                <p>Washington gives details of Kinston, the only town at the time, and all the land and waterways that surround the town.  He wrote about the high banks along the Neuse River and his concern for the health of the river.  He also wrote a lengthy plea about internal improvements needed in North Carolina.

                <p>John Washington was a commissioner of Kinston in 1806 and 1809 and postmaster in 1823.</p>
