				<p>This is an address on the military and civil services of General Matt W. Ransom. This address was given in the North Carolina Senate Chambers in Raleigh for the Ladies' Memorial Association and Citizens on May 10, 1906. This address outlines the accomplishments he made during his lifetime. Ransom (8 October 1826- 8 October 1904) was born in Warren County. He was a lieutenant colonel for North Carolina in the Confederate Army. He later was elected as attorney general of North Carolina and U.S. Senator. At the end of his terms in Congress, President Grover Cleveland appointed Ransom as minister to Mexico.

			<head>Author Biography</head>
			<p>William Hyslop Sumner Burgwyn (22 Jan.1886-24 Jan. 1977) was a lawyer, judge, and renowned orator. He was born in Jackson, Northampton County, the son of George Pollock and Emma Ridley Burgwyn. He had a distinguished career in both public service and private enterprise, serving several terms in the North Carolina General Assembly during the 1920s and more than sixteen years as a Superior Court judge as well as holding the presidency of Farmers Bank of Woodlawn. Burgwyn is perhaps best known for his oratory. </p>
