COMMENT. <lb/>
It is that more than half cf the <lb/>
voting population Of Virginia <lb/>
either saw or heard Mr. during <lb/>
his trip through the State, and yet <lb/>
Hanna Co. claim it State. <lb/>
Changes that have just taken <lb/>
in the of Seaboard Air Line <lb/>
railroad indicate that the road is to <lb/>
pass under the of the <lb/>
Southern The <lb/>
predicts that legs than five the <lb/>
Atlantic Coast and every other <lb/>
road of any importance in the coast <lb/>
States between Baltimore Florida, <lb/>
will be under the management <lb/>
of the gigantic Southern system. <lb/>

A vote for any Palmer and <lb/>

every Democrat ought to realize this <lb/>
and not be a party to the election of a <lb/>
man for President who is run soul and <lb/>

AT <lb/>
The County Candidates Met by <lb/>
Crowd. <lb/>
was the day for <lb/>
candidates to speak at J l the parties, <lb/>
Though the weather was disagreeable a <lb/>
large crowd turned out to hear them, <lb/>
the general es being that lie <lb/>
were present. <lb/>
Not all cf the candidates were pres- <lb/>
being unavoidably kept at <lb/>
home, but enough were out to mike <lb/>
some good speeches which were <lb/>
received. <lb/>
The speaking was op by G. M. <lb/>
Tucker, who only a <lb/>
of his candidacy for Sher- <lb/>
He was followed by J. B. Little, one <lb/>
of our nominees for the Legislature, <lb/>
who spoke for of <lb/>
an hour. He dwelt at some <lb/>
the misdoings of the last fusion <lb/>
Legislature, gave statistics showing <lb/>
the difference between of <lb/>
that body and the previous Democratic <lb/>
Legislature, and argued well that it is <lb/>
to the test interest of the people that <lb/>
the next Legislature should be Demo- <lb/>
C. L. Barrett a candidate for <lb/>
the Legislature, followed in an excel- <lb/>
lent speech. The he made <lb/>
to Bryan and Vance were greeted with <lb/>
outbursts applause. He and Mr. <lb/>
Little both won s by their <lb/>
J. J. Laughinghouse, our nominee <lb/>
for the Senate, made the big speech of <lb/>
the day. He spoke about an. hour and <lb/>
a half and was listened to very <lb/>
He said that the <lb/>
is the principal issue before the <lb/>
people and made a forcible argument <lb/>
for silver. to the two metals <lb/>
and their use together as far back as <lb/>
we have any record of the use of <lb/>
he said the Republicans claim <lb/>
our cannot maintain a parity <lb/>
gold and silver, but he <lb/>
exposed the such an <lb/>
absurd showed that silver <lb/>
just prior to its demonetization Wad <lb/>
worth on tile dollar. <lb/>
By apt illustration he showed the <lb/>
effect of destroying halt of -y. <lb/>
Take any two leading c <lb/>
and destroy uncut them see what the <lb/>
result will be. all the hogs in <lb/>
the land and the price of would go <lb/>
b the reach of all <lb/>
rich. Destroy all the corn and you <lb/>
will see flour selling a barrel- <lb/>
We work both horses and on our <lb/>
hum-, destroy all of either animal and <lb/>
many you would be to get <lb/>
even and old steer to plow wild or <lb/>
to church behind. It is same way <lb/>
with money. Take silver tut <lb/>
circulation or rob it of its purchasing <lb/>
value and you see gold going out of the <lb/>
reach of every laboring man and pro- <lb/>
He showed that as silver has <lb/>
since its demonetize <lb/>
the price farm products has <lb/>
aim at the prop . lion <lb/>
Coming down to Stale and county pol- <lb/>
he said many left the Democratic <lb/>
party four years ago because <lb/>
could not support Cleveland. But l hey <lb/>
could not complain of the Stan and <lb/>
county administration, which has been <lb/>
as clean and honest as any State in the <lb/>
Nation can show. He then took <lb/>
the history the misrule and robberies <lb/>
of the Republican party just after the <lb/>
war and as long as they were in power, <lb/>
and in contrast with this held up <lb/>
the excellent administration of the <lb/>
Democratic party hen they overthrew <lb/>
the Republicans referred to the <lb/>
time when county orders in Pitt county <lb/>
under Republican rule were worth only <lb/>
cents and the county burdened with <lb/>
debt, and Democrats raised these orders <lb/>
to their full value, the county <lb/>
Out of debt and gave us lower <lb/>
Speaking of fusion between Re- <lb/>
publicans and Populists he mid no <lb/>
honest man should stay with a party <lb/>
led by Bernard <lb/>
Skinner, who are political traders end <lb/>
always looking an opportunity to <lb/>
sell out. <lb/>
As to his opponent, A. J. <lb/>
fusion for the Senate, be said <lb/>
had served on the I. of <lb/>
with for years, <lb/>
whenever there was a meeting for the <lb/>
levying of taxes was always an <lb/>
advocate of higher taxes, saying he <lb/>
wanted the Commissioners to have <lb/>
enough to get along on and an have a <lb/>
surplus left for emergencies. also <lb/>
says he is not in favor of law, <lb/>
when it is known that he a <lb/>
for it. At Parsers X <lb/>
Roads on Friday was asked by a <lb/>
Democrat in presence of Fred L ox <lb/>
if he was going to vote for <lb/>
and the gold bugs on the county ticket, <lb/>
winch live answered yes. A little <lb/>
he took the same man aside <lb/>
said he ought not to have asked him <lb/>
such a question in the presence of Cox, <lb/>
a Republican, as he had to say yes be- <lb/>
fore him, but he did not intend to vote <lb/>
for any gold bug at all. This shows <lb/>
the duplicity of the man, saying before <lb/>
Republicans that he will vote <lb/>
bogs saying behind their backs that <lb/>
he will not. <lb/>
Mr. Laughinghouse said that he did <lb/>
not want to close his speech without <lb/>
telling his audience something of the <lb/>
two men they were asked to vote for <lb/>
for Congress in this district. He paid <lb/>
a high tribute to Col. W. H. Lucas, <lb/>
tie Democratic nominee. him <lb/>
is a man without conscience, character <lb/>
or credit, and a man w <lb/>
the He then <lb/>
of the d Harry Skinner, the <lb/>
candidate. He said he could point <lb/>
out many men who had paid Skinner <lb/>

also told several i giving <lb/>
here Skinner collected <lb/>
money for northern firms out of our <lb/>
home dealers, pocketed the money and <lb/>

himself that bill had paid by <lb/>

Skinner's office and demanded an ex- <lb/>

other than the well known William <lb/>
now Mayor cf Raleigh, would <lb/>
not accept any such statement and de- <lb/>
the collected money or blood <lb/>
in the spot. He got the money. <lb/>
Mr. Laughinghouse reined in- <lb/>
stances almost similar to this. He also <lb/>
gave the name of a widow whom Skin <lb/>
tier swindled out of and caused <lb/>
he home to be sale to pay <lb/>
it. <lb/>
There, were some who voted <lb/>
for Skinner two years ago, but after <lb/>
