OUR NATIONAL CAPITOL. <lb />
of the <lb />
Washington, D- C, Oct. h, <lb />
As the day of election approach- <lb />
es the Republicans are getting <lb />
more more sanguine that they <lb />
are going to sweep the country. <lb />
The Democrats, however, are <lb />
laying low working hard. <lb />
They are confident of surprising <lb />
the Republicans the 6th in <lb />
New York, Illinois, Indiana, Wis- <lb />
and the It is well <lb />
by Reflector readers <lb />
that the Republicans hope for <lb />
Populist victory in the South and <lb />
Democrats hope for Populist <lb />
in the West. The reason is <lb />
plain. They are working against <lb />
each other us ever and neither <lb />
side cares a straw as to the <lb />
fit to be derived by their <lb />
list brethren. Wherever they can <lb />
use the Populists to ride in pow <lb />
they doing it, <lb />
To forecast the election, <lb />
at both headquarters <lb />
size it up as follows ; Hill will be <lb />
elected Governor of New York <lb />
and Tammany will likely be de- <lb />
in the city. Illinois and <lb />
Delaware will have Democratic <lb />
legislatures elect Democratic <lb />
Senators, Bryan may possibly <lb />
win in Nebraska, but not <lb />
; Wilson will have a close rub <lb />
in West Virginia; Republicans <lb />
will gain five Congressmen in <lb />
Pennsylvania, two in New York, <lb />
two in Michigan, one in <lb />
about ten from the West and <lb />
South. A very conservative <lb />
mate of the standing of the next <lb />
House, Democrats, Re- <lb />
publicans and Populists. With <lb />
these figures the Democrats can <lb />
organize, for the Populists will <lb />
all support Crisp for Speaker as <lb />
against Reed. Both Simpson and <lb />
Pence, the Populist leaders, have <lb />
been heard to say that as between <lb />
the two the full Populist strength <lb />
would go to Crisp, but there may <lb />
be an effort to make Simpson or <lb />
Weaver Speaker, should the <lb />
Populists demand it of the Demo- <lb />
with threats that otherwise <lb />
they will vote for Reed. In this <lb />
emergency the Democratic ad- <lb />
ministration would certainly re- <lb />
the support of the Populists <lb />
on every administration measure <lb />
and would have all the clerkships <lb />
and committee chairmanships. <lb />
But this is mere talk, for there <lb />
are very few Democrats who do <lb />
not expect to retain tie House. <lb />
On the other hand the <lb />
cans have already conceded the <lb />
Senate to the Democrats, and it <lb />
is conceded by all sides that if the <lb />
tariff bill bad been passed six <lb />
months earlier the Republicans <lb />
would have been swept utterly <lb />
of existence, for the downfall of <lb />
business so enthusiastically pie- <lb />
by tho Republicans should <lb />
the tariff bill become a law has <lb />
been met by the great business <lb />
revival and the upheaval in the <lb />
price of raw <lb />
The unexpected flop of Speaker <lb />
Reed, over to the Democratic <lb />
ideas of a reduced tariff is <lb />
a great deal of talk here. Re- <lb />
publicans are dumbfounded. They <lb />
understand it to be a challenge to <lb />
on the Presidential <lb />
nomination question. It was in <lb />
Michigan Mr. Reed, said <lb />
It is well known <lb />
that is fins all over <lb />
for the Republican nomination in <lb />
So is Allison, Harrison, and <lb />
Reed- Allison is popular because <lb />
of his tariff and Reed <lb />
knows it is Irving to crop his <lb />
wings. As it looks at present <lb />
will be the <lb />
in As to who will be the <lb />
Democratic it is too ear-, <lb />
to conjecture. Gov. Campbell <lb />
of Ohio, Stone, of <lb />
Bryan, of Nebraska, of <lb />
Kentucky, and of <lb />
New York, Stevenson, of <lb />
and are all possibilities. <lb />
If Bryan should happen to win in <lb />
Nebraska the ticket might be <lb />
an Crisp. Four influential pa- <lb />
in Pennsylvania, three in <lb />
New York and two in Ohio say <lb />
Crisp should the man- <lb />
The headquarters <lb />

from every district but the <lb />
good hopes there. <lb />
Mr. is very popular in <lb />
Washington his district is <lb />
closely watched. White people <lb />
of all political parties here can't <lb />
understand how any white man, <lb />
be he Populist or can <lb />
aid Cheatham either directly or <lb />
indirectly, but, as the old saying <lb />
goes, depends upon a <lb />

boys from Mrs. by force <lb />

alimony of a month to be <lb />
paid to Mrs. while the <lb />
suit is pending- it will be <lb />
that Mrs. is the <lb />
daughter of ex-Congressman Ken- <lb />
Rayner, of North Carolina. <lb />
A story leaked out here last <lb />
week that though dating back to <lb />
before the Democratic State <lb />
Convention of 1892, will be of in- <lb />
to North Carolinians. A <lb />
close acquaintance of the late Col. <lb />
L. L Polk told your <lb />
dent last night that when the <lb />
name of Julian S- Carr was men- <lb />
for Governor, Col. Polk <lb />
was delighted and immediately <lb />
declared that whatever the <lb />
might do toward putting up <lb />
another State ticket, he would <lb />
use his whole strength tor Carr. <lb />
Polk asked a friend of Col. Carr <lb />
to come to his office and talk over <lb />
the matter, whereupon he told <lb />
this friend that the Alliance in <lb />
North Carolina be con- <lb />
trolled by him in this mat- <lb />
and that he liked Mr. Carr so <lb />
much that he could get the entire <lb />
support for him, provided Mr. <lb />
Carr would write him a <lb />
j letter by claiming <lb />
I to be in sympathy with the Alli- <lb />
in its movements, Polk de- <lb />
that he would only show <lb />
he letter very cautiously to the <lb />
Alliance. This, said will <lb />
give Mr. Carr the Alliance vote <lb />
in the State Convention and elect <lb />
him Governor by an overwhelm <lb />
majority. This friend left <lb />
Washington to Durham <lb />
to see Col Carr about it, where <lb />
upon Mr. Carr is reported as say- <lb />
with great emphasis, <lb />
Col. Polk that I appreciate his in <lb />
my behalf, and that no <lb />
one sympathizes with tho farmers <lb />
of North Carolina as I do, but if <lb />
I thought by writing that letter it <lb />
would make me President of tho <lb />
United States I not be <lb />
found my Demo- <lb />
in that So this end- <lb />
ed it. Dr. Sanderlin received the <lb />
Alliance support in the <lb />
and Gov. Elias Carr was <lb />
nominated. Had the Alliance <lb />
vote that Col. Polk about <lb />
been added to the support ac- <lb />
corded Mr. J. S. Carr his <lb />
would have been assured. <lb />
Thanks be to heaven that the <lb />
sentiment which actuated Henry <lb />
Clay to be right than be <lb />
actuated Mr. Carr with <lb />
reference to gubernatorial <lb />
nomination. <lb />
Senator Faulkner says ho feels <lb />
confident from advices received <lb />
from all parts of the that <lb />
the Democrats will control the <lb />
nest House of Representatives by <lb />
a good majority. <lb />

