It is thought the <lb />
pen was lost by a soldier <lb />
and lay in the ground for <lb />
years. It is now in good <lb />

this notice with it. <lb />
THE HARD TIMES. <lb />
do not find the times so hard, <lb />
all, for while produce is very <lb />
low what we have to buy is <lb />
low, and I think if <lb />
the time spent in of <lb />
the times had spout at work <lb />
on tho farm the times would have <lb />
been much <lb />
The above sentence is copied <lb />
from a personal letter and was <lb />
not intended for publication- The <lb />
Herald uses it because it <lb />
truer words wore never spoken. <lb />
The writer is a practical farmer, <lb />
has spent hi whole life on his <lb />
farm and has always lived at homo. <lb />
From a small beginning as a <lb />
young man he has gone on year <lb />
by year, working intelligently <lb />
and systematically, and now owns <lb />
a large body of land, a <lb />
quantity of which is in a high <lb />
state of cultivation. Farming <lb />
has been profitable to him because <lb />
he t his life business, and <lb />
was not satisfied to own the hind <lb />
but tilled it and made it <lb />
As a result of this he <lb />
accumulated a comfortable for- <lb />
tune, besides which ho has raised <lb />
eight children given all of <lb />
them who are grown a much <lb />
education than is given the <lb />
average farmer's child. <lb />
The Herald knows this farmer <lb />
well, and it knows that he has <lb />
made more than nine tenths of <lb />
his money from the legitimate <lb />
of his own work on the <lb />
farm. He is not what is termed <lb />
a large farmer, his operations, we <lb />
believe, not being greater at any <lb />
time than a four-horse crop. For <lb />
several years past he has been <lb />
incapacitated from active work <lb />
by severe sickness and is now <lb />
confined to his house a good <lb />
deal of the time. But ho has <lb />
kept an to his farm all the <lb />
time and has made money every <lb />
As going to show why this <lb />
farmer has boon successful one <lb />
further fact will given in ad- <lb />
to what is stated above. <lb />
Not long since the writer spent a <lb />
short while at his house and in <lb />
the course of a conversation at <lb />
the dinner table was told by a <lb />
member cf his family that he <lb />
then had in his smoke-house <lb />
enough home-made bacon to sup- <lb />
ply his family for two years- He <lb />
also makes tho greatest plenty of <lb />
everything else that is needed <lb />
for his table. <lb />
The Herald has written at this <lb />
length because it believes that <lb />
the of this farmer can be <lb />
profitably followed by every far- <lb />
mer in the State- And others <lb />
will meet with the same success <lb />
if they pursue the same <lb />
and business methods in <lb />
their farming. No name is call- <lb />
ed because we are not authorized <lb />
to do so and do not think the <lb />
writer of the letter would be <lb />
pleased to have his name made <lb />
public without his knowledge- <lb />
He does not feel the hard times <lb />
because he makes all his supplies <lb />
and has money to spare, <lb />
even though his produce sells for <lb />
a low price- There are many <lb />
other farmers in like independent <lb />

possibilities of its soil <lb />
unrivaled climate, the <lb />
known wealth of its sea food pro- <lb />
ducts, its possession of the great- <lb />
est deep-water port on the South <lb />

with the possibilities of <lb />
their development, it must strike <lb />
every thoughtful citizen of North <lb />
Carolina that its people are not <lb />
availing themselves of their op- <lb />
and growing more <lb />
prosperous with each succeeding <lb />
year. <lb />
Tho number of North Carolin- <lb />
who ate eagerly taking ad- <lb />
vantage of these opportunities <lb />
are too few; the majority seem <lb />
satisfied to look on and give scant <lb />
encouragement to workers <lb />
when all ought to be steadily at <lb />
work developing the State and ad- <lb />
ding to its growth and their own <lb />
wealth. <lb />
While tho present generation <lb />
of North Carolinians take a <lb />
pride in the record of the <lb />
Old North State, its colonial and <lb />
later history, and point with en- <lb />
to the deeds of tho men, <lb />
their ancestors, who made <lb />
North Carolina famous in the <lb />
history, can it said <lb />
that with these splendid records, <lb />

