The colored of <lb/>

If it is true that tho white Rep- <lb/>

Prof. Dewar, whose recent <lb/>
and demonstrations on the <lb/>
liquefaction of oxygen attracted <lb/>
attention all over the world, says <lb/>
that while oxygen when liquefied <lb/>
is strongly magnetic it is a poor <lb/>
conductor of electricity. In other <lb/>
words, oxygen presents tho <lb/>
paradox of a non-conducting <lb/>
magnet. <lb/>
Carbonic acid gas, which is <lb/>

nation of mineral waters. <lb/>
The color of certain shrimps and <lb/>
crabs, and also the color of their <lb/>
eggs, are known to vary greatly <lb/>
with the surroundings. Those <lb/>
living in green sponges are much <lb/>
larger, lay vastly more eggs, <lb/>
which arc also a little larger, <lb/>
the shrimps are green and yellow; <lb/>
and the large claws are always, <lb/>
orange-red, while those of the <lb/>
brown sponges are red, blue or <lb/>

now confronts you of turning over <lb/>
our State to men who favor <lb/>

Valuable Hints for <lb/>
Domestic Circle. <lb/>
Nervous exhaustion is a term <lb/>
which carries with it a multitude <lb/>
of derangements of a nature not <lb/>
It means exhaustion <lb/>
tho very centers of life, an ex- <lb/>
which may more or <lb/>
less complete, It marks a failing <lb/>
or an of some <lb/>
part or tho whole of the nervous <lb/>
system. <lb/>
Nervous exhaustion may be the <lb/>
of the end, or it may be <lb/>
tile end of the beginning. At the <lb/>
same time it is simply an <lb/>
a weakened nerve force. <lb/>
A human being has, at best, but <lb/>
a certain lease of life, and this lease <lb/>

foods it must, of necessity, <lb/>
degenerate in one degree or another. <lb/>
simply a question of waste and <lb/>
and repair. When external <lb/>

wear away more energy than can <lb/>
i the nervous system be- <lb/>
gins to suffer, and though it may <lb/>
ye a resisting power born of a <lb/>
strong constitution, cannot but <lb/>
suffer in the long run. <lb/>
defined cases of nervous ex- <lb/>
have a distinct line of <lb/>
symptoms, prominent among <lb/>
which are a general feeling of <lb/>
dilated pupils, clammy <lb/>
hands and cold feet, bluish nails, a <lb/>
lack of color in the cheeks or a <lb/>
feverish Hushing, restlessness, in- <lb/>
ability to concentrate one's <lb/>
thoughts and sleeplessness and <lb/>
menial depression. Loss of weight <lb/>
and appetite and a general bodily <lb/>
decline are accompaniments. <lb/>
Nervous exhaustion comes from <lb/>
mental strain, from long exposure <lb/>
to wind and weather, from worry <lb/>
of all sorts, from disease affecting <lb/>
a mental depression or a waste of <lb/>
vitality and from excesses. It is <lb/>
more likely to develop in middle <lb/>
than at any period, <lb/>
though it does affect both the <lb/>
young and the old to some extent. <lb/>
The tune of life when the system <lb/>
is most hardy being selected seems <lb/>
to be attributable to the extra ac- <lb/>
which this period curries <lb/>
with it. A strong woman or a <lb/>
strong man may break down under <lb/>
circumstances which one of less <lb/>
vigorous constitution could with- <lb/>

and whatever its nature, there will be no <lb/>

at a critical period in the battle. It was <lb/>
no little thing brought two members <lb/>
of the republican National executive com- <lb/>
Wash- <lb/>
at this time. It was to confer with <lb/>
Sir. Harrison about the detail- of a move <lb/>
by which hope to arrest the mighty <lb/>
torrent of sentiment now sweeping <lb/>
time to avert defeat. It <lb/>
is not possible at this time to give the <lb/>
nature of this intended trickery, but the <lb/>
rumors of European inter- <lb/>
with our relations <lb/>
with San Domingo and the <lb/>
nations, which are already floating around <lb/>
make it probable that it will be <lb/>
t jingoistic, something to appeal to <lb/>
patriotic of young <lb/>
thoughtless voters and intended con- <lb/>
them that Mr. Harrison's <lb/>
t-ion is necessary for toe preservation of <lb/>
Rational honor. Be on guard; <lb/>