As the 6th of November draws <lb />
nearer, Democrats every- <lb />

than Mrs. Jarvis <lb />
so approachable, affable so <lb />
thoroughly interested in every- <lb />
thing that concerns North Caro <lb />
that all the people here from <lb />
the State liked and admired her. <lb />
Governor Jarvis was also very <lb />
Ha proved himself an <lb />
aggressive, hard working, able <lb />
Senator Pitt ought to be <lb />
of him. <lb />
Marion is now doing his <lb />
level bast to destroy our system <lb />
of county government, which two <lb />
years ago he pronounced the <lb />
bulwark of our safety, and on <lb />
which he discoursed thus in his <lb />
are in favor of the present <lb />
system of county government as <lb />
long as there is a single county <lb />
that is saved by it from African <lb />
and Rule. We will <lb />
they would have paid before the <lb />
law passed. <lb />
Just now our Baptist friends <lb />
are erecting a handsome brick <lb />
church on the same street on <lb />
which the Methodist parsonage <lb />
stands and only two hundred feet <lb />
away from it They are also re- <lb />
quired to cover the building with <lb />
tin. Before the law <lb />
was repealed they got quotations <lb />
on tin at per box. They <lb />
decided to wait until tho new tar- <lb />
law went into effect, and yes- <lb />
they bought their tin at <lb />
per box. The new tariff bill <lb />
has saved them more than forty <lb />
dollars in this one item. They <lb />
will besides save money on their <lb />
nails, and hinges and locks and <lb />
other hardware. <lb />
These are facts. Let those <lb />
who doubt ask Mr. J. A. Clay well <lb />
forever preach that this h. the Methodists fifty- <lb />
government founded by two fan under <lb />
the courage, framed by the <lb />
and won by the patriotism <lb />
of white men, and for the benefit <lb />
of all citizens alike- Therefore <lb />
it is right, ought to be and must <lb />
be managed by white men <lb />
of 1892. <lb />
Marion Butler was right <lb />
he wrote thus, and we do him the <lb />
credit to believe that he meant <lb />
what he said; but he have <lb />
the Senatorial itch then as badly <lb />
as he has it now, and didn't see a <lb />
vacant chair that he thought he <lb />
might be boosted into by the aid <lb />
of Republican votes- That's <lb />
what's the matter with Marion <lb />
ambition, to gratify which he <lb />
swallows all his patriotic <lb />
of two years ago, consorts <lb />
with the element he deemed dis- <lb />
reputable and dangerous then, <lb />
and conspires with them to <lb />
troy the by <lb />
the wisdom and won by the pat- <lb />
of white Marion is <lb />
no Star- <lb />
law. <lb />
Let those who ask our <lb />
honest Republican friend, Pink <lb />
Hildebrand, how much the <lb />
saved on tin because the <lb />
law was repealed. <lb />
This is only one of many in- <lb />
stances showing how the Demo, <lb />
party is redeeming its <lb />
pledges to make goods cheaper. <lb />
Morganton Herald. <lb />
Capt W. Mason is <lb />
the point in his speeches that <lb />
the leaders of the Third party <lb />
movement in North Carolina were <lb />
in the Democratic State <lb />
He is consumed by an, ion endorsed <lb />
It is important to keep the Off and <lb />

Sarsaparilla is the remedy for <lb />
ting these organs, <lb />
its work, and that inside of ninety <lb />
days they had turned around, <lb />
repudiated the ticket they <lb />
had endorsed in the beginning, <lb />
and were supporting another <lb />
against it; and he is wanting to <lb />
know of the people how they can <lb />
this year support a lot of men who <lb />
in 1892 could not keep their <lb />
promises from convention time to <lb />
election day. The foots are as <lb />
Capt Mason states them, and his <lb />

at o'clock P. M., in the home of <lb />
Mr. Jenkins, the bride's brother- <lb />

good looking they make, <lb />

prayers of many friends and <lb />

do your as a citizen who <lb />
loves government and is op- <lb />
posed to a return of Radicalism <lb />
in North Carolina. <lb />
Another important thing for <lb />
Democrats to think about is that <lb />
Justices of Supreme Court, <lb />
several Superior Court Judge <lb />
a State Treasurer must be <lb />
elected the of November. <lb />
It is co time for men. who want <lb />
to these places filled by <lb />
official, to fooling with <lb />
Populist fusion can- <lb />
Harry is <lb />

Congress vote to restore the <lb />
high taxation of the <lb />

back under Federal supervision ; <lb />
you vote to abolish the income <lb />
vote against stopping <lb />
the payment of fraudulent pen- <lb />
; you vote against the re <lb />
forms that the Democrats have <lb />
inaugurated ; in fact if you <lb />
for Harry Skinner you vote <lb />
against your own interest. <lb />
Hon. W. A. B. Branch and Col. <lb />
Harry Skinner met here Saturday <lb />
joint canvass. There <lb />
was a large crowd present to hear <lb />
them. We venture the assertion <lb />
that Democrat who heard <lb />
them left a less Democrat than <lb />
before, but on the contrary was <lb />
prouder than ever that he was a <lb />
Democrat. can also assert <lb />
with equal emphasis that no votes <lb />
were made for the third party, or <lb />
as they are now. We <lb />
go further and say that no <lb />
sensible, unprejudiced man heard <lb />
the two speeches who was not <lb />
convinced that Mr. Branch ought <lb />
to be elected and the Colonel <lb />
ought and must be beaten. <lb />
Mr- Branch's speech was pleas- <lb />
a gentle, mild and truthful. <lb />
It was brim-full of sensible mat- <lb />
delivered in a gentlemanly <lb />
way- Col- Skinner's was exactly <lb />
the opposite in every particular. <lb />
was the speech of an hone; t <lb />
man with a high regard for truth <lb />
and principle. The other was the <lb />
speech of a pure unalloyed <lb />
a meaner, more <lb />
deceiving speech we never heard. <lb />
If every white man in Pitt <lb />
county could have heard the Colo- <lb />
tirade he would not get <lb />
enough of their votes to count. <lb />
If every white man in the First <lb />
District could have heard this <lb />
speech the cast for the <lb />
Colonel on the day of <lb />
by them would not be enough <lb />
to mark the fact that he had ever <lb />
been a candidate for Congress in <lb />
this District. has <lb />
nothing to fear from such <lb />
It has only the effect <lb />
to arouse to new effort those who <lb />
love honor, truth and upright- <lb />
in politics- We ask the <lb />
good, men of Pitt to slay w <lb />
by their votes next Tuesday their <lb />
of any such ha- <lb />
as the Colonel made here <lb />
last Saturday. <lb />
Politically the Colonel is a <lb />
dead back number, <lb />
justly so too, as there is nothing <lb />
in him. <lb />
Mr- Branch has made a <lb />
against whom not the <lb />
slightest suspicion has ever rest- <lb />
ed. His character, both public <lb />
and private, is above reproach. <lb />
He is just s man as the <lb />
wart to represent them and <lb />
Married. <lb />

