THE REFLECTOR <lb />
Greenville, N. C. <lb />

WEDNESDAY. DECEMBER <lb />
Enter- J it at <lb />
If. C, as second-class mail matter. <lb />
The Scotland Neck Democrat <lb />
has entered upon its eleventh <lb />
volume. The Democrat is one of <lb />
our cleverest, brightest and best <lb />
exchanges. <lb />
We are indebted to Rev- <lb />
R. Hicks, of St. Louis, editor of <lb />
Word and Works, for a copy of <lb />
for 1895. It gives <lb />
the best and most accurate <lb />
forecasts of any publication in <lb />
Notice has been given that <lb />
plication will hi, made to the <lb />
next Legislature to amend <lb />
charter of the town of Green- <lb />
ville. Several other towns are <lb />
on the to be given <lb />
This will be one of <lb />
the evils resulting from a fusion <lb />
Legislature. <lb />
J. C- L- Harris a letter to <lb />
the Washington Post outlines the <lb />
most important measures that <lb />
next Legislature will act upon <lb />
He gives the following as the <lb />
probable Change of <lb />
county government, new election <lb />
law, doing way with challenging <lb />
on day of election, using one <lb />
ticket, polls to keep open long <lb />
as their is anybody to vote, only <lb />
poll holders to be appointed who <lb />
can read read y, charters <lb />
amended, no appropriation to <lb />
the university, no appropriation <lb />
for the Guard, anew oyster <lb />
law, and amended school law. <lb />
Now the question is, can Mr. <lb />
Harris control the incoming leg- <lb />
and have such bills pass- <lb />
ed as he desires. will see in <lb />
the future. He says that <lb />
we will have fusion again in 1896 <lb />
and that it will be much stronger <lb />
than it was at the last election- <lb />
This remains to be seen too, and <lb />
we are not much inclined to the <lb />
belief that Mr. Harris has pro- <lb />
powers. <lb />

TAKE GREAT PLEASURE IN PRESENTING TO THEIR <lb />
MANY FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERS THEIR <lb />
WINTER <lb />
Tobacco shipments from Green- <lb />
ville have grown so large that <lb />
agent Moore us his present <lb />
warehouse does not afford <lb />
room for handling it in <lb />
connection with the other <lb />
quantities of freight- He <lb />
is trying to get the railroad com- <lb />
to build another warehouse <lb />
to be used for tobacco delivery. <lb />
The n l s-row <lb />
tobacco business makes this <lb />
additional a necessity <lb />
and we hope it will be built at <lb />
An unofficial list of mom <lb />
elect to the Congress <lb />
has been coin oiled by the Clerk <lb />
of the House. The list is <lb />
up to December <lb />
gives the Republicans <lb />
the Democrats and the <lb />
Populists In the present Con- <lb />
there are Democrats, <lb />
Republicans and Populists. <lb />
It will be seen that North Caro- <lb />
furnishes half of the <lb />
lists in the next Congress, and <lb />
they have only half s many in <lb />
the next Congress as in this. <lb />
It seems they were defeated as <lb />
well as the Democrats. <lb />
Tho members of Congress <lb />
the North do not seem to favor <lb />
Secretary financial plan. <lb />
They say it expands the <lb />
Southern members generally <lb />
favor it and their reason for <lb />
it is that it does in some de- <lb />
increase the volume of <lb />
money. Thus it ever <lb />
we want the North opposes; <lb />
what they is acceptable <lb />
to us. We need not expect any <lb />
financial legislation from the <lb />
present session of Congress. Mr. <lb />
Woodard says tho repeal of the <lb />
ten tax on banks will not <lb />
pass either. We don't look for <lb />
much favorable legislation from <lb />
the incoming so the <lb />
people had about as well make <lb />
up their minds not to fret but to <lb />
do the best they can under exist- <lb />
circumstances. The interests <lb />
of the United States are so varied <lb />
that there always will be more or <lb />
less friction in legislation <lb />
The mandamus proceedings <lb />
against the State canvassing <lb />
Board in the of C. M- Ber- <lb />
against John E- Woodard <lb />
came up before Judge <lb />
Raleigh on last Friday. The <lb />
case was ably argued by Judge <lb />
Whitaker for Mr- Bernard and <lb />
Col. for Mr. Seawell, his <lb />
election depending upon re- <lb />
of and by <lb />
F- S. Spruill C- B. Aycock for <lb />
Mr. Woodard. Judge Bynum <lb />
the injunction <lb />
that the case was the wrong <lb />
court, that ho had no author- <lb />
to compel the Board to ex- <lb />
as to fraud in the returns. <lb />
enables tho State <lb />
Board of Canvassers to complete <lb />
their work and adjourn. Notice <lb />
of was given by the con- <lb />
The outlook to another <lb />
bond issue. Saturday's papers <lb />
reported the gold reserve had <lb />
again gone below tho limit, with <lb />
still further drafts likely to be <lb />
made at once upon it. The bond <lb />
issuing has become mote <lb />
than the people admire, <lb />
and Congress should hurry tho <lb />
enactment of some financial meas- <lb />
that w bring about desired <lb />
relief. <lb />
the motion in tho Senate to <lb />
take up the free-sugar bill, Sena- <lb />
tors and Jarvis were <lb />
those recorded the <lb />
affirmative ; or, in other <lb />
they Senate to go <lb />
ahead in effort to make <lb />
article even cheaper to <lb />
people. <lb />
Senators and Ransom <lb />
did not vote no explanation <lb />
of their pairs wore made. <lb />
Tho Gold is <lb />
thirteen years old. Thad Man- <lb />
gets up a paper of which <lb />
his town ought to be very proud- <lb />
It is a credit to the profession. <lb />
Ex-Congressman Ewart, and a <lb />
member of the House in <lb />
present Legislature, does not <lb />
hesitate to express upon <lb />
any public question. He has <lb />
been both by News <lb />
Observer and the Charlotte <lb />
Observer during the week- <lb />
Some things he says we presume <lb />
are not relished much by some of <lb />
the leaders. For instance, that <lb />
Mr. by no means has been <lb />
promised long term in the <lb />
Senate. He also says there will <lb />
be a spirited contest over both <lb />
the long and short term. That <lb />
the national Republicans favor <lb />
the election of two Republicans <lb />
from North Carolina. That this <lb />
is impossible- He declares <lb />
himself a candidate for of tho <lb />
places. Ho expresses the <lb />
ion that the present Legislature <lb />
will be conservative and then <lb />
mentions a few things likely to <lb />
be done which will radical <lb />
changes in existing affairs. These <lb />
interviews are interesting in their <lb />
suggestion at the present time. <lb />

