The candidates who came down <lb />
say the Populist party was get <lb />
ting too close to the Republicans <lb />
who only want to use the Third <lb />
party as the tool to get in office. <lb />
Marion Butler Ventilated. <lb />
A correspondent at <lb />
writing to the Charlotte <lb />
quotes Mr. H. L Greene as <lb />
saying in one of bis political <lb />
speeches a few days ago <lb />
do you want to know who <lb />
you are following You are fol- <lb />
lowing a man who nine years ago <lb />
swore to a libel, and afterwards <lb />
hired a friend of his to steal the <lb />
paper out of the society library <lb />
at Chapel Hill, in order that he <lb />
might save himself from public <lb />
condemnation. This is the kind <lb />
of a man you honest Populists <lb />
and Republicans are allowing to <lb />
lead you in the contest <lb />
the party. Such a <lb />
man is Mr- Marion The <lb />

WHY FUSION HAS NOT FUSED <lb />
It has engineered on <lb />
the part of the by <lb />
Pritchard, tried to or <lb />
a Republican party <lb />
in North Dr. Molt who <lb />
wanted to drive cut the <lb />
and have respectable <lb />

Judge Russell, who said the <lb />
were no more entitled to <lb />
vote than the savages in Africa, <lb />
and on the part of the Populists <lb />
by Butler, who was fond <lb />
of saying in his the <lb />
that the white in <lb />
this government Lad a right <lb />
to it, Buck Kitchin whoso <lb />
and kind wonts about <lb />
the are known of all <lb />
and S. Otho Wilson who is right- <lb />
distrusted by every with <lb />
whom he ever had <lb />
These KM the six men who are at <lb />
the head of the fusion movement <lb />
and who will reap all the rewards <lb />
if it succeeds. Is it surprising <lb />
that a large number of <lb />
who have enjoyed the advantages <lb />
of public schools, refuse to assist <lb />
in the success of men who have <lb />
devoted a life-time to abusing <lb />
their race, not one of whom has <lb />
ever turned over his hand to help <lb />
their education or material <lb />
Evidences multiply that <lb />
who self-respect <lb />
will not stultify themselves by <lb />
pulling chestnuts out of the fire <lb />
for the men who are their worst <lb />
enemies in all parties. <lb />
2- In Wilson county the color- <lb />
ed Republicans held a meeting <lb />
and denounced fusion. The <lb />
son Advance thus tells how a <lb />
had fun at the expense of a <lb />
At the Republican mass moot- <lb />
last Saturday A. W. Jones, <lb />
the orator of Wilson, got <lb />
off a good joke on Mr- Grice, a <lb />
Populist of this county. He said <lb />
that he attended a great <lb />
in which he saw acted the <lb />
history of the parties tor the last <lb />
two years. He saw Mr. Cleve- <lb />
land come upon the stage and <lb />
announce his intention of purify- <lb />
the Democratic party of <lb />
bribes and ballot-box <lb />
He had a large sifter in which he <lb />
poured the broken elements of <lb />
the party and he and Mr. <lb />
the sifting. The <lb />
whole party stood the test except <lb />
Mr. Grice. He dropped out <lb />
Mr. Grice is the man who, in a <lb />
Populist convention some time <lb />
ago, stated that he had bought <lb />
votes. Jones, speech was <lb />
highly sensational- <lb />
3- In Murfreesboro the <lb />
lists held a meeting, and the In- <lb />
says that Walter Reynolds <lb />
replied to John F. News and <lb />
T. Griffith in this strain and <lb />
utterly demoralized the Pops who <lb />
are begging for <lb />
had been a member of the <lb />
People's party and intended to <lb />
vote that ticket, but the speeches <lb />
have heard this afternoon have <lb />
convinced me that the People's <lb />
party is made out of thieves that<lb />
came from tin Democratic party. <lb />
If they were thieves in tho Demo- <lb />
party, they will likewise be <lb />
thieves in the party, and <lb />
I cannot support any such men- <lb />
No, fellow citizens, the <lb />
party will not do. It is the <lb />
forbidden fruit with which the <lb />
tempted our first parents <lb />
and caused th ca to fail. If <lb />
go into that party, our party, the <lb />
Republican, will fall to pieces <lb />
will no voice in this gov- <lb />
Have nothing to do <lb />
with the People's <lb />
4- The colored Republicans of <lb />
Beaufort county held a meeting <lb />
a few days in which they <lb />
passed resolutions denouncing <lb />
fusion. We quote <lb />
we, the Republican <lb />
voters of Beaufort county in con- <lb />
assembled, do after full <lb />
investigation find and conclude <lb />
That whereas the chairman of <lb />
our county executive committee <lb />
ailed to call a convention of the <lb />
party, alleging, as he <lb />
stated, that he believed that the <lb />
party known as the <lb />
now asking our support in <lb />
the coming election, was by mis- <lb />
trying to procure <lb />
the endorsement and support of <lb />
our party, posing as our friend, <lb />
claiming and promising, and only <lb />
in secret advocating the change <lb />
of the system of county <lb />
government, which promise and <lb />
pledge was inconsistent with the <lb />
action of that party in its <lb />
at Raleigh which passed <lb />
upon that question, and withdrew <lb />
that plank from its platform. <lb />
It now further appearing to <lb />
convention that the People's <lb />
party are advocating measures <lb />
such as the Australian ballot sys- <lb />
which would disfranchise <lb />
three-fourths of the colored voters <lb />
of our State. Its advocacy of the <lb />
levy and division of the school <lb />
taxes, which would deprive the <lb />
children of the colored race of <lb />
about nine tenths of the funds <lb />
now appropriated to them yearly. <lb />
They closed by resolving to <lb />
oppose parties whose plat- <lb />
forms are contrary to the <lb />