The Black Record of Black Radicals. <lb />
four months, this Legislature second in importance to <lb />

the State to the extent of What our statute laws <lb />
Other schemes were also our whole system of <lb />
worked, and when this <lb />
adjourned North Carolina, <lb />
counting her old debt, was pros <lb />

the frightful total of <lb />
At that time the values of <lb />
the State were only <lb />
County authorities, emulating the <lb />
example of the State, began a sys <lb />
tern of plunder in their municipal <lb />
credit and plunged many of them <lb />
so deeply in debt that many of <lb />
the wealthiest in the State had <lb />
their script hawked on the streets <lb />

The Republican party in North <lb />

and prosperously, says the of them and took an <lb />
Messenger. That is j entire floor a great hotel, par- <lb />

of extravagance, of infamy. It <lb />
plundered the people, robbed the <lb />
school children, bankrupted the <lb />
State- It did all that was <lb />
to do that was evil and <lb />
destructive. It left undone <lb />
all that was good and right and <lb />
beneficial. Hard words, but true <lb />
words. The white men of North <lb />
Carolina who lived between <lb />
know how this was. <lb />
The rule of the carpetbaggers, the <lb />
the black and tan <lb />
was a rule of ruin rob- <lb />
If we could get hold of <lb />
the book of 1376, we <lb />
could bring out the startling fig- <lb />
of the crimes plunder <lb />
Radicals. They <lb />
show a degree of political <lb />
personal debauchery <lb />
that seems now beyond belief. <lb />
One Legislature alone, fully <lb />
their control, ran up the <lb />
State indebtedness to about <lb />
The State then was too <lb />
poor to pay the even <lb />
this robbery. Of this <lb />
great sum the people have <lb />
ed but very little benefit. One <lb />
Southern woman from New Or <lb />
in <lb />
possession of of these <lb />
bonds. She said sh obtained <lb />
whole sum thus thrown away pa d <lb />
by the helpless overburdened <lb />
people of our State. It was the <lb />
most vicious, the most dis- <lb />
play of corruption and robbery <lb />
that was made by he plunderers <lb />
of any of the several harrowed <lb />
and pillaged States of the South- <lb />
The record is dark with <lb />
and most damning to all engaged <lb />
in the rioting stripping <lb />
And now after some twenty <lb />
years of prosperity under Demo- <lb />
supremacy and benign gov- <lb />

steadily and surely advanced in <lb />
prosperity ; after its schools and <lb />
colleges have placed upon a <lb />
high plane of success ; the <lb />
railroad system has greatly <lb />
developed and perfected ; after <lb />
taxes have been reduced well- <lb />
nigh to what they <lb />
were; after long continued law <lb />
and order and the prevailing of <lb />
good will between the races, it is <lb />
now asked the grand old <lb />
party of the Union and the <lb />

President of <lb />
Mr. Jonah Turner, the old <lb />

all villainy from day to day <lb />

whole lesson of moral <lb />
and financial ruin. <lb />
a recent issue our valued <lb />

honor, made the State a byword <lb />
and reproach, heaped debts <lb />
mountain high robbed whole- <lb />

people by the war and the <lb />
disastrous results. <lb />
this is the party that the <lb />
erring, misled Populists are allied <lb />
With in 1894, and hope with them <lb />
to gain possession of the control <lb />
of the State- Woe the day <lb />
when that comes to our dear old <lb />
mother North Carolina. <lb />
The Citizen shows that a <lb />
cal Legislature with some two <lb />
thirds of the members or more, <lb />
several not able to <lb />
read or at once entered <lb />
upon their raiding robbing. <lb />
The treasury was emptied early. <lb />
The school fund was made way <lb />

old story will be new to many <lb />

baggers and Degrees determined <lb />
to work the credit of the State <lb />
for all it was <lb />