Tuesday a big racket was made <lb />
in Mr. Leslie Dawson's store. Mr- <lb />

cut and badly <lb />
ed by the brothers. He <lb />
was cut on his legs in two places <lb />
and his face an, I arm were badly <lb />
bruised. His injuries are painful <lb />
but not dangerous. <lb />
It seems, from the best than we <lb />
can learn, that Mess. N. J- Rouse <lb />
ft-d W. D. Pollock have obtained <lb />
judgment against Mr. Leslie <lb />
Dawson for a northern creditor. <lb />
The case that was being tried be- <lb />
fore Clerk Bright was of sup- <lb />
proceedings, <lb />
ting the ownership of property. <lb />
Miss Dawson, daughter of <lb />
Mr. Levi Dawson, was a witness <lb />
in the case, and at her request <lb />
a delicacy about going to <lb />
the court her evidence was <lb />
taken in Mr. Leslie Dawson's <lb />
store. Mr. Levi Dawson and his <lb />
sons were excluded from the court <lb />
while her evidence was taken. <lb />
After she had given In her <lb />
signed the report of it <lb />
she went out to where her father <lb />
brothers were. In a very <lb />
short time Mr. Levi Dawson came <lb />
and went towards Mr. House, <lb />
cursing him Baying he <lb />
had insulted his daughter. <lb />
Mess. A. J. Loftin nod D. E- <lb />

it was a mistake, that the <lb />
had been conducted as <lb />
courteously as could be, but this <lb />
failed to quiet matters. Tho <lb />

At the In before Mayor <lb />
Hill, as examination was waived <lb />
by Dawson's, no testimony <lb />
was taken, but Mr- Levi Dawson <lb />
made a statement to the effect <lb />
that his daughter had told him <lb />
when she came out from the ex- <lb />
that Mr. had in- <lb />
her and she could not pro <lb />
herself, and that he told her <lb />
he would then fol- <lb />

The Stewart Hotel has a very <lb />
unpleasant guest, in fact, so much <lb />
so, that be has to be guarded ail <lb />
the time to keep him from doing <lb />
himself others harm. <lb />
is name is James . Barn <lb />
hill, a young man about twenty- <lb />
six or twenty eight years of age, <lb />
who came here last Friday, to at- <lb />
tend the Conference, from Bethel, <lb />
N. C. After his arrival he went <lb />
immediately to the Stewart Hotel <lb />
and registered, and has since <lb />
then become insane- His people <lb />
were but as yet no word <lb />
has been received from them. <lb />
It is indeed a pathetic sight to <lb />
see a young, intelligent, <lb />
man in his <lb />
from home and and more <lb />
especially is it so in this case <lb />
when one has become acquainted <lb />
with his life's history, and the <lb />
causes which led to his insanity. <lb />
He was a poor boy and had an <lb />
old mother and sister who looked <lb />
to him for their e <lb />

self, but studied so hard at school <lb />
and since, that his mind has be- <lb />
come impaired- His mother and <lb />
sister are still depend, upon <lb />
for living, <lb />
Unless the authorities hear <lb />
from his people by tomorrow <lb />
morning he will be taken to bis <lb />
home, in Pitt county, and turned <lb />
over to the sheriff. <lb />
Officer G. W. Crabtree, of <lb />
Durham, arrived Saturday with <lb />
Mr. J. L. Barnhill and placed him <lb />
in charge of Sheriff King. This <lb />
is one of the most pitiful cases <lb />
