At a recent conference of the <lb />
Executive Committee of the Dem- <lb />
party, which was attended <lb />
by many of the leading citizens <lb />
from different sections of the <lb />
State, and in which our present <lb />
political condition as a party, was <lb />
discussed in a spirit of forbear- <lb />
and conciliation, it was deem- <lb />
ed wise to issue an address to the <lb />
friends and adherents of the party <lb />
urging that the same spirit shall <lb />
enter into and control all our dis- <lb />
and actions preparatory <lb />
to and during the great struggle <lb />
of 1892. <lb />
At this conference the under- <lb />
signed were selected to prepare <lb />
and issue the address, and we <lb />
were especially enjoined to voice, <lb />
as nearly as possible, the spirit of <lb />
harmony and unity and loyalty to <lb />
the Democratic party which char- <lb />
the conference- <lb />
It must be apparent to any <lb />
thoughtful observer that there is a <lb />
general depression in agriculture <lb />
and a consequent feeling of <lb />
and unrest among those <lb />
engaged in that pursuit, though <lb />
the tillers of the soil are not the <lb />
only ones who are suffering from <lb />
this depression. This <lb />
want of prosperity among the far- <lb />
has seriously affected the <lb />
great mass of those engaged in <lb />
other vocations; in fact, but few <lb />
have escaped its baleful influences. <lb />
Then we are common sufferers <lb />
from a common cause- If this be <lb />
true, can there be any reason why <lb />
we should not work together to re- <lb />
move this cause and drive from <lb />
power its author I <lb />
The real author of the grievances <lb />
of which the people so justly com- <lb />
plain, is the Republican party, <lb />
which has administered the Fed- <lb />
government for the benefit of <lb />
favored classes and against the in- <lb />
of the toiling masses of the <lb />
American people. And we appeal <lb />
to our fellow citizens of all <lb />
to stand shoulder to shoulder <lb />
in the fight we must make against <lb />
this great adversary. <lb />
In the dark days following 1868 <lb />
and 1869, we stood together <lb />
against this same enemy in State <lb />
affairs, and we conquered. The <lb />
lessons then learned should not be <lb />
forgotten and we expect them to <lb />
hear in 1893, if we do not <lb />
AMT<lb />
AMT<lb />
mistake the temper and patriotism <lb />
of our people. <lb />
Let us not be guilty of the folly <lb />
of wasting our strength and <lb />
our forces in uncompromising, <lb />
acrimonious contentions among <lb />
ourselves as to the best means of <lb />
accomplishing a deliverance from <lb />
the evils which now environ us <lb />
and the burdens which now weigh <lb />
us down. <lb />
Among those evils and burdens <lb />
we will mention two about which <lb />
it seems to us we can all agree <lb />
and from winch we cannot hope to <lb />
be delivered till we overthrow the <lb />
party which created them. The <lb />
first of these is the <lb />
supply of money in the country <lb />
and the want of a bettor system <lb />
for its distribution, so that it mat <lb />
be procurable more easily and at <lb />
reasonable rates of interest; and <lb />
the other is the unjust and bur- <lb />
system of tariff taxation. <lb />
The former we regard as the chief <lb />
cause of the stagnation in <lb />
and the latter a powerful ally <lb />
in robbing agriculture and labor <lb />
of just rewards. That the supply <lb />
of currency is wholly insufficient <lb />
for the business transactions of <lb />
the country needs no argument to <lb />
prove. It is the experience not <lb />
only of the farmers but of most <lb />
men engaged in other business <lb />
and professional pursuits. <lb />
Now add to this inadequacy of <lb />
money supply and its improper <lb />
distribution, the unequal and <lb />
necessary burdens of tariff <lb />
whose cruel exactions <lb />
now realized the wildest dreams of <lb />
the most exorbitant <lb />
and we find a sufficient cause for <lb />
the unrest and disquiet existing <lb />
among our people. We affirm <lb />
that these evils are the direct off- <lb />
spring of Republican legislation. <lb />
Other causes of greater or less <lb />
weight may be assigned for the <lb />
present depression in agriculture <lb />
and other pursuits ; but they too, <lb />
so far as their origin can be traced <lb />
to legislation, must be charged to <lb />
the same Republican party; for <lb />
there has not been an hour in the <lb />
last twenty-five years when that <lb />
party did not control one branch <lb />
or other of Congress or the Ex- <lb />
and thus hold an effectual <lb />
check at all times upon the power <lb />
of the Democratic party to give <lb />
the people relief and redress by <lb />
repealing vicious legislation and <lb />
enacting remedial measures; so <lb />
that it cannot in fairness be said <lb />
that the Democratic party is re- <lb />
for failing to do these <lb />
things. In our opinion the short <lb />
est practicable road to the redress <lb />
of the wrongs and evils which op- <lb />
pi the country is through the <lb />
complete triumph of the Demo- <lb />
party, which is the party of <lb />
the people, whose fundamental <lb />
principles are in harmony with <lb />
their interests. <lb />
This committee, composed of <lb />
ten Democrats, of whom lie- <lb />
long to the Alliance and live- of <lb />
whom do not, but all speaking the <lb />
sentiments of the Democratic <lb />
party, sympathize with and unite <lb />
in the strenuous demands of the <lb />
people, uttered through the Farm- <lb />
Alliance, the various industrial <lb />
organizations, and otherwise, for <lb />
such thorough reform in the <lb />
system as will give to our <lb />
a sound currency in sufficient <lb />
and properly <lb />
and relief from the burdens of <lb />
tariff taxation. <lb />
As to the particular methods <lb />
and plans by which these objects, <lb />
desired by all true Democrats, are <lb />
to be accomplished, it is <lb />
that there should be honest <lb />
differences of opinion- One man <lb />
may assign one cause for the gen- <lb />
stagnation in business and <lb />
suggest a remedy which he <lb />
believes to lie a sovereign remedy. <lb />
Another man, equally intelligent <lb />
and honest, may differ with him as <lb />
to the real cause or the proper <lb />
remedy to be applied. It is <lb />
unjust to charge either of <lb />
these men with dishonesty or en- <lb />
of reform where reform la <lb />
needed. Our friends must learn <lb />
to discuss all questions concerning <lb />
these matters in a spirit of fair- <lb />
good will, and mutual <lb />
and esteem, within the party <lb />
lines, and when the time for action <lb />
comes unite upon such men and <lb />
such measures as seem moat likely <lb />
to lead us to victory and to secure <lb />
for the people such wise and need- <lb />
reform in our national <lb />
as shall have respect to the <lb />
good of the whole people and <lb />
shall not be for the benefit and <lb />
enrichment of the few. If we will <lb />
remain united and determined, we <lb />

