THE DEVIL AND THE LAWYER <lb />
The Devil came on the earth one day <lb />
And into the Courthouse wended bis <lb />
way <lb />
Just as the attorney with very grave <lb />
face <lb />
Was proceeding to argue the points in <lb />
the case. <lb />
Now a lawyer his Majesty never had <lb />
For to his dominion one never had been, <lb />
And he felt very curious the reason to <lb />
know <lb />
Why none had been sent to the regions <lb />
below. <lb />
was the fault his agents his <lb />
thought. <lb />
Why of these lawyers had ever <lb />
been caught, <lb />
And tar his own pleasure he had a <lb />
desire <lb />
To come to the earth and the reason <lb />
inquire. <lb />
Well, the lawyer who with visage <lb />
so grave, <lb />
Made out his opponent a consummate <lb />
knave, <lb />
And the Devil was really greatly <lb />
amused <lb />
To hear the attorney so abused. <lb />
As soon us the speaker had conic to a <lb />
close. <lb />
The council opposing then fiercely arose <lb />
And heaped abuse on the head of <lb />
the first. <lb />
He made hint a of all men the <lb />
worst. <lb />
Thus they and <lb />
argued so long <lb />
Tim hard to determine the one that <lb />
was wrong, <lb />
And he had heard quite <lb />
enough of the tea, <lb />
Old Nick turned away and soliloquized <lb />

I'm satisfied now, all well. <lb />
For the lawyers would ruin morals <lb />

And I'm free to confess have <lb />

He gave alarm and every- <lb />

in and went to work to get the <lb />

THE VANCE MONUMENT. <lb />
An Expression of Mrs. Vance's Present <lb />
Wishes in the Matter- <lb />
It is generally known that it <lb />
was Mrs. Vance's earnest desire <lb />
that the the erection <lb />
of a memorial to the late Senator <lb />
by the people's contributions <lb />
should primarily, and at last, take <lb />
the form of a monument over his <lb />
grave in the at <lb />
ville. But, before her wishes <lb />
were known the movement for a <lb />
statue at tho capitol Raleigh <lb />
had progressed so far that it was <lb />
deemed inexpedient to check or <lb />
divert this expression of the <lb />
people's feeling the Ashe- <lb />
ville idea was held in abeyance. <lb />
A very simple solution of the <lb />
matter however, from the <lb />
most appropriate of <lb />
a soldier who had known Vance <lb />
in tho battle, and afterwards en- <lb />
joyed the fruits of his wise civil <lb />
administration in the stress of <lb />
come through the <lb />
act a veteran of the <lb />
Confederacy. <lb />
At a recent meeting of tho <lb />
Veteran Camp in this city, Mr. <lb />
James who achieved <lb />
a reputation for unsurpassed <lb />
gallantry as color-bearer of the <lb />
Third-thud Regiment offered a <lb />
resolution which is thus recorded <lb />
in the minutes cf the camp <lb />
James W- Atkinson, the <lb />
bravo color bearer of tho <lb />
Third third, offered resolutions <lb />
to the end that we procure and <lb />
send up a suitably inscribed stone, <lb />
from Cumberland, to be placed <lb />
the pedestal of tho Vance <lb />
at and that <lb />
the Vance committee of this camp <lb />
invite and urge the counties to do <lb />
likewise. Ho the <lb />
resolutions by an eloquent and <lb />
patriotic <lb />
This having come to the <lb />
of Mrs. Vance elicited from <lb />
her the following touching letter <lb />
to the brave color-bearer <lb />
P. C, May <lb />
Dear Mr. <lb />
am not at all strong and my <lb />
hands tremble, but I cannot delay <lb />
to thank you over and over, for <lb />
tho suggestion you have made in <lb />
regard to a monument to be <lb />
placed my husband's grave- <lb />
Oh how can I express myself <lb />
If you had studied a long time to <lb />
think of some way that would <lb />
please me and comfort me, I am <lb />
sure you could have thought of <lb />
no way more or com- <lb />
I would have a <lb />
made of stones from each <lb />
county in the Slate in preference <lb />
to any other, and one <lb />
that was composed of <lb />
of the Confederate veterans. <lb />
I have not the Sunday <lb />
Messenger that I under- <lb />
stand was to have had the <lb />
offered at your meeting <lb />
but Mr. Hale told me of <lb />
kind and noble words. I think, <lb />
too, that an inscription chosen by <lb />
the veterans of each county would <lb />
be most beautiful indeed. I could <lb />
add nothing to the completeness <lb />
of your idea or the expression of <lb />
your kindness, except to say it <lb />
tills my heart with to <lb />
know that my great, good <lb />
band has such true friends to <lb />
cherish his memory. If there is <lb />
a way I can serve you now or <lb />
over, please remember that i <lb />
know my husband's favorite <lb />
was to God and <lb />
man for the blessing of affection <lb />
I am truly your friend, <lb />
Steele <lb />
It is no doubt that Mr. At- <lb />
proposition and Mrs- <lb />
Vance's letter of acceptance <lb />
warm approval settle the question <lb />
of tho manner in which her wishes <lb />
shall be carried out. Certainly <lb />
Mr. Atkinson's resolution will <lb />
voice the sentiments of the <lb />
and file of those splendid <lb />
which have rendered North <lb />
Carolina famous, whose com- <lb />
fort and efficiency the great War <lb />
Governor's provision so largely <lb />
contributed to. <lb />
A consisting of Mr. <lb />
James W. Atkinson, the, mayor, <lb />
Col. Cook, Dr. W. C <lb />
and Capt. Neil W. Ray has been <lb />
appointed to carry out the <lb />
ions of the resolution quoted, <lb />
to open, correspondence with the <lb />
veteran camps, or associations, of <lb />
the various counties, where such <lb />
exist, or to urge their immediate <lb />
formation for this purpose, where <lb />
they do not exist. It will be seen <lb />
at once that the tax on the several <lb />
County Veteran Associations will <lb />

