				<p>William Ruffin Cox (11 March 1832-26 December 1919) was born in Scotland Neck in Halifax County, North Carolina, the son of Thomas Cox and Olivia Norfleet Cox. He studied at the Vine Hill Academy in Scotland Neck and later entered Franklin College in Nashville, Tennessee. After Franklin College, he studied law at Lebanon College and practice law for five years in Nashville. He was a Confederate general during the Civil War, and emerged as a popular North Carolina military hero.  He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1881 to 1887.