Whatever the of om commercial <lb/>
interests, there can tie no danger in <lb/>
electing r. democratic President. No <lb/>

National honor, and none ever will. <lb/>
Impress this upon the minds of <lb/>
democrats and all the lean trickery <lb/>
that can be hatched between now and <lb/>
election day not prevent a democrat- <lb/>
IS IT A SCARE-CROW <lb/>
It is strange how readily many <lb/>
white people of tho South will <lb/>
low themselves to be gulled and <lb/>
blindly duped into following <lb/>
and advocating measures that will <lb/>
work injury to their section and <lb/>
bring disgrace to their own doors. <lb/>
Look at the present political state <lb/>
of affairs and see with what <lb/>
some are duped into following tho <lb/>
J party and supporting Weaver, <lb/>
when any man who will stop and <lb/>
think seriously for a moment ought <lb/>
to able to see that tho <lb/>
of Weaver is only in the inter- <lb/>
est of Harrison and intended to <lb/>
defeat Cleveland. If one of thorn <lb/>
being so misled will honestly in- <lb/>
form himself ho will see that <lb/>
is no possible for Weaver <lb/>
to be even if every <lb/>
Weaver elector who is in the <lb/>
should be elected it would not be <lb/>
enough electoral votes to make <lb/>
him President. What then does a <lb/>
vote for Weaver mean It means <lb/>
a vote in the interest of Harrison, <lb/>
and nothing less than that. White <lb/>
men, you who have said you are <lb/>
going to vote for Weaver, do you <lb/>
want to see Benjamin Harrison <lb/>
President of these United States <lb/>
for four years I Do you <lb/>
want to see the infamous Force <lb/>
bill thrust upon our Southland <lb/>
and such a reign of terror upon us <lb/>
as has never been known before <lb/>
That is just what we will nave if <lb/>
Harrison is again elected <lb/>
dent. <lb/>
The Reflector knows the cry <lb/>
been raised by Republicans its <lb/>
hirelings, and has even been taken <lb/>
up by some misled Third party <lb/>
men. that this Force bill talk is <lb/>
just a scare-crow with which to <lb/>
drive all who have left it back into <lb/>
the Democratic party. Of course <lb/>
the Republicans are going to talk <lb/>
that Force bill is their <lb/>
last hope to perpetuate their party in <lb/>
power, and they are anxious to de- <lb/>
people with such talk. But you <lb/>
Third party men, you white men, <lb/>
are you ready to believe that the <lb/>
Force bill is all a scare <lb/>
it is all a humbug If you have <lb/>
formed such an opinion the <lb/>
wants you to read the fol- <lb/>
lowing, then give your family a <lb/>
few moments earnest thought, and <lb/>
sec if your mind does not change. <lb/>
The Motional Republican, a pa- <lb/>
per published in Washington City, <lb/>
of the Republican party <lb/>
and an earnest supporter of Mr. <lb/>
Harrison, says this, and we want <lb/>
you to read it carefully <lb/>
the Lodge national election law <lb/>
in force over the South and <lb/>
strongholds up North, we <lb/>
may confidently look for a different state <lb/>
of political affairs than now exists. New- <lb/>
York city will then return several more <lb/>
Republican Congressmen than at present <lb/>
while more than representative- <lb/>
from the South will reader the <lb/>
can control of the future <lb/>
safe and secure. <lb/>
taxes should be laid upon the <lb/>
property of the whites to develop and <lb/>
extend the public of those <lb/>
States. Separate schools for the two <lb/>
races should be abolished and the plan of <lb/>
bringing the youth of both colors into <lb/>
close and equal relation in schools and <lb/>
given a fair trial, as one of the <lb/>
Oft potent elements to break down the <lb/>
detestable of the South. The <lb/>
State laws against the inter-marriage of <lb/>
the should be repealed, and any <lb/>
discrimination against the blacks in the <lb/>
matter of learning trades or obtaining <lb/>
employment should be a criminal offense <lb/>
while the colored nun's rights to hold <lb/>
office should be sacredly protected <lb/>
recognized. A few years of this policy <lb/>
will solve the race problem <lb/>
Does not this look like there is <lb/>
something in tho Force bill talk, <lb/>
ard that it is not all a crow <lb/>
It is something that stares every <lb/>
white man of the South squarely <lb/>
in the face, and will become a re- <lb/>
just so sure as Benjamin <lb/>
Harrison is elected. The above <lb/>
extract from the National <lb/>
an shows the spirit of the party it <lb/>
represents. It that the Re- <lb/>
publican party will never be <lb/>
until the South has been <lb/>
until the has been <lb/>
made the equal of the white man ; <lb/>
until our white girls marry <lb/>
men and our white men many <lb/>
women until the white <lb/>
are for the <lb/>
maintenance of mixed schools and <lb/>
our white children are forced to <lb/>
occupy seats beside child- <lb/>
until white society in the <lb/>
South is compelled by law to merge <lb/>
with black society ; in short until <lb/>
our white race are transformed in- <lb/>
to a race of We repeat, <lb/>
that a largo following of the Re- <lb/>
publican party entertain such a <lb/>
spirit toward the people of the <lb/>
South and are laboring assiduous- <lb/>
to fasten upon us just such a <lb/>
condition. <lb/>
And strange to there are <lb/>
Third party people lending their <lb/>
influence to a movement by <lb/>
trying to defeat the Democratic <lb/>
party, tho only party that offers <lb/>
any safety to the people of the <lb/>
South- It was only a few weeks <lb/>