The Populist party is not the <lb />

Democracy. Other parties have <lb />
the same thing, but we can- <lb />
not call the names of them now. <lb />
Populism is a fad that will pass <lb />
away with its novelty. Its sup- <lb />
porters will have to return to the <lb />
old parties or remain out of <lb />

time the only political party in <lb />
this country. All the people <lb />

of them remained in it until the <lb />
abolition question divided them. <lb />
A large majority of the people <lb />

people are essentially Demo- <lb />

THE REFLECTOR. <lb />
Greenville, N. C. <lb />
8.1 Editor <lb />
WEDNESDAY. MAY 30th, 1894. <lb />
Senator J. is at- <lb />
tending the meeting of Southern <lb />
Governors and ex-Governors at <lb />
i Ga-, to-day. Ho is one <lb />
I of the speakers at the meeting. <lb />
Entered at Om at Greenville, <lb />
S. C, as second-class mail matter. <lb />
Judge Armfield, one of our <lb />
State Superior Court Judges, is <lb />
quite sick, and Gov. Can- has <lb />
authorized J Brown to hold <lb />
the courts in his stead during his <lb />
sickness. <lb />
The Supreme Court ad- <lb />
for the spring term. <lb />
During its session cases have <lb />
been disposed cf. Business in <lb />
this court has fallen off in the <lb />
past few years, as it has also done <lb />
in the other courts. <lb />
The and <lb />
will be unveiled at Rich- <lb />
to-day. The occasion <lb />
expected to be of almost as much <lb />
interest as the unveiling of the <lb />
monument four years ago. <lb />
and Browne sen- <lb />
to jail by Judge Miller in <lb />
I Washington for violating the law <lb />
when they entered the city with <lb />
procession. His army is <lb />
said to be suffering for food and <lb />
the citizens of Washington have <lb />
sent out some provisions to their <lb />
camp. <lb />
This is truly commencement <lb />
season. The papers are full of <lb />
reports of them and will continue <lb />
so for about two weeks longer- <lb />
Well, it is the young people's day, <lb />
and they are entitled to occupy <lb />
much of the public eye. <lb />
Gordon, of Georgia, <lb />
delivered his lecture on <lb />
Confederate at the com <lb />
of the Normal and In- <lb />
School at Greensboro <lb />
last week. He has delivered this <lb />
lecture all over the South and it <lb />
Las won for him much applause. <lb />
Under the plan of Episcopal <lb />
visitation adopted by the <lb />
Conference of the Methodist <lb />
Church, Bishop Wilson will <lb />
side at the session of the Western <lb />
North Carolina Conference which <lb />
meets in Statesville November <lb />
and also at the session of the <lb />
North Carolina Conference which <lb />
meets in Durham November <lb />
The Conference also transferred <lb />
the North Carolina counties <lb />
in the territory of the <lb />
Conference to the North <lb />
Carolina Conference. <lb />
The Senate continues to ham- <lb />
mer away on the Tariff bill. What <lb />
headway they are making is not <lb />
very evident bat they ought to <lb />
bear this in mind, that the people <lb />
demand speedy Senator <lb />
did not add to his <lb />
reputation by his apology in his <lb />
speech a few days ago for those <lb />
who have been delaying action- <lb />
There is no excuse for so <lb />
much time to obey the will of the <lb />
people so expressed <lb />
nearly two years ago. Action, <lb />
