In this paper read before the Rhode Island Soldiers and Sailors Historical Society, Butts tells about the rescue attempt after the Rhode Island was called in to rescue the crew of the Ironclad Monitor, which sank in a gale off the coast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, on December 31, 1862. Just over half of the crew was rescued.
