As the name of this newspaper would indicate, the publisher, Albert W. Chappell, and the editor, A. A. Putnam, were advocates of a "a more perfect Union" of the states. In addition to local news and advertisements, these first two issues of The Old Flag contain news of the surrender of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston and the capture of Jefferson Davis and other Confederate officials.
