situation warrants healthy <lb />
optimism, man doing his <lb />
best in own particular line without <lb />
worrying may happen to the <lb />

A Painting That Drove Parisian Artists <lb />

It -Is a part of the duty of the of- <lb />

canvases which are offered for <lb />

Take that thing he shouted; <lb />

Practically the Whole of <lb />
Their Lives In Beds. <lb />
Just like confirmed invalids, oysters <lb />
spend their lives In beds. The <lb />
parts of an oyster are salt water <lb />
and a handsome stomach. <lb />
Every oyster has a <lb />
lined overcoat with the moss on the <lb />
outside. Put a <lb />
gathers no moss. <lb />
Oysters, us a rule, keep their mouths <lb />
shut, but when they have been in so <lb />
defy too long they begin to gape. <lb />
They fond of playing games, one <lb />
of their favorites being <lb />
a-rosy. In this game they join shells <lb />
in a circle on a plate. They live in the <lb />
ocean In summer and during the win <lb />
months frequent the principal ho- <lb />
tels and restaurants, where they have <lb />
reserved seats on cakes of Ice <lb />
prepared for them. They are <lb />
rarely met with at or church <lb />
fairs. <lb />
An oyster is a by <lb />
a bivalve by profession and an <lb />
appetizer because he cannot help him- <lb />
self. There are girl oysters as well as <lb />
men oysters; but, so far as is known, <lb />
one is not superior to the other. <lb />
Oysters vary In according to <lb />
their circumstances and their bringing <lb />
up. Some are harder to swallow than <lb />
others. There Is no particular rule <lb />
about this. But If at first you don't <lb />
succeed, try. try again. <lb />
In June the oysters ought to be n <lb />
rare as the L. <lb />

The Carolina Home and Farm and The Eastern Reflector. <lb />
SEES DEMOCRATIC VICTORY. <lb />
GODWIN GETS <lb />
Democratic of Party's <lb />
in November Elections. <lb />
While there is nothing certain in <lb />
this world except death and taxes, <lb />
while there is many a slip be- <lb />
twixt cup lip, the signs of the <lb />
limes indicate a Democratic Moose. <lb />
The Republicans have had such an <lb />
amusing run of luck that some folks <lb />
have a settle conviction that they are <lb />
conclusion which, in <lb />
the light of history is preposterous <lb />
The American people love public <lb />
men who the who say <lb />
what they and mean what <lb />
say. A failure on the part of Stand- <lb />
pat leaders to keep the faith is <lb />
what the row is about. They <lb />
promised to revise the tariff <lb />
down. That was when then wanted <lb />
to get in. Being in, they to <lb />
revise it up. with the result that mil- <lb />
lions of honest Republicans are in <lb />
open revolt against the machine, and <lb />
propose to punish the leaders who <lb />
deceived and betrayed them. <lb />
Take two bits of evidence on this <lb />
head, which are merely samples of <lb />
volumes that could be produced. In <lb />
my last debate with Mr. Chairman <lb />
Payne on the tariff, last May, he in- <lb />
vehemently but erroneous that <lb />
this bill is a revision down and that <lb />
therefore he and his coadjutors had <lb />
the As a keeper of the <lb />
faith Brother Payne is in St. Paul's <lb />
class. But the <lb />
did not promise to revise the tar- <lb />
down, why does Mr. Chairman <lb />
Payne keep on declaring that they <lb />
have revised it down, and that there- <lb />
fore they deserve well of the country <lb />
The Economist jumped on him for <lb />
for saying that, and asserted that he <lb />
makes a mistake, as does the <lb />
dent, in trying to defend the bill by <lb />
claiming that it Is a revision down- <lb />
ward. <lb />
The knows <lb />
that he was promised a lowering of <lb />
the tariff, and he knows that he didn't <lb />
get it. consequently he is in bad <lb />

