Greenville, N. C, June 1909- <lb/>
To the Tobacco Growers of <lb/>
Eastern North <lb/>
As the time approaches to <lb/>
begin curing the tobacco crop, <lb/>
The Farmers Consolidated To- <lb/>
Co being desirous of <lb/>
aiding and serving the interests <lb/>
of the tobacco farmer, begs <lb/>
leave to submit a few <lb/>
which we hope will be of <lb/>
some service to them. In calling <lb/>
attention to these matters, we <lb/>
want it understood we are not <lb/>
giving advice, but simply <lb/>
suggestion that farmers <lb/>
may think about them, and if <lb/>
approved, where practical, adopt <lb/>
such of them as they see proper. <lb/>
In the first place, we would <lb/>
call the attention of the growers <lb/>
to the fact that it now set ms <lb/>
certain that tobacco crop in <lb/>
Eastern North Carolina has been <lb/>
increased in acreage this year <lb/>
something like per cent. <lb/>
estimate of the acreage is <lb/>
based upon information obtained <lb/>
from almost every of the <lb/>
east. We believe the impression <lb/>
of the tobacco trade at large has <lb/>
been that the acreage was <lb/>
increased much more than <lb/>
per cent, but in this we think <lb/>
the trade mistaken. The con- <lb/>
of the crop up to June 1st <lb/>

the price of tobacco. We know j <lb/>
of bit ore way of controlling the <lb/>
price, and that is to control the <lb/>
production. The production <lb/>
during the last few years tut <lb/>
been only a normal one, while <lb/>
the increase this year would <lb/>
probably have resulted in a <lb/>
considerable increase in pounds <lb/>
if the seasons had been <lb/>
and a normal yield saved. <lb/>
However, it does not seem <lb/>
probable now that the crop in <lb/>
the east will be a large one. <lb/>
The unnecessary haste to <lb/>
market the crop early in the <lb/>
season when weather conditions <lb/>
are bad for handling large <lb/>
ties of tobacco, has resulted, we <lb/>
believe, in a direct loss to the <lb/>
farmers of the east during the <lb/>
last two years, of several <lb/>
hundred thousand dollars. The <lb/>
determination to market the <lb/>
bulk of the crop during August <lb/>
and September cannot but result <lb/>
in loss to the farmers. We <lb/>
realize in making this statement <lb/>
that many will say that in the <lb/>
past those who sold early <lb/>
received more than those who <lb/>
sold late. This is true, but it <lb/>
was due to the fact that <lb/>
all the tobacco was sold <lb/>
during the first few months, and <lb/>
there was not enough left of the <lb/>
crop to justify buyers in staying <lb/>
on the market, consequently, <lb/>
the remnant of the crop sold <lb/>
as well the bulk of the crop. If <lb/>
farmers had acted in <lb/>
during these past few years, and <lb/>
marketed only a small per <lb/>
it. The buyers get blocked up <lb/>
with this of <lb/>
which frequently damages -m Cook Gotten Out for tin <lb/>
their hands and causes them to a an; <lb/>
be less active on the market for j and <lb/>
other grade.-, and j . Company is <lb/>
season that you don't care to buy <lb/>
at any price. <lb/>

to get it consumed; con- <lb/>
it is a practice that, <lb/>
should be abandoned, as farmers SoU <lb/>
have had experience <lb/>
with this class of tobacco to <lb/>
satisfied that there is <lb/>
nut any in it them. If <lb/>
the law of and <lb/>
operates to the price a <lb/>
commodity, then it follows that <lb/>
the supply of this <lb/>
no account tobacco operates just <lb/>
that much to depress the market. <lb/>
It should therefore be thrown <lb/>
away, and thus taken out of the <lb/>
production, which, of course, to <lb/>
that extent reduces the supply, <lb/>
and it follows that the demand <lb/>
for the remainder will be greater, <lb/>
with a correspondingly better <lb/>
price. <lb/>
The farmers of Eastern North <lb/>

to very control the pro- <lb/>

The Southern Learning Some Sense. <lb/>
The Southern Railway seems <lb/>
to have adopted a different <lb/>
course, and a wise one, with re- <lb/>
to litigation. Some years <lb/>
ago the policy was never to c <lb/>
promise a case in court; fight it <lb/>
out was the motto. The result <lb/>
was that it got hurt in <lb/>
every way. We notice, however, <lb/>
compromised <lb/>
now, of course where the facts <lb/>
are against the company. This <lb/>
is a wise policy. It is not only <lb/>
a direct saving, but places the <lb/>
road in better shape before a <lb/>
jury in other cases. It shows a <lb/>
willingness to do what is right. <lb/>
And it may be stated that the <lb/>
road has been getting some <lb/>
verdicts recently which is a <lb/>
rarity. Greensboro Record. <lb/>

we know of only one case some <lb/>

any town in the State, but we <lb/>
arc now witnessing the passing <lb/>
of the beautiful horses and turn- <lb/>
outs. They are being rapidly <lb/>
displaced by the noisy and fumy <lb/>
automobile, which line our <lb/>
streets today. We are sorry to <lb/>
see this, for our opinion <lb/>
there is no nicer prettier <lb/>

for rapid transit, but give us the <lb/>
horse and buggy for pleasure , <lb/>

We do not think any <lb/>
bile owner in Greenville desires <lb/>
to do injury to any one, <lb/>

their machines is really danger- <lb/>
The aldermen adopted an <lb/>
ordinance forbidding a speed <lb/>
greater than ten miles an hour, <lb/>
and the ordinance has been duly <lb/>
published so that all may have <lb/>
warning, but it easy to see <lb/>
machines running at a speed <lb/>
much greater than the limit <lb/>
scribed in the ordinance. <lb/>
times in turning corners <lb/>
collisions have been narrowly <lb/>
averted, and if the fast running <lb/>
is not stopped serious damage is <lb/>
likely to occur. <lb/>