these things tell him to beware <lb/>
how he votes for Weaver and by <lb/>
so doing help to elect Harrison- <lb/>
Any man who votes a Third party <lb/>
ticket is just so far lending his in- <lb/>
to the Republican party <lb/>
the Force bill. <lb/>
REPUBLICAN <lb/>
Few people who were here last <lb/>
Saturday will soon forget the <lb/>
scenes transacted during tho day. <lb/>
There had been a call issued sign- <lb/>
d by thirty four Republicans for <lb/>
a mass meeting of the county for <lb/>
tho purpose of nominating a <lb/>
ticket. Early in the morning <lb/>
tho clans wore gathering from <lb/>
portions of the county and <lb/>
were generally met by one or two <lb/>
bosses and a few hired lieutenants <lb/>
to be sounded as to whether they <lb/>
proposed to stand by the sale of <lb/>
their white bosses and thereby <lb/>
low them to deliver the property <lb/>
according to contract or whether <lb/>
they were going to kick and there- <lb/>
by make the sale null and void, or <lb/>
at least prevent their receiving the <lb/>
stipulated amount of currency in <lb/>
in the transaction. Some <lb/>
of the bosses had purchased a lot <lb/>
of Harrison Reid flags and <lb/>
given them to a few drunken <lb/>
with to whoop <lb/>
and hollow is all we <lb/>
A drum had also been secured by <lb/>
said bosses and about twelve <lb/>
o'clock an attempt was made to <lb/>
lead the crowd off to a hall near <lb/>
the river where they could <lb/>
be handled more easily. The <lb/>
drum headed in that direction, <lb/>
followed by the flag bearers and <lb/>
When they had gone <lb/>
about fifty or a yards it <lb/>
was found by actual count that <lb/>
there were only thirteen <lb/>
in the crowd and one 4-year-old- <lb/>
one- <lb/>
The <lb/>
aforesaid individual led the pro- <lb/>
cession and a gay crowd it was as <lb/>
all were to feel their <lb/>
importance. <lb/>
The bosses found this would <lb/>
never do as it would not break up <lb/>
the g, so they called a halt <lb/>
returned to Cherry Hull where the <lb/>
Republicans were holding a <lb/>
and went in to take possession <lb/>
of the meeting. This they did by <lb/>
doing all the speaking and hollow- <lb/>
and by being so boisterous <lb/>
that no business could be transact- <lb/>
ed. Those trying to nominate a <lb/>
ticket there had to to the <lb/>
Court House and lock themselves <lb/>
up in the Grand Jury room to get <lb/>
quiet enough to do their work. <lb/>
The Radical J party or- J party- <lb/>
then went up and <lb/>
took possession of the Court room <lb/>
for a grand love feast. The meet- <lb/>
was opened by a speech from <lb/>
the 4-year-old-Radical one-week- <lb/>
which for <lb/>
utter failure has never been <lb/>
passed on the American Continent. <lb/>
His most devoted admirers, <lb/>
ken felt relieved when he <lb/>
was through. <lb/>
The Chairman of the <lb/>
can Executive Committee then <lb/>
stated why the committee had de- <lb/>
not to nominate a county <lb/>
ticket but support the J party can- <lb/>
About these words were <lb/>
People's Party <lb/>
committee came to us and <lb/>
made tho proposition to us that if <lb/>
we would do this they would let <lb/>
alone our electoral ticket. We <lb/>
thought this was the best that <lb/>
could be done so we <lb/>
Think of the moaning of this you <lb/>
white men who are supporting the <lb/>
J party. Have you agreed to let <lb/>
Harrison and Reid alone if the <lb/>
Republicans would support your <lb/>
county ticket When this state- <lb/>
was made a Democrat setting <lb/>
just in the in the rear of one of the <lb/>
most respectable J party men we <lb/>
know touched him and asked him <lb/>
