Water melons are coining in. <lb/>
Jno. Dixon had a load in town <lb/>
Saturday, the first of the season. <lb/>
C. J. Smith Son had a large <lb/>
boiler to arrive last week They <lb/>
will combine this with their <lb/>
other improved machinery and <lb/>
double their capacity by the <lb/>
ginning season. <lb/>
Elias Turnage and J. J. Ed <lb/>
wards have gone to spend a few <lb/>
days at Panacea Springs for rest <lb/>
and recreation- <lb/>
Whooping cough and the little <lb/>
urchins go hand in hand, but are <lb/>
bad companions. <lb/>
would do well to secure them <lb/>
now. The bottom crop is all <lb/>
gone, and the recent rain has <lb/>
affected the vines that the top <lb/>
crop will be very short. Two <lb/>
years ago in the middle <lb/>
of the season sold for cents a <lb/>
dozen and a peck for a <lb/>
short time and then wet back up <lb/>
to the first of the season prices. <lb/>
History will repeat itself this <lb/>
year <lb/>

Drowsed is the Sound While <lb/>
Returning From Surf. <lb/>
Mr. T. D. Blackburn, a <lb/>
co auction of Greenville, was <lb/>
among the excursionists to <lb/>
Morehead last Sunday and had a <lb/>
thrilling experience. He was on <lb/>
one of the sharpies returning <lb/>
from a trip to the and <lb/>
i reclining very carelessly on <lb/>
the deck rail. He was cautioned <lb/>
i to his position but did not heed <lb/>
warning. As the pilot of the <lb/>
was about to shift course <lb/>
the boat took a sudden dip and <lb/>
lover Blackburn into <lb/>
the sound where the water was <lb/>
very deep. <lb/>
the boat turned about <lb/>
I to rescue the overboard and <lb/>
for a time all was excitement. A <lb/>
box was first thrown him and <lb/>
this helped keep him afloat. <lb/>
The boat was difficult <lb/>
in such short turns and Mr <lb/>
Blackburn was run over several <lb/>
times before he was finally <lb/>
picked up and hauled back on <lb/>
board. He pretty well used <lb/>
I up and has not yet fully recover- <lb/>
ed from his experience. <lb/>
is likely to result in a <lb/>
decreasing rate of dividend, <lb/>
while careful and economic <lb/>
methods are likely to result in an <lb/>
increased amount of profits to be <lb/>
divided. Under man- <lb/>
the financial reports of <lb/>
he Mutual Life Insurance Com- <lb/>
of New York have shown a <lb/>
constantly increasing sum to be <lb/>
distributed as dividends among <lb/>
the insured, as will be seen by <lb/>
the following record from <lb/>
the reports issued by the <lb/>
Dividends paid in 1905, <lb/>
758,003.99. <lb/>
Dividends paid in 1906, <lb/>
919.15. <lb/>
Dividends paid in 1907, <lb/>
331.493.34. <lb/>
Apportioned for payment in <lb/>
1908. <lb/>
This tremendous increase in <lb/>
the amount of dividends paid and <lb/>
to be paid, is due to the <lb/>
and economical management of <lb/>
the company and the <lb/>
of deferred dividend policies. <lb/>
The Mutual Life Insurance Co- <lb/>
of New York, stands at the top. <lb/>

that is not wholesome for the <lb/>
soul. At the late Charlotte <lb/>
meeting many fool things were <lb/>
done and said, and by men who <lb/>
ought to have known better and <lb/>
who did know better, but who <lb/>
turned themselves loose and let <lb/>
the devil lead them captive at <lb/>
his will. To be perfectly <lb/>
the average delegate, after he <lb/>
has become intoxicated with the <lb/>
convention, spirit, has no more <lb/>
sense than a goat. He <lb/>
reason to the winds and devotes <lb/>
himself to the business of try- <lb/>
to make more noise than tho <lb/>
man who sits beside him with a <lb/>
voice like a fog-horn. Lung <lb/>
power is the main thing with <lb/>
these delegates, and all their <lb/>
braying only adds to the <lb/>
and the run of the <lb/>
business. But there are a few <lb/>
men. blessings on them, who <lb/>
work their heads rather than <lb/>
their lungs. They restrain their <lb/>
passions, as a trained horseman <lb/>
does his steeds; they keep their <lb/>
heads cool and clear. They have <lb/>
no time are too <lb/>

After the turmoil has subsided <lb/>
and the clouds have cleared <lb/>
away, it is easy to look back and <lb/>
see these captains looming large <lb/>
above the lung artists who, sen- <lb/>
enough at home, are wild <lb/>

elsewhere, these superior men <lb/>

Remarkable Maternity Record of <lb/>

In Asheville lives a lady who, <lb/>

a high rank in any such contest. <lb/>
Mrs. Flora Brown, who lives <lb/>
on Williams street, has been the <lb/>

far more remarkable by the fact <lb/>
that Mrs. Brown is now but <lb/>

needs of the people, and we also <lb/>
believe he will do nothing to in- <lb/>
