from the present outlook cotton <lb />
will bring a very low price this <lb />
fall. It is not recorded that the <lb />
was ever lower but once, <lb />
and that was years ago. The con <lb />
sequence of this is the cotton crop <lb />
will be very much decreased next <lb />
year. Many farmers declare their <lb />
intention of abandoning its <lb />

The press dispatches last week <lb />
that Willie Davis, the <lb />
young North Carolinian who was <lb />
under sentence of death at Fort <lb />
Worth, Tex., has died in his cell <lb />
in the jail there. He was to have <lb />
been hanged on the 10th of this <lb />
month. It is believed now by <lb />
many that he had been supplied <lb />
with some kind of acid and took <lb />
life. He is accredited <lb />
repeatedly that he <lb />
Mid not die upon the gallows. <lb />
Young Davis in the same one over <lb />
so much interest was <lb />
in this State last fall, when <lb />
it was stated that he was under <lb />
unjust sentence of and an <lb />
appeal for funds was made that <lb />
his case might be taken to a high- <lb />
court. It will remembered <lb />
that while the appeal going <lb />
around Greenville made a liberal <lb />
response. The effect failed to get <lb />
him another trial decision <lb />
of the lower court was sustained. <lb />
The State Alliance is <lb />
in session this week at Morehead. <lb />
The meeting is looked to with con- <lb />
interest, as the outsider <lb />
cannot know in advance whether <lb />
the extremist or the more <lb />
of the order are to control <lb />
its movements. There are many <lb />
excellent men in the Alliance <lb />
some of the best in all our land <lb />
who have only the welfare of their <lb />
fellow-laborers and the general <lb />
good of their country at heart. On <lb />
the other hand there are men who <lb />
have admission into the <lb />
order who would pollute the <lb />
poses which it was organized, <lb />
whose only interest is and <lb />
who hope by stirring up <lb />
to get themselves into <lb />
power and advance their <lb />
aims. We hope the better <lb />
will prevail and shape the <lb />
future policy of the order. If so <lb />
much good can be accomplished. <lb />
If the extremists rule there is <lb />
to fear.<lb />
poses to manage the Republican <lb />
campaign in Pennsylvania this <lb />
year and that in his efforts for <lb />
vindication ho may even become <lb />
chairman of the Republican state <lb />
committee. Nothing could be <lb />
better for the Democrats than this <lb />
the only fear is <lb />
that it may not be carried out. <lb />
The fact has been recognized by <lb />
the Democrats ever since tho car- <lb />
of Republican financial <lb />
crookedness, begun by <lb />
and not ended by Treasurer Bard <lb />
though he is tho last one <lb />
that was that the Demo- <lb />
party has ft good fighting <lb />
chance to carry Pennsylvania this <lb />
year, and that chance will certain- <lb />
greatly improved if the man <lb />
who was forced out of the chair- <lb />
of the Republican Nat- <lb />
Committee in to <lb />
the openly expressed sentiments <lb />
of prominent newspapers and men <lb />
in his own party shall attempt to <lb />
openly manage the Republican <lb />
campaign. <lb />
Tho meeting of tho <lb />
committee of the National <lb />
of Democratic clubs, <lb />
which is to be held next in <lb />
New York city, was called to hear <lb />
reports as to the progress made in <lb />
new clubs and to <lb />
discuss ways and means of <lb />
creasing the rapid progress <lb />
ready made. Secretary Gardner <lb />
our meeting the <lb />
President of our Association, Hon. <lb />
F. Black, of <lb />
will start upon a tour of <lb />
Ohio, Indiana, Iowa and Illinois, <lb />
his purpose being to strengthen <lb />
our organization in those States. <lb />
Our meeting will have no bearing <lb />
on the interests of any <lb />
candidate, and under our <lb />
present constitution we are ob- <lb />
to confine ourselves to the <lb />
tariff as the leading <lb />
Mr. thinks to fool the <lb />
Democrats by giving it out in <lb />
newspaper interviews that the <lb />
Republican national committee <lb />
will take no part in the State cam- <lb />
this year, but he makes <lb />
a mistake as big as a house. The <lb />
Democrats know that Mr. Clark- <lb />
son's committee is already taking <lb />
an extensive part in the <lb />
campaign in Ohio and Iowa, in <lb />
addition to its laborious duties in <lb />
pushing the Blaine and Alger <lb />
Presidential ticket through the <lb />
National League of Republican <lb />
clubs, of which Mr. is <lb />
president, and also that it is en- <lb />
gaged in hustling among the pro- <lb />
manufacturers for <lb />
to the big corruption fund <lb />
which it has been decided to raise. <lb />
Payments made on account of <lb />

