ABSOLUTELY PURE<lb />
Our. Regular <lb />
Washington, July 31st, <lb />
The gold are slowly <lb />
surely lining up Bryan Bad <lb />
Already one of the Cabinet <lb />
Secretary Hoke declared <lb />
for them, and three other members, <lb />
whose names am not at liberty to <lb />
mention at this time, have intimated <lb />
their intention to do the same. <lb />
Smith has not on declared bis <lb />
intention to support the ticket, but he <lb />
has said that if e can possibly arrange <lb />
his time so to be there be will accept <lb />
the invitation which has been extended <lb />
him to preside over a big Bryan and <lb />
meeting to be held <lb />
at Augusta, Ga. August Senators <lb />
Gordon, of Ga. and of Ky. <lb />
who are both gold men. were in Wash- <lb />
this week and they announced <lb />
their m not only to vote for <lb />
and but to work for their <lb />
Senator Gordon has already <lb />
chairman Jones, o the <lb />
committee, that he is to take <lb />
stump the ticket at <lb />
the committee. These things indicate <lb />
a getting together of democrat that <lb />
means victory. <lb />
The District of Columbia democrats <lb />
are ring to lake an active part in <lb />
the campaign ; they can't vote, but they <lb />
ran help to convince those who do vote <lb />
to vote way. A Bryan <lb />
this week <lb />
repudiating the democracy o <lb />
those Federal officials who are drawing <lb />
salaries by the grace of the democratic <lb />
party and who have publicly opposed <lb />
the regular ticket. It is ex- <lb />
that the big democratic <lb />
meeting which will addressed <lb />
by Mr. Bryan will be held in one the <lb />
large used by the late Christian <lb />
Endeavor The <lb />
to make this meeting the <lb />
biggest thing of the kind ever held in <lb />
Washington. <lb />
If Mr. John W. Hayes, General Sec- <lb />
of the Knights of Labor, knows <lb />
what he is talking about, and he <lb />
does, that organization is practically <lb />
for and tree silver. <lb />
Speaking about Una Mr. Haves <lb />
workingmen as a class are in fa- <lb />
TOT office coinage, and they will vote <lb />
for it and fleet Bryan. Labor <lb />
like the Knights of will <lb />
i not, an organizations participate in the <lb />
campaign, but the members in their <lb />
individual will. They want <lb />
free coinage, and in my opinion at leas. <lb />
per coat of the Knights of Labor <lb />
will vote for <lb />
Senator Faulkner, chairman of the <lb />
Democratic Congressional committee, <lb />
returned this week from a visit, to West <lb />
Virginia. Ii. reply to a question as to <lb />
. the outlook in that state, he <lb />
is all right. The silver <lb />
sentiment at present sweeping over my <lb />
state reminds of a prairie fire ; it is <lb />
simply resistless. Furthermore, <lb />
seems to lie going straight on to the <lb />
East; but in spite of its spread we must <lb />
remember that when we are <lb />
the great money power and <lb />
rate interests of the country we have a <lb />
fight on our hands that calls tor united <lb />
efforts and-determined to the close <lb />
of the <lb />
Representative of Ga , who <lb />
has just returned from a trip to Boston, <lb />
I the citizens of the <lb />
talking more about the money <lb />
than the of Washington if <lb />
such a thing is possible. To my utter <lb />
surprise I found that a goodly per cent <lb />
of them were in favor of free silver. <lb />
Men who were in a position to know <lb />
assured me that the cause was making <lb />
rapid strides in every New England <lb />
state, and that if the gain maintained <lb />
its preset ratio Bryan would surely <lb />
carry one or two of them. There <lb />
wasn't a word to be heard about <lb />
or the tariff ; all the enthusiasm <lb />
was on the side of Bryan and silver. <lb />
Though personally an advocate of <lb />
sound money, I am convinced that the <lb />
people of this country have made up <lb />
their minds to try the other system. <lb />
and that Bryan is going to be elected <lb />
President by a tidal wave majority. <lb />
There is considerable growling <lb />
among the more prominent Republicans <lb />
at Mark Manna's dictatorial of <lb />
running things, and among themselves <lb />
they are recalling the last campaign in <lb />
which a wealthy business man under- <lb />
took the duties of chairman the Re- <lb />
publican National Committee, to show <lb />
the politicians how a campaign ought <lb />
to be run and ended by seeing Blaine, <lb />
the most popular Republican ever <lb />
for President, defeated. The <lb />
other millionaire chairman was B. F <lb />
Jones, of Manna seems to <lb />
some of these Republicans of <lb />
Jones, and the Democrats are <lb />
dent that his management of the cam- <lb />
will have the same <lb />
defeat of the Republicans. <lb />
. I THE SEASON OPENS. <lb />
Starts for <lb />
, with a round <lb />
The rapid rolling of trucks early. <lb />
Monday morning, giving forth a sound <lb />
akin to the rumbling of distant thunder, <lb />
told all within hearing, that the season <lb />
of had opened and the golden <lb />
weed was coining in. The first side <lb />
coming on Monday, the weather being <lb />
so warm, prices being not yet <lb />
and most of the farmers Wing <lb />
busy with their curing, everybody was <lb />
surprised that on the first day of the <lb />
season with such when <lb />
no medal effort had made for an <lb />
break, the offerings should <lb />
up to nearly 40.000 <lb />
The ringing the bell at willed <lb />
the buyers together at the Eastern <lb />
Warehouse for the first sale Before <lb />
the sale I <lb />
opened the season in a little Speech of <lb />
welcome to the buyers He also <lb />
thanked for their presence <lb />