if that was his understanding of <lb/>
the trade. He replied emphatic- <lb/>
ally, sir, it is <lb/>
This speech was followed by one <lb/>
from Mr. Bernard which for ex- <lb/>
of expression, <lb/>
racy of statement falsity of reason- <lb/>
and was rare- <lb/>
equaled even in the days of car- <lb/>
pet bag and scalawag in the <lb/>
days of 1868 and 1869. He stated <lb/>
that the Peoples party in the <lb/>
State had agreed that if tho Re- <lb/>
publicans of tho east would sup- <lb/>
port their comity tickets and <lb/>
the two get control of the <lb/>
Legislature that they would vote <lb/>
with the Republicans of the west <lb/>
in doing away with the present <lb/>
system county government, re- <lb/>
pealing the present election <lb/>
Ac. Again we ask white men <lb/>
if this in true, Don't yon now see <lb/>
that yon are being duped and de- <lb/>
by the Republicans who <lb/>
love you only because they think <lb/>
they con use yon to benefit them- <lb/>
selves T Honestly, will yon longer <lb/>
allow this to be done Can yon <lb/>
longer aid men who stand op as <lb/>
Mr. did Saturday <lb/>
speak of rebel generals and majors <lb/>
and inflame the minds of the <lb/>
rant against yon and your inter- <lb/>
Do yon want Republican <lb/>
rule in North Carolina T If not <lb/>
break away your present in- <lb/>
and support tho Demo- <lb/>
party- The Republicans <lb/>
lost all hope both in tho <lb/>
State and in the Nation and are <lb/>
now by meeting with you <lb/>
to get possession of tho. <lb/>
so that they may enact <lb/>
legislation as will give them the <lb/>
State two years from now. <lb/>
But back again to Saturday's <lb/>
work. After this speech this-1; id <lb/>
or-J-third-l <lb/>
cal-meeting adjourned. <lb/>
they were making speeches the <lb/>
Republicans were nominating a <lb/>
ticket. About o'clock the last <lb/>
named met in the Court House to <lb/>
have some speaking. Tho 4-year- <lb/>
old Republican now christened- <lb/>
old- J-party-man together <lb/>
with some drunken had <lb/>
been deputized to stay up in the <lb/>
Court room to break up this last <lb/>
meeting. So the above named in <lb/>
took his seat in tho Judge's <lb/>
stand with the chairman of the <lb/>
meeting, his lieutenants taking <lb/>
their seats in tho bar. The fuss <lb/>
began when chairman <lb/>
attempted to put the motion on <lb/>
the nomination of Mr. Cox for <lb/>
Register of Deeds. The 4-year- <lb/>
old -now -christened one- <lb/>
week old-J-party-man rose to speak. <lb/>
The chairman informed him this <lb/>
was A Republican meeting and <lb/>
ordered thorn to sit down. The <lb/>
above named individual <lb/>
flirted Harrison and Reid flags in <lb/>
the chairman's face and <lb/>
mum reigned for awhile- <lb/>
Finally the chairman told the <lb/>
aforesaid individual if he was a <lb/>
public nuisance he could stay up <lb/>
there but if he was not to get <lb/>
down, whereupon tho year-old- <lb/>
radical w e e k <lb/>
old-J-party-man took his seat with <lb/>
the chairman thereby confessing <lb/>
the corn- <lb/>
Now the Reflector is wonder- <lb/>
if the white men of Pitt conn- <lb/>
are to take sides with <lb/>
such a crew and help them defeat <lb/>
the help them break <lb/>
down our county government sys- <lb/>
and help bring our <lb/>
county under the control of <lb/>
These are serious things <lb/>
to consider and every man who is <lb/>
going to cast a ballot on the 8th <lb/>
of November should think well <lb/>
before doing so. <lb/>
We have some other points from <lb/>
one of those Saturday speeches, <lb/>
but have not space to comment on <lb/>
all this week. <lb/>