of the Republican party, and <lb />
hence we-cannot and will not <lb />
with the People's <lb />
These are the four reasons why <lb />
many salt respecting will <lb />
refuse to support the Fusion <lb />
ticket. The nomination of Jim <lb />
Young will help fusion some in <lb />
Wake, but many intelligent <lb />
in the East will stay at <lb />
home or vote for their Democrat- <lb />
friends. There are more who <lb />
will do this than the of <lb />
any party dream about. They <lb />
are men who cannot be bought or <lb />
deceived. They are Republicans <lb />
who refuse to be led by the nose <lb />
by their worst enemies. They <lb />
are quiet, but election day will <lb />
cause enthusiastic Fusion to <lb />
open their eyes. <lb />
We know what we are talking <lb />
News Ob- <lb />
believer in <lb />
but there <lb />
THE SOUTH BECOMING BETTER <lb />
KNOWN IN WEST. <lb />
The following extracts are <lb />
a letter written by Iowa real <lb />
estate nod immigration agency in <lb />
the South Tho latter sent the <lb />
letter to the Southern States ma <lb />
of Baltimore, with <lb />
permission to use such parts of <lb />
it as did not relate to private <lb />
business <lb />
I am not a <lb />
special providences, <lb />
seem to be events on all sides <lb />
which tend to drive immigration <lb />
to the South. The West is com- <lb />
to change its methods of <lb />
agriculture, placing n <lb />
whatever in rainfall, and <lb />
the irrigating ditch is too limited <lb />
to the public <lb />
ally. Then, again, the <lb />
terrible drought throughout the <lb />
Northwest coming us just at <lb />
the time that there is so much <lb />
agitation in manufacturing com- <lb />
and strikes, that <lb />
who have never thought of resort- <lb />
to farming now seriously <lb />
considering the necessity of till- <lb />
the soil and owning a home, <lb />
so as to be independent of the <lb />
common master, capital, in <lb />
hands. Then, again, climate and <lb />
cheap lands are two most potent <lb />
incentives. <lb />
logically-minded men are <lb />
now amazed at their past stupid- <lb />
and only beginning to <lb />
wonder why they did not consider <lb />
the reason. <lb />
always knew these facts, but <lb />
did not think ; know it now, but <lb />
and it a task to interest the <lb />
pie because of life time habit and <lb />
teaching. I am, however, glad to <lb />
notice how things are <lb />
changing. The circulation of the <lb />
Southern is <lb />
awakening an interest which will <lb />
never cease until thousands know <lb />
the facts exist. To-day I <lb />
met an intelligent farmer to whom <lb />
I have been handing my copy of <lb />
the Southern States magazine. <lb />
Me says to me s you first <lb />
commenced giving me this ma- <lb />
I merely read, here and <lb />
there, a line or short article, but <lb />
recently I have read every word, <lb />
and I tell you, sir, <lb />
the Star of Empire will take its <lb />
I want to know when you <lb />
are going to make your trip <lb />
South ; will go with <lb />
Highest of all in Leavening U. S. Report <lb />
PURE <lb />
The Real Issue. <lb />
What is the <lb />
Mr Archibald Brady, ex-post- <lb />
master of Charlotte, and a good <lb />
Republican, has this to say of <lb />
shall vote for <lb />
cans wherever they are put up, if <lb />
they are good men. I think <lb />
is the worst possible disaster <lb />
that could have befallen the Re- <lb />
publican party, and some more <lb />
of them will think so with me <lb />
before many more weeks roll <lb />
around. But when my party <lb />
goes outside and takes up men <lb />
from other ranks, it leaves me the <lb />
right to go outside, and so I shall <lb />
exercise the right of the free <lb />
American citizen vote for <lb />
i please. That's <lb />
here I <lb />
motive power of <lb />
Why do men toil <lb />
Will the people of North Cum j L not the motive f <lb />
Una condone the deeds of ; v would like to have a photo- <lb />
Republican party in the south who sells <lb />
during the and consent to a; o, the man <lb />
at anything without <lb />
revival of tho pernicious rule then <lb />
established <lb />
That is the question pure and <lb />
simple which is to be decided at <lb />
tho ballot box on November 6- <lb />
Every other issue sinks into in- <lb />
significance in comparison with <lb />
this. For the last decade and <lb />
more the Democrats have con- <lb />
trolled affairs in North Carolina. <lb />
We have had one of the best gov- <lb />
the lowest taxes and <lb />
tho purest judiciary of any State <lb />
in Union. Tho rights and in- <lb />
of the people have been <lb />
guarded and preserved. <lb />
No so, during the years of Re- <lb />
publican rule just after the war. <lb />
We were then the sport of knaves <lb />
and the prey of carpet-baggers. <lb />
Corruption walked unblushing <lb />
into our courts and legislative <lb />
halls; debaucheries were <lb />
the ballots of the <lb />
without any effort at conceal- <lb />
Our treasuries were loot- <lb />
ed, the hands of the people were <lb />
tied, soldiers were at <lb />
the ballot boxes, spoliations were, <lb />
facilitated by legislation and the <lb />
judiciary was It was <lb />
in a word, a saturnalia <lb />
in the history of any <lb />
try, and an era of <lb />
such as was never before <lb />
seen in a free republic. <lb />
The election of the present <lb />
ticket, in the face of the open <lb />
trades being daily made to divide <lb />
up the spoils, would amount in- <lb />
deed to a proclamation that the <lb />
people of this great common <lb />
wealth are ready to return to <lb />
those degenerate days and sub- <lb />
merge and our most val <lb />
institutions. <lb />
Are we prepared to make such <lb />
a confession to acquiesce in a re- <lb />
so calamitous News-Ob- <lb />