Legislature. This ring bought <lb />
the Legislature, giving orders <lb />
G. W. for the money. <lb />
A regular bar was established in <lb />
of the State. Rail- <lb />
roads were chartered right and <lb />
left- Bonds were is med for the <lb />
tuck of the State in all these pro- <lb />
Id this war, in leg than <lb />
disappointed, incapable, and <lb />
in many cases unprincipled <lb />
shall be placed power, <lb />
and control the destinies of a <lb />
great State with than <lb />
population. The proposition <lb />
is monstrous. Let the white men <lb />
and the colored men who wish <lb />
well to the State and have a prop <lb />
regard for their own interests <lb />
beware, see to it that such an <lb />
unmitigated curse calamity <lb />
does not befall North Carolina. <lb />
WILL THE <lb />
PEOPLE RUN <lb />
RISK. <lb />
THE <lb />
would be made by a <lb />
Legislature elected upon idea <lb />
of general opposition to the ex- <lb />
order of things, cannot <lb />
be foretold. We know, <lb />
though, that such a Legislature <lb />
would be dominated for the Pop- <lb />
by Marion Butler, and <lb />
the Republicans by Dr. J- J- <lb />
Mott. We ate not unmindful of <lb />
the fact that it is now the <lb />
that Mr. Butler and <lb />
Mr. would be the con- <lb />
trolling influences of such a body, <lb />
but Dr. Mott is a stronger char- <lb />
and an abler than Mr. <lb />
Pritchard, as the fattier of <lb />
espoused it two <lb />
years ago while Mr. Pritchard <lb />
was yet a straight would <lb />
quickly shove the latter the <lb />
background and in <lb />
with Butler rule the Legislature. <lb />
We should then have government <lb />
North Carolina not, as now, by <lb />
the people, but by Mott and But- <lb />
Mott is a natural and <lb />
has had long years experience in <lb />
the business- Butler has within <lb />
two years developed into tho most <lb />
autocrat the State has <lb />
ever seen- He is the supreme <lb />
ruler of the Populist party in this <lb />
State and his underlings obey him <lb />
implicitly. Mott would pimply <lb />
take the Republican of <lb />
a fusion Legislature by the throat <lb />
choke them into subjection <lb />
by virtue of his force <lb />
capacity. <lb />
It is alone that these two <lb />
men would elect themselves to <lb />
the United States Senate. That, <lb />
heaven knows, would be bad <lb />
enough ; but the States <lb />
Senate cannot hurt or help us half <lb />
as much as can the Legislature <lb />
of North Carolina, and well might <lb />
the State tremble for what would <lb />
be meted out to it through the <lb />
Legislature by these two men <lb />
intoxicated with victory <lb />
mated by the spirit of revenge. <lb />
The work of years would be over <lb />
turned a new of things <lb />
instituted. An intolerable auto- <lb />
would set up the <lb />
true people, who have since <lb />
the war rescued the Common <lb />
wealth from bankruptcy and dis- <lb />
grace, would see their work <lb />
strayed and themselves <lb />
under ban. We cannot the <lb />
picture of what would b , for no <lb />
one knows. If we could we would <lb />
recoil from it in the <lb />
spectacle would every be- <lb />
holder. <lb />
God the State <lb />
people of North Carolina <lb />
should reflect well upon what is <lb />
involved in a transfer of <lb />
State government from the hands <lb />
of the Democratic party to those <lb />
of the party which has placed its <lb />
candidates before thorn but <lb />
which has not yet taken unto it <lb />
self a name. All but of the <lb />
members of tho Supreme Court <lb />
are to be elected, and half of the <lb />
judges of the Superior Court. As <lb />
to the Supreme <lb />
Court candidates, Capt. W. H. <lb />
Kitchin has been charged with <lb />
having said, and as far as <lb />
know has not denied having said, <lb />
that everybody in tho east knows <lb />
that Judge Faircloth is not tit to <lb />
sit the Supreme Court bench <lb />
and that he has heard the west <lb />
that Judge Furches is even less <lb />
tit than Faircloth. If Captain <lb />
did not say this we will <lb />
give him the liberty of our col- <lb />
to deny it- It is that <lb />
in his he cannot be in- <lb />
to tell the people who they <lb />
should vote for, notwithstanding <lb />
that he has been urged to do BO <lb />
by gentlemen who have met him <lb />
in joint discussion. He is the <lb />
chief speaker for the unnamed <lb />
party in their campaign and tho <lb />
people may naturally regard with <lb />
suspicion a ticket which he will <lb />
not advise them to vote for. As <lb />
to the candidates for the Superior <lb />
Court nominated by <lb />
the combination against the De- <lb />
who can Mine thorn <lb />
We cannot. The majority of them <lb />
are men unheard of until now <lb />
and some of them are wholly in- <lb />
who have made <lb />
no reputation at the bar or in <lb />
any other line of endeavor, and <lb />
who are unfitted to sit in <lb />
upon the lives and property <lb />
of the people- Toe judiciary is <lb />
the last refuge of the citizen. If <lb />
it be incompetent or corrupt he is <lb />
in danger of both his person and <lb />
and we distinctly as- <lb />
that some of the men who <lb />
have been named for judges <lb />
against the candidates of the Dem <lb />
party are entirely <lb />
to discharge the duties of <lb />
the places for which they have <lb />
been nominated Its judiciary has <lb />
been in all times the pride and <lb />
the glory of North Carolina and <lb />
unless her people have become <lb />
unworthy of their traditions they <lb />
not sec the standard lowered <lb />
this year. <lb />
Then he some <lb />
more. <lb />
Then he felt much better- <lb />
In eastern North Carolina it is <lb />
generally admitted that Buck is <lb />
acting on the advice of his family <lb />
physician. <lb />
Buck is of a billions tempera- <lb />
his system being so <lb />
that it resists the medicinal prop- <lb />
of the most drastic <lb />
tics. <lb />
While medicine had failed, <lb />
Buck's physician discovered that <lb />
the of Cleveland in large <lb />
doses, before and after each meal, <lb />
relieved the torpid condition and <lb />
the liver correspondingly. <lb />
Buck doesn't hate the Demo <lb />
party. He is making a tour <lb />
of the State simply that he may <lb />
have a wider field in which to <lb />
Grover and thus improve <lb />
the condition of his liver -John R <lb />
Morris in Charlotte Observer. <lb />
N. C Oct. <lb />
Kitchin gave a performance in <lb />
this town on Saturday. <lb />
Saturday is a stirring day, and <lb />
tho commerce of our county towns <lb />
hum on this old Jew <lb />
There was a swarm of <lb />
folks in town, but tho attendance <lb />
show was slim- <lb />
Many who were old school <lb />
Democrats who are fond of the <lb />
humorous phases of Buck, and <lb />
who, on love to laugh <lb />
at ridiculous thing- <lb />
In the ring with Buck was Dr. <lb />
W- Patrick Exum, surgeon gen <lb />
of the North branch <lb />
of Army. <lb />
Surgeon General Exum is the <lb />
same Exum who, while <lb />
for Governor, stumped his toe <lb />
against the Democratic party and <lb />
fell sprawling. <lb />
After the election and fall of the <lb />
doctor, he said <lb />
the people in tho county <lb />
as I do, tho streets of Golds- <lb />
would run knee-deep with <lb />
Though Dr. Pat threatened this <lb />
knee-deep freshet of blood, a pro- <lb />
position, authorized by act of <lb />
Legislature, to issue in <lb />
bonds for a system of sewerage <lb />
was defeated. It was impossible <lb />
to awake oven a timid people to a <lb />
sense danger or to the <lb />
of ditches to carry off <lb />
the blood. <lb />
The surgeon general will talk- <lb />
He probably talks more and <lb />
does less harm than any man on <lb />
earth. <lb />
Enough of the surgeon <lb />
Let us quietly and prayerfully <lb />
turn to Buck for a moments. <lb />
How far Buck is yet reconciled <lb />
to political association with Mr- <lb />
Marion Butler, Duke of Sampson <lb />
and Earl of Wayne, is not <lb />
pen since Buck, a few weeks ago, <lb />
remarked to a friend of mine, in <lb />
been in tho Populist par- <lb />
enough to find out that <lb />
Marion Butler is a <lb />
In his speech, o Saturday, <lb />
Buck declared the free <lb />
and unlimited coinage of silver <lb />
except on a basis of an <lb />
agreement. <lb />
Then he Cleveland. <lb />
Then Buck declared that the <lb />
Democratic party was not <lb />
for the low price of <lb />
but that the price was fixed by <lb />
the English, in Liverpool. <lb />
vote ticket. <lb />
The result of the in <lb />
North Carolina to the whole <lb />
pie is of stupendous importance, <lb />
It really, and without <lb />
would amount to something <lb />
very nearly approaching a <lb />
if by the stupidity and <lb />
blindness of the people voting <lb />
that tho control of public <lb />
should be taken from the great <lb />
party that has saved the State <lb />
and governed wisdom and <lb />
righteousness, and handed over <lb />
to the unwise and reckless <lb />
and have <lb />
united, throwing all semblance of <lb />
principle to the winds, for the one <lb />
purpose, the sole purpose of get- <lb />
ting o, of securing grub and <lb />
the distribution of spoils. It <lb />
not be a revolution of <lb />
blood, but a revolution of radical <lb />
wide, deep, broad that would <lb />
amount to a cataclysm of rum and <lb />
robbery, says the Wilmington <lb />
Messenger. <lb />
Tho thinking, sensible, honest, <lb />
well people of North <lb />
who would not bring upon <lb />
the State a condition of disorder, <lb />
of discontent, of <lb />
waste and must <lb />
unite vote for <lb />
the nominees of the party. As <lb />
Senator Ransom said in his speech <lb />
here throw away and <lb />
preference and personal dislikes <lb />
burn the n on the altar of <lb />
your country. It is of the great- <lb />
est importance that the party <lb />