Y, <lb/>
The trade has completed <lb/>
and the Republican candidate for <lb/>
Congress in withdraws <lb/>
in favor of the J party candidate. <lb/>
Cards from both of them were <lb/>
published last week in the <lb/>
organ of the District For <lb/>
sometime it been known that <lb/>
efforts were being made to buy the <lb/>
Harrison off, and it was rumored <lb/>
that the reason the matter hung <lb/>
fire so long was a difference of <lb/>
in the offer of <lb/>
being made the Republican <lb/>
nominee to while he <lb/>
held up to In some way <lb/>
the difference has been reconciled, <lb/>
the Republican nominee withdraws <lb/>
from the canvass, and on the <lb/>
strength of that withdrawal the <lb/>
party man accepts the <lb/>
tendered him by the executive <lb/>
committee. Every honest man in <lb/>
the District ought to speak out <lb/>
his disapproval of such a fusion <lb/>
and vote for our honored <lb/>

Mr. Arthur Kennedy, a young man <lb/>

it is said that Noble has <lb/>

publican district boss in several <lb/>
close and doubtful States. Do <lb/>
you know what it means It <lb/>
means that the reports received by <lb/>
the Republican managers from <lb/>
every congressional district the <lb/>
country have convinced them of <lb/>
the impossibility of getting a ma- <lb/>
of the nest House of <lb/>
and that they are going <lb/>
to up the tight for Congress- <lb/>
men in the close and doubtful <lb/>
States, and to sacrifice even those <lb/>
candidates who are running in <lb/>
Republican districts, if votes <lb/>
can be traded them so as <lb/>
to increase the vote for the Re- <lb/>
electoral ticket in those <lb/>
New York, New Jersey, <lb/>
Connecticut and Indiana are the <lb/>
States in which this trading is to <lb/>
be attempted. It is a bold scheme, <lb/>
but it is to be and <lb/>
nearly all of tho Republican can- <lb/>

become victims have been, between <lb/>
pressure and promises, made to <lb/>
therein; . a few are <lb/>
but they will probably <lb/>
be whipped in some way or other. <lb/>
There can be little doubt that <lb/>
the object of the Republicans in <lb/>
bringing the question of the con- <lb/>
of the new Michigan <lb/>
electoral law, providing for the <lb/>
election of Presidential electors <lb/>
by Congressional districts instead <lb/>
of electing all of them on one tick- <lb/>
et, before the U. S Supreme <lb/>
Court, is to obtain a political de- <lb/>
similar to the notorious <lb/>
to decision of 1877. The <lb/>
was argued before the court <lb/>
this week, and Republicans are <lb/>
boldly claiming that the law will <lb/>
be declared unconstitutional be- <lb/>
fore election; but it is hardly <lb/>
probable that a majority of the <lb/>
court will sanction the claim by <lb/>
voting for such a decision. The <lb/>
case as brought before the court <lb/>
is a private one, and contrary to <lb/>
all precedent, tho Attorney-General <lb/>
of the United States appeared as <lb/>
the leading counsel on the <lb/>
side; but he is hardly to <lb/>
blame for taking such an unusual <lb/>
course, as it is stated by those in a <lb/>
position to know, and generally <lb/>
believed that he was acting under <lb/>
the orders or the Republican boss- <lb/>
es. All the same it was an <lb/>
proper proceeding, although <lb/>
probably not illegal. This was re <lb/>
by the Attorney General <lb/>
himself, who took especial pains <lb/>
to it known that he appeared <lb/>
in the case private counsel and <lb/>