THE REFLECTOR. <lb />
Greenville, N. C. <lb />
Editor <lb />
WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBER 7th 1894 <lb />
Entered at th at Greenville, <lb />
K. c., is second-class mail matter. <lb />
Alter getting out the last issue <lb />
of the Reflector we concluded, <lb />
as there was still much good <lb />
work that could be done in the <lb />
few remaining days of the cam- <lb />
to send out another issue <lb />
before the election, hence this <lb />
copy goes ahead tho regular <lb />
publication day. It has required <lb />
considerable work to do this, <lb />
we don't mind the work when the <lb />
Democratic party is to be <lb />
thereby. we ask that <lb />
you look over this issue carefully <lb />
and do all you can for the success <lb />
of the ticket on Tuesday. It will <lb />
be noticed that this paper is dated <lb />
the usual day of publication, so <lb />
you need not look for another on <lb />
Wednesday morning, but as soon <lb />
as the returns are in so that a <lb />
result of the election can be <lb />
ascertained we will issue a small <lb />
extra giving the news and letting <lb />
you know how large the Demo- <lb />
majority is in the comity, <lb />
district and State. <lb />
HOW TO VOTE. <lb />
Vote for F. G- James for the <lb />
Senate- <lb />
Vote for J. D- Cos and S- M. <lb />
Jones for tho House of <lb />
Vote for Willis R- Williams for <lb />
Superior Court Clerk. <lb />
Vote for R. W. King for Sheriff. <lb />
Vote for Henry Harding tor <lb />
Register of Deeds- <lb />
Vote for John Flanagan for <lb />
Treasurer. <lb />
Vote for Dr. <lb />
for Coroner. <lb />
Vote for J B. Kilpatrick for <lb />
Surveyor. <lb />
Vote for the Democratic <lb />
date for Constable in your town- <lb />
ship- <lb />
Vote for W. A, B- Branch for <lb />
Congress. <lb />
Vote for John E- for <lb />
Solicitor- <lb />
Vote for S. Tate for State <lb />
Treasurer. <lb />
Vote for the <lb />
Judges for both the Supreme and <lb />
Superior Courts. <lb />
In fact and in short, vote the <lb />
straight Democratic ticket from <lb />
end, and <lb />
a single name. Do this and you <lb />
do your duty as a citizen who <lb />
loves good government and is op- <lb />
posed to a return of Radicalism <lb />
in North Carolina. <lb />
When we hear of old time <lb />
cussing Democrats swearing <lb />
in night meetings to put <lb />
themselves into office we exclaim <lb />
a fall, my countrymen <lb />
What a <lb />
If you vote for E- A- for <lb />
Superior Court Clerk you vote <lb />
for a man who while in office <lb />
turned against the party that <lb />
honored him with it and used his <lb />
efforts to destroy that party. <lb />
The now get nearly <lb />
half the school fund of Pitt <lb />
They pay only one-fifth of <lb />
it. That is under Democratic <lb />
rule. Third party rule would <lb />
only give them what they paid. <lb />
Many men voted th <lb />
Populist in 1892, when the <lb />
party professed to have some <lb />
principles. Now that principle <lb />
has been sacrificed in favor of <lb />
these men should vote the <lb />
Democratic ticket. <lb />
Once upon a time a certain <lb />
white man turned Republican. <lb />
Certain Democrats wanted to <lb />
know how he felt turning <lb />
Now somebody else is <lb />
to st into that camp. <lb />
Wonder how he feels <lb />
Wonder if Col. Harry Skinner <lb />
will pat the fusion candidate for <lb />
the Senate on the head and in- <lb />
him as the next Senator <lb />
from Pitt county, and then on <lb />
election day vote for the Demo- <lb />
nominee, as he did two <lb />
years ago <lb />
Out of the taxes paid <lb />
in Pitt county each year, only a <lb />
little over is paid on land. <lb />
How would you land owners like <lb />
to pay the other and let <lb />
all those fellows who have <lb />
money and notes pay nothing. <lb />
That is the Third party plan. <lb />
Third party men want land to <lb />
pay all taxes. Think of it. You <lb />
who own land valued at now <lb />
pay their plan you <lb />
would pay And a certain <lb />
merchant in Greenville who now <lb />
pays about taxes would not <lb />
pay one cent. Do you like that <lb />