action is what the people demand <lb />
and not so much debating. <lb />
Senator Bryan, of Nebraska, <lb />
delivered the address to the <lb />
young ladies last week at the <lb />
closing exercises of the Normal <lb />
and Industrial School, at Greens- <lb />
He took for his subject <lb />
the of This was <lb />
rather an unusual subject for an <lb />
address to a female school, but <lb />
doubtless the Nebraska orator <lb />
had in his mind the men and cot <lb />
the girls when he selected his <lb />
subject- The address is spoken <lb />
of as a very fine one and further <lb />
emphasizes the fact that he is a <lb />
free silver man to such an <lb />
that he even the pleasure <lb />
of tickling the la lies with some- <lb />
thing more congenial <lb />
on an occasion when he <lb />
might, with his eloquence, have <lb />
won the hearts of all. <lb />
Col. Harry ad <lb />
dressed a Populist meeting in <lb />
Kinston, commenting upon <lb />
which the Free Press <lb />
Col. Skinner presented his side <lb />
of the political question about as <lb />
strong as it can be presented. He <lb />
said a deal that The Free <lb />
agrees with, but we do not <lb />
agree with many things he said. <lb />
He pointed out the short comings <lb />
of Cleveland and the present <lb />
Democratic congress, and gave <lb />
figures to show that it is <lb />
for the south to ever go in a <lb />
national Democratic convention <lb />
and nominate a candidate not <lb />
controlled by influences. <lb />
be something in what <lb />
he said on this line, but it appears <lb />
to us that there is even less hope <lb />
of electing a Populist president <lb />
even if it was desirable. Seems <lb />
to us that about the only chance <lb />
for the south is to cut loose entire- <lb />
from national conventions and <lb />
for each State to nominate and <lb />
elect real presidential electors, <lb />
with instructions to vote in the <lb />
electoral college for men who <lb />
come nearest to representing the <lb />
principles enunciated by the <lb />
State platform. However, the <lb />
presidential question is two years <lb />
off yet, and we believe the proper <lb />
thing for southern and North <lb />
Carolina Democrats to do now is <lb />
to elect their State, county and <lb />
congressional tickets. Car <lb />
can do no more, as to <lb />
matters, in the next <lb />
than to send men to congress <lb />
to vote like North Carolina be- <lb />
The congressmen from <lb />
this and every district in this <lb />
State, except two, have done that <lb />
in the present congress. No <lb />
ons fault can be found with our <lb />
local government, to change <lb />
Which would exceedingly <lb />
the great majority <lb />
of the best citizens of the State <lb />
will continue in the Democratic <lb />
party, <lb />
WASHINGTON LETTER. <lb />
our <lb />
Washington D. C- May <lb />
President Cleveland on his <lb />
return to Washington found a <lb />
radical change for the better in <lb />
the tariff bill situation. Senator <lb />
Teller, after his very sensible <lb />
speech, telling the <lb />
Senators that they no longer had <lb />
any reasonable excuse for delay- <lb />
the final vote on the bill, <lb />
clinched his argument forcing <lb />
a test vote on a motion to lay the <lb />
bill on the table. That motion <lb />
I received the vote of every <lb />
present, in ail, and every <lb />
Democrat them <lb />