The prizes received at the <lb />
World's Fair by this State and <lb />
numbering in medals <lb />
and awards one hundred and <lb />
twenty-four, indicates but slight- <lb />
what this State could exhibit. <lb />
The exhibits from this State at <lb />
tho World's Fair were not what <lb />
they ought to have been, but the <lb />
work was done under generally <lb />
adverse conditions and only <lb />
through tho perseverance of a <lb />

Tho lack of action on tho part <lb />
of tho majority of the people in <lb />

spirit lacking in every element <lb />
that has hitherto made North <lb />
Carolina a progressive State. <lb />
The proposed organization of a <lb />
society in this State which will <lb />
have for its study the early his- <lb />

records of the early colonial and <lb />

IV IS TO REMAIN IN <lb />
This well put statement and <lb />
admonition is from the Sampson <lb />
Democrat s <lb />
The Populists talk as if they <lb />
expect to carry the earth at the <lb />
next election. They have nothing <lb />
but tho desire to base their ex- <lb />
upon. They will not <lb />
carry a State alone- Their <lb />
boast that they will carry North <lb />
Carolina is not alarming in the <lb />
least. will come as near <lb />
doing so as they did two years <lb />
ago. Democracy is identical with <lb />
good government in North <lb />
and it is going to remain in <lb />
power. Remember this and <lb />
don't go on the Populist <lb />
up Salt river. <lb />
The Populists have the zeal of <lb />
new recruits and claim great J <lb />
things, unmindful of how difficult; <lb />
a thing it is to destroy an old <lb />
party or to build up a new one- j <lb />
At first a good many people <lb />
and, let us say, some very excel- <lb />
lent attracted to <lb />
their standard by tho novelty <lb />
of their alleged principles. No <lb />
party had ever before in this or j <lb />
any other country announced in i <lb />
terms or by implication that it is <lb />
the duty of the government to <lb />
support the people, and no party , <lb />
had ever before promised every- <lb />
body everything- It was fad, <lb />
how illusory, appeared as soon as <lb />
the test of reason was applied. <lb />
When it was thumped it was <lb />
found to be hollow. In the <lb />
West its adherents falling <lb />
away and finding their former <lb />
party associations. In North <lb />
Carolina, it is not so strong as it <lb />
was two years ago. <lb />
As for Populism prevailing in <lb />
North Carolina this year or any <lb />
other year, that is not to be <lb />
thought of. No is tho idea <lb />
of a Republican return to power <lb />
in this State to be thought of. <lb />
Government is a serious thing. <lb />
Tho present State government is <lb />
the product of twenty-three years <lb />
of the best labor of the best men <lb />
among us. Tho overthrew of the <lb />
Democratic party means the <lb />
destruction of a government <lb />
which is as nearly perfect as any <lb />
human institution can be and <lb />
replacement knows <lb />
what Tho conservatism and <lb />
good of our people, their <lb />
sure the dangers <lb />
of the past, will not this year <lb />
nor hereafter permit the <lb />
of this fabric. Our Sampson <lb />
contemporary says truly that <lb />
is identical with <lb />
good government in North Car- <lb />