Mr. drove into town from <lb />

There was n rush in the <lb />
that the vehicle went and <lb />
soon after its at the Court <lb />
House a large crowd gathered around. <lb />
The colored people were largely in <lb />
the majority and were <lb />
to gel a peep at George. The <lb />
prisoner was quickly removed to the <lb />
jail and placed in an upper cell, <lb />
which excluded him from view, and <lb />
the crowd slowly dispersed. <lb />
HE IS THE <lb />
A reporter was on <lb />
band and was admitted into the jail. <lb />
When we first saw Dudley he was <lb />
standing in the upper corridor wait- <lb />
for the door the cell to De <lb />
locked. Being brought back home <lb />
where his crime was committed and <lb />
passing before the gaze of so many <lb />
people that knew him, had made him <lb />
somewhat nervous and restless. He <lb />
was securely handcuffed and ex-. <lb />
pressed some anxiety about the <lb />
manacles being removed. The key <lb />
to them had been accidentally left <lb />
Wilson and few minutes time were <lb />
consumed in devising means for <lb />
opening the. locks. The prisoner <lb />
had shaved off his <lb />
we thought he looked a trifle darker <lb />
than usual which may have been <lb />
caused from sun burn. However, a <lb />
glimpse was sufficient to show that <lb />
he was beyond doubt George Dudley. <lb />
HOW HE WAS CAPTURED. <lb />
Officer Mayo was interviewed and <lb />
gave the particulars of the capture. <lb />
He said lie was connected with the <lb />
Wilson police force and with his as- <lb />
Mr. had been on <lb />
the lookout for Dudley. A <lb />
weeks ago they had information that <lb />
Dudley around Wilson but <lb />
could not him. He had an <lb />
uncle living close Wilson and find- <lb />
out this the officer went to his <lb />
house but Dudley had fled the <lb />
day. Subsequently the officer <lb />
were told that Dudley had been in <lb />
the three weeks, that at <lb />
limes he had been disguised as I <lb />
woman doing conking and oilier work <lb />
about his uncle's. The officers kepi <lb />
on the alert and gained the <lb />
of a young colored man who <lb />
knew something of Dudley's <lb />
Through him it was learned <lb />
that Dudley wrote to a color- <lb />

stall and a third party who had <lb />
admitted into the secret closed the <lb />
door, shutting up officer and prisoner <lb />
together. Mr. Mayo is a powerful, <lb />
fearless man, and far than <lb />
takes to relate Hie circumstance he <lb />
had Dudley handcuffed. Dudley <lb />
seeing that he was trapped offered no <lb />
resistance to the officer. At first he <lb />
denied that he was George Dudley, <lb />
but when Mr. Mayo produced and <lb />
read the letter he bad written the <lb />

to break a piece off of a potato and <lb />
throw it a corner which he knows is <lb />
a den of rats, thus endeavoring to en- <lb />
them from their lair to become his <lb />
playmates. <lb />
When within his reach he fondles <lb />
them In bis own burly manner, which <lb />
is none too and not knowing <lb />
the frailty of the little beast he actually <lb />
kills them with kindness. Finding the <lb />
diminutive rodent lifeless It is <lb />

straw which litters his cage. When the <lb />

Men and Their <lb />
Men are often more fussy and par- <lb />
about insignificant tilings than <lb />
women. There are thousands of men <lb />
in New York who go miles out of their <lb />
way to get shaved. I know men who <lb />
come down on the elevated, and who <lb />
get off at some intermediate point to <lb />
patronize a favorite barber. They have <lb />
done so for years. The array of <lb />
cups in any shop illustrates the <lb />
strength of tills shaving habit When <lb />

hour In one of these shops and fumble <lb />

who doesn't learn to shave himself while <lb />
his beard Is young is laying up a life of <lb />
slavery to public barbers. In the <lb />
course of an ordinarily long lifetime he <lb />
will spend about three years sitting <lb />