Senator Hill, in all, voted <lb />
against it, as also did three <lb />
lists. That vote removed the last <lb />
vestige of doubt about the pas <lb />
sage of the bill, and leaves Re- <lb />
publican without a <lb />
leg to stand on, the Republicans <lb />
having claimed that they were <lb />
justified in using the tactics they <lb />
did by Democratic opposition to <lb />
the bill. They will now be given <lb />
a last chance to agree upon a <lb />
time to take the final vote Should <lb />
refuse the bill will be forced <lb />
to a vote. There is a feeling of <lb />
relief to know that the end is in <lb />
j sight. <lb />
The Senate committee has <lb />
j eluded the taking of testimony in <lb />
the bribery case, and it is be- <lb />
that the report will state <lb />
the belief of the committee to be <lb />
that Baits attempted to bribe <lb />
Senators and Kyle. The <lb />
committee is now taking <lb />
concerning the sugar trust <lb />
and its alleged relations with <lb />
Senators. <lb />
The House committee on Naval <lb />
has begun the <lb />
of the Carnegie armor plate <lb />
I contracts, authorized by the <lb />
resolution this week adopted by <lb />
the House. It will probably be <lb />
a long as it covers all the <lb />
armor by the Carnegie <lb />
companies from the beginning of <lb />
their contracts with the govern <lb />
Senator Walsh, of Georgia, was <lb />
naturally very much surprised <lb />
when he learned that the Brother- <lb />
hood of Locomotive Engineers <lb />
regarded his bill against any <lb />
stoppage or interference with <lb />
trains carrying mails as being <lb />
aimed against them, and, after <lb />
telling the Senate that as a <lb />
printer his sympathies <lb />
were and always had been with <lb />
the laboring men of the country, <lb />
of whom he was proud to be one, <lb />
he introduced an amended bill, <lb />
which he thinks cannot possibly <lb />
be anybody. <lb />
The title of the bill la protect <lb />
the United States and it <lb />
provides that any person who <lb />
shall rob or attempt to rob or <lb />
maliciously obstruct or retard for <lb />
the purpose of robbery the pass- <lb />
i age of cay railroad train on <lb />
i which the mails a;, carried shall <lb />
be punished by in;, at <lb />
hard labor not less than one nor <lb />
more than twenty years. <lb />
Attorney General in <lb />
answer to a resolution adopted by <lb />
the Senate last week, asking what <lb />
action had been taken against the <lb />
trusts under the act of July <lb />
1890, has furnished the Senate <lb />
with the record of a suit begun <lb />
against the various firms com- <lb />
posing the sugar trust, which <lb />
was dismissed in the U. S. Court <lb />
for the Eastern District of Penn- <lb />
with costs against the <lb />
government, appealed to the Cir- <lb />
court, which affirmed the <lb />
action of the District court, and <lb />
which is now before the U. S. <lb />
Supremo Court on appeal. Mr. <lb />
does not say so, but it is <lb />
inferred from his communication <lb />
i and the accompanying documents <lb />
that he considers the much talk- <lb />
ed-about Sherman anti-trust lows <lb />
worthless one Other people <lb />
as much when it was <lb />
first proposed by Mr. Sherman as <lb />
a substitute for a more stringent <lb />
measure proposed by Democratic <lb />
I Senators. <lb />
Brown and Jones a-o in <lb />