nominees should be voted for by <lb />
man calling himself a Dem- <lb />
and by every man who <lb />
wishes well to his people and him <lb />
self. <lb />
This is u time for splitting <lb />
tickets and dropping names- You <lb />
may find names tho tickets <lb />
this year that are to you <lb />
against your and <lb />
But do not throw them <lb />
aside. Vote the ticket. This is <lb />
necessary now aim. beyond any <lb />
other year because of the truly <lb />
infamous conspiracy afoot to ruin <lb />
and blast North Carolina- Put <lb />
the Radicals again in and <lb />
you will invite the flood of waste- <lb />
high taxes <lb />
to come with all of its <lb />
destructive, oppressed power. <lb />
By failure to vote for a Dem <lb />
fact to that extent <lb />
help to put the vile <lb />
of hungry office seekers who <lb />
drop all pretense of principles to <lb />
fasten their clutches upon the vi- <lb />
of North Duty to <lb />
yourself, duty to your family, <lb />
to your State compel you to <lb />
maintain your principles, vote the <lb />
ticket and stand guard to the <lb />
Democratic flag- <lb />
We repeat, tho election and its <lb />
results is of the utmost <lb />
to the future weal of North <lb />
Carolina. Your Legislature, two <lb />
nine Representatives, <lb />
the Judiciary and County Gov- <lb />
low taxes and pub- <lb />
education are all at stake- <lb />
Vote the Ledger <lb />
OPPOSED TO POPULISTS. <lb />
There is a very strong feeling <lb />
among the intelligent color- <lb />
ed men fusing with the <lb />
populists, whom they say are only <lb />
disappointed Democrats. One of <lb />
the most intelligent colored men <lb />
in this State is the editor of the <lb />
Star of published at <lb />
bury from which we copy the <lb />
history of the Populist <lb />
movement shows that it has been <lb />
inaugurated carried on by a <lb />
disgruntled element of the Demo- <lb />
party which has changed <lb />
in nothing except in name, only <lb />
from bad to worse. All the crazy <lb />
political freaks that disturb the <lb />
public and the legislation which <lb />
would unsettle, if not disrupt, our <lb />
whole system of government, <lb />
spring up and are advocated by <lb />
the Populist element. They <lb />
generally as much, if not more, <lb />
opposed to giving fair play to the <lb />
than are intelligent and <lb />
progressive Democrats- The <lb />
reasons for this are apparent. <lb />
The Populists are made up, as a <lb />
rule, of the element of white <lb />
which has always been op- <lb />
posed to the progress and best <lb />
of the The ac- <lb />
of the so called white <lb />
of the votes of <lb />
the Populist members of Con- <lb />
and tho various State <lb />
Legislatures all questions <lb />
which concern tho give <lb />
evidence that there is in <lb />
that pan v, or a coalition with that <lb />
party, that will prove of benefit <lb />
to the There are only two <lb />
parties that can hope to have any <lb />
show of success in this <lb />
for years to come. Those are <lb />
the grand old Republican party <lb />
which once stood for human <lb />
rights and fair play, and the <lb />
Democratic party which is now <lb />
in control of national affairs. <lb />
The history of the two parties is <lb />
before intelligent citizen, <lb />
lie who can't what suits him <lb />
in the one should try the other, <lb />
since any other course amounts <lb />
to little more than labor lost. <lb />
We advise colored men who <lb />
can't it convenient to act <lb />
with and for the Republican <lb />
party to either lot politics alone <lb />
or endeavor to make some sort of <lb />
deal with their Democratic friends <lb />
as will give them a chance to ex- <lb />
the right of franchise in a <lb />
manner that will promote the <lb />
best interests of the country and <lb />
Th i time will come, if it is not <lb />
already here, colored men <lb />
will fill it to their to <lb />
act with the Democrats in <lb />
matters, especially those pertain- <lb />
to local State As <lb />
between Democrats Populists <lb />
we prefer straight-out <lb />
racy with all that the term <lb />
plies, to Populism. The Demo- <lb />
have set the Republicans <lb />
excellent example- When <lb />
they were out of power in <lb />
the minority they kept their or- <lb />
intact, Dominated can- <lb />
each year and continued <lb />
the victory came. If <lb />
tho Republicans even here in <lb />
North Carolina will only do like- <lb />
wise, return to the old landmarks, <lb />
preach and practice Republican <lb />
doctrine as it was in the days of <lb />
Lincoln, Sumner Grant, d <lb />
the doctrine of a free <lb />
vote and fair count for <lb />
every lawful citizen, with <lb />
protection to American la- <lb />
borers and American institutions <lb />
they are sure to win. <lb />
PONDER WELL WHAT YOU DO. <lb />
If has a single sen- <lb />
reason yet why <lb />
should desert vote against the <lb />
Democratic party in North Caro- <lb />
we seen it. There is <lb />
none. The record is too plain, so <lb />
plain that every man must see it. <lb />
He can't help it. The party in <lb />
North Carolina has stood for and <lb />
pledged an economical and hon- <lb />
est government. Where is the <lb />
man who can deny prove that <lb />
it has failed to keep its pledges t <lb />
Every man knows that taxation <lb />
is now lower in North Carolina <lb />
than in any other State in the <lb />
Union, that justice is dealt out <lb />
from our courts, that the laws <lb />
are administered the best <lb />
way, that <lb />
have without exception been <lb />
faithful to every trust, that the <lb />
whole department of government <lb />
has been administered iD a prop- <lb />
honest and economical way- <lb />
When a man denies these facts it <lb />
is in order to ask him for some <lb />
proof to substantiate his state- <lb />
Populist editors and <lb />
speakers deny it all, but offer not <lb />
a single instance which a trust <lb />
has betrayed- <lb />
Men of North Carolina who <lb />
have passed through tho expert <lb />
of the last thirty years <lb />
should be slow to turn <lb />
this party which has been the <lb />
salvation of of the State. If <lb />
will but stop reflect, and <lb />
bring to bear their common <lb />
and experience, they will not do <lb />
so. We are not surprised that <lb />
boys, irresponsible men, and place <lb />
hunters should do as they are do- <lb />
seeking to destroy tho only <lb />
party that can will govern <lb />
the State well. But why in the <lb />
world sensible honest men <lb />
who are seeking only the welfare <lb />
of their State should for a mo- <lb />
hesitate to give their en- <lb />
tire support to tho Democratic <lb />
party, we cannot see. <lb />
No matter how of North <lb />
Carolina are divided <lb />
issues, all true men should come <lb />
together make a solid unit <lb />
for the best State government. <lb />
While every man should have an <lb />
in affairs, his <lb />
supreme should <lb />
in his State government- Lot us <lb />
not lose Bight of this truth. <lb />
were the National Demo- <lb />
party opposed to our inter- <lb />
that party, as a State <lb />
party, could give us the best <lb />
State government, then it would <lb />
clearly be to our interest to sup <lb />
port that party. There are many <lb />
men who oppose the <lb />
party, however but <lb />
they must admit that the Demo- <lb />
party is the best one in <lb />
North <lb />
And this is the important point <lb />
with us. North Carolina must be <lb />
kept in safe hands. Where can <lb />
any improvement be made by a <lb />
change if there is <lb />
there will certainly be <lb />
a retrogression, a backsliding, a <lb />
return to thee irrupt, extravagant <lb />
and raining la of Radical- <lb />
ism. Men who love their State <lb />
will think twice before they do <lb />
anything to wrench it from the <lb />
party that has given it all win h <lb />
it now possesses. <lb />
The Populists are in of the <lb />
Ballot System. <lb />
In a speech at Winston <lb />
day night Mr. J. C- re- <lb />
to the subject of hard <lb />
times, warned the people that if <lb />
the Republicans gained this <lb />
we have such bard <lb />
times that the depression through <lb />
which we have passed would, in <lb />
comparison, be reverted to as a <lb />
sort of thanksgiving occasion. <lb />
And Mr. Buxton is exactly right, <lb />
except that he did not put it <lb />
strong enough. No such distress <lb />
and hard times has ever been <lb />
witnessed in the United States as <lb />
would result from the control of <lb />
Republicans and Populists. <lb />
Either would be bad but the two <lb />
combined, would be confusion <lb />
worse confounded, From such <lb />
an aggregation the of <lb />
North Carolina and the South <lb />
have everything to fear. South <lb />
Carolina, Colorado, Kansas <lb />
Oregon are samples of what can <lb />
be expected- The result would be <lb />
much worse if the whole country <lb />
was turned over to the <lb />
Herald. <lb />
be in separate compartments; the <lb />
ballots are printed on one pa- <lb />
per by the State, and each voter <lb />
is allowed to have only one ballot <lb />
only one voter is allowed in the <lb />
booth at once; each is re- <lb />
quired to make a mark exactly in <lb />
a certain place indicating the per- <lb />
sons on the ballot they wish to <lb />
vote for. <lb />
These are the main features of <lb />
the system. Any one can Bee a, <lb />
a glance that this would prevent <lb />
any one from voting who could <lb />
not read- It would not only do <lb />
this, but its intricacies would <lb />
vent many others more intelligent <lb />
from exercising their rights at the <lb />
ballot box. It would practically <lb />
disfranchise a large number of <lb />
both colored and white people, <lb />
but of course it would affect a <lb />
larger number of colored people <lb />
than Times. <lb />