county has more interest in the <lb />
public schools than be, for, as we <lb />
have him repeatedly say, <lb />
the success of private schools is <lb />
due in a large measure to tho <lb />
of public schools, and. <lb />
much as good public schools <lb />
ways serve as feeders to higher <lb />
grade private schools, his interest <lb />
in them is all the It is <lb />
well known that Pitt county has <lb />
at no time had a better or more <lb />
successful teacher than Prof. <lb />
and as the school law <lb />
in speaking of the selection of <lb />
a Superintendent <lb />
shall be of good moral char- <lb />
liberal education, and <lb />
he shall otherwise be qualified to <lb />
discharge the duties of the office <lb />
as required by law, due <lb />
BUBO GIVEN TO EXPERIENCE IX <lb />
ho is the man who <lb />
should be chosen for the position <lb />
on the first Monday June- <lb />
The only objection that has <lb />
been raised to Prof. as <lb />
Superintendent of Public In- <lb />
has come through as- <lb />
for the position, and all <lb />
they have been able to say <lb />
that should be in his is <lb />
that be has such a large private <lb />
that he does not visit the <lb />
public schools as much as would a <lb />
man who had nothing else to look <lb />
after. Well, do the people of Pitt <lb />
county want a man for <lb />
who else to <lb />
do ride over the county and <lb />
draw the entire support of him- <lb />
self and family from the already <lb />
school fund Do they <lb />
want a man who has proved a <lb />
failure at every business he has <lb />
T best test of a <lb />
man's capabilities for managing <lb />
the affairs of others, either pub- <lb />
or private, is that he has <lb />
executive ability to manage <lb />
his own affairs successfully. So <lb />
far as visiting the schools is con- <lb />
there is no need for a <lb />
Superintendent going to them <lb />
more than once a year, and going <lb />
oftener is just so much waste of <lb />
the school fund. Of course the <lb />
people are aware that the Super- <lb />
is not a salaried officer, <lb />
but his pay is regulated at so <lb />
much per day for the days he is <lb />
engaged tho work. If a <lb />
man has but else to depend <lb />
on except what he makes out of <lb />
the position he will apt to <lb />
take advantage of every excuse <lb />
that permits a day's salary being <lb />
drawn from school fund. <lb />
Therefore it is to Prof. <lb />
credit that he has a successful <lb />
private school, and the people <lb />
need have no fears that ho will <lb />
draw a single dollar from the <lb />
school money that he does not <lb />
render full value therefor. <lb />
Again, it is well known that <lb />
during the spring months that <lb />
Prof- has been in the <lb />
office there have been very few of <lb />
the public schools open, as they <lb />
are usually taught in the summer <lb />
months, therefore has <lb />
no need of visiting them. When <lb />
they open this summer it will be <lb />
found that they receive all <lb />
attention from him. The <lb />
public school interests will never <lb />
suffer or lag while he is <lb />
and the Magistrates will <lb />
do a wise thing by keeping him <lb />
in the position. <lb />

It is now easy to understand <lb />
why this government took such <lb />

from information that has leaked <lb />

showing the financial condition <lb />
of the town at the close of the <lb />

the statement shows a creditable <lb />

Barn and Stables Burned. <lb />
On Saturday evening Mr. H. B. <lb />
Tucker, Hying a few miles from <lb />
Greenville, lost his barn and <lb />
by fire. The fire was dis- <lb />
covered about o'clock and was <lb />
burning on tho back side of the <lb />
barn from the ground to the eaves <lb />
From the way it was burning it <lb />
could not be told whether the fire <lb />
started on the inside or outside <lb />
of the building and no idea could <lb />
be had as to its origin. Besides <lb />
the buildings Mr- Tucker lost <lb />
about twenty-five barrels of corn, <lb />
three stacks of fodder a <lb />
bushels, of peas. Tho loss is <lb />
quite heavy on him- <lb />
The <lb />
Mr. Hairy Harding left Mon- <lb />

tho competitive examination for <lb />
the West Point Two <lb />
other young men from this county <lb />
Grimes, Grimesland, are <lb />
also present to stand the <lb />
nation, the former as an applicant <lb />
for Annapolis and the latter for <lb />
West Point. The examining <lb />
board consists of Hon. W. D. <lb />
Pruden, of Edenton, Prof. S- L. <lb />
Sheep, of Elizabeth City, and <lb />
some physician to selected <lb />
the others meet. Dr. C. J. <lb />
of this town, was first <lb />
appointed but could not accept. <lb />
No doubt there will be several <lb />
other applicants besides those <lb />
from Pitt and we hope our county <lb />
will bring away the honors. <lb />

Attention Potato Men. <lb />
All potato growers will road <lb />
with interest the large advertise- <lb />
on our first page to-day of <lb />
Williams Tayloe, of Washing- <lb />
ton. These hustling and stirring <lb />
young men represent a number <lb />
of the strongest best potato <lb />
firms in the country, and this ad- <lb />
gives points to ship- <lb />
that will save them money. <lb />
A glance at the length of time <lb />
these firms have been in business <lb />
and the testimonials of the many <lb />
good men who have in past years <lb />
been shipping to them, proves at <lb />
once their record for honesty <lb />
square dealing. Every potato <lb />
shipper certainly wants tho very <lb />
highest market prices for his <lb />
crop and that is what those firms <lb />
promise to get for you. Williams <lb />