the House was sitting as a com- <lb />

publicans have given notice that <lb />
they will call for a separate yea <lb />
and nay vote on the amendment <lb />
when the bill is reported back to <lb />
the House from the committee on <lb />
the whole, and they will make a <lb />
desperate attempt to get enough <lb />
Democrats to vote with them to <lb />
defeat the amendment. <lb />

troubled again until January, 1893. I was taken <lb />
down with the grip which settled In the previous- <lb />
affected limb, sores gathering where there <lb />
had been scars, one In particular penetrating to <lb />
the bone. The whole trout my leg <lb />
to ankle seemed to be <lb />
A Mats of Corruption. <lb />
I could get but little ease and comfort and less <lb />
benefit the medical treatment I received. <lb />
Rome of my friends advised me to have the lea <lb />
amputated, but I hesitated, not wanting to loss <lb />
a limb. I saw an advertisement In <lb />
paper embracing a testimonial for Hood's <lb />
one Mr. John <lb />
what Hood's had done for his son. t <lb />
to try Hood's bought <lb />
six bottles of It about three months ago. I had <lb />
not taken It two months when I could see It was <lb />
doing me more good than anything I hail taken. <lb />
I have now used about three bottles. The sores <lb />
hays all healed up and <lb />
My Limb la Perfectly Sound. <lb />
It has benefited my general health and t <lb />
am now able to work at my trade. Hood's <lb />
receives all the praise and I cannot <lb />
recommend It enough for the good It dona <lb />

been a veritable bonanza the last <lb />
two weeks. Many fishing parties <lb />
have been down, and made fine <lb />
catches. Fish are more <lb />
this season than for several <lb />
years. <lb />
The Presbyterian Sunday <lb />
School which meets every Sun- <lb />
day morning is growing steadily <lb />
in numbers. The session last <lb />
Sunday was the largest attended <lb />
and most interesting since the <lb />
school was organized a few weeks <lb />
ago. <lb />
The Atlanta miss- <lb />
word for June is as <lb />
with the <lb />
dark lantern closed and hid <lb />
his arm, he waited behind a <lb />
ragged rock in the next to <lb />
the clothes for the <lb />
Married. <lb />
At the residence of the bride's <lb />
father, Mr. J. W. Allen, near <lb />
Greenville, yesterday evening at <lb />
o'clock, Mr.-J. R. Cory and Miss <lb />
Priscilla Allen were married. The <lb />
happy couple will come to Green- <lb />
ville to day and make their home <lb />
in the Cherry building in Skin- <lb />

Christian College Commencement. <lb />
The Commencement exercises <lb />
of Carolina Christian College <lb />
will be held at Ayden Friday <lb />
morning and night, June 1st. <lb />
Major Harding of Greenville will <lb />
deliver an address at A. M. <lb />
Friends from a distance will be <lb />
entertained, but there will be no <lb />
public dinner. Those who wish <lb />
will carry their dinner to the <lb />
grounds. L T. <lb />
Borrowers. <lb />
Any kind of habitual borrower <lb />
is objectionable ; but a newspaper <lb />
borrower is past <lb />
Suppose when a man starts his <lb />
children to school he should <lb />
undertake to borrow books for <lb />
them all the Well, it <lb />
not be long before his <lb />
neighbors would get tired of <lb />
lending books. So it is with <lb />
newspapers. Borrowing <lb />
is a very small <lb />
at it as you may, and is especially <lb />
small on the part of the borrower. <lb />