We are sorry to learn that the <lb />
farmers are showing a <lb />
to rush their to mar- <lb />
when it is not absolutely <lb />
to do so. <lb />
There is no doubt that the size <lb />
of the crop is over-estimated and <lb />
that the present low price is due <lb />
to the general belief that an <lb />
crop has been raised- This <lb />
report is, we believe, untrue, but <lb />
it has been industriously, <lb />
by agents of foreign spinners <lb />
brokers who find it to their <lb />
advantage do so. <lb />
Cotton is low simply because <lb />
the size of the crop is over <lb />
mated. The market the pro- <lb />

port and until this feeling is <lb />
proved there is little reason to <lb />
look for and advance in prices. <lb />

What They Think of Other. <lb />
We give Marion Boiler's <lb />
opinion of the Republican party <lb />
in his exact words, copied from <lb />
his paper of July, 1892, as <lb />
a word to these who have <lb />
the People's party What <lb />
is there to be gained for reform <lb />
by defeating tho Democratic <lb />
State ticket I but much <lb />
to lose, let the result be what it <lb />
may If you elect your ticket, <lb />
you do it at the sufferance of the <lb />
Key party, and you are at <lb />
their mercy now and in the <lb />
If you are the cause of the <lb />
Republican party capturing the <lb />
State you have given a heavy blow <lb />
to the cause of reform and put the <lb />
management of your State in <lb />
worthy and hands- Let <lb />
not those who want office more <lb />
than they do reform precipitate <lb />
you into taking any such unwise <lb />
We would ask our Republican <lb />
friends what they think of the <lb />
above words. and <lb />
incapable strong <lb />
language that, <lb />
The Republicans in their <lb />
hand-book denounce the <lb />
Populists as and <lb />
What do our <lb />
list friends think of that f <lb />
Take the Populist opinion of <lb />
the Republicans, and the <lb />
opinion of the Populist, and <lb />
we wonder how there era be a <lb />
fusion between the parties. <lb />
It is a strange mixture can <lb />
be explained in other way <lb />
that parties want to boat <lb />
Democrats and are willing to <lb />
to airy thin <lb />
cord Times, <lb />
The Populist here are bitterly <lb />
denying that they are favor of <lb />
the Australian ballot system- <lb />
They are very of their <lb />
own platform, or they are not toll- <lb />
tho truth- They may take <lb />
whichever horn of tho dilemma <lb />
they choose- <lb />
Now this is a matter very <lb />
proven. Their own county pa- <lb />
per publishes every week the last <lb />
platform and utterance of the <lb />
People's party. What does <lb />
that say Here it is, and it is <lb />
copied verbatim from the <lb />
Populist's bible, the <lb />
Resolved, That we demand a <lb />
free ballot and a fair count in all <lb />
elections pledge ourselves to <lb />
secure it to every legal voter with- <lb />
out Federal intervention, through <lb />
the adoption by the States of the <lb />
Australian or secret <lb />
ballot <lb />
The Pops, considered it so very <lb />
important that they put it the <lb />
very first resolution in the plat- <lb />
form. If there is any one who <lb />
doubts that this is tho exact word- <lb />
of platform, lot him get <lb />
any copy of the Vestibule see <lb />
for himself. <lb />
Now, this platform of the Pop- <lb />
only declares for the <lb />
Australian ballot but it <lb />
in favor of tho <lb />
or secret ballot <lb />
That is, the pure article, as <lb />
it originated exists in <lb />
and not as it has been <lb />
changed and New <lb />

