				<head>Author Biography</head>
				<p>Hersey Everett Spence (12 June 1882-30 Sept. 1973) was born in Camden County, the son of Joseph Newton and Lucy Indiana Howell Spence. Active in the Methodist church,  Spence held the position of professor of religious education at Duke University from 1925 until his retirement in 1952.  In addition to his teaching duties, Spence wrote numerous books on religious and historical topics.</p>