MANY FRIENDS AND CUSTOMERS THEIR <lb />

FALL WINTER <lb />
which has been selected with special reference to the trade in <lb />
this locality. It includes the pick of the market in Fresh <lb />
Fall Winter Styles and not less astonishing than the <lb />

---------are here to compete with <lb />
We are after your patronage expect to get it by <lb />
value received; we do not want it on terms. <lb />
pose to inaugurate the rarest bargain season we have ever <lb />
sided over. A half-hour spent in looking over our stock will <lb />
give you some idea of the popular styles and we can only hope <lb />
that it will be as much pleasure for you to see as for us to show <lb />
our goods. <lb />
THE GREAT QUESTION. <lb />
What Has the Democratic Party <lb />
Done <lb />
EDITORIAL NOTES. <lb />
Show your manhood <lb />

the <lb />
-ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT WE CARRY- <lb />
Bo sure that you <lb />
straight Democratic <lb />
scratching. <lb />
Give your condemnation to <lb />
by voting the straight Dem- <lb />
ticket. <lb />
If you vote for Harry Skinner <lb />
you vote for a man who seems <lb />
anything for office. <lb />
If you the first district to <lb />
be properly represented in Con <lb />
vote for Branch. <lb />
A vote for tho Democratic Leg- <lb />
ticket is a vote to <lb />
good government in North <lb />
Carolina. <lb />
Poll tax in several counties is <lb />
over If yon colored people <lb />
want it the same here, vote the <lb />
Third party ticket. <lb />
Willis R- Williams going to <lb />
be elected Clerk of the Superior <lb />
Court. Put in your vote him <lb />
and help swell his majority. <lb />
Could you ask for better county <lb />
officers than Dick King, Henry <lb />
Harding and Join Flanagan have <lb />
made If not go vote for them- <lb />
If you vote a fusion ticket you <lb />
are encouraging the party that <lb />
holds secret night meetings with <lb />
the and them <lb />
Vote tor every Democrat on the <lb />
ticket. Take no chances. It will <lb />
be too late to say what you <lb />
have done when the opportunity <lb />
is past. <lb />
It seems to be strangely true <lb />
that when a man leaves the Dem- <lb />

It has elected the only <lb />

It has saved to the people <lb />

bounty. <lb />
It has abolished COO useless <lb />

It has restored over <lb />

It has repealed the law which <lb />

It has passed the best antitrust <lb />

One of our popular young men <lb />
went to circus Tuesday <lb />
taking a lady friend with him- <lb />
After the performance they went <lb />
into the menagerie and walked <lb />
slowly through it looking at the <lb />
animals. This interested the <lb />
young man very much and he <lb />
consciously got ahead of his com- <lb />
After the circuit <lb />
of the tent he thought it time to <lb />
leave and taking hold of the lady's <lb />
arm, as he supposed, started to <lb />
leave- Turning to speak to her <lb />

found that he had changed part- <lb />
and had taken a colored <lb />
woman- The young lady was a <lb />
few feet behind almost convulsed <lb />