Little May Smith Dead. <lb />
Death has again visited us and <lb />
removed from earth and fond, <lb />
loving parents their idol child. <lb />
Little May Smith, aged years, <lb />
daughter of Key- and Mrs. G. F. <lb />
Smith, died Sunday afternoon at <lb />
a quarter past two o'clock. She <lb />
had Buffered intensely for two <lb />
weeks, but bore it patiently until <lb />
summoned on that quiet Lord's <lb />
day evening to that eternal rest, <lb />
unto that land free from pain and <lb />
suffering and radiant with <lb />
bliss. These two weeks of <lb />
patient watching over the little <lb />
sick one were peculiarly distress- <lb />
to the anxious parents, but <lb />
having long since put their trust <lb />
in their Saviour they are con- <lb />
that their darling child has <lb />
only gone before them and that <lb />
they will see her again. Blessed <lb />
consolation. They but <lb />
not as those who know not their <lb />
Saviour. The home is saddened <lb />
but God's sunshine will some into <lb />
their hearts. The heartfelt <lb />
of the entire town go out <lb />
to Mr. and Mrs. Smith whom all <lb />
have learned to love. Earth has <lb />
lost a flower, heaven has gained a <lb />
jewel, and all of us are warned to <lb />
be ready when the summons <lb />
comes. The little body was <lb />
placed at Cherry Hill <lb />
on Monday morning, there <lb />
to await the resurrection. <lb />

A Good One. <lb />
You seldom find a more affable <lb />
gentlemen than Hawks, <lb />

