				<head>Author Biography</head>
				<p>William Henry Trescot was a practicing attorney in Charleston, South Carolina. Before the Civil War he served as Assistant Secretary of State of the United States and later became an intermediary between South Carolina and President Buchanan after the bombardment of Fort Sumter. He wrote a pamphlet entitled <title>Position and Course of the South</title> (1850). After the war he returned to his career as a lawyer and became a diplomat.</p>
