				<p>This 1878 pamphlet details the lives of many citizens of the New Bern area categorized by trades and professions such as merchants, lawyers, physicians, schools and teachers, town and county officers, banks, jewelers, and carriage and sail makers that dominated New Bern before the Civil War. The appendix contains letters from Judge Gaston, Judge Donnell, Judge Manly, and ex-governor Swain.

				<head>Author Biograph</head>
				<p>Stephen Miller Franks was born in North Carolina, November 22, 1805. His family moved to Georgia, where he received his education and was admitted to the bar at the age of twenty-two. He became the Solicitor-General of the Southern Circuit, and when his term expired he moved to Alabama to continue practicing law. In 1840, due to health problems, Franks gave up his law practice and became the editor of the <title>Monitor</title>. After seven years he became the editorial manager of <title>Bebow's Review</title> and the <title>Daily Commercial Times</title>. He later moved back to Oglethorpe, Georgia. He is the author of several titles including, <title>Bench and Bar of Georgia, Wilkins Wylder: or, The Successful Man</title>, and a <title>Memoir of the late General David Blackshear</title>.</p>