Commencements. <lb />
We also received an invitation <lb />
to the commencement exercises <lb />
of Oxford Female Seminary, May <lb />
27th to 29th. <lb />
The editor thanks Miss <lb />
Sugg for an invitation <lb />
commencement exercises of <lb />
Louisburg Female College, June <lb />
5th and 6th. <lb />
Mr. W- C of Pitt, <lb />
sends the Reflector an <lb />
to the second annual com- <lb />
of the A. M Col- <lb />
ledge, Raleigh, June 17th to 20th. <lb />
Hon. W. H Hatch, of Missouri, <lb />
will deliver the address. <lb />
The King's Daughters. <lb />
The visit of Mrs- I. C of <lb />
New York, Corresponding <lb />
of the Central Council of the <lb />
King's Daughters and Sons, and <lb />
the series of meetings she held <lb />
in Greenville, has caused a great <lb />
revival of interest in the work of <lb />
the circles here. The first meet- <lb />
was held in the Presbyterian <lb />
church Friday afternoon and <lb />
that night Mrs. Davis delivered <lb />
an address to a large audience in <lb />
the Opera House. after- <lb />
noon another meeting was held <lb />
in the Presbyterian church- Sun- <lb />
day morning she delivered an <lb />
other address at the close of the <lb />
Children's Day exercises in the <lb />
Opera House, and in the after- <lb />
noon a consecration meeting was <lb />
held in the Episcopal church. <lb />
Cur people were charmed with <lb />
Mrs. Davis and her visit here <lb />
will result in much good. She <lb />
was the guest of Mrs. J. B. Cherry <lb />
while in Greenville. <lb />
The Magistrates at the meeting <lb />
next Monday will have to elect a <lb />
Board of County <lb />
and Board of Education. We do <lb />
not know how many of the present <lb />
incumbents will stand for <lb />
but Pitt county has good <lb />
boards, both Commissioners and <lb />
Educations. <lb />
The Methodist Sunday School <lb />
had Children's Day exercises in <lb />
the Opera House Sunday morn- <lb />
in the presence of a large <lb />
congregation. Mrs. I. C. Davis, <lb />
of New York, presided over the <lb />
meeting and at the close of the <lb />
interesting made a <lb />
delightful half hour's talk. <lb />
So much important work to be <lb />
done at the meeting of the <lb />
of the Peace next Monday <lb />
levying electing a Board <lb />
of County Commissioners, a <lb />
Board of Education and a Super <lb />
of Public Instruction <lb />
ought to bring every Magistrate <lb />
in the county to the meeting. <lb />
Mr. B. H- Hearne, mail carrier, <lb />
tells us that Mr. Frank Day, a <lb />
young man of Tarboro committed <lb />
suicide Sunday. He had been <lb />
on a spree and took an ounce of <lb />
laudanum. It is generally be- <lb />
that taking such an <lb />
overdose of laudanum was <lb />
but was. only trying to <lb />
pain from which he was <lb />
The <lb />
At the competitive examination <lb />
held Edenton last week for the <lb />
appointment of cadets to <lb />
and West Point from this <lb />
district, Pitt county came out <lb />
with three fourths the honors. <lb />
There were three applicants for <lb />
each position before the <lb />
board. Two men from <lb />
county, Messrs. Lyman <lb />
ten and Grimes, stood for <lb />
the Annapolis appointment, and <lb />
one from Mr. Harry Harding, <lb />
stood for West Point. Mr. Cot- <lb />
ten stood the best examination <lb />
for and received the <lb />
appointment, while Mr. Grimes <lb />
second best was made <lb />
For West Point Mr. S. <lb />
T. Ansell, of Currituck, received <lb />
the highest marks and was given <lb />
the appointment, with Mr. Hard- <lb />
as alternate. Mr. Ansell was <lb />
a pupil of the school taught by <lb />
Prof. Sheep who was the head of <lb />
the examining board. This gives <lb />
county one appointment and <lb />
two alternates. The appointees <lb />
go on to eland another <lb />
at the academies and in case <lb />
of a fa-lure to the alternate <lb />
is a trial. <lb />

