Many farm families in the first half of the 20th century cooked all of their meals from scratch. All of this cooking meant many hours in the kitchen over a hot stove and in an even hotter oven. Potholders were often given out by tobacco warehouses to farm families, not only because they were a much used item, but because it was another way to get the name of a warehouse out into public view.