Hon. H. L. Godwin a majority of six <lb />

Godwin's majority is conservative- <lb />

Lillington, Sept. car- <lb />

Fayetteville, Sept. the sixth <lb />

of the gas boat which left <lb />

Statesville, N. C., Sept. <lb />
Sheriff Wm. of <lb />
and Mr. John Webb, of <lb />
township, had an exciting experience <lb />
with a bad and his dog Sunday <lb />
afternoon. Mr. has for <lb />
some time had a warrant for Will <lb />
Crawford, a whose home is near <lb />
the warrant charging him <lb />
with disposing of mortgaged property, <lb />
but the had always managed -to <lb />
evade the officer. Sunday afternoon <lb />
it learned that the was at <lb />
his home and Mr. <lb />
by Mr. Webb, went to the <lb />
house to make the Mr. Webb <lb />
remained in the while Mr. <lb />
called the to tho <lb />
door. When Mr. told the <lb />
that he had a warrant for him <lb />
the latter turned and rushed back <lb />
into the house with the officer at his <lb />
heels. The attempted to knock <lb />
the officer down by the door <lb />
in his face but failed, and when the <lb />
officer got inside the house the <lb />
who is a powerful man, seized him <lb />
and tried to choke him, at the same <lb />
lime reaching for a gun which he <lb />
kept on a rack the door. Hearing <lb />
the commotion in the house Mr. Webb <lb />
left the horse and rushed to Mr. <lb />
assistance. Mr. Webb is <lb />
also a powerful man and it took him <lb />
but an instant to pull the from <lb />
the officer, no sooner than this <lb />
had been done, Mr. drew <lb />
his pistol and covered the <lb />
threatening to kill him if he moved. <lb />
The finally cooled down and <lb />
being kept <lb />
he was brought o Statesville <lb />
lodged In jail. <lb />
Sept. Joe Smith <lb />
left one day last week for Richmond <lb />
to attend a medical college. <lb />
Miss Trilby Smith returned home <lb />
from Snow Hill last week. <lb />
Several of our people went to Farm- <lb />
vile to attend the show Thursday <lb />
night. . <lb />
Mrs. F. Smith, who had been <lb />
visiting her daughter, Mrs. A. J. Flan- <lb />
for a few weeks, returned- home <lb />
Tuesday evening. <lb />
Mrs. C. L. Tyson and three children, <lb />
of who have spent a week <lb />
visiting relatives in our community, <lb />
returned home Sunday evening. <lb />
Miss Gertie Smith spent last week <lb />
visiting Mrs. A. J. Flanagan and re- <lb />
turned home Sunday. <lb />
Greenville was well represented at <lb />
the yearly meeting at Sunday. <lb />
Mr. and Mrs. Ned <lb />
spent a portion of last week at Cobb- <lb />
dale. <lb />
Not knowing all their names we <lb />
will just say that a good many of his <lb />
friends and relatives of Greenville <lb />
were visiting B. P. Cobb, at <lb />
Saturday and Sunday. <lb />
Mr. Robert Jones returned to the <lb />
E. C. T. T. School at Greenville last <lb />
week. <lb />
We told you something about some <lb />
large pepper last week, and now we <lb />
will tell you about a long gourd vine. <lb />
The same lady, Mrs. C. E. <lb />
hon, has a gourd vine that had to run <lb />
about eight feet to reach a pear tree <lb />
and then it ran up to the top of the <lb />
tree, which is about twenty feet high <lb />
and run back down the tree about <lb />
fifteen feet. It has several large <lb />
gourds on it. So you see the tree is <lb />
bearing gourds. <lb />
Mr. R. of Johnston <lb />
county, is holding a protracted meet- <lb />
in the Free Will Baptist church <lb />
at Arthur this week. There have <lb />
been two additions up to date. <lb />
Mr. J. P. Woodard, one the E C. <lb />
T. T. S. students, came up Saturday <lb />
evening and preached a very good <lb />
sermon at Arthur Saturday night <lb />
He returned to Greenville Monday <lb />
morning. <lb />
Mr. W. F. Walters, of Ayden, <lb />
came Monday evening and attended <lb />
the meeting at Arthur. He returned <lb />
this morning. <lb />

Mr. J. C. Carpenter, well known <lb />
citizen of township, has a <lb />
bull dog he prizes very highly <lb />
not only because he Is a good watch <lb />
dog but because he is developing ex- <lb />
sagacity as a fish <lb />
canine. Last Sunday a number <lb />
of Mr. Carpenter's sons went bathing <lb />
Lane's creek, near his home. They <lb />
were having a good tome in the water <lb />
splashing and when <lb />
suddenly a large trout, <lb />
scared out of his wits, rose to the <lb />
face of the water and Jumped into a <lb />
small that was In the lake in <lb />
which they were bathing. No boo <lb />
had the fish landed in the boat than <lb />
the family bull dog, which was sitting <lb />
on the bank looking on, made for it. <lb />
The fish, the instant the dog jumped <lb />
in the boat made for the water. The <lb />
dog did not hesitate a second, but div- <lb />
ed from the boat into the water at the <lb />
where the trout disappeared and <lb />
In a second or two reappeared on the <lb />

it home and had it cooked for <lb />

The True Home. <lb />
This is true nature of home <lb />
it is the place of peace; the shelter, <lb />
not only from all injury, but from <lb />
all terror, doubt, and division. In <lb />
far as it is not this, it is not home; <lb />
so far as the anxieties of the <lb />
life penetrate into It, and the <lb />
minded, unknown, unloved, <lb />
or hostile society of the outer world <lb />
Is allowed by either husband or wife <lb />
to cross the threshold, it ceases to be <lb />
home; it is then only a part of that <lb />
outer world which have roofed <lb />
over, and lighted fire in. But so far <lb />
as it is a sacred place, a vestal <lb />
a temple of the hearth watched <lb />
over by gods, before whose <lb />
may come, but those <lb />
they can receive with far as <lb />
it is this, and roof and fire are types <lb />
only a nobler shade and <lb />
as of the rock in a weary land, and <lb />
light as of the in the <lb />
far it vindicates the name <lb />
and the praise, of home. <lb />
And wherever a true wife <lb />
this home is always round The <lb />
stars only may be head; the <lb />
glow-worm in the night-COld grass <lb />
may be the only fire at her feet; but <lb />
home is yet wherever she is; and for <lb />
a noble woman it stretches far <lb />
her, better than with cedar, or <lb />
painted with vermilion, shedding its <lb />
quiet light far for those who else <lb />

The Greenville graded schools open- <lb />
ed this morning an enrollment <lb />
of four hundred and fifteen children. <lb />
enrollment last year was <lb />
four hundred and fifty; from this it <lb />
would seem that the total for 1910-11 <lb />
will exceed by quite a good <lb />
the enrollment of any previous year. <lb />
Some of the grades are overflowing <lb />
and steps will have to be taken to <lb />
provide for their accommodation. <lb />
The teachers are as First <lb />