Some of our boys went to Rob- <lb />

The soldier boys got back home <lb />
safe from Raleigh last Wednesday <lb />
evening and had many pleasant <lb />
experiences to tell of their trip to <lb />
the laying of the corner stone. <lb />
The only draw was when <lb />
Coot Whichard tried to eat up <lb />
everything in Raleigh but found <lb />
it was more than he could <lb />
told. <lb />
Four hundred young shad ware <lb />
recently placed in Neuse river <lb />
near and about the <lb />
same number have been turned <lb />
loose in river near <lb />
Elizabeth City. Why cannot <lb />
something like that be done for <lb />

arguing that this region has a <lb />
fish loving people. <lb />
The Town Council held a <lb />
meeting Monday and took steps <lb />
to immediately have the town <lb />
thoroughly cleaned up and limed, <lb />
The citizens should join in this <lb />
movement and give their premises <lb />
proper attention. This weather <lb />
is conducive to sickness and too <lb />
much care can not be given to <lb />
cleanliness. <lb />
Mr. Allen Warren says the <lb />
fruit prospects for year are <lb />
the poorest he has noticed in <lb />
many years past. Peaches will <lb />
be almost a total failure, there <lb />
will probably not be over one- <lb />
fourth a crop of early grapes and <lb />
about a crop of the <lb />
James variety. There are plenty <lb />
of common plums. <lb />
Can't you drop in the <lb />

a GROWING MARKET. and tastes, me my <lb />
j first order for thorn when on a <lb />
Greenville is Making Steady Progress London, and since then I <lb />
and Has a Bright Future, , . . , <lb />
nave my work cut out to cope <lb />
with the extraordinary demand. <lb />
Greenville, N. C-, is one of the <lb />
young tobacco markets, but it is <lb />
a healthy youngster and is grow- <lb />
right along- <lb />
The market was established <lb />
only a few years ago. For a <lb />
season or two previous, tho farm- <lb />
of the neighboring county <lb />
had been experimenting in to- <lb />
culture, and their success <lb />
was so marked that they went <lb />
into it as a regular business. They <lb />
have made money at it, too, for <lb />
they produce bright stock of <lb />
excellent quality. There is no <lb />
better grown anywhere. <lb />
Tho lauds are well adapted to <lb />
tobacco, and the climate is such <lb />
they have little to fear in the way <lb />
of frosts and cold spells. They <lb />
are reasonably sure of a good <lb />
crop every year and they made a <lb />
goo J one last year. <lb />
Greenville is pretty certain to <lb />
become one of the leading mar- <lb />
of Eastern North Carolina, <lb />
and its enterprising citizens are <lb />
leaving no stone unturned to <lb />
build it up- Next fall it will have <lb />
another warehouse, a number of <lb />
new and strong additions <lb />
to its corps of buyers. The <lb />
American Tobacco Company <lb />
shows its faith tho of <lb />
the town by the contract <lb />
for a large leaf factory to be erect- <lb />
ed at once. <lb />
All admire pluck, and that is <lb />
what the Greenville people are <lb />
displaying. The efforts they are <lb />
putting forth, backed by the merit <lb />
of the article they have to offer <lb />
to the world, is bound to win. <lb />
We look for Greenville to largely <lb />
increase her sales the coming <lb />
season- <lb />
Prominent among those who <lb />
have been doing hard and <lb />
work for this market is Mr. <lb />
O. L. Joy nor. Mr. Joyner has <lb />
a gallant fight. He is a <lb />
hustler, a strong writer and a <lb />
business man of foresight and <lb />
grit. Greenville is greatly in- <lb />
to him for the position it <lb />
has taken among the tobacco <lb />
markets and for its promising <lb />
Tobacco Journal. <lb />

