It would be very much better <lb/>
if all men were honest. How <lb/>
good it would be if every man <lb/>
would accept the idea that <lb/>
is the best and <lb/>
carry it out by its own example. <lb/>
But all men are not honest and <lb/>
it is useless to expect such a con- <lb/>
of things in this wicked <lb/>
world, men will take <lb/>
advantage of others whenever <lb/>
opportunity comes to them. <lb/>
If men will steal in spite of all <lb/>
that can De said and done they <lb/>
should go at stealing as a <lb/>
and take the chances of <lb/>
being caught and punished. <lb/>
Then the people would find it <lb/>
out and be looking for them. <lb/>
But this is not the way most <lb/>
men steal- go into <lb/>

Some are laborers who kill time <lb/>

some are employers who beat <lb/>

others are tenants who steal <lb/>

Sometimes thieves are <lb/>

Now i. the Time to Build. <lb/>
If you are ever going to build <lb/>
a frame house, do it now. This <lb/>
is upshot of an elaborate <lb/>
argument in the current issue of <lb/>
Suburban Life. Lumber and <lb/>
other building materials, it is <lb/>
commonly known, have fallen <lb/>
more than anything else in the <lb/>
recent business depression; food- <lb/>
stuffs have not been greatly <lb/>
in price, but extension of <lb/>
plant of all kinds have been held <lb/>
up with a resulting sag in values <lb/>
of all structural material in <lb/>
every part of the country <lb/>
But this is only half the <lb/>
As soon as business resumes its <lb/>
normal proportions again, <lb/>
ban Life maintains, the products <lb/>
of the rapidly vanishing forests <lb/>
will go kiting upward to <lb/>
figures. Certainly the ex- <lb/>
of the last six years- <lb/>
up to last October's depression- <lb/>
justifies this view, and our <lb/>
waste, through forest fires <lb/>
this year, points only more clear- <lb/>
to a dwindling supply of what <lb/>
must long be the oasis of our <lb/>
popular building operations.- <lb/>

Certainly the Republicans are <lb/>
scared, but Democrats must not <lb/>
drop back into indifference on <lb/>
this account. Folks sometimes <lb/>
just put up their hardest tight <lb/>
when they are scared and the <lb/>
Republicans will do everything <lb/>
in their power between now and <lb/>
the election. Democrats should <lb/>
be ready to meet and route <lb/>
them. <lb/>
Of course Republican office <lb/>
holders can preach prosperity <lb/>
and brag on the dinner <lb/>
as they have the govern- <lb/>
treasury to draw on, but <lb/>
starving school children <lb/>
in the of Chicago give the <lb/>
lie to their claim. And Chicago <lb/>
is not the only city where the <lb/>
laboring man sees the lack of <lb/>
prosperity. <lb/>
Hon. John Sharp Williams, <lb/>
who for several terms has been <lb/>
Democratic leader in congress <lb/>
and is now senator-elect from <lb/>
Mississippi, came to North Caro- <lb/>
Saturday and a great <lb/>
speech to an immense crowd In <lb/>
that afternoon. Mr- <lb/>
Williams is the foremost Demo- <lb/>

As we understand Mr. <lb/>
defense of the <lb/>
campaign <lb/>
was entirely proper for <lb/>
Mr. Roosevelt to solicit this <lb/>
money, because he intended to <lb/>
Mr. and did <lb/>
him. <lb/>
Secrecy was necessary be- <lb/>
cause Mr. Roosevelt's motives <lb/>
might have been misconstrued <lb/>
by low-minded persons who <lb/>
would see in the transaction a <lb/>
sordid attempt on the part of <lb/>
to control the <lb/>
through the use of tainted <lb/>
money. <lb/>
Publicity of such a <lb/>
before election might <lb/>
have thwarted the high moral <lb/>
purpose of Mr. Roosevelt in <lb/>
from his <lb/>
money without giving anything <lb/>
in return. <lb/>
Other presidential <lb/>
dates should never be permitted <lb/>
to engage in similar negotiations, <lb/>
because even, were <lb/>
patriotic to repudiate <lb/>
the moral would <lb/>
not be sufficiently practical to <lb/>
deceive a man like <lb/>
The fact that it was Theo- <lb/>
Roosevelt who did this is a <lb/>
complete answer to all hostile <lb/>
criticism. <lb/>
Having defended the <lb/>
perhaps, Mr. Roosevelt <lb/>