past, and .-tat d that as many questions <lb />
had been asked as to prices he wished <lb />
to say that at present everything was <lb />
in the dark and no one could how <lb />

that the bad <lb />
he interest of the pi liters at and <lb />
protect them in way <lb />

Then calling auctioneer B. T. Bail- <lb />
to the front the sale started and the <lb />
piles were knocked off in quick success- <lb />
ion under his rattling music. <lb />
and Man run sale <lb />
made things lively. S. Spain am <lb />

On to the Greenville Warehouse the <lb />
buyers and crowd treat for the second <lb />

The third sale was at Star Ware- <lb />

pounds. CD. run the sale <lb />
in his usual good style. J. G. Bowling, <lb />
the auctioneer, is a new man here, but <lb />
he showed the crowd that he can roll <lb />
bids at a lively rate. Wiley Brown <lb />
manages the floor, W. J. Corbett is <lb />
back as keeper and T. E. Hooker <lb />
is pay clerk this season. <lb />
Planters had the last <lb />
and largest sale about <lb />
pounds on the floor. Ola Forbes run <lb />
the sales and the Mayor would strike <lb />
prices now and then like he was slap- <lb />
ping a tine to some violator wanted <lb />
to give him a big one. R. W. <lb />
who can sing in two keys at <lb />
once, did the auctioneering variations <lb />
from a to z sharp, with W. T. <lb />
Lipscomb to an occasional <lb />
solo. The other force the Planters <lb />
this season arc Earnest Forbes, floor <lb />
manager, E. O. book keep- <lb />
and R. If. Move cashier. <lb />
The four houses nil through had <lb />
good sales and gave general <lb />
satisfaction. <lb />
A strong force of buyers are here <lb />
for the of the season and <lb />
nil make the market lively. Beside <lb />
buyers for the warehouses, there <lb />
are already here J W. Morgan, for the <lb />
A. T. Co., P. II. Gorman, T. E. Rob- <lb />
ft Co. J. S. Jenkins Co., B. E- <lb />

The rejoices that the <lb />
season of begins so <lb />
and throws up its hat for the Green- <lb />

The New Dollar <lb />
The new one dollar silver certificates <lb />
issued by the government are now in <lb />
circulation. Nothing like the new <lb />
notes has ever before been issued <lb />
the government. The design is most <lb />
elaborate is the work of Will II. <lb />
Low. The face of note is an allegory <lb />
entitled Instructing <lb />
History is depicted as a woman re- <lb />
and youth as a lad. <lb />
The background gives a <lb />
of the city of Washington, with the <lb />
Washington the Capitol <lb />
and the malarious marshes of the Po- <lb />
as conspicuous objects. There <lb />
is also in the design an open book, con- <lb />
the introductory words of the <lb />
Federal Constitution- <lb />
Around the. of the note <lb />
the names of celebrated Americans, <lb />
enclosed in or wreaths of <lb />
rel. names are selected somewhat <lb />
at random. They are Washington, <lb />
Jefferson, Franklin, Adams, Hamilton, <lb />
Jackson, Clay, Calhoun, Fulton, Perry, <lb />
Webster, Morse, Gram, <lb />
Sherman, Lincoln, Farragut, Bancroft, <lb />
Hawthorne, Emerson, Cooper Irving <lb />
and Longfellow. <lb />
The reverse of the note bears beau- <lb />
vignette portraits of George and <lb />
Martha Washington. The note has <lb />
been severely by persons who <lb />
were free to admit its artistic excellence. <lb />
The prevailing opinion is that it is not <lb />
suitable for currency that must stand <lb />
the heaviest wear and tear of all de- <lb />
nominations in circulation. It is said <lb />
that it can be more readily counter <lb />
than a less elaborate piece c- <lb />
work. <lb />
The old silver certificates will be <lb />
retired in favor of the new <lb />
Good Advice. <lb />
The great northern papers are be- <lb />
ginning to realize the fact that the <lb />
silver agitation is a serious matter and <lb />
a thing that be laughed down <lb />
or ridiculed; and as a consequence <lb />
all of them have adopted a tone <lb />
of calm, conservative argument. This <lb />
is very encouraging. The one <lb />
at the present time is moderation <lb />
in discussion, the use of facts instead of <lb />
epithets. Many of the advocates of <lb />
gold have been too emphatic and as <lb />
in referring to the silver <lb />
question, and many of the silver <lb />
have led into the same <lb />