STORM. <lb />
Hamilton. N. C, Dec. L <lb />
Editor terrible <lb />
storm passed through Edgecombe <lb />
and Martin counties on Monday. <lb />
Dec. 7th- It blew down Jones <lb />
church in Edgecombe, and <lb />
demolished other buildings in <lb />
that section. T. C Howard being <lb />
in that section was seriously <lb />
injured by falling timbers from a <lb />
shed under which he was standing. <lb />
At Goose Nest it tore down Hitch s <lb />
immense lumber sheds and in- <lb />
a locomotive standing on <lb />
the track. At J. B- and <lb />
Dr. farms fodder stacks, <lb />
pea-nut stacks, chimney's, were <lb />
swept away. In the woods trees <lb />
were twisted off and an opening <lb />
made like the right of way for a <lb />
railroad. The track of the storm <lb />
was not more than a quarter of a <lb />
mile wide. Several thousands of <lb />
dollars can not replace the losses. <lb />
The people of Hamilton were <lb />

SHOES <lb />
For these we are headquarters and defy competition. In <lb />
to a full of regular goods we have about pairs <lb />
which we bought in job lots at about one half their value. They <lb />
consist of Misses, Boys, Gentlemen and Ladies Shoes. <lb />
We will sell them at the same discount at which we bought them, <lb />
which is to say for about per cent, on the dollar. We <lb />
tee these goods first-class in every respect, and are only sold <lb />
cheap because a large firm north failed and their stock was thrown <lb />
on the market and had to be sold for what it would bring. Our <lb />
buyer was on the ground and bought what we nave. <lb />
All of our lines are complete and having only one price forces us <lb />

Thanking people of this and surrounding counties for past favors we hope <lb />
merit n of the <lb />
J, <lb />
may dislodge the Republican <lb />
party from power and in time <lb />
work out these needful reforms, <lb />
but if we divide up among <lb />
selves it can but result in <lb />
party in power and thus <lb />
perpetuating the evils of which we <lb />
now- justly complain. <lb />
The unity of the Democratic <lb />
party in the whole country is es- <lb />
also to prevent the enact- <lb />
of the Force Bill which <lb />
would forever destroy the freedom <lb />
of elections, perpetuate the rule of <lb />
the Republican party and its vi- <lb />
measures, which have so op- <lb />
pressed the people, and ruin <lb />
especially the South- We have <lb />
to apprehend that this dangerous <lb />
bill, which we all had hoped was <lb />
dead, will be revived again and <lb />
enacted into a law if, by our <lb />
the Republican party should <lb />
obtain once more full control of <lb />
the law-making power of the Fed- <lb />
Government. Then, too. we <lb />
have so much at stake at home in <lb />
North Carolina. <lb />
From 1871 to our State <lb />
Legislation has been wise and for <lb />
the best interests of our people, <lb />
From 1876 to 1891 these wise laws <lb />
have been wisely administered <lb />
and during nil that period we <lb />
have had a clean, pure, <lb />
administration of our home <lb />
and we do not hesitate to <lb />
say that the State government <lb />
given its by the Democratic party <lb />
is as near perfect as human <lb />
can well made. It would <lb />
be madness in us to divide up <lb />
among ourselves and by this <lb />
division turn our State govern- <lb />
over to the party of and <lb />
we think to sow the <lb />
seeds of discord and promote <lb />
division ill the ranks of the Demo- <lb />
of North Carolina, from <lb />
whatever motive, would imperil <lb />
the best interests of the State and <lb />
should be avoided by all true men. <lb />
In view of these facts, and of the <lb />
far-reaching consequences of the <lb />
great struggle of We urge <lb />
upon Democrats in every section <lb />
of the State and of every shade of <lb />
opinion to lay aside nil feelings of <lb />
prejudice and distrust, to study <lb />
and discuss every proposition <lb />
made for reform with an earnest <lb />
desire to secure the best. <lb />
Speaking by authority of the <lb />
State Executive Committee, we <lb />
urge all our people to refrain <lb />
fault-finding; we condemn abuse <lb />
and vituperation in whatever <lb />
exhort all to practice a prudent <lb />
and rational forbearance, and com- <lb />
mend to you the supreme virtue of <lb />
charity. Let us concede to all, as <lb />
we claim for all, the inalienable <lb />
right of opinion. <lb />
The monopolists and their <lb />
the Republican party, <lb />
will not loosen the fetters with <lb />
which they have bound us without <lb />
a desperate struggle, and we can- <lb />
not please them bitter than to <lb />
was our energies in fighting each <lb />
other. Let us so demean ourselves <lb />
now that we nay be able to <lb />
sent an unbroken front to our com- <lb />
enemy when the time comes <lb />
for action. Patriotism, country <lb />
homo appeal to us for <lb />
and promise the rich reward of <lb />
unity. <lb />