Very little has been said of an <lb />
abuse which is steadily growing <lb />
up in Congress. For many years <lb />
it has been customary for <lb />
who have no use for certain <lb />
documents or agricultural seeds <lb />
to exchange them with other <lb />
members for such as they do re- <lb />
quire. In making those ex <lb />
changes a clerk is the <lb />
intermediary, another <lb />
person. This other person may <lb />
be denominated a <lb />
Ho not only sways off a <lb />
an adhesive <lb />
tho ingredient of which an- <lb />
other secret. Look at <lb />
The tips are the petals <lb />
of Niel roses, costing <lb />
at this time of the year half a <lb />
crown apiece. We have a fresh <lb />
supply from Italy and France <lb />
every week, and it takes one rose <lb />
to tip half-a-dozen cigarettes- <lb />
Then we use damask roses a <lb />
great deal, and the son of a very <lb />
wealthy tradesmen actually <lb />
brought in a dozen choice <lb />
cut from his own conservatory to <lb />
be made up into cigarette tips. <lb />
Expensive I should think <lb />
so; but money is no object to this <lb />
class of customers. Each tip <lb />
takes quite five minutes to affix, <lb />
so you can't wonder at tho cost <lb />
per charged, can <lb />
you and we have them oven <lb />
higher than that. They are cool <lb />
to the lips, and possess a certain <lb />
fragrance, the sort of whiff to fol- <lb />
low a light repast of poach <lb />
and peacock's brains. Oh, <lb />
yes, the gold-leaf tip has quit <lb />
died vulgar, in <lb />
fact. What next Haven't the <lb />
faintest idea; bat I dare say we <lb />
shall having some modem <lb />
Monte coming along with <lb />
a shipping for <lb />
booked for the penitentiary. As <lb />
tho woman was leading her child <lb />
out of tho court room, this wise <lb />
judge that the little one <lb />
was reluctant t go. A bright <lb />
idea struck him. He ordered tho <lb />
child placed its parents, <lb />
and at a considerable distance <lb />
from either, and then directed <lb />
each parent to call it. Tho moth- <lb />
called first, but the child paid <lb />
no attention to her. Then the <lb />
father called, and the child ran <lb />
him with every demonstration of <lb />
affection. <lb />
This sort of evidence changed <lb />
the judge's mind. He told the <lb />
prisoner that his child had saved <lb />
him, and that ho could not be- <lb />
that he was the brute his <lb />
wife had described- Tho prison- <lb />
was released, tho <lb />
was approved by all who <lb />
wore present- Evidently all <lb />
did not die with Solomon, <lb />
but if Solomon's decision in the <lb />
case of rival claimants for a <lb />

probable that the Brooklyn judge <lb />
would have reached a just de- <lb />

the member who t want it <lb />
or of his clerk. It was for a long <lb />
the habit of some members <lb />
who were not over to turn <lb />
over things not available to <lb />
clerks or other friends who made <lb />
a little by the transfer. <lb />
But latterly, I understand, <lb />
members actually sell outright <lb />
such documentary and <lb />
stuff as they find no use for. <lb />
But as it would not look right to <lb />
do this at first hand they employ <lb />
intermediaries. Tho broker dis <lb />
covers where he can negotiate, <lb />
takes the information to those in- <lb />
ascertains what ho can <lb />
procure the article for, buys <lb />
it. Ho then it to tho <lb />
wanting that precise thing. <lb />
Tho member, other words, <lb />
quietly pockets the pay in cash <lb />
for what Uncle Sam makes an <lb />
appropriation, supposing ho will <lb />
need the document or seed- <lb />
Thus, a city man does not <lb />

horse fancier; but the country <lb />

There is more than the usual <lb />
speculation at this time of year <lb />
as to the tobacco crop. <lb />

will do best to the <lb />

The has been tin propitious. <lb />

that there will be a fifty <lb />