Republican politicians took the <lb/>
view that Roosevelt was hurting <lb/>
the party, so they insisted on <lb/>
his quitting so much writing. <lb/>
It would set North Carolina <lb/>
back several years if the <lb/>
wore to again get control <lb/>
of the State. But they are not <lb/>
going to get it. <lb/>
Roosevelt is itching to take <lb/>
the stump and may yet do so. <lb/>
He is already making a spectacle <lb/>
of himself and belittling the <lb/>
office of president, and if he <lb/>
does take the stump he may ex- <lb/>

Mr. Taft was getting pretty- <lb/>
close to the truth when he once <lb/>
said in a speech at Greensboro <lb/>
that it would be better for the <lb/>
Republican party if there was <lb/>
not a Federal holder in <lb/>
North Carolina. He will see <lb/>
things moving around to that <lb/>
condition after the next election. <lb/>
No, we have not heard that <lb/>
the Republican candidates in <lb/>
Pitt county want a division of <lb/>
time with the Democratic can- <lb/>
in the canvas. They <lb/>
are not hunting for such a fight <lb/>
as they would get on their <lb/>
hands. <lb/>
Since the adoption of the con- <lb/>

North Carolina has been free <lb/>

This feeling of freedom <lb/>

to have ex Gov. Jarvis present, <lb/>
who extended an invitation to <lb/>
the teachers to visit the Eastern <lb/>
Training school grounds at <lb/>
We look forward for the best <lb/>
year's work yet, to be done by <lb/>
the association though she looks <lb/>
back into the past with pride at <lb/>
her great achievements. The <lb/>
good to Pitt through the <lb/>
of this association will never <lb/>
fully be recorded this side of <lb/>
eternity. <lb/>

Information on Registration. <lb/>
Raleigh, Oct. 10.-Attorney <lb/>
General has given an <lb/>
opinion on registration. He says <lb/>
that the new registration is <lb/>
required for the coming election. <lb/>
All persons registered in the last <lb/>
election can vote without <lb/>
again. Once on the per- <lb/>
roll, they are always on <lb/>
it. He says further that there is <lb/>
no reason why any county can- <lb/>
not order a new registration if <lb/>
its board of election so desires, <lb/>
but does not think the latter can <lb/>
eliminate names on the <lb/>
registration roll because <lb/>
the persons do not re-register. <lb/>
However, minors coming of <lb/>
age must register. This the <lb/>
last election in which those who <lb/>
cannot read and write can <lb/>
under the grand-father clause <lb/>
as the Constitution of this limits <lb/>
the time to December 31st next. <lb/>

We had a lire Tuesday <lb/>
and the bell didn't ring. How in <lb/>
the thunder is a fellow to know <lb/>
where a fire is with the street <lb/>
sweeper at work Tuesday night <lb/>
this new appendage to our town <lb/>
government went to work on a <lb/>
dry and dusty street, and the <lb/>
dust it raised was a caution. I <lb/>
the suggestion that the <lb/>
merchants all chip in cents a <lb/>
piece and purchase water enough <lb/>
from the town to dampen the <lb/>
ardor of the dust when that <lb/>
street sweeper hits it. Why. a <lb/>
fellow could almost dig a post <lb/>
hole in the air with a shovel, it <lb/>
was so thick. And, candidly <lb/>
folks, don't it look like our town <lb/>
