here but it was the greatest harangue <lb />
an hour that he had ever been forced t,, j <lb />

I learned something else on Skinner <lb />

These you are to for. Don't <lb />

Wednesday, Oct. was a day <lb />
not soon to be forgotten in Pitt county. <lb />
It was the occasion the discus <lb />
between W. II. Lucas, the <lb />
Democratic nominee for Congress <lb />
this district, an I Col. Harry Skinner, <lb />
tee Populist nominee and Republican <lb />
for the same office. This <lb />
speaking taking place at Skinner's <lb />
home it was expected that he would be <lb />
at his best and endeavor to make the <lb />
strongest impression possible, but the <lb />
miserable failure that he made and tin- <lb />
decent roasting he received a the <lb />
hands of Col. Loom can be judged by <lb />
what follows. <lb />
Skinner opened the discussion in a <lb />
speech of one hour. He started off by <lb />
saying everybody knew whom and <lb />
what he represented-that he was the <lb />
regular nominee of the party <lb />
and had been duly endorsed by th ; Re- <lb />
publicans of the Lucas don't <lb />
what he the nominee of. He <lb />
said he had represented the county in <lb />
the Legislature-and the in Con- <lb />
and challenged his opponent to <lb />
show that every act of his had not been <lb />
in the interest of the people. He <lb />
pointed to the dam at the river bridge <lb />
and the gates around tin town of <lb />
Greenville as to himself. <lb />
He he was a free silver man, <lb />
but did not. believe silver was a <lb />
remedy for all ills, it was only the <lb />
beginning of reformations. He wished <lb />
that all and the world <lb />
c be sunk to the bottom of the <lb />
and a law passed by the <lb />
who dug any of either metal <lb />
from the bowels of the- earth should be <lb />
boated. He wanted to do away with <lb />
as and <lb />
other of exchange. <lb />
He accused the Democrats of the <lb />
demonetization at silver, that the Re- <lb />
publicans were the- real guilty party <lb />
but Democrat were <lb />
to the act. <lb />
If Alliance never come into <lb />
there would have been no <lb />
bedrock from th party <lb />
could have He referred <lb />
Locke Craig saying at Currituck that <lb />
it was consistent for Democrats and <lb />
Populists to fuse on the electoral ticket <lb />
but for and <lb />
to on State and count <lb />
tickets. he <lb />
saving he had voted for up to <lb />
this hour and was a man whom they <lb />
could trust until be proved false He <lb />
accused the Democrats of <lb />
and wanted the <lb />
lists to understand that Democrats <lb />
hail no love tor them had rather <lb />
destroy them than to have free silver- <lb />
They love party above country and <lb />
principle- <lb />
The iii North Carolina <lb />
arc with the gold party, are trying <lb />
nu in this every- <lb />
body knows Lain to the cause of <lb />
silver He referred to the its in <lb />
Other district in the State, and said if <lb />
the Democrats w.-re sincere in their <lb />
advocacy of silver why didn't Like <lb />
down Kitchen the fifth district and <lb />
defeat Settle by rating for Dalby, and <lb />
why didn't they take down Woodard <lb />
in the second district and defeat White <lb />
by voting for Haw- course the <lb />
inference in this was why didn't <lb />