The question to consider, <lb />
what is the <lb />

otherwise that there <lb />
were thousands of good, well <lb />
meaning citizens in North Caro <lb />
who have united with the <lb />
Populists. We would novel inti- <lb />
mate otherwise says tho <lb />
ton Messenger. They are <lb />
in being most unwisely led. <lb />
A part of their principles are <lb />
safe, but <lb />
they are so blended with <lb />
other dogmas that are revolution- <lb />
destructive as to repel <lb />
tens of thousands of people all <lb />
States who would wish them <lb />
success if their ends were indeed <lb />
wise, practical <lb />
We feel assured that every <lb />
county good men, religious men <lb />
even, men of character who <lb />
are at heart patriotic, are follow- <lb />
the Populists leaders. They <lb />
are following blinded <lb />

for government, but who are self- <lb />
ill-balanced, disappoint- <lb />

The good true men among <lb />
tho Populists ought to spurn <lb />

this base wholesale <lb />

worthy element will look at the <lb />

they must see how glaring and <lb />

Bound to Get the Train. <lb />
A young woman, jauntily dressed, <lb />
wearing a natty suit, rushed into the <lb />
union station the other afternoon. <lb />
Taking a hurried glance at the walls <lb />
of the room, she finally discovered <lb />
the timepiece, and with an audible <lb />
ran upstairs as fast as her <lb />
already weakened strength would <lb />
permit. She was nearly overcome <lb />
by her exertions as she reached the <lb />
exit to the platform. A large box <lb />
and two bundles were all the imped- <lb />
she carried. She was climb- <lb />
aboard a train for Springfield, <lb />
minding not the drops of rain that <lb />
were drenching her costume, at the <lb />
same time telling the brakeman, <lb />
with spasmodic gasps, how she <lb />
feared the horrid train would leave <lb />
before she arrived, adding that she <lb />
had an engagement in New Britain <lb />
that she must break. On learn- <lb />
that she was not on the New <lb />
side of the station, and had <lb />
not time to go around, she tossed <lb />
her luggage over the fence, and with <lb />
an athletic bound sprang after it. <lb />
She landed all right, and, making a <lb />
dash, succeeded in boarding the <lb />
train she sought just in time. Hats <lb />

THE PAST. <lb />
The Necessity for the Old-Time Ox <lb />
Team Gone. <lb />
Cattle Inspector has <lb />
finished his rounds, and reports not <lb />
one team of oxen owned in town, <lb />
says the Easthampton News. <lb />
Last year there was just one, which <lb />
was sold for beef on the day after <lb />
his call was made. This, the last <lb />
team, was owned by P. Burt. <lb />
This vanishing of the heavy ox team <lb />
marks an era in our progress just as <lb />
surely, if not as noticeably, as the <lb />
coming of steam after the stage <lb />
coaches and canals, or the entrance <lb />
of the electric car to supplement <lb />
and in some respects displace the <lb />
steam locomotive and the horse <lb />
team. Years ago the farmer was <lb />
not to be found who did not own an <lb />
ox team and oftentimes more than <lb />
one. The land was heavier than <lb />
now, much of it was new sod, and <lb />
the roads were far harder to travel <lb />
than even at this date when we are <lb />
apt to think them anything but <lb />
good. But with the coining of bet- <lb />
roads the more complete break- <lb />
of the fields, the of <lb />
powerful machinery and cheap <lb />
for removing stumps and <lb />
rocks, and, more especially, the <lb />
breeding of heavier horses, the pa- <lb />
ox has, like the Indian, gone <lb />
out of our civilization gradually but <lb />
surely, but, unlike the Indian, he <lb />
has not gone west. To the little <lb />
folks to-day the massive yokes, <lb />
smooth and glistening with the labor <lb />
of straining shoulders, arc a <lb />
The big-tongued cart is <lb />
most as obsolete as the ox himself, <lb />
and the long whip has gone with the <lb />
and and and <lb />
strange terms of a now almost <lb />
dead language. As, in so many <lb />
other respects, classic reference to <lb />
will have to be ex- <lb />
plained before long, with reference <lb />
to the cow as the <lb />
and undoubtedly the revisers will <lb />
have it in the <lb />
of a decade hence. <lb />
So we progress from crude muscle <lb />
and the tugging of sinews to the <lb />
power of swift horses, tireless steam, <lb />
and now stand on the threshold of <lb />
the universal electricity, that has <lb />
been back of all these forerunners, <lb />
and is now fast supplanting them. <lb />
There may be a pair or so of oxen <lb />
again owned in town, but, like the <lb />
getting out of the tin lantern, it <lb />
be but a flickering revival of a <lb />
past already dead. <lb />
goose, standing in dread of the <lb />
monkey, seeks salvation by speedily <lb />
making for the water, instinctively <lb />
knowing that in her native element <lb />
she is sure of freer movements than <lb />
upon the land. The monkey, afraid <lb />
of the water, exerts himself to the <lb />
uttermost not to drawn into it. <lb />
Both animals utter cries of despair, <lb />
while the noise and laughter of the <lb />
onlookers conduce to make the hap- <lb />
less creatures completely frenzied. <lb />
As a rule the goose proves <lb />
and the monkey is drawn <lb />
into the water. At the outset he is <lb />
utterly at a loss to know how to con- <lb />
duct himself there; but the cunning <lb />
rogue, quick recognize bis <lb />
advantages, presently sits <lb />
astride the the goose, in <lb />
true equestrian fashion. The goose <lb />
is likewise flurried at first, but soon <lb />
appears to regain her scattered wits <lb />
if a goose may be said to have <lb />
wits. She is about to take a dive, <lb />
but the simian throws his long arms <lb />
about her neck and prevents her. <lb />
Hardly the rascal made certain <lb />
of his advantage than his courage <lb />
returns. With the most provoking- <lb />
ludicrous grimaces the angered <lb />
monkey deals blow upon blow upon <lb />
the poor goose's body and tears her <lb />
feathers; and the more the <lb />
tors laugh and shout the wilder are <lb />
his antics. This state of things lasts <lb />
until the luckless animals are loosed <lb />
from an uncongenial companionship, <lb />
and the exhibition comes to an end. <lb />

