Well, I busied myself getting <lb/>
some things for the district- <lb/>
James City was a town with a <lb/>
solid population, and had <lb/>
never had a I got a <lb/>
established there; then <lb/>
I got an appropriation for a <lb/>
public building at <lb/>
across the river, and got <lb/>
for a national road from <lb/>
Newborn to the national <lb/>
near by, which em- <lb/>
at good wages for the <lb/>
colored citizens of James City. <lb/>
blustering, boisterous Northeast <lb/>
invited all the little winds that live <lb/>
up the sky to and play. North- <lb/>
east was so merry and mail that be <lb/>
briskly blew and friskily Mew. getting <lb/>
ready for bis party. <lb/>
He whisked the leaves and twisted <lb/>
the trees and broke off twigs with <lb/>
greatest ease. He was awkward, too, <lb/>
and made a big hullabaloo for the <lb/>
little work he bad to do. But at last <lb/>
all was ready, and the guests began <lb/>
to arrive. North and East came to- <lb/>
They were cousins In weather. <lb/>
North was quite a bright chap, with <lb/>
a cool manner and a clear complexion. <lb/>
He brought us a present some glorious, <lb/>
glittering Icicles. <lb/>
East was a high spirited maiden, <lb/>
who could never keep still a minute, <lb/>
and she brought a gift of puffy, fluffy <lb/>
The three winds played awhile. They <lb/>
made little twirls and whirls In the <lb/>
DOW. Then they made little <lb/>
and crossings of the twigs the tree- <lb/>
tops. They bristled and whistled; <lb/>
they bustled and hustled <lb/>
But when beard West Wind <lb/>
coming the three went away and hid <lb/>
In the deep, dark wood. <lb/>
West was a mild, gentle little <lb/>
lady she was quite contented all by <lb/>
herself and smiled sweetly played <lb/>
lonely but lively games of puff <lb/>
and whiff, Then she went away. <lb/>
Mm tried to find the hidden <lb/>
but. although she blew crack <lb/>
and crevice and raised a terrible dust, <lb/>
she could not Dad North. Northeast or <lb/>
East. <lb/>
Then South came mid. finding no one <lb/>
to revolve him. ate all the lee <lb/>
snow, like the greedy fellow be <lb/>
and went back to his blossoms. <lb/>
What a strange party Com- <lb/>
An Thief. <lb/>
owned a beautiful horse <lb/>
Which very valuable. <lb/>
While was transacting <lb/>
a thief stole the horse. <lb/>
The owner shortly afterward saw the <lb/>
rogue leading his lion and took him <lb/>
before tho or Judge, <lb/>

the Wicked Arab was punished. <lb/>

TEN REASONS AGAINST <lb/>

of its branch lines, as <lb/>

Hope. <lb/>
These branch lines now have- <lb/>
double daily passenger service, <lb/>
and if the request of the rail- <lb/>
road is complied with it will take <lb/>
off half the trains and leave the <lb/>
towns effected with only one <lb/>
round trip passenger train a day <lb/>
on the A. C. L. It will mean <lb/>
for Greenville taking off the <lb/>
train from Weldon that passes <lb/>
here at 11.25 a. m. and from <lb/>
Kinston at 4.25 p. m. This train <lb/>

GREENVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, JAN. 1908 <lb/>
LEGISLATURE SHOULD ACT- <lb/>
During the past two weeks we <lb/>
have noticed a great deal of com- <lb/>
in the State papers on the <lb/>
recent interview of ex-Gov. T. J. <lb/>
Jarvis in The Reflector in regard <lb/>
the wisdom of the extra leg- <lb/>
passing a State <lb/>
law. While a majority of <lb/>
the papers have expressed <lb/>
of Governor views, <lb/>
some have spoken against it. <lb/>
Among the objections raised to <lb/>
his position is the suggestion that <lb/>
it would be unfair to thrust pro- <lb/>
upon the people of the <lb/>
State without giving them a <lb/>
chance to vote on it. We won- <lb/>
if those papers holding such <lb/>
a were rot in favor of the <lb/>
President Roosevelt owes his <lb/>
position largely to Secretary <lb/>
but that did not keep <lb/>
him from going back on the <lb/>
latter. <lb/>
A roans white man is in <lb/>
at Asheville for refusing to testify <lb/>
can accomplish <lb/>
most anything her people make <lb/>
in court. Contempt proceedings up their minds to do,, and the <lb/>
and a jail sentence move I boat freight line on the river will <lb/>
him to testify. He had nerve. <lb/>
In order to entice needed re- <lb/>
the Navy department has <lb/>
hit upon the plan of sending out <lb/>
moving picture shows giving the <lb/>
gala side of life on the ships. <lb/>
Better plan would to offer <lb/>
reasonable pay. <lb/>
It is strange how some people <lb/>
he special legislature will miss who favored the Watts law which <lb/>
its opportunity if it fails to heed <lb/>
the popular call for State <lb/>
But we do not think it <lb/>
will fail. <lb/>
Charles Emory Smith, editor <lb/>
of the Philadelphia Press, and <lb/>
postmaster general under <lb/>
dent Sunday at <lb/>
his home in Philadelphia. <lb/>
If the members from Forsythe, <lb/>
Rowan and New Hanover are <lb/>
going to want any when they get <lb/>
to Raleigh, had better take <lb/>
Watts law that was passed by j it along with them from home. <lb/>
the legislature of 1903. They <lb/>
should remember that the Watts <lb/>
law completely cut off the sale <lb/>

When the Norfolk Southern <lb/>

working to that end a temper- <lb/>

in Raleigh on Tuesday, 21st, the <lb/>

the advance of freight rates to <lb/>
Greenville was the result of a <lb/>

Greenville needs to this <lb/>
by establishing and patronizing <lb/>

Important Functions of This<lb/>
The perspiration is a watery <lb/>
of certain curiously coiled <lb/>
glands in the skin. It used to be <lb/>
thought that it served a useful <lb/>
pose in removing waste matters <lb/>
from the and there is no <lb/>
doubt that it does so in a measure, <lb/>
but it cannot compare in this re- <lb/>
With the secretion of the kid- <lb/>
Indeed it is ninety-eight and <lb/>
right-tenths parts water, and the <lb/>
part is chiefly chloride of so- <lb/>
which gives it the well known <lb/>
w salty taste. Its function is to <lb/>
ten the layer of cells in <lb/>
the skin and so facilitate their re- <lb/>
A Hut its chief use is <lb/>
to be to regulate <lb/>
tare of the body and prevent, by <lb/>
evaporation, excessive and danger- <lb/>
heat. <lb/>
X The quantity secreted depends <lb/>
much upon the temperature of the <lb/>
H air, exercise and the amount of fluid <lb/>
drunk. But it averages between <lb/>
t thirty and forty ounces a day. <lb/>
It varies in inverse proportion to <lb/>
the secretion of the kidneys. The <lb/>
secretion is constant summer and <lb/>
. winter, day and night, but <lb/>
evaporation keeps pace with it, <lb/>
and it docs not appear as moisture <lb/>
on the skin. This is called the in- <lb/>
sensible perspiration, while that <lb/>
visible as water is called the <lb/>
perspiration. <lb/>
it is do reused in amount in <lb/>
diseases, such as diabetes, in <lb/>
which the kidney secretion is <lb/>
increased, and in <lb/>
, disease of the skin. <lb/>
Increased perspiration may be <lb/>
. purely nervous in origin, as in <lb/>
the beads on the forehead of one <lb/>
is embarrassed, or the cold <lb/>
sweat of fear or some other <lb/>
emotion. In some cases the in- <lb/>
t creased perspiration is in <lb/>
the hands and feet If this is an <lb/>
expression of general weakness, ton- <lb/>
and good food may correct the <lb/>
condition, but usually local treat- <lb/>

acid is often of great service. <lb/>
t The moist hand may be kept dry <lb/>
by frequent application to the <lb/>
X I palms of a saturated solution of <lb/>
boric acid in cologne water. <lb/>
The perspiration that occurs at <lb/>
night in consumption and other dis- <lb/>
eases, accompanied with hectic <lb/>
is often very distressing. The <lb/>
quantity of water exuded is some- <lb/>
times enormous, soaking not only <lb/>
night clothes, but the entire bedding <lb/>
and mattress. If the patient's eon- <lb/>
after will permit, n not bath of <lb/>
four or live duration at <lb/>
bedtime will prevent or <lb/>

at others a teacher, but always <lb/>