Man Makes a Desperate <lb />
In one the wildest portions of <lb />
Wisconsin when It was a wild frontier <lb />
state bad settled the noted pioneer <lb />
Bank a man whose wonderful <lb />
endurance of limb la In a measure <lb />
by this sketch. <lb />
One dark and rainy night of the year <lb />
the brave pioneer, whose reckless <lb />
nature had won for him the title of <lb />
and by which he was <lb />
known far and wide, found himself <lb />
some fifteen miles from home and with <lb />
the river, swollen and <lb />
lent from the recent rain, between him- <lb />
self and his destination. <lb />
Wolves howled upon every hand, but <lb />
he paid no particular attention to <lb />
them, pressing steadily on In the <lb />
drenching <lb />
At length, however, ho noticed that <lb />
tho grim scavengers of the forest were <lb />
beginning to congregate In large <lb />
into the trail behind <lb />
drawing uncomfortably howling <lb />
and snarling at one another as they <lb />
dune <lb />
This served to give him a slight <lb />
easiness of mind as he urged his horse <lb />
forward. <lb />
Steadily the horde of wet, shaggy <lb />
forms increased in number until it <lb />
seemed a thousand of them were <lb />
crowding along upon the pioneer's <lb />
track, making night hideous with <lb />
their babel of snarling voices. <lb />
How swiftly in pursuit came that <lb />
writhing mass of now thoroughly en- <lb />
raged brutes, and though tho pioneer <lb />
was swift of foot ho had to <lb />
put forth every effort to keep of <lb />
their way, n ml there in the darkness of <lb />
the Wisconsin wilderness ensued a <lb />
race for and death. <lb />
The ground was fairly smooth, and <lb />
this aided man some- <lb />
ho was compelled to use <lb />
spurs mercilessly to escape those clash- <lb />
jaws. <lb />
Like the very wind ho sped along, <lb />
his only hope lying in reaching the river <lb />
in advance of his fierce pursuers, for <lb />
once across the turbulent current he <lb />
would be safe <lb />
But fully five miles lay between him <lb />
and the river, and it indeed be <lb />
a miracle to reach It; but wholly <lb />
daunted the reckless fellow sped on, <lb />
his teeth closed firmly and his eyes <lb />
gleaming with all the Are of Ids wild, <lb />
excitable nature. <lb />
Mile after mile was cast behind, and <lb />
daylight was beginning to steal over <lb />
the land the swift and swollen <lb />
hove in sight. <lb />
T o ground sloped toward It, and <lb />
down this descent flew pursued and <lb />
pursuers, with scarce feet separating <lb />
them. <lb />
For over five miles had that desperate <lb />
continued, and now, exhausted as <lb />
he was by his superhuman speed, <lb />
performed a feat that was simply <lb />
marvelous and almost unparalleled. <lb />
Tho banks of the stream were high <lb />
and projecting, and scarcely eighty rods <lb />
below tho river fell over a mass of jag <lb />
rocks that no one could hope to <lb />
pass over olive, while it would be <lb />
possible to effect a when once <lb />
in the turbulent current. <lb />
With that horde of raging beasts <lb />
close behind him, and the dangerous <lb />
river below, and fully twenty-five feet <lb />
between Its banks, the brave pioneer <lb />
was truly In a most <lb />
But, scarcely realizing bis <lb />
In his and frenzy, he <lb />
galloped down slope, and, putting <lb />
every effort of his homo's fast failing <lb />
strength In one mighty leap, landed <lb />
squarely upon the other bank of the <lb />
river. <lb />
The wolves were unable to check <lb />
their headlong and many of <lb />
their number went over the bank and <lb />
swept away, the exhausted <lb />
steed sank trembling upon tho ground. <lb />
Three hours later, however, he <lb />
reached his cabin in safety, and In a <lb />