To those who are interested in <lb />

made when he was the most popular <lb />

failure was recorded only to be fol- <lb />

fused until the very last to give way <lb />
to the requirements of the new <lb />

LL YOU HELP <lb />
In the great contest which is to be fought between now and the next presidential election for <lb />
THE PEOPLE'S Coinage both Gold and Silver, without discrimination, which means the <lb />
free coinage of both as opposed to the policy of contraction, which is being dictated by England, and <lb />
which levies tribute on every product of the farm, on valuations of all kinds and on all compensation for <lb />
labor. <lb />
The Great; Issue now the double standard against the single use of both gold and <lb />
silver as standard money metals, against the organized effort to hold the currency of the country strictly <lb />
to the gold basis. <lb />
THE ATLANTA CIRCULATION, 156,000- <lb />
WEEKLY CONSTITUTION <lb />
published at ATLANTA, GA., and having <lb />
A CIRCULATION OF MORE THAN chiefly among the farmers of the <lb />
Country, and going to more homes than any weekly newspaper published on the face of the earth is <lb />
The Leading Champion Of the People in this as well as in other great contests in which <lb />
they are engaged against the exactions of monopoly. <lb />
By special arrangement with The Constitution the paper publishing this announcement is prepared to make <lb />
A REMARKABLE CLUBBING OFFER, by which both this paper and The Constitution <lb />
will be offered for one year at almost the price of a year's subscription to one paper. <lb />
BOTH PAPERS FOR <lb />
THE CONSTITUTION THE BIGGEST AND BEST WEEKLY NEWS- <lb />
PAPER published in America, covering the news of the world, having correspondents in every city <lb />
in America, and in the capitals of Europe, and reporting in full the details of debates in congress on <lb />
all questions of public interest. It is <lb />
THE GREAT SOUTHERN WEEKLY NEWSPAPER, and as the exponent of southern <lb />
opinion and the purveyor of southern news it has no equal on the continent. <lb />
THE CONSTITUTION'S SPECIAL FEATURES <lb />
are such as are not to be found in any other paper in America. <lb />
THE FARM AND FARMER'S DEPARTMENT, <lb />
THE WOMEN'S DEPARTMENT, <lb />
THE CHILDREN'S DEPARTMENT, <lb />
are all under able direction and are specially attractive to those to whom these departments are addressed. <lb />
Under the editorial of Clark Howell, its special contributors are writers of such world-wide <lb />
reputation as Mark Twain, Bret Harte, Frank R. Stockton, Joel Chandler Harris, and <lb />
of others, while it weekly service from such writers as Bill Sarge <lb />
Wallace P. Reed, Frank L. Stanton, and others, who give its literary features a peculiar Southern <lb />
flavor that commends it to every fireside from Virginia to Texas, from Missouri to <lb />
DO Not Delay, but send your name now. If you are already a subscriber to your home paper, and you <lb />
want The Constitution only, communicate with The Constitution direct, and send One Dollar for <lb />
one year's subscription with your guess in the prize contest. You can get your home paper, however, <lb />
publishing this, and The Constitution, for almost the price of one, and remember that all clubbing <lb />
subscriptions must be sent to this paper and not to The Constitution. <lb />
THE CONSTITUTION is among the few great newspapers publishing daily editions on the side of <lb />
the people against European Domination of our money system, and it heartily <lb />
The Free Coinage of Silver, <lb />
Believing that the establishment of a single gold standard will wreck the prosperity of the great masses <lb />
of the people, though it may profit the few who have already grown rich by federal protection and federal <lb />
subsidy. <lb />
Tariff Reform, <lb />
Believing that by throwing our ports open to the markets of the world and levying only enough import <lb />
duties to pay the actual expenses of the government, the will better served than by making <lb />
them pay double prices for protection's sake. <lb />
An Tan, <lb />
. that those who much property should bear the burdens of government in the pro- <lb />
portion to those who little. <lb />

Two Thousand Dollars in Cash Prizes <lb />
To those who take advantage of this clubbing offer The Constitution will distribute Two Thousand <lb />
Dollars in CASH PRIZES, by the following We have placed in a sealed envelope <lb />
in the keeping of the Treasurer of the State of Georgia, and locked in the great vaults of <lb />
the State, a legal tender note, which like all federal paper currency is numbered, each note of every <lb />
denomination issued by the government having its own number. The on this particular note is <lb />
composed of eight figures, and on the arrangement of these figures they appear On the note <lb />
depends the distribution Of the two thousand dollars in prizes offered. <lb />
The following figures compose O f O <lb />

a guess with every subscription. <lb />
fit heartily advocates an <lb />
EXPANSION OB THE CURRENCY <lb />
Until there is enough of it in circulation to do the business of the country. <lb />
If you wish to help in shaping legislation to these ends, GIVE THE CONSTITUTION YOUR ASSIST- <lb />
lend it a helping hand in the fight, and remember that by so doing you will help yourself, help <lb />
your neighbors, and help your country <lb />
THE WEEKLY CONSTITUTION has no equal in America Its news reports cover the world, <lb />

John H. Williamson, of Franklin <lb />

infuriated the crowd and armed <lb />
with sticks and pieces of fence <lb />

misrepresenting and abusing <lb />

other things he said that a man was <lb />
silly to sell tobacco in Greenville <lb />

Any man who would resort to <lb />

to go to a market that was <lb />
paying him only 135.00 for his <lb />
services, could be hired to do <lb />
almost anything for a very small <lb />
amount of money. <lb />
This same man has been the <lb />
Greenville warehouse floors when <lb />
tobacco was selling really higher <lb />
than the market, and because it <lb />
happened to belong to one of his <lb />
customers, we have seen <lb />
him go behind the sale and try to <lb />

It is true the world is composed <lb />
of all kinds and classes of beings, <lb />
and it takes all and classes <lb />
of creatures to make a world. <lb />
But when there are plenty of wild <lb />
vicious beasts of the lower <lb />
animal kingdom to live and move <lb />
in the sphere for which they were <lb />
intended, we certainly fail to <lb />
see why man made after the <lb />
of God should get down on <lb />
a level and equality with them. <lb />
From time to time this year, <lb />
have been forced to write <lb />
such articles as this one, and we <lb />
want to say just here that it is <lb />
anything else pleasant to <lb />
write in such a strain, but so long <lb />
as loafing scalawags and <lb />

come so numerous of late that <lb />
not only those of us who are <lb />
