In 1891 there were several fires in the Chicod Township that destroyed property of several local residents, including Mr. J.J. Laughinghouse, J. Bryan Grimes, and Mrs. Jos. H. Saunders. Three broadsides describe awards that were to be given for the arrest and conviction of the arsonists by the victims of the fires, the Governor of North Carolina, and the Board of Commissioners of Pitt County.