smiles and as many friends <lb />
in a day's run as any man on the <lb />
road. The ladies always say <lb />
they never attention when <lb />
traveling on his train. <lb />
Lightning's <lb />
There is no accounting for the <lb />
capers of lightning sometimes. <lb />
Ono of the most peculiar freaks <lb />
we have heard of was told us <lb />
Monday by Mr. N. R. Cory, of <lb />
Swift Creek. It occurred one day <lb />
last week at the home of Charles <lb />
Lancaster who lives on the <lb />
place. A clothes wire <lb />
hung his yard, one end of it <lb />
attached to an oak tree and the <lb />
other end to the smokehouse. <lb />
Lightning struck this wire <lb />
destroying all the metal with the <lb />
exception of a few inches at each <lb />
end, leaving the cotton string <lb />
through center of it intact. Not <lb />
a trace of tho wire could be <lb />
except a little piece attached to <lb />
the tree a little piece hanging <lb />
on the nail in the smokehouse. <lb />
The only marks left by the light- <lb />
was a slight tearing up of <lb />
the roots of the tree th- <lb />
timbers smoked around the nail <lb />
in the smokehouse, the nail was <lb />
also partially drawn out. How <lb />
the lightning destroyed the metal <lb />
of the clothes wire and left the <lb />
string is a mystery. <lb />
Three Men Narrowly Escape <lb />
There was a wind and <lb />
hail storm in a portion of Swift <lb />
Creek township last Thursday. <lb />
Tho track of the storm was from <lb />
one-and-a-half to two miles wide <lb />
and did much damage through <lb />
the section it traversed. W. H- <lb />
Tripp, Bert and a <lb />
boy were out fishing see- <lb />
the storm approaching started <lb />
home. The storm overtook them <lb />
and they ran into a gin house or. <lb />
premises of William Laughing- <lb />
house for shelter. While in this <lb />
gin house, which was three <lb />
stories high, tho building was <lb />
blown all to pieces, the <lb />
coming down upon them. <lb />
leg was broken <lb />
above and the other two <lb />
were seriously injured. Tripp <lb />
and the got out and went <lb />
to the house of a about <lb />
thirty yards away. They were <lb />
too badly hurt to render <lb />
to did not <lb />
know in just what part of the <lb />
wreck he was- after <lb />
several efforts to <lb />
himself from tho debris and <lb />
crawled through the pelting hail <lb />
to the same house where he was <lb />
taken in and cared for with the <lb />
others. The hail continued <lb />
about half an hour, the stones <lb />
varying in size from hickory <lb />
nuts to hen eggs. Crops were <lb />
badly torn up but being small <lb />
may out grow the damage. It <lb />
looks almost miraculous that <lb />
either of the men escaped alive <lb />
from the gin house. <lb />
James School Commencement. <lb />
Prof. C- H. James closed his <lb />
school at last week. <lb />
Besides having perhaps the <lb />
largest school the county, he <lb />
have one of the largest com- <lb />
and draw the largest <lb />
crowd to it of any teacher we <lb />
know. His commencement <lb />
last week occupied both <lb />
and Friday. It was <lb />
our pleasure to present at the <lb />
day exercises on Friday. Ample <lb />
arrangements had been made for <lb />
the vast crowd to get the fullest <lb />
enjoyment from the occasion. A <lb />
large stage was erected against <lb />
the east side of the school build <lb />
with seats for <lb />
reds of people extending well out <lb />
in the grove. At o'clock the <lb />
address was delivered by Rev. <lb />
J. L. Winfield, of Washington, <lb />
editor of tho Watch Tower. He <lb />
was introduced by by Mr. B. M- <lb />
Whitehurst, one of tho teachers <lb />
of the school. Mr. Winfield's <lb />
subject was the of <lb />
and he handled it in a <lb />
manner very pleasing to his <lb />
large audience. At the close of <lb />
his address little Miss Bettie <lb />
Jones, daughter of Mr. S. M. <lb />
Jones and tho smallest pupil in <lb />
the school, gracefully presented <lb />
the speaker with a beautiful <lb />
bouquet. <lb />
intermission was then given <lb />
during which dinner was served <lb />
on the grounds. People through- <lb />
out the neighborhood had brought <lb />
well tilled baskets, and though <lb />
the crowd was large there was <lb />
enough to fed twice as many. <lb />
The dinner was excellent <lb />
served in genuine picnic style. <lb />
At o'clock the crowd was <lb />
called together again to witness <lb />
examination of classes. Prof. <lb />
James prefaced the examinations <lb />
with some remarks relative to <lb />
the work of the school and his <lb />
plans for the future. Ho then <lb />
examined tho classes in <lb />
the pupils showing by <lb />
the rapidity with which they <lb />
solved problems and gave correct <lb />
answers that they had been <lb />
thoroughly trained this branch. <lb />
Even many of the smaller pupils <lb />
showed themselves expert <lb />
Mr. B. M. Whitehurst <lb />
examined the history <lb />
composed of the larger pupils. <lb />
These also showed that they had <lb />
received efficient training <lb />
gave answers to questions as fast <lb />
as they could be propounded- <lb />
Then after some further remarks <lb />
by Prof. James and short address- <lb />
es by Messrs. Davenport <lb />
and J. W. Martin, the children <lb />
had some and songs <lb />
and the assembly was dismissed <lb />
until tho evening entertainment. <lb />
could not remain over to <lb />
the entertainment but learn that <lb />
it was of a very high order as <lb />
was also the one of the previous <lb />
evening. Prof. James has done a <lb />
good educational work at Grin- <lb />
He has already erected a <lb />
large building there, but his <lb />
school grew so rapidly that he <lb />
will have to double its size in <lb />
time for the fall session. Com- <lb />
and music departments <lb />
will be added to the fall course of <lb />
instruction. He is a young man <lb />
of great energy and will no <lb />
doubt meet with <lb />
locals. <lb />
The boys left Monday in much <lb />
finer spirits for the city <lb />
than when they left once before <lb />
for James city. Their <lb />
n mess showed no anxiety over a <lb />
probable fight this time, or the <lb />
possibility of being a target for <lb />
somebody to shoot at. <lb />
There has been a partial change <lb />
in the firm of J. R. Wynne Co. <lb />
wholesale fish and oyster dealers <lb />
at Washington, J. M- Gaskill sell- <lb />
his interest in the business to <lb />
It. M. Gaskill. The style of the <lb />
firm remains the same and all <lb />
orders sent there will receive <lb />
prompt attention- <lb />
The steamer Myers is on the <lb />
ways at Washington undergoing <lb />
her annual overhauling and re- <lb />
painting, and the steamer Green- <lb />
villa is making her trips. <lb />
Bill the veteran Master, <lb />
is in charge with his fund of good <lb />
humor and courteousness as <lb />
as ever. <lb />
Attention is called to the card <lb />
of Hotel Nicholson, at Washing- <lb />
ton. Traveling men all others <lb />
going that way can find no more <lb />
delightful stopping place- No <lb />
town in Eastern Carolina has a <lb />
better equipped or better kept <lb />
hotel, and a clever or <lb />
manager than George <lb />
Spencer can be found <lb />
It is a pleasure to stop with him. <lb />