and elect <lb />
Some one in the audience asked <lb />
is Gov. Jarvis you don't say <lb />
anything about Yes, sad Skin- <lb />
a i. am glad you called my attention <lb />
l him. Jarvis is a timid man and <lb />
wants to be on land before he speaks. <lb />
He then referred to the silver convention <lb />
in in Gov. Jarvis <lb />
was there in the preceding caucus and <lb />
mule a speech but was timid to <lb />
come out and take a stand in the con- <lb />
next day. <lb />
then said he left the Demo- <lb />
party to vole for Cleve- <lb />
land was made the test of Democracy <lb />
in 1892. Lucas ought to have walked <lb />
out like I did. He made some refer- <lb />
to what the Democratic party <lb />
could have done but didn't do, and <lb />
abused them for passing a lower tariff <lb />
saying the reduction on lumber <lb />
lost a million dollars a year to this dis- <lb />
then tried to forestall Lucas <lb />
by telling some he was going to <lb />
in this way tilled up his hour- <lb />
He some applause from <lb />
m few Populists at intervals as he went <lb />
along. <lb />
LUCAS <lb />
Instantly there acre cries for <lb />
ad the chorus was taken op it <lb />
He then made brief to the <lb />
c at Washington <lb />
him by acclamation, being a <lb />
farmer only an ordinary <lb />
that he felt the lack of means <lb />
the district and tried to per <lb />
them to nominate some one else. <lb />
But nomination as it did I <lb />
could not decline it. I am in this fight <lb />
to the finish and to whip. Skinner <lb />
may and cavort, hut he will find <lb />
on election day I have buried him so <lb />
deep his trickery a bubble can never <lb />
rise to stow where he is. <lb />
Skinner's knowledge of silver <lb />
wonderful, he makes himself out about <lb />
the only patriot in the wot Id. <lb />
He had the audacity to tell me n few <lb />
days ago that he learned Bryan what <lb />
he knows about silver. <lb />
He mooned the of Skinner's <lb />
reference to the tariff on lumber and <lb />
said now I want ask Skinner when <lb />
the emergency bill was up before <lb />
last Congress it he did not vote to in- <lb />
crease the tax bagging aid ties <lb />
Answer answer <lb />
Skinner says he is a silver man. <lb />
know I am and the question is which <lb />
one us is the best. I will examine <lb />
h'm on that. He asked me second <lb />
his nomination for <lb />
the Democratic convention <lb />
Raleigh in 1892, as he wanted a <lb />
chance to make a speech. Skinner <lb />
made a speech declaring a Dem- <lb />
.-aid that his voice would be <lb />
heard throughout the <lb />
the principles of Democracy. <lb />
Inside a month from that time Skin- <lb />
was nominated by the <lb />
in for Governor and when he <lb />
he saw at time-that his <lb />
in the field would endanger the <lb />
the State by turning it over to the Re- <lb />
publicans he would they <lb />
took him down and nominated <lb />
Now we see him w gold <lb />
R-publicans in this district. At Elisa- <lb />
beth City he was as thick Pale- <lb />
man John and Cobb as three in <lb />
Lucas then told the colored d <lb />
what Skinner said in his speech at <lb />
Raleigh a few months ago about no <lb />
need to ask for office, and read an <lb />
editorial comment upon that speech by <lb />
a colored paper in Wilmington. And <lb />
now Skinner has got the <lb />
to be asking the colored <lb />
him back to congress; lie can't <lb />
get there their votes. <lb />
it is because of this abundance brass <lb />
he possesses that he wants all the gold <lb />
and silver in the world buried in the <lb />
ocean, his new medium of <lb />
would develop in a scheme to get <lb />
self coined up. <lb />
Col. Lucas then went into an <lb />
of the financial question and <lb />
a comparison of the condition of the <lb />
country prior to the demonetization of <lb />
silver and since, and showed how the <lb />
party stands squarely for <lb />
silver. The Democrats have not <lb />
a man in North Car- <lb />
who is not honest silver man. <lb />
Skinner has asked me why d I <lb />
attack Ins record, he has none, he has <lb />
done nothing in Congress but draw <lb />
f-om the government and is <lb />
asking you to send him back. <lb />
I have asked t it he <lb />
will work to put a man in the <lb />
who will vote for a gold standard <lb />
man for the Senate, but can't get him <lb />
u Skinner says Bryan is a <lb />
Populist. hen he makes such a <lb />
statement as that he leads to doubt <lb />
nil he he has not sense enough <lb />
to know better he ought to get out of <lb />
this contest. <lb />
My opponent asks why I did n t <lb />
out of the party when he did I <lb />
thank God that I never march cut <lb />
The Democratic party for the <lb />
best interests of the people I stand <lb />
with if. Then he referred strongly to <lb />
the record of the party and how it had <lb />
kept with the people. <lb />
Skinner says we Pore party above <lb />
country, but hi tarns about so fast that <lb />
it is impossible tell what he loves <lb />
except that he loves office and Harry <lb />
Skinner above everything else. <lb />
time being up Col. Lucas to <lb />
stop here but told the Crowd he had <lb />
else good in his rejoinder. <lb />
All though his speech he was <lb />
cheered and made it so hot for Skin- <lb />
that the latter slipped away two or <lb />
three time.-. <lb />
coming to Greenville I have <lb />
been here today that Cot. <lb />
Jarvis said he heard Skinner lobbying <lb />
in Washington in favor of a bill to pay <lb />
clerks month the year through, <lb />
and fifteen minutes later went on the <lb />
floor of the House and made a speech <lb />
against and against the bid. <lb />
At this Skinner sprang to bis <lb />
and came near causing <lb />
Said he Gov. Jarvis, Dr. <lb />
or any one else says that they are <lb />
and damnable <lb />
there, sir demanded Dr. <lb />
as that old veteran pressed <lb />
towards the speaker's dare <lb />
you use my name in connection with <lb />
The wildest excitement followed for <lb />
a few minutes as people <lb />
around, and in some way Skinner used <lb />
the name of A. L. Blow in connection <lb />
with the others when that gentleman <lb />
also started for him. Skinner hastened <lb />
to apologize to both Dr. and <lb />
Mr. Blow for using their names. <lb />
When quiet was restored Col. Lucas <lb />
continued did not desire to create <lb />
trouble by mentioning this matter, but <lb />
I repeat that I was told today that <lb />
Gov s id th he Skinner <lb />
lobbying in bill to pay <lb />
clerks a month the year through <lb />
and fifteen minutes later he made a <lb />
speech against it and voted against <lb />
you all that r <lb />

ago denouncing Branch had <lb />
voted tor a bill to pay clerks a <lb />
only while Congress was in <lb />
I give you as my authority that <lb />
Gov. Jarvis said this the names of W. <lb />
L. Brown, J. Blount and F. G- <lb />
S inner stepped forward again and <lb />
said I Gov. Jarvis s a <lb />
consummate <lb />
reigned again for a <lb />
minutes, but the crowd dispersed wit <lb />
having any trouble. <lb />
Col. has been severely <lb />
f r g the language he did ill <lb />
reference to Gov. Jarvis, tor besides <lb />
those gentlemen named by Col. Lucas, <lb />
Henry Harding, County Treas- <lb />
J. L. and perhaps numbers <lb />
of others Gov. Jarvis mike the <lb />
statement, and everybody believes that <lb />
what Gov Jarvis said about it is true. <lb />
Upon the whole toe joint discussion <lb />
here was a signal victory for Col. L- <lb />
He more a <lb />

won hundreds of friends among the <lb />
good people of Pitt county. <lb />
