THE PIPES. <lb/>
Small With Stems of <lb/>
The pipes used by <lb/>
are quite different from those of any <lb/>
other North American race and in <lb/>
the shape of the howl more <lb/>
the opium pipes used by the <lb/>
Chinese limn anything else. The <lb/>
old pipes were very in the <lb/>
amount of tobacco that they would <lb/>
hold, for in former days tobacco was <lb/>
extremely scarce and in its use was, <lb/>
most carefully husbanded. <lb/>
There was therefore a wide flaring <lb/>
margin to the pipe to catch any <lb/>
grain of tobacco that might be <lb/>
spilled in filling it; there were <lb/>
a hollow which would hold a pinch <lb/>
of tobacco as large its an <lb/>
nary pea and a rather wide hole <lb/>
fussing down through the base of <lb/>

a few draws would exhaust it. <lb/>

GOOD EXERCISE. <lb/>
Practicing Juggling at Home an Aid <lb/>
to Health. <lb/>
It has been contended that the <lb/>
easiest way to keep <lb/>
in fit condition is to practice jug- <lb/>
the art of balancing and <lb/>
catching objects. <lb/>
When exercising at home, <lb/>
watched by a teacher, one is likely <lb/>
to perform his exercises in an in- <lb/>
correct or slovenly fashion, thus do- <lb/>
himself more harm than good, <lb/>
but the simplest feat of juggling can <lb/>
done in only one way, the right <lb/>
Again, where physical exercise <lb/>
develops only a certain part or <lb/>
of the body five juggling <lb/>
calls into play every important mus- <lb/>
Finally, few physical <lb/>
train the eye or the band. Juggling <lb/>
does both. <lb/>
The mistake the novice is like- <lb/>
to make is that he tries to do off- <lb/>
hand what it has taken the <lb/>
juggler years of practice to <lb/>
accomplish. The beginner should, <lb/>
of course, start with the easiest <lb/>
feats, such as balancing a walking <lb/>
on his forehead or tossing a <lb/>
ball from behind his back over his <lb/>
shoulder and catching it as it falls. <lb/>
If one is really fond of juggling he <lb/>
may invent his own problems. <lb/>
Here are a few <lb/>
It is easier to balance a thing on <lb/>
your head than on your hand. <lb/>
Up to the point where great phys- <lb/>
i required the larger <lb/>
I the object the easier it is to balance. <lb/>
Thus it is easier to balance a walk- <lb/>
stick on your forehead than it <lb/>
is a pencil. <lb/>
One should always look at the top <lb/>
of whatever ho is balancing. <lb/>
make tho mistake of looking <lb/>
at bottom or the middle of the <lb/>
stick or whatever is being juggled. <lb/>
Again, when catching things do not <lb/>
watch your hands. Keep your eye <lb/>
on tho object, just as you would to <lb/>
